Perceptions and Expectation Toward Engineering Curriculum Reform from Society

Abstract:The employers of the industrial sector is one of the important stakeholders of engineering education.By a survey of 232industry employers among 20enterprises in China,the research aims at revealing the industry employers ’ perceptions and expectation toward engineering graduates,the awareness and understanding of the engineering practice,the recommendations to curriculum reform.The results show that the requirements of social groups from the view of engineering professional organizations are:engineering curriculum should return to the engineering practice,face holistic engineering practice,and balance the non-technical and technical ability of engineering graduates.There are many problems and disadvantages reflecting on China ’ s undergraduate engineering curriculum.By this,we propose 4recommendations on engineering curriculum reform in China:updating the concept of engineering and curriculum,reconstructing the curriculum objectives,reorganizing the content of courses and design the learning experiences and teaching approach.The findings provide the social requirement basis for the curriculum reform of "the Plan for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers".
