Abstract:Visualization techniques for 3D scalar fields can be used to display constant value surfaces as well as to simulate transmission effect of X-ray. In this paper, ray-casting approach is applied to render surface from volume data of color segmented medical images. A novel and effective formula is proposed to estimate the surface normal by potential functions. Some implementation details are introduced, and highly realistic images of object surfaces are obtained.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:HeartModel (HM) is a fully automated adaptive quantification software that can quickly quantify left heart volume and left ventricular function. This study used HM to quantify the left ventricular end-diastolic (LVEDV) and end-systolic volumes (LVESV) of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), coronary artery heart disease with segmental wall motion abnormality, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) to determine whether there were differences in the feasibility, accuracy, and repeatability of measuring the LVEDV, LVESV, LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and left atrial end-systolic volume (LAESV) and to compare these measurements with those obtained with traditional two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) methods.AIM:To evaluate the application value of HM in quantifying left heart chamber volume and LVEF in clinical patients.METHODS:A total of 150 subjects who underwent 2D and 3D echocardiography were divided into 4 groups: (1) 42 patients with normal heart shape and function (control group, Group A); (2) 35 patients with DCM (Group B); (3) 41 patients with LV remodeling after acute myocardial infarction (Group C); and (4) 32 patients with HCM (Group D). The LVEDV, LVESV, LVEF and LAESV obtained by HM with (HM-RE) and without regional endocardial border editing (HM-NE) were compared with those measured by traditional 2D/3D echocardiographic methods to assess the correlation, consistency, and repeatability of all methods.RESULTS:(1) The parameters measured by HM were significantly different among the groups (P < 0.05 for all). Compared with Groups A, C, and D, Group B had higher LVEDV and LVESV (P < 0.05 for all) and lower LVEF (P < 0.05 for all); (2) HM-NE overestimated LVEDV, LVESV, and LAESV with wide biases and underestimated LVEF with a small bias; contour adjustment reduced the biases and limits of agreement (bias: LVEDV, 28.17 mL, LVESV, 14.92 mL, LAESV, 8.18 mL, LVEF, -0.04%). The correlations between HM-RE and advanced cardiac 3D quantification (3DQA) (r s = 0.91-0.95, P < 0.05 for all) were higher than those between HM-NE (r s = 0.85-0.93, P < 0.05 for all) and the traditional 2D methods. The correlations between HM-RE and 3DQA were good for Groups A, B, and C but remained weak for Group D (LVEDV and LVESV, r s = 0.48-0.54, P < 0.05 for all); and (3) The intraobserver and interobserver variability for the HM-RE measurements were low.CONCLUSION:HM can be used to quantify the LV volume and LVEF in patients with common heart diseases and sufficient image quality. HM with contour editing is highly reproducible and accurate and may be recommended for clinical practice.

Abstract:A high resolution three-dimensional (3D) volumetric display system utilizing a rotating light-emitting diode (LED) array is presented, which provides viewers with true depth cues, binocular parallax, accommodation and convergence, etc, and can be observed from any direction without the need for any special viewing aids. The data voxelization method for the system is presented. The evaluation of texture distortion due to the deviations of the voxel positions caused in voxelization is introduced. 3D models with two types of texture are built: one in which the gray scale is nearly invariant in the background, and the other in which the gray scale varies in the whole picture. The texture distortion of models with the two types of texture is evaluated and a numerical analysis is given. The relationship between texture distortion and voxelization precision is studied. Voxelization precision can be improved by shortening the voxelization step length. Experiments show that models with textures in which gray scale varies gradually in the whole picture need higher voxelization precision than textures with an invariant gray scale background. In order to obtain similar display quality, the ratio of the voxelization step length of models with the two types of texture is about 5/2.

Abstract:AIM three-dimensional reconstruction is the difficulties and focus in development of the medical application software.In this paper,OpenGL and Visualization Tool Kit are used to achieve the specific visualization based on the technology of surface rendering and volume rendering.To contrast the result,some CT data of developmental dysplasia of the Hip patients are reconstructed by using Marching Cube algorithm based on OpenGL and Marching Cube,Ray Casting algorithm which are based on VTK.Marching cube algorithm and Ray casting algorithm based on OpenGL and VTK can both better display the three-dimensional anatomical structure information of patient.Surface can provide effectively render surface of a three-dimensional,but the lack expression of internal information.Instead,volume rendering can greatly improve quality of image,but does not apply to the expression of real-time system.VTK visualization methods can implement simply and rapid display 3D data,it is lack of three-dimensional interactive features.Contrarily,OpenGL which is the underlying API can accomplish flexible interaction,but its code is more complex.

