Abstract:The 18-electron dithiolato carborane complexes Cp*Rh(L)S2C2(B10H10) (L=4-(chloromethyl)pyridj.ne (2a), 4-(methyltbiomelbyl)pyridine (2b)) were synthesized from the 16e half-sandwich rhodium complexe [Cp*:Rh[S2C2 (B10H10)] and pyridine derivatives (L) at room temperature. The complexes have been fully characterized by their IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis. The molecular structures of 2a and 2b were established through X-ray crystal structure analysis.

Abstract:The synthesis of half-sandwich transition metal complexes containing both 1,2-dichalcogenolato-1,2-dicarba-closo-docecaborane (Cab(E,E)) [Cab(E,E)=E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10)); E = S, Se] and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands is described. Addition of mono-NHC ligand to the 16e half-sandwich dichalcogenolato carborane complexes [Cp*Rh(Cab(E,E))], [Cp*Ir(Cab(S,S))], [(p-cymene)Ru(Cab(S,S))] (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) gives corresponding mononuclear 18e dithiolate complexes of the type [LM(Cab(E,E))(NHC)]: [Cp*M(Cab(S,S))(1-ethenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene)] (M = Ir (2), Rh (3)), [Cp*Rh(Cab(E,E))(3-methyl-1-picolyimidazolin-2-ylidene)] [E = S (6), Se (7)], [(p-cymene)Ru(Cab(S,S))(NHC)] [NHC = 1-ethenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene (4), 3-methyl-1-picolyimidazolin-2-ylidene (8)], whereas bis-NHC give centrosymmetric binuclear complexes [{Cp*M(Cab(S,S))}(2)(1,1'-dimethyl-3,3'-methylene(imidazolin-2-ylidene))] [M = Rh (10), Ir (11)]. The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, X-ray structure analyses were performed on complexes 2-4, 6, 8, 10 and 11.

Abstract:The synthesis of trinuclear half-sandwich iridium and rhodium complexes containing both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane ligands is described. Complexes {Cp* M[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))]}(3)(L) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; L = tris(2-(3-methylimidazol-2- ylidene)ethyl) amine; M = Ir (7), Rh (8); E = S (a), Se (b)) were obtained from the reactions of Cp*M[E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10))] (M = Ir (3), Rh (4)) with a silver-NHC precursor or from the reactions of [Cp*MCl(2)](3)(L) (M = Ir (5), Rh (6)) with Li(2)E(2)C(2)(B(10)H(10)) (E = S, Se). The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis. In addition, X-ray structure analyses were performed on complexes 7a and 8b.

Abstract:Reactions of bi-NHC ligands with the 16-electron half-sandwich Ir and Rh dichalcogenolato carborane complexes Cp*M[E2C2(B10H10)] (M = Ir, Rh; E = S, Se) or 16-electron half-sandwich Ir and Rh carbonate complexes Cp*M(mu-O)(2)CO (M = Ir, Rh) give corresponding 18-electron binuclear complexes of the type [[{Cp*M(E2C2(B10H10))}(2)L] (L = 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene); M Ir, E = S (4a), Se (4b); M = Rh, E = S (5a), Se (5b)) and [Cp*M(mu-O)(2)CO](2)L (M = Ir (8), Rh (9)). Complexes 4-9 can also be obtained directly from the reactions Of [CP*MCl2](2)L (M = Ir (2), Rh (3)) with Li-2[E2C2(B10H10)] or Na2CO3 in high yields. The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. In addition, the molecular structures of 4b, 5a, and 8 have been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Two binuclear complexes [Cp∗M(Cl)CarbS]2 (Cp∗ = η5-C5Me5, M = Rh (1a), CarbS = SC2(H)B10H10, Ir (1b)) were synthesized by the reaction of LiCarbS with the dimeric metal complexes [Cp∗MCl(μ-Cl)]2 (M = Rh, Ir). Four mononuclear complexes Cp∗M(Cl)(L)CarbS (L = BunPPh2, M = Rh (2a), Ir (2b); L = PPh3, M = Rh (4a), Ir (4b)) were synthesized by reactions of 1a or 1b with L (L = BunPPh2 (2); PPh3 (4)) in moderate yields, respectively. Complexes 3a, 3b, 5a, 5b were obtained by treatment of 2a, 2b, 4a, 4b with AgPF6 in high yields, respectively. All of these compounds were fully characterized by IR, NMR, and elemental analysis, and the crystal structures of 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 4a, 4b were also confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Their structures showed 3a, 3b and 5a, 5b could be expected as good candidates for heterolytic dihydrogen activation. Preliminary experiments on the dihydrogen activation driven by these half-sandwich Rh, Ir complexes were done under mild conditions.

