Abstract:The translation of molecular-scale chirality into macroscopic helical architectures is an intriguing scientific challenge capable of furthering our insight into the mechanism of biological chiral translation and the development of new materials. In this work, chiral induction and transfer through the bottom-up self-assembly of a chiral π-electron donor template and an achiral π-electron acceptor was employed to generate macroscopic enantiomerically pure helical fibers. The dynamic nature of these supramolecular helical fibers allowed for the efficient exchange of their chiral templates for achiral components, but were sufficiently robust enough to exhibit a chiral memory effect, retaining their helicity and enantiomeric purity during the exchange. Abstract:Modulation of chiroptics, chiral phenomena of tonic switches. One of the most effective methods for applications, including chirality-specific biosensing and pho- the optical properties, is, pivotal in a variety of advanced :achieving this control is assembly of the optical moieties into chiral nanostructures. Lipopeptide self-assemblies have been extensively employed as soft templates to organize composites into low-dimensional superstructures due to their rigidity and ease of functionalization. Therefore, an appealing approach is to provide chiroptical control by using lipopeptide self assemblies as templates to assemble chromophores. Herein, two lipopeptidic molecules, namely, C-14-FFK and C-14-FK, composed of phenylalanine and lysine residues conjugated to a myristic acid chain, were custom-designed. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations indicated that C-14-FFK self-assembled to wide, slightly left-handed nanoribbons, while C-14-FK formed narrow, intensely right-handed nanofibers. The different chirality was derived from the distinct self-assembly driving forces, especially the molecular bending dimensions. These superstructures' presented an ideal capability to serve as soft templates to assemble porphyrin (ZnTPyP) through noncovalent electrostatic attractive interactions, or assemble the phenolic groups through covalent conjugation to peptide backbones. The distinct exciton coupling of the chromophores allowed their achiral optics to become chiral, showing negative Cotton effect when templated by nanoribbons and positive Cotton effect with nanofibers as templates. Following replacement of the lipopeptides with their D-type enantiomers, the handedness of the superstructures and the associated chiroptics were reversed and presented "mirror" symmetric CD signals to their L-type counterparts. These findings may pave the way to the formation of morphologically and chioptically controllable nanomaterials.

Abstract:There is growing interest in the design of synthetic molecules that are able to self-assemble into a polymeric chain with compact helical conformations, which is analogous to the folded state of natural proteins. Herein, we highlight supramolecular approach to the formation of helical architectures and their conformational changes driven by external stimuli. Helical organization in synthetic self-assembling systems can be achieved by the various types of noncovalent interactions, which include hydrogen bonding, solvophobic effects, and metal-ligand interactions. Since the external environment can have a large influence on the strength and configuration of noncovalent interactions between the individual components, stimulus-induced alterations in the intramolecular noncovalent interactions can result in dynamic conformational change of the supramolecular helical structure thus, driving significant changes in the properties of the materials. Abstract:Macroscopic enantiomerically pure helical supramolecular fibers are bottom-up assembled in aqueous media from a chiral pi-electron donor template and an achiral pi-electron acceptor. The helices can be assembled to the sub-millimeter scale with controlled handedness. These dynamic supramolecular architectures allow for a quantitative exchange of the chiral donor template with achiral analogues. During this process, a chiral memory effect was observed, affording enantiomerically pure helices composed entirely of achiral components.
Self-Assembly Of N-Shaped Rod-Coil Molecules Into Thermoresponsive Nanoassemblies: Construction Of Reversible Helical Nanofibers In Aqueous Environment

Abstract:Amphiphilic coil-rod-coil molecules 1-3, consisting of an n-shaped rod building block and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with a degree of polymerization of 5 linked through a biphenyl unit as the coil segment, were synthesized. Molecule 1 self-assembles into lamellar and hexagonal perforated layer structures, in the crystalline and liquid crystalline phases, respectively. Remarkably, molecule 2 incorporating lateral methyl groups between the rod and coil segments spontaneously self-organizes into hexagonal perforated layer and oblique columnar structures. The additional incorporation of a lateral butyl group at the center of the rod segment of molecule 2 generates molecule 3, which assumes an exclusively oblique columnar structure in the solid state. In aqueous solutions, molecule 1 self-assembles into fibrous aggregates, whereas molecules 2 and 3 exhibit a self-organizing capacity to form helical fibers. Additionally, circular dichroism (CD) experiments and atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements of molecule 3 highlight a switch of the helical sense to the opposite handedness, depending on the temperature of the aqueous solution.