Abstract:Objective To research the visualization of congenital heart disease by three-dimensional echocardiographic(3DE) virtual endoscopy(VE) system. Methods Datasets.from 10 healthy children and 22 patients with congenital heart disease were collected (10 patients with atrial septal defects, 6 patients with ventricular septal defects and 6 patients with tetralogy of Fallot). 3DE heart models were reconstructed by virtual reality computing techniques and visualization in scientific computing techniques. The VE system was programmed under the C++ 6.0 language condition,the visualization toolkit (VTK) platform was employed to carry out the graphics and visualization utilities. The virtual eye can move along the navigation paths in the heart by manual camera movements. Results The VE can provide special information in aspects of intracardiac anatomy, The visible heart models show precisely complex anatomy structure and spatial relationships. 3DE intracardiac endoscopic imaging can thus be visualized and navigated successfully by the VE system. Conclusions 3DE VE is a new system for the visualization of congenital heart disease.

Abstract:Objective To study the technique of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and visualization based on isosurface and its application to diagnose the children congenital heart diseases. Methods Ultrasound images of healthy children's heart were sampled to he reconstructed and visualized. The same way to 30 isolated animal hearts with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and atrial septal defect (ASD) were also done. Results The results of 3D visualization of healthy children's heart were presented. The real defects and the result images of 3D reconstruction and visualization of the heart were compared. Conclusion The technique of 3D reconstruction and visualization discussed in this note will help the physician to diagnose the children complicacy congenital heart diseases.

Abstract:Background To evaluate the clinical value of foetal intelligent navigation echocardiography (5D Heart) for the display of key diagnostic elements in basic sections. Methods 3D volume datasets of 182 normal singleton foetuses were acquired with a four chamber view by using a volume probe. After processing the datasets by using 5D Heart, eight cardiac diagnostic planes were demonstrated, and the image qualities of the key diagnostic elements were graded by 3 doctors with different experiences in performing foetal echocardiography. Results A total of 231 volume datasets acquired from the 182 normal foetuses were used for 5D Heart analysis and display. The success rate of 8 standard diagnostic views was 88.2%, and the success rate of each diagnostic view was 55.8–99.2% and 70.7–99.0% for the random four chamber view as the initial section and for the apical four chamber view as the initial section, respectively. The success rate of each diagnostic element in the 8 diagnostic sections obtained by 5D Heart was 58.9%~ 100%. Excellent agreement was found between experienced sonographers and less-experienced sonographers (kappa> 0.769). Inter- and intra-observer agreement were substantial to near-perfect, kappa values ranging from 0.612 to 1.000 (Cohen’s kappa). Conclusions 5D Heart can significantly improve the image quality of key diagnostic elements in foetal echocardiography with low operator dependency and good reproducibility.

Abstract:Congenital heart defect is a leading cause of children mortality. Two-dimensional echocardiography is a safe and noninvasive diagnostic tool and two-dimensional images can be reconstructed to a three-dimensional model. However, for some complex congenital heart diseases, the visualization of three-dimensional cardiac tissue structure alone is not enough.Visualization of Wood flow patterns in a human heart is important to evaluate cardiac disease of patients. Color flow imaging is a well-established ultrasound mode and very valuable for visualizing the distribution of blood flow in a specific region of interest. However, blood flow patterns in a human heart have three-dimensional complex structure and change dynamically, but the output of color flow imaging is usually presented as a two-dimensional image on a cross section of a heart. The authors make use of an echocardiography system to acquire the data which include cardiac tissue structure and blood flow patterns, and construct an interactive visualization system for the three-dimensional heart and blood flow. With the visualization system, which possesses interactivity and a changeable view, users can easily understand the inner cardiac structure and blood flow in the heart.The images that we use are not only from actual patient data, but also from isolated porcine hearts and hearts of living dogs.

