Contradictory Relationship Between Raw Milk Supply and Demand in China- an Empirical Analysis

Abstract:With the fast growth of dairy production in China,the contradiction between raw milk supply and demand is becoming more serious,which influenced the development of dairy industry in China.In this paper,we analyzed the present situation of raw milk supply and demand both in China and in different provinces by using the ratio of self-support model.The results indicated that during the 13 years from 1995 to 2007,the raw milk supply is sufficient and even in surplus from 1999 to 2006 and in the other years the supply is insufficient all over the country.In 2006,the supply is sufficient for most provinces in the north of China and it is in short supply in the south of China.In 2007,the raw milk supply is short for most provinces in China.Based on this analysis,we established two econometric models to estimate the factors influencing the raw milk supply and demand,respectively.The rsults showed that the raw milk supply is decided by the price of raw milk and feed fodder and the demand is influenced by the processing capacity,sales revenue,and consumption.Finally,we gave some policy recommendations to solve the contradiction between raw milk supply and demand.They are:to regulate and control the raw milk production and dairy enterprises;monitor the amount of the imported milk powder;establish a reasonable mechanism for raw milk price formation;and expand the consumption market for dairy products,etc.