Abstract:Helical topological structures are often found in chiral biological systems, but seldom in synthesized polymers. Now, controllable microphase separation of amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymers (LCBCs) consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and hydrophobic azobenzene-containing poly(methylacrylate) is combined with chirality transfer to fabricate helical nanostructures by doping with chiral additives (enantiopure tartaric acid). Through hydrogen-bonding interactions, chirality is transferred from the dopant to the aggregation, which directs the hierarchical self-assembly in the composite system. Upon optimized annealing condition, helical structures in film are fabricated by the induced aggregation chirality. The photoresponsive azobenzene mesogens in the LCBC assist photoregulation of the self-assembled helical morphologies. This allows the construction and non-contact manipulation of complicated nanostructures.

Abstract:Self-assembled lamellar nano- and microfilaments formed by select types of bent-core molecules are prime examples of the interplay between molecular conformation and morphological chirality. Here, we demonstrate how the strategic placement of chiral centers at C-1 and/or C-3 in the terminal alkyloxy side chains, largely based on a priori calculations of molecular conformation, leads to the predictable formation of increasingly complex nano- and microfilament morphologies. Adding to the previously described diversity of twisted and writhed filament types, we here demonstrate and explain the formation and coexistence of flat nanoribbons, nanocylinders, or nano- as well as microfilaments where the morphology spontaneously changes along the filament long axis. For some these more exotic types of filament morphology, helical multilayer filaments suddenly unwind to form flat nanoribbons that also twist again under preservation (not perversion) of the helical twist sense. Moreover, the morphologies formed by this series of molecules now allows us to demonstrate the complete transformation from flat multilayer ribbons over microfilaments and helical-wrapped nanocylinders to helical nanofilaments depending on the number and position of chiral centers in the aliphatic side chains.

Abstract:The construction of supramolecular polymers has been intensively pursued because the nanostructures formed through weak non-covalent interactions can be triggered by external stimuli leading to smart materials and sensors. Self-assemblies of coordination polymers consisting of metal ions and organic ligands in aqueous solution also provide particular contributions in this area. The main motivation for developing those coordination polymers originates from the value-added combination between metal ions and ligands. This review highlights the recent progress of the dynamic self-assembly of coordination polymers that result from the sophisticated molecular design, towards fabricating stimuli-responsive systems and bio-related materials. Dynamic structural changes and switchable physical properties triggered by various stimuli are summarized. Finally, the outlook for aqueous nanostructures originated from the dynamic self-assembly of coordination polymers is also presented.
Controlled Helicity of the Rigid-Flexible Molecular Assembly Triggered by Water Addition: from Nanocrystal to Liquid Crystal Gel and Aqueous Nanofibers

Abstract:Despite recent advances in synthetic nanometer-scale helical assembly, control of supramolecular chirality remains a challenge. Here, we describe the fine-tuning of the shape and morphology transitions of twisted and helical assembly from dumbbell-shaped rigid-flexible amphiphile triggered by concentration. The amphiphile 2 self-assembles into nonchiral 3D columnar crystals with alternative packing of aromatic segment in solid state. Remarkably, with the addition of water into the solid, the achiral crystal transforms into 2D hexagonally ordered liquid crystal gel with supramolecular chirality due to increased entropy of flexible coil in aqueous environment. Notably, the helical liquid crystal gel was observed to dissolve into optically active aqueous nanofibers caused by a conformational change of hydrophobic aromatic rods and enhanced hydro-volume of the ethylene oxide chains.
Smartly Tuning Supramolecular Chirality in Polymer Gels Via Photoexcitation-Induced Cooperative Self-Assembly