Abstract:1, 1 '-( 3- Oxapentamethylene) dicyclopentadiene [ O( CH2CH2C5H5)(2)] ( 1), containing a flexible chain- bridged group, was synthesized by the reaction of sodium cyclopentadienide with bis( 2- chloroethyl) ether through a slightly modified literature procedure. Furthermore, the binuclear cobalt( III) complex O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Co(CO) I-2] (2) ( 3) and insoluble polynuclear rhodium( III) complex {O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) RhI2](2)} (n) ( 8) were obtained from reactions of 1 with the corresponding metal fragments and they react easily with PPh3 to give binuclear metal complexes, O[CH2CH2(eta(C5H4)-C-5) Co(PPh3)I-2](2) ( 4) and O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Rh( PPh3)I-2] (2) ( 9), respectively. Complexes 3, 4 and 9 react with bidentate dilithium dichalcogenolato ortho- carborane to give eight binuclear half- sandwich ortho-carboranedichalcogenolato cobalt( III) and rhodium( III) complexes O[CH2CH2(eta(C5H4)-C-5) Co(PPh3)(E2C2B10H10)](2) ( E = S ( 5a) and Se ( 5b)), O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4)](2)Co-2(E2C2B10H10) ( E = S ( 6a) and Se ( 6b)), O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Co(E2C2B10H10)](2) ( E = S ( 7a) and Se ( 7b)) and O[CH2CH2(eta(5)- C5H4) Rh(PPh3)( E2C2B10H10)] (2) ( E = S ( 10a) and Se ( 10b)). All complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, NMR spectra (H-1, C-13, P-31 and B-11 NMR) and IR spectroscopy. Abstract:Dichalcogenolato-functionalized nido-carborane ((NMe4)[7,8-(HS)2-7,8-C2B9H10]) L was developed for the formation of reactive 16-electron Ir and Rh complexes. The mono-nuclear 16-electron complex (NMe4)[Cp*Ir(7,8-(S)2-7,8-C2B9H10)] (1) and bi-nuclear 16-electron neutral metallacarborane (Cp*Ir)[1,2-(S)2-3-(η5-Cp*)-3,1,2-IrC2B9H9] (2) were synthesized step by step from the reactions of L with half-sandwich metal compounds. In the presence of NaH, the reaction of L with [Cp*RhCl2]2 afforded bi-nuclear complex (Cp*Rh)2(μ-H)[7,8-(S)2-7,8-C2B9H10] (3) in good yield. Additionally, [1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H10]2− was employed in the construction of M–M bonds, and the bi-nuclear complex (Cp*Ir)2[1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H9] (4) was synthesized through the reaction of [1-S-2-O-1,2-C2B10H10]2− with [Cp*IrCl2]2. All complexes were characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis.

