Abstract:Abstract Writing is an important part of English, and it is one of the abilities of communication that students must need. However, there are many problems in the writing process. The students and teachers do not pay much attention to the English writing, and the college school students’ writing is not so good. Scaffolding teaching is a specific teaching method based on the Constructivist Theory. The author applied the Scaffolding teaching method to the teaching of English writing in College for six weeks. The author tries to test whether scaffolding method stimulates students’ interest in writing, and improve students’ proficiency in English writing.

Abstract:The present study aimed at investigating the effects of learning lexical chunks on the writing performance of EFL Chinese learners of Grade three students in Middle school, and at the same time taking into consideration the examining participants’ use of lexical chunks and their knowledge of them. After two rounds of action research, through questionnaire, test, interview and classroom observation data analysis, the author found that: 1. The average writing score of students increased by 1.67 points, with an obvious improvement effect. Second, students' writing confidence, chunk writing awareness and writing methods have also been greatly improved. 3. The number of language chunks written by students increased on the second test, but decreased on the third test. According to the author's interview on students' familiarity with writing topics, students think that familiar writing topics make them more able to express their ideas.

Abstract:Lexical chunks are considered as composites of form and function and they are the ideal units of language learning and teaching. This study aims to review the role of lexical chunks in writing and discuss its pedagogical implications for college English teaching. Through reviewing the related research on lexical chunks, it is found that most of the research supports that lexical chunks play vital role in improving fluency, accuracy and idiomaticity of English writing. In view of these findings, this study suggests that it is necessary and feasible in Chinese universities to apply the lexical approach to English teaching, divert students’ attention to larger segments of texts and cultivate students’ awareness of lexical chunks. However, this study is just a bibliographic review of the research on lexical chunks and doesn’t conduct any experiment on the application of lexical approach in classroom and its effects on English writing.

Abstract:This article introduces the theoretical basis of the Length Approach and the basic idea of the Length Approach, and explains the teaching design of the Length Approach which includes the teaching goal, teaching methods, classroom teaching, evaluation and feedback.For a long time, writing has always been one of the weakest links in college English teaching in China. College English textbooks in China indicate that writing is one part of intensive reading, or more accurately, subordinate to vocabulary practice and grammar drill. Compared with other language skills, less than enough class time is allocated to writing, and little preparation is done for written work in class. The teaching of writing in the English teaching classroom often goes this way: the teacher gives a topic or a selection of topics, a set of requirements, and a time limit. The students finish the task within the time limit and hand in the final product, and then receive a grade, perhaps a response and another assignment. The efficiency of writing course is very low. Students' poor performance in the CET-4 (College English Test Band-4) and CET-6 (College English Test Band-6) can serve as an illustration of the low efficiency.Teaching English writing is always the most difficult part of English education in China. Because writing is just a part of intensive reading, there are few course periods for teaching it in class. Therefore, teachers have no time to pay much attention to the teaching of writing which is thought to be time-consuming and inefficient. In order to pass CET-4 or CET-6, a cram session for composition guidance has become a common teaching mode in most colleges. Students are lack of real communicative desire, and their subjective initiative and creative thinking are limited. The lag of writing teaching has resulted in a serious imbalance between the input and the output, affecting the students' language knowledge internalization. In this case, the Length Approach, advocated by Professor Wang Chuming, comes into being and brings a new enlightenment to the college English writing teaching.

Abstract:The learning and acquisition of lexical chunks is an essential part in language learning and it cannot be overlooked.The teaching of lexical chunks focuses on the prefabricated chunks,enables the students to master a large number of chunks and ensure them to express their ideas properly through processing and combining various chunks in order to communicate with each other.In language teaching,the teachers should put more emphasis on the input of lexical chunks and create a variety of situations for the students to extract,select and combine the lexical chunks.In this way,the teachers can improve the students’ ability of English output.

