Abstract:In this manuscript, we discuss the roughness of nonuniform exponential dichotomies on a time scale in a Banach space and give the existence results for nonuniform and uniform exponential dichotomy for the time scale. We extend and unify the previous results by considering the equation on a time scale. For a given linear equation on a time scale, the existence of exponential dichotomy persists under an adequately small variable linear perturbation. To establish the results, we acquire related roughness results for the case of uniform exponential contractions. In the end, a suitable example is given for illustration.

Abstract:Firstly, we propose a concept of uniformly almost periodic functions on almost periodic time scales and investigate some basic properties of them. When time scale T = R or Z , our definition of the uniformly almost periodic functions is equivalent to the classical definitions of uniformly almost periodic functions and the uniformly almost periodic sequences, respectively. Then, based on these, we study the existence and uniqueness of almost periodic solutions and derive some fundamental conditions of admitting an exponential dichotomy to linear dynamic equations. Finally, as an application of our results, we study the existence of almost periodic solutions for an almost periodic nonlinear dynamic equations on time scales.

Tangency bifurcation of invariant manifolds in a slow-fast system

Abstract:We study a three-dimensional dynamical system in two slow variables and one fast variable. We analyze the tangency of the unstable manifold of an equilibrium point with "the" repelling slow manifold, in the presence of a stable periodic orbit emerging from a Hopf bifurcation. This tangency heralds complicated and chaotic mixed-mode oscillations. We classify these solutions by studying returns to a two-dimensional cross section. We use the intersections of the slow manifolds as a basis for partitioning the section according to the number and type of turns made by trajectory segments. Transverse homoclinic orbits are among the invariant sets serving as a substrate of the dynamics on this cross-section. We then turn to a one-dimensional approximation of the global returns in the system, identifying saddle-node and period-doubling bifurcations. These are interpreted in the full system as bifurcations of mixed-mode oscillations. Finally, we contrast the dynamics of our one-dimensional approximation to classical results of the quadratic family of maps. We describe the transient trajectory of a critical point of the map over a range of parameter values.

Abstract:The paper develops and studies a very general notion of dichotomy, referred to as "nonuniform $(h,k,\mu,\nu)$-dichotomy". The new notion contains as special cases most versions of dichotomy existing in the literature. The paper then provides corresponding new versions of robustness, Hartman-Grobman theorem, and stable manifold theorem for nonautonomous dynamical systems in Banach spaces in term of the nonuniform $(h,k,\mu,\nu)$-dichotomy.

Abstract:We prove the existence of local stable, unstable, and center manifolds for stochastic semiflows induced by rough differential equations driven by rough paths valued stochastic processes around random fixed points of the equation. Examples include stochastic differential equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > \frac{1}{4}$. In case the top Lyapunov exponent is negative, we derive almost sure exponential stability of the solution.

Abstract:Geometric singular perturbation theory provides a powerful mathematical framework for the analysis of 'stationary' multiple time-scale systems which possess a critical manifold, i.e. a smooth manifold of steady states for the limiting fast subsystem, particularly when combined with a method of desingularization known as blow-up. The theory for 'oscillatory' multiple time-scale systems which possess a limit cycle manifold instead of (or in addition to) a critical manifold is less developed, particularly in the non-normally hyperbolic regime. We use the blow-up method to analyse the global oscillatory transition near a regular folded limit cycle manifold in a class of three time-scale 'semi-oscillatory' systems with two small parameters. The systems considered behave like oscillatory systems as the smallest perturbation parameter tends to zero, and stationary systems as both perturbation parameters tend to zero. The additional time-scale structure is crucial for the applicability of the blow-up method, which cannot be applied directly to the two time-scale oscillatory counterpart of the problem. Our methods allow us to describe the asymptotics and strong contractivity of all solutions which traverse a neighbourhood of the global singularity. Our main results cover a range of different cases with respect to the relative time-scale of the angular dynamics and the parameter drift. We demonstrate the applicability of our results for systems with periodic forcing in the slow equation, in particular for a class of Liénard equations. Finally, we consider a toy model used to study tipping phenomena in climate systems with periodic forcing in the fast equation, which violates the conditions of our main results, in order to demonstrate the applicability of classical (two time-scale) theory for problems of this kind.

Abstract:In this article, we establish the Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan dichotomy for geodesic flows on certain manifolds with no conjugate points: either the geodesic flow is conservative and ergodic, or it is completely dissipative and non-ergodic. We also show several equivalent conditions to the conservativity, such the Poincaré series diverges at the critical exponent, the conical limit set has full Patterson-Sullivan measure, etc.

Abstract:We prove that the small quantum t-connection on a closed monotone symplectic manifold is of exponential type and has quasi-unipotent regularized monodromies at t=0. This answers a conjecture of Katzarkov-Kontsevich-Pantev and Galkin-Golyshev-Iritani for those classes of symplectic manifolds. The proof follows a reduction to positive characteristics argument, and the main tools of the proof are Katz's local monodromy theorem in differential equations and quantum Steenrod operations in equivariant Gromov-Witten theory with mod p coefficients.