Abstract:Although supramolecular chirality tuning is prosperous in systems with small molecular building blocks, these systems lack structural strength and have limited practical applications. Conversely, polymer systems do not exhibit these drawbacks but suffer from topological chain entanglement, which often leads to large dynamic obstacles and therefore limits the tunability of supramolecular chirality. Herein, we report that by manipulating stoichiometry and employing light to alter the H-bond crosslinking between a photoexcitation-induced aggregatable molecule and high molecular weight poly(L-lactic acids), supramolecular chirality tuning of the polymer gel systems can be achieved in different ways through a cooperative self-assembly. Specifically, the Cotton effects of the examined systems can be negatively tuned by varying their stoichiometry, while positive tuning can be realized by photoirradiation. After deexcitation, negative Cotton effect tuning occurs again spontaneously in some cases. Such supramolecular chirality tuning is accompanied by rheological property tuning, demonstrating that our strategy can overcome polymer chain entanglement limitations. The proposed strategy inspires further works on the precise control of polymer chirality and, hence, development of asymmetric materials with changeable optical activity and modulus.
Pathway-Dependent Self-Assembly for Control over Helical Nanostructures and Topochemical Photopolymerization

Abstract:Pathway-dependent self-assembly, in which a single building block forms two or more types of self-assembled nanostructures, is an important topic due to its mimic to the complexity in biology and manipulation of diverse supramolecular materials. Here, we report a pathway-dependent self-assembly using chiral glutamide derivatives (L or D-PAG), which form chiral nanotwist and nanotube through a cooperative slow cooling and an isodesmic fast cooling process, respectively. Furthermore, pathway-dependent self-assembly can be harnessed to control over the supramolecular co-assembly of PAG with a luminophore β-DCS or a photopolymerizable PCDA. Fast cooling leads to the co-assembled PAG/β-DCS nanotube exhibiting green circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), while slow cooling to nanofiber with blue CPL. Additionally, fast cooling process promotes the photopolymerization of PCDA into a red chiral polymer, whereas slow cooling inhibits the polymerization. This work not only demonstrates the pathway-dependent control over structural characteristics but also highlights the diverse functions emerged from the different assemblies.

Abstract:A carbazole end-capped rod amphiphile was synthesized and observed to self-assemble into non-chiral fibers in both methanol and water solutions even though the molecule contains a chiral oligoether dendron. Remarkably, a mixture of water and methanol induces supramolecular chirality of the nanofibers caused by a conformational change of hydrophobic aromatic rods and reduction in the hydrodynamic volume of the ethylene oxide chains. The helicity induction of the nanofibers also takes place by heating the water solution. Furthermore, the helical fibers in aqueous solution were observed to further aggregate into a rigid gel at higher temperature by enhanced hydrophobic interactions between the dehydrated oligo(ethylene oxide) dendrons.

Abstract:The widespread presence of hierarchical asymmetric structures in nature has sparked considerable interest because of their unique functionalities. These ingenious structures across multiple scales often emerge from the transfer and amplification of asymmetry from chiral molecules under various synergistic effects. However, constructing artificial chiral asymmetric structures, particularly in developing hierarchical multicomponent structures analogous to those formed in nature through synergistic non-covalent interactions, still presents tremendous challenges. Herein, we propose a co-assembly strategy to fabricate hierarchical chiral mesostructures by combining a liquid crystalline block copolymer (LC-BCP) with a small molecular amphiphile containing chiral alanine or phenylalanine as a linker. Through a classic solvent-exchange process, chiral amphiphiles embedded within LC-BCP finely regulate the LC ordering effect and facilitate transfer and amplification of asymmetry. Consequently, various co-assembled structures with significant hierarchical chirality features are obtained through synergetic effects. Remarkably, subtle alterations to the side groups of amino acids in the amphiphiles effectively adjust the hierarchical morphology transition. Moreover, the covalent bonding sequence of amino acids in the amphiphiles emerges as a critical factor governing the formation of hierarchical nanofibers and multilayered vesicles exhibiting a superhelical sense.