Investigating the Use of Chunks in Chinese-English Interpretation by College English Majors

Abstract:Chunks have attracted much research attention in SLA in recent years. The present study investigated L2 learners＇ use of chunks in oral interpretation. By analyzing a small-scale oral interpretation corpus （composed of transcripts of 200 senior English majors＇ performances in a Chinese-English interpreta- tion task） and interview data of 12 student interpreters, this study yielded the following major fmdings ： 1 ） the overall occur- rence of chunks in the interpretation corpus was relatively low, with the standardized frequency being 62.3 indicating students＇ lack of competence in using chunks in oral interpretation;2） the accuracy rate of the use of chunks in the corpus reached 86. 6%, and the erroneous chunks showed deviations from the target chunks in either grammar or collocation;3） the occurrence of the grammatically-deviated chunks was probably caused by the lapse of memory （ and thus the incomplete recall） of the target chunks, whereas the collocationally-deviated chunks might result from shortage of chunks or storage of erroneous chunks in the student interrupters＇ mental lexicon, or from the pressure of the interpretation task itself. Based on the above findings, it is sug- gested that teaching of chunks be included into the classroom in- struction of oral interpretation.

Abstract:Anchored in the researchers’ investigation and experience during the internship at a middle school in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, this dissertation, carried out under the guidance of the theory of chunk teaching method, sorts out the current research results and findings on chunk teaching method, and then analyzes the differences between the chunk teaching method and other traditional writing teaching methods from the perspectives of contents and functions, which draws a conclusion that the utilization of chunk teaching method in China is of great significance to the improvement of middle school students’ abilities in English writing. Before writing this paper, researchers conducted a series of preliminary preparations such as questionnaires, interviews and the same-topic writing tests. With that in mind, this dissertation reveals the chunk teaching method’s capability of more or strengthening middle students’ English writing ability, and thus demonstrates the effectiveness of chunk recitation in English writing teaching in China’s middle schools, which provides reference and critical materials for scholars in this field.

Abstract:The ability to effectively use vocabulary is a crucial aspect of language learning, and the development of this skill requires extensive exposure to idiomatic words and expressions. Previous research has shown that the main difference between intermediate and advanced English as a foreign language (EFL) learners is the size of their mental lexicon rather than their knowledge of grammar. In fact, the key to language learning progress is not the understanding of individual words or grammar, but the ability to assimilate the dynamic connections between different words. The use of lexical chunks has been identified as a key characteristic of proficient language learners (Schmitt, 2000). However, in the teaching context of this study, the use of lexical chunks has not been effectively emphasized in EFL education. In order to explore the reasons for this lack of emphasis, this qualitative study will interview three in-service EFL teachers to examine their teaching methods and identify potential factors that may contribute to the underutilization of lexical chunk instruction. The findings of this study will provide insight into ways to improve the teaching of lexical chunks and ultimately enhance the language proficiency of EFL learners.

Abstract:This paper uses a questionnaire to find out that the cognitive ability of higher vocational college students in English prefabricated chunks is weak, and there are many problems such as insufficient knowledge reserve of prefabricated chunks and weak awareness of their use. The aim is to develop students’ learning habits of memorizing, understanding, applying and transferring English language with prefabricated chunks as the smallest unit.

Abstract:Based on the monologues by 56 Chinese English majors in their first year and fourth year and 15 American college students,this paper makes a contrastive analysis of chunk features in terms of frequency,accuracy and variation.The results indicate that there are both similarities and differences in the use of chunks by the Chinese EFL learners and the native speakers;the Chinese learners have made real progress in their speech over three years;despite their near-native language competence,accuracy still remains a problem for the Chinese learners;comparatively speaking,the American students show a much stronger sense of chunk choice with respect to the pragmatic features,such as appropriateness and politeness.The findings contain some pedagogical implications for second language chunk acquisition and oral English instruction.

Abstract:Message-oriented element plays the role of content expression and information transmission.This study focuses on the message-oriented elements in college non-English majors' oral English in the COLSEC,the results have indicated that the students of different proficiency groups have differences in the overall discourse contribution and in the use of the message-oriented elements,and that the students have inadequate use of communicative strategies.It has thus been concluded that our teaching of spoken English could benefit from shifting its focus from on single-word centered approach to word chunks and use of organizational strategies.

Abstract:Critical thinking skills are very important to the cultivation of applied talents. In order to cultivate critical thinking skills in writing of non-English major college students, the research group made detailed investigations on related studies. Then the study analyzed the status quo of college English writing teaching by employing quantitative and qualitative research design. Based on the above study, the research group put forward effective strategies of cultivating critical thinking skills in college English writing under blended learning model. The strategies suggest break ing college English teachers’ stereotyped teaching concepts, enhanc ing their own critical thinking skills, se t t ing up clear teaching objectives, perfect ing the teaching process of English writing, optimiz ing learning resources and establish ing a comprehensive evaluation system. The research result can greatly exercise students’ judgment and develop their minds, so as to enhance their critical thinking skills and improve the cultivation of talents.