Abstract:We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:We develop a new tool, the time inhomogeneous Poisson equation in the whole space and with a terminal condition at infinity, to study the asymptotic behavior of the non-autonomous multi-scale stochastic system with irregular coefficients, where both the fast and the slow equation depend on the highly oscillating time component. In particular, periodic, quasi-periodic and almost periodic coefficients are allowed. The strong convergence of double averaging principle as well as the functional central limit theorem with homogenized-averaged diffusion coefficient are established. Moreover, we also obtain rates of convergence, which do not depend on the regularities of the coefficients with respect to the time component and the fast variable.

Abstract:Topological phases are generally characterized by topological invariants denoted by integer numbers. However, different topological systems often require different topological invariants to measure, such as geometric phases, topological orders, winding numbers, etc. Moreover, geometric phases and its associated definitions usually fail at critical points. Therefore, it's challenging to predict what would occur during the transformation between two different topological phases. To address these issues, in this work, we propose a general definition based on fidelity and trace distance from quantum information theory: manifold distance. This definition does not rely on the berry connection of the manifolds but rather on the information of the two manifolds - their ground state wave functions. Thus, it can measure different topological systems (including traditional band topology models, non-Hermitian systems, and topological order models, etc.) and exhibit some universal laws during the transformation between two topological phases. Our research demonstrates that when the properties of two manifolds are identical, the distance and associated higher-order derivatives between them can smoothly transition to each other. However, for two different topological manifolds, the higher-order derivatives exhibit various divergent behaviors near the critical points. For subsequent studies, we expect the method to be generalized to real-space or non-lattice models, in order to facilitate the study of a wider range of physical platforms such as open systems and many-body localization.

Abstract:We study numerically and analytically a stochastic group selection model in which a population of asexually reproducing individuals, each of which can be either altruist or non-altruist, is subdivided into $M$ reproductively isolated groups (demes) of size $N$. The cost associated with being altruistic is modelled by assigning the fitness $1- \tau$, with $\tau \in [0,1]$, to the altruists and the fitness 1 to the non-altruists. In the case that the altruistic disadvantage $\tau$ is not too large, we show that the finite $M$ fluctuations are small and practically do not alter the deterministic results obtained for $M \to \infty$. However, for large $\tau$ these fluctuations greatly increase the instability of the altruistic demes to mutations. These results may be relevant to the dynamics of parasite-host systems and, in particular, to explain the importance of mutation in the evolution of parasite virulence.

Abstract:For a class of $(N+1)$-dimensional systems of differential delay equations with a cyclic and monotone negative feedback structure, we construct a two-dimensional invariant manifold, on which phase curves spiral outward towards a bounding periodic orbit. For this to happen we assume essentially only instability of the zero equilibrium. Methods of the Poincaré-Bendixson theory due to Mallet-Paret and Sell are combined with techniques used by Walther for the scalar case $(N = 0)$. Statements on the attractor location and on parameter borders concerning stability and oscillation are included. The results apply to models for gene regulatory systems, e.g. the `repressilator' system.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space R2+n, and show that this kind of equation enjoys many interesting properties nonstrict hyperbolicity, constant multiplicity of eigenvalues, boundedness of characteristic propagation speeds, linear degeneracy of all characteristic fields, richness, etc. Without any smallness assumption of initial data, we give the necessary and sufficient condition on the global existence of classical solutions of the Cauchy problem. Based on this, we prove some global existence theorems on classical solutions of the Dirichlet problem and Neumann problem for this kind of equation. Finally, we present an explicit exact representation, involving two independent arbitrary functions of general solution.

Abstract:We consider small nonlinear perturbations of linear systems on a time scale with the phase space being finite or infinite-dimensional. For $\Delta$-differential operators, corresponding to linear dynamic systems we consider their solvability in various functional spaces. Based on these techniques, we prove several results on the existence of a bounded solution for some systems with small nonlinearities. Thus we introduce some generalizations of the classic hyperbolicity property (exponential dichotomy) for systems of ordinary differential equations. Besides, we introduce the Lyapunov regularity condition that coincides with the classic one for ordinary differential equations. For regular systems, we prove some criteria for the existence of bounded solutions of perturbed systems.

Abstract:In A. Czornik et al. [ Spectra based on Bohl exponents and Bohl dichotomy for non-autonomous difference equations , J. Dynam. Differ. Equ. (2023)] the concept of Bohl dichotomy is introduced which is a notion of hyperbolicity for linear non-autonomous difference equations that is weaker than the classical concept of exponential dichotomy. In the class of systems with bounded invertible coefficient matrices which have bounded inverses, we study the relation between the set BD of systems with Bohl dichotomy and the set ED of systems with exponential dichotomy. It can be easily seen from the definition of Bohl dichotomy that ED⊆BD . Using a counterexample we show that the closure of ED is not contained in BD . The main result of this paper is the characterization int⁡BD=ED . The proof uses upper triangular normal forms of systems which are dynamically equivalent and utilizes a diagonal argument to choose subsequences of perturbations each of which is constructed with the Millionshikov Rotation Method. An Appendix describes the Millionshikov Rotation Method in the context of non-autonomous difference equations as a universal tool.