Abstract:N-heterocyclic bis-carbene ligand (bis-NHC) which was derived from 1,1`-diisopropyl-3,3`-ethylenediimidazolium dibromide (L center dot 2HBr) via silver carbene transfer method, reacted with [(eta(6)-p-cymene) RuCl2](2) and [Cp*MCl2](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5, M = Ir, Rh) respectively, afforded complexes [(eta(6)-p-cymene) RuCl2](2)(L) (1), [Cp*IrCl2](2)(L) (2) and [Cp*RhCl(L)][Cp*RhCl3] (3). When [Cp*IrCl2](2) was treated with 2 equiv AgOTf at first, and then reacted with bis-NHC ligand, [Cp*IrCl(L)]OTf (4) was obtained. The molecular structures of complexes 1-4 were determined by X-ray single crystal analysis, showing that 1 and 2 adopted bridging coordination mode, 3 and 4 adopted chelating coordination mode. Abstract:The synthesis of half-sandwich binuclear transition-metal complexes containing the Cab(C,C) chelate ligands (Cab(C,C) = C2B10H10 (1)) is described. 1Li(2) was reacted with chloride-bridged dimers [ Cp*RhCl-(mu- Cl)](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-C-5(CH3)(5)), [Cp'RhCl(mu-Cl)](2) (Cp' = eta(5)-1,3-tBu(2)C(5)H(3)), [Cp*IrCl(mu-Cl)](2) and [(p-cymene)-RuCl( mu-Cl)](2) to give half-sandwich binuclear complexes [ Cp*Rh(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 2), [Cp'Rh(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) [3),[ Cp*Ir(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 4) and [(p-cymene) Ru(mu-Cl)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 5), respectively. Addition reactions of the ruthenium complex 5 with air gave [( p-cymene)(2)Ru-2(mu-OH)(mu-Cl)](Cab(C,C)) ( 6), rhodium complex 2 with LiSPh gave [Cp*Rh(mu-SPh)](2)(Cab(C,C)) ( 7). The complexes were characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Abstract:The assembly of soluble, air- stable, binuclear structures, namely {( p- cymene) Ru[S2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu-pyz) ( 4), {Cp*Co[S2C2( B10H10)]} (2)(mu- pyz) ( 5), {Cp*Co[S2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu- bpy) ( 6), {Cp*Co[S2C2(B10H10)]}(2) (mu- bpe) ( 7) and {Cp* Ir[E2C2( B10H10)]}(2)(mu- bpo) (E = S ( 8a), Se ( 8b)), in which organometallic units are bridged by pyridyl- based organic linkers, are synthesized. Abstract:Half-sandwich iridium and rhodium complexes with three different coordination modes were successfully synthesized by using the monophosphine-o-carborane sulfide 1-SPPh2-1,2-closo-C2B10H11 (1) as the ligand. Treatments of the dimeric metal complexes [Cp*M(mu-Cl)Cl](2) (M = Ir, Rh; Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5) with the lithium salt of monophosphine-o-carborane sulfide generate the C,S-coordinated complexes [Cp*IrCl(Cab(C,S))] (2) and [Cp*RhCl(Cab(C,S))] (3) (Cab(C,S) = (1-SPPh2-1,2-closo- C2B10H10)(-)), respectively. Compound 1 can be modified to give the corresponding thiol 1-SH-2-SPPh2-1,2-closo-C2B10H10 (4). The unexpected B,S,S' coordination mode product [Cp*Ir(Cab(B,S,S'))] (5) (Cab(B,S,S') = (eta(1)-S')(eta(1)-SPPh2)-(eta(1)-1,2-closo-C2B10H9)) through B-H activation was obtained by the reaction of [Cp*Ir(mu-Cl)Cl](2) with the lithium salt of 4. However, [Cp*Rh(mu-Cl)Cl](2) gave the product [Cp*RhCl(Cab(S,S'))] (6) (Cab(S,S') = (1-S'-2-SPPh2-1,2-closo- C2B10H10)(-)) with the S,S' mode under the same conditions. When it was heated in CH3OH, complex 6 gradually transformed from a closo-carborane complex to the zwitterionic nido-carborane complex [Cp*Rh(7-S'-8-(SPPh2)-7,8-C2B9H10)] (7). They represent the first examples of half-sandwich complexes incorporating a monophosphine-o-carborane sulfide ligand. In addition, the iridium complex 2 exhibits catalytic activity up to 1.40 x 10(6) g of PNB (mol of Ir)(-1) h(-1) for the polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst. All complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. The structures of 1, 2, and 5-7 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Metallocene complex (Cp2ZrCl2)-Zr-tt (Cp-tt = eta(5)-1,3-(Bu2C5H3)-Bu-t) (1) has been prepared from the reaction of LiCptt with ZrCl4 in good yield. Reactions of 1 with dilithium dichalcogenolate o-carboranes afforded new type of half-sandwich compounds with dichalcogenolate o-carboranyl ligands [Li(THF)(4)][(CpZr)-Zr-tt(E2C2B10H10)(2)] (E = S, 2a; E = Se, 2b) in which only one cyclopentadienyl ring ligand existed. Complexes 1 and 2a were structurally characterized by X-ray analyses. In complex 2a, the Zr(IV) ion is eta(5)-bound to one 1,3-di-tert-cyclopentadienyl ring and a-bound to four mu(2)-sulfur atoms of two dithio-carboranes. The zirconium atom and four sulfur atoms form a distorted pyramid. The coordination sphere around the zirconium atom resembles in a piano stool structure with four legs of sulfur atoms and the fulcrum at the zirconium atom.