Abstract:A large number of empirical studies have demonstrated the impact of lexical chunks on foreign language learning. However, reliable and efficient use of the lexical approach remains a problem. In this paper, a revised chunk teaching approach, based on Data-Driven Learning (DDL) activities and language awareness theory, is proposed and tested. Taking an action research approach, the effects of DDL activities on increasing the lexical awareness of intermediate EFL learners were investigated. A 16-week course, using the teaching pattern of EIODI (Expose-Identify-Observe-Discover-Internalize) along with recognition and production tasks, was used to teach 158 intermediate EFL first-year university students. Quantitative questionnaire data from an in-class survey and a university course assessment survey revealed that the learners increased their awareness of lexical chunks and developed positive attitudes toward this approach. In addition, they reported a positive impact on their English proficiency; claims were supported by a statistical comparison of Finals for College English Course test scores for the two succeeding academic years. This research highlights the importance of increasing learners' language awareness and using effective DDL activities.

Abstract:This paper first presents in rather detail the project of a survey on the problems existing in English writing.The data are collected from 537 Chinese students of three colleges.The survey was conducted following Hasan's theory of Generic Structure Potential.The result confirms our hypothesis that Chinese college students do not have strong genre awareness apart from having problems in lexis,grammar and other aspects.This strengthens our belief that students need to start writing at the discourse level and to be exposed to more practical genres,and that both teachers and students need particularly to build up genre awareness.

Abstract:This paper is the third article of the application of the genre teaching method into the English writing.Based on Hasan's theory of Generic Structure Potential and Martin's theory of macrostructure,the paper elaborates on the two-term-long experimental progress of the college English teaching,including the theoretical foundation,designing progress,the results.The paper proves the adaptation of the generic structure potential to the college English writing under the Chinese context and points out its limitation,aiming at promoting the application of this theory in this area and enhancing students' ability of discourse analysis and English writing.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern technology, it is imperative for English Educators to implement the feasible teaching strategy to promote teaching competence in college English. According the POA, writing is regarded as an output capability, furthermore, assessment is a critical procedure in teaching practice. What’s more, process approach takes writing as a recursive mental cognitive process, creative thinking process and social interactive process. Therefore, we should attach great significance to the advancement of students’ writing competence. Consequently, Teacher-Student Collaborative Assessment (TSCA) can be utilized to evaluate students’ feedback in a scientific and comprehensive way. Specifically speaking, student’s composition can be examined in terms of diversified approaches including teacher assessment, self-assessment, peer assessment and automated assessment. It is noteworthy that “pigai.org” is an effective approach in assessing students’ composition. The paper concentrates on the teaching design of college English writing based on process approach.

Abstract:This paper reports a survey of the researches on L2 chunks published in 13 major domestic linguistic journals over the past 10 years.It identifies four features of the researches:(1) the researches on L2 chunks have been generally on the rise;(2) the major research areas include definitions and functions of chunks,use of chunks,measurement of chunks,acquisition of chunks,chunk and lexicographical studies,and research review,which all present their own developmental patterns;(3) the corpus-based approach has been playing a dominant role in the researches.The survey results also indicate that the researches have lost their balance in research contents,methods,and modes.Finally,the paper puts forward some suggestions for future L2 chunk researches in China.

Abstract:The research aimed to assess the associations among the implementation of meta-cognitive strategies, the support of automated writing evaluation feedback system and the English writing performance of Chinese EFL college students. The findings of the research indicated that incorporating meta-cognitive strategies during the writing process and utilizing automated writing evaluation feedback significantly contributed to the enhancement of English writing skills among students. A majority of the respondents reported actively employing various meta-cognitive strategies while writing and receiving substantial knowledge, intellectual, and emotional support through automatic writing evaluation feedback, resulting in noticeable improvements in their writing abilities. This study offers English administrators and teachers’ valuable insights that can help foster English language proficiency among Chinese EFL college students. Furthermore, the study recommended that future research should explore additional challenges and concerns related to English writing for EFL college students, providing opportunities for academics to delve deeper into this area.