Abstract:Objective To explore the method of navigation and intervention of three-dimensional echocardiographic virtual endoscopic system. Methods Three-dimensional echocardiographic heart models were reconstructed by using surface rending and some application realized based on three-dimensional echocardiographic intro-cardiac endoscopic simulation system. Van Praagh segmental analysis procedure and the principle of topographic anatomy were used to analyze the volumetric images. Simulation in percutaneous transcatheter closure treatment of artial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD) were visualized. Results The virtual camera would move along the navigation path point manual camera movement. The visible heart models showed precisely complex anatomy structure and spatial relationships. VE could provide special information in aspects of intracardiac anatomy and simulate the interventional treatment of ASD and VSD. Conclusion Three-dimensional echocardiographic virtual endoscopy is a new method in diagnosis of congenital heart disease. It also opens an exciting opportunity in the field of surgical navigation and virtual interventional treatment of congenital heart disease.

Abstract:Virtual endoscopy(VE) is a new visualization method using 3D image data sets to simulate the tracks of a conventional endoscope.By using virtual reality computing techniques and visualization in scientific computing techniques,it can assist with the interpretation of 3D data of the heart in space and make it possible to 'dive' into the 3D model of the heart.A speckle reduction technique based on the homogeneous mask area filtering algorithm was applied to suppress the speckle noise,and then the denoised image was further processed by using the brFCM method to get an initial segmentation,after that,an integrated technique based on the combination of the multiscale analysis and texture-based contrast was used to obtain the final segmentation.The experimental results show that the proposed method can eliminate the speckle noise well and preserve the edge details of ultrasound images simultaneously and is helpful for visualization of 3DE virtual endoscopy.
Four-dimensional endocardial surface imaging with dynamic virtual reality rendering: a technical note

Abstract:Open heart surgery requires a proper understanding of the endocardial surface of the heart and vascular structures. While modern four-dimensional (4D) imaging enables excellent dynamic visualization of the blood pool, endocardial surface anatomy has not routinely been assessed. 4D image data were post-processed using commercially available virtual reality (VR) software. Using thresholding, the blood pool was segmented dynamically across the imaging volume. The segmented blood pool was further edited for correction of errors due to artifacts or inhomogeneous signal intensity. Then, a surface shell of an even thickness was added to the edited blood pool. When the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae were visualized, they were segmented separately using a different range of signal intensity for thresholding. Using an interactive cutting plane, the endocardial surface anatomy was reviewed from multiple perspectives by interactively applying a cutting plane, rotating and moving the model. In conclusions, dynamic three-dimensional (3D) endocardial surface imaging is feasible and provides realistic simulated views of the intraoperative scenes at open heart surgery. As VR is based on the use of all fingers of both hands, the efficiency and speed of postprocessing are markedly enhanced. Although it is limited, visualization of the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae is also possible.

Abstract:In order to reduce the risk of themoseeds hyperthemia clinical operation, an intuitive 3-D virtual patient needs to be reconstructed by the preoperative treatment planning system. The reconstruct results can supply the geometric physiological information of lesions and their surrounding tissues to form an optimal operation planning. In this study, the construction of 3D image intuitive environment of diagnosis and treatment in the system was investigated. On the basis of 2-D DICOM medical images, the 3-D data field was established and visually rendered, and the methods of volume rendering and surface rendering were correspondingly investigated. Results show that these two algorithms can provide specific rendering models for different organs. Volume rendering method can show good effects for 3-D body visualization and real-time interaction, and surface rendering method can extract iso-surface models to support tissue segmentation display and build thermal dose field.