Abstract:16-Electron half-sandwich rhodium complexes containing carborane ligands of two different σ- and π- types 3,3-μ-(1′,2′-C2B10H10-1′,2′-S2-)-4-L-3,1,2-RhC2B9H10 (L = SMe2, NMe3, NMe2CH2Ph) were synthesized for the first time. Abstract:The half-sandwich cobalt(III) and rhodium(III) complexes with pyridine-2-thiolato ligands Cp*Co(PyS)I (3) and Cp*Rh(PyS)Cl (4) [Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, PyS = pyridine-2-thiolate] were obtained by reactions of lithium pyridine-2-thiolate (PySLi) with Cp*Co(CO)I-2 (1) and [Cp*RhCl2](2) (2), respectively, in high yield. Complexes 3 and 4 reacted with monodentate LiSC2(H)B10H10 to give Cp*Co(PYS)[SC2(H)B10H10] (5) and Cp*Rh(PyS)[SC2(H)B10H10] (6), respectively. Reactions of 3 and 4 with Li2S2C2B10H10 resultedin C-Hactivation of amethyl group of the Cp* of the cobalt complex to give [(C5Me4CH2SC5H4N)CO(S2C2B10H10)] (7). No such activation of a methyl group of the Cp* of the rhodium complex occurred, and Cp*Rh[Py(H)S](S2C2B10H10) (8) was the product.

Abstract:The 16-electron half-sandwich rhodium complex [Cp*Rh{E2C2(B10H10)}] [Cp* = eta5-C5Me5, E = S (1a), Se (1b)] [Cp*Rh{E2C2(B10H10)} = eta5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl[1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-dichalcogenolato]rhodium] reacted with Mo(CO)3(py)3 in the presence of BF3.Et2O in THF solution to afford the {Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)]}2Mo(CO)2 (E = S (3a); Se (3b)), {Cp*Rh[S2C2(B10H10)]}{Mo(CO)2[S2C2(B10H10)]} (4). The voluminous di-tert-butyl substituted Cp half-sandwich rhodium complex [Cp'Rh{E2C2(B10H10)}] [E = S (2a), Se (2b)] [CpRh{E2C2(B10H10)} = eta5-(1,3-di(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl-[1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-dichalcogenolato]rhodium) reacted with W(CO)3(py)3 in the presence of BF3.Et2O in THF solution to give the {Cp'Rh[S2C2(B10H10)]}{W(CO)2[S2C2(B10H10)]} (5) and {Cp'Rh[Se2C2(B10H10)]}(mu-CO)[W(CO)3] (6), respectively. The complexes have been fully characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analyses. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes 3-6 are reported.

Abstract:Treatment of 16 e complex ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 10 ) ( 1 ) with PhCH(OH)C≡CH in CH 2 Cl 2 at room temperature leads to two novel complexes ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 9 )(PhCH=CCH 2 OCH(Ph)C≡CH) ( 2 ) and ( p -cymene)Ru(S 2 C 2 B 10 H 9 )(PhCH(OH)C=CH 2 ) ( 3 ). Both complexes have been characterized through elemental analysis, mass, IR and NMR spectroscopies. Notably, complex 2 has been studied by X-ray diffraction. It has been determined that complex 2 crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P with: a = 11.1020(10) Å, b = 11.8445(10) Å, c = 13.8071(12) Å, α = 78.3630(10)°, β = 75.7330(10)°, γ = 68.7580(10)°, C 30 H 38 B 10 ORuS 2 , M r = 687.89, V = 1627.3(2) Å 3 , ρ = 1.404 g/cm 3 , Z = 2, F (000) = 704, μ(Mo K α ) = 0.636 mm –1 , R = 0.0388 and ω R = 0.1100 for 5658 observed reflections ( I > 2σ( I )). The formation mechanisms for the title complexes have been studied.