Abstract:Virtual endoscopy (VE) is a new post-processing method that uses volumetric data sets to simulate the tracks of a “conventional” flexible endoscope. However, almost all studies of this method have involved virtual visualizations of the cardiovascular structures applied to computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) datasets. This paper introduces a novel visualization method called the “three-dimensional echocardiographic intracardiac endoscopic simulation system (3DE IESS)”, which uses 3D echocardiographic images in a virtual reality (VR) environment to diagnose congenital heart disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the feasibility of VE in the evaluation of congenital heart disease in children and its accuracy compared with 2DE. Three experienced pediatric cardiologists blinded to the patients’ diagnoses separately reviewed 40 two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) datasets and 40 corresponding VE datasets and judged whether abnormal intracardiac anatomy was present in terms of a five-point scale (1 = definitely absent; 2 = probably absent; 3 = cannot be determined; 4 = probably present; and 5 = definitely present). Compared with clinical diagnosis, the diagnostic accuracy of VE was 98.7% for ASD, 92.4% for VSD, 92.6% for TOF, and 94% for DORV, respectively. Diagnostic accuracy of VE was significantly higher than that of 2DE for TOF and DORV except for ASD and VSD. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for VE was closer to the optimal performance point than was the ROC curve for 2DE. The area under the ROC curve was 0.96 for VE and 0.93 for 2DE. Kappa values (range, 0.73–0.79) for VE and 2DE indicated substantial agreement. 3D echocardiographic VE can enhance our understanding of intracardiac structures and facilitate the evaluation of congenital heart disease.

Abstract:Detailed anatomical information is essential to optimize medical decisions for surgical and pre-operative planning in patients with congenital heart disease. The visualization techniques commonly used in clinical routine for the exploration of complex cardiac data are based on multi-planar reformations, maximum intensity projection, and volume rendering, which rely on basic lighting models prone to image distortion. On the other hand, cinematic rendering (CR), a three-dimensional visualization technique based on physically-based rendering methods, can create volumetric images with high fidelity. However, there are a lot of parameters involved in CR that affect the visualization results, thus being dependent on the user's experience and requiring detailed evaluation protocols to compare available solutions. In this study, we have analyzed the impact of the most relevant parameters in a CR pipeline developed in the open-source version of the MeVisLab framework for the visualization of the heart anatomy of three congenital patients and two adults from CT images. The resulting visualizations were compared to a commercial tool used in the clinics with a questionnaire filled in by clinical users, providing similar definitions of structures, depth perception, texture appearance, realism, and diagnostic ability.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach for visualizing the surfaces from 3D ultrasound data. 3D ultrasound data usually contain substantial quantity of speckle noise, which makes the extraction of smooth and continuous surfaces extremely difficult. In this paper, combining the partial differential equation model of anisotropic diffusion filter with the Lee filter, we present a new algorithm for handling 3D ultrasound data, aiming to suppress the speckle noise, and meanwhile, smooth the ultrasound image. Additionally, the marching cubes algorithm is applied to extract a smooth endocardial surface. Comparing experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach.

To select appropriate occluder device by simulating the result of percutaneous transcatheter closure treatment. Methods Visualize the children's cardiac using 3D volume render method, and simulate the shape of occluder device using 3D modeling method. Results Good results of these two methods can help doctors make an accurate diagnosis. Conclusion The method in this paper with rapid and accurate visualization might be an important method as a guider before the operation.

Abstract:Based on the integration of the advanced visualization toolkit (VTK) and the real-time rendering System (VolumePro), 4D View, a 3D real-time visualization system of medical image, which applies real-time 3D medical image (such as MR, CT image, etc.) visualization and interaction was developed. Firstly the VTK, VolumePro and their integration were introduced briefly; then the system design and function template of 4D View system was discussed in detail; finally some visualization results acquired through 4D View was illustrated. According to the results, 4D View system can effectively resolve the poor real-time characteristic of 3D medical image visualization and interaction, so it will have a wide application area of the clinical diagnosis, therapy and medical research, etc in future.

Abstract:Objective To explore the feasibility of three-dimensional echocardiography in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease in children by virtual reality(VR) computing techniques and assess its initially clinical value.Methods Twenty children with normal heart and 30 children with congenital heart defect(10 patients with ASD,9 patients with VSD,and 11 patients with TOF) were selected for three-dimensional echocardiographic acquisition by HP SONOS 5500 system with TTO probe.After 2D image information of whole heart was obtained and virtual environment of VR heart models by virtual reality computing techniques was reconstructed,the interactive scenario and dynamic three-dimensional echocardiographic views were observed.Results All echocardiographic imagings were successfully reconstructed and VR heart structures were observed from many unique directions and angles.Study on virtual visualization of abnormal heart structure had been confirmed at operation or cardiac catheterization or three-dimensional echocardiography in the 30 children with congenital heart disease.Conclusion Three-dimensional echocardiography by virtual reality is a new technique in the field of diagnosis in congenital heart disease.