Abstract:Intimately connected to the rule of life, chirality remains a long-time fascination in biology, chemistry, physics and materials science. Chiral structures, e.g., nucleic acid and cholesteric phase developed from chiral molecules are common in nature and synthetic soft materials. While it was recently discovered that achiral but bent core mesogens can also form chiral helices, the assembly of chiral microstructures from achiral polymers has rarely been explored. Here, we reveal chiral emergence from achiral conjugated polymers for the first time, in which hierarchical helical structures are developed through a multistep assembly pathway. Upon increasing concentration beyond a threshold volume fraction, pre-aggregated polymer nanofibers form lyotropic liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases with complex, chiral morphologies. Combining imaging, X-ray and spectroscopy techniques with molecular simulations, we demonstrate that this structural evolution arises from torsional polymer molecules which induce multiscale helical assembly, progressing from nano- to micron scale helical structures as the solution concentration increases. This study unveils a previously unknown complex state of matter for conjugated polymers that can pave way to a new field of chiral (opto)electronics. We anticipate that hierarchical chiral helical structures can profoundly impact how conjugated polymers interact with light, transport charges, and transduce signals from biomolecular interactions and even give rise to properties unimagined before.

Folding of Coordination Polymers into Double-Stranded Helical Organization.

Abstract:Self-assembling coordination polymers based on Pd II and Cu II metal ions were prepared from complexation of a bent-shaped bispyridine ligand and a corresponding transition metal. These coordination polymers were observed to self-assemble into supramolecular structures that differ significantly depending on the coordination geometry of the metal center. The polymer based on Pd II self-assembles into a layer structure formed by bridging bispyridine ligands connected in a trans-position of the square-planar coordination geometry of metal center. In contrast, the polymer based on Cu II adopts a double-helical conformation with regular grooves, driven by interstranded, copper-chloride dimeric interaction. The double-stranded helical organization is further confirmed by structure optimization from density functional theory with aromatic framework, showing that the optimized double-helical structure is energetically favorable and consistent with the experimental results. These results demonstrate that weak metal-ligand bridging interactions can provide a useful strategy to construct stable double-stranded helical nanotubes.

Abstract:Building well-defined hierarchical architectures via supramolecular chemistry is one of the challenges in nanotechnology and is crucial to our understanding of biological self-assembly and biological phenomenon. In this work, a well-ordered one-dimensional (1 D) helix is fabricated with a novel sugar-based lipid by virtue of multiple non-covalent interactions (i.e. hydrophobic interaction, aromatic stacking, and hydrogen bond). The robust helical nanostructure is evidenced by negative-staining TEM, cryo-TEM and circular dichroism (CD). A series of amphiphilic molecules are also synthesized to explore molecular structure-performance relationship and elucidate intermolecular forces that contribute to complex architectures. Moreover, the supramolecular nanohelices in this work are demonstrated to be "smart nanostructures" which can be shaped into spherical micelles, vesicles or unfolded nanofibers by external stimuli, such as pH, light, and surfactant addition.
Supramolecular assembly of dendronized diacetylenes into thermoresponsive chiral fibers and their covalent fixation through topochemical polymerization

Abstract:By combination of dendritic topological structures with photopolymerizable diacetylene, here we report on supramolecular chiral assembly of the dendronized diacetylenes in water. These dendronized diacetylenes are constituted with three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs), bridged with a dipeptide from phenylalanine and glycine. These dendronized amphiphiles exhibit intensive propensity to aggregate in water and form helical fibers, which show characteristic thermoresponsive behavior with phase transition temperatures dominated by hydrophilicity of the dendritic OEGs. Topochemical polymerization of these supramolecular fibers through UV irradiation transfers them into the covalent helical dendronized polydiacetylenes. Chirality of these dendronized polydiacetylenes can be mediated through the thermally-induced phase transitions, but is also intriguingly dependent on vortex via stirring. Through stirring the solutions, chiralities of the dendronized polydiacetylenes are inverted, which can be reversibly recovered after keeping still the solution. Hydrogels are formed from these dendronized diacetylenes through concentration-enhanced interactions between the supramolecular fibers. Their mechanical properties can be greatly increased through thermally-enhanced interactions between the fibers with storage moduli increased from 20Pa to a few hundred Pa. In addition, through photo-polymerization, the supramolecular fibers are transferred into covalent dendronized polydiacetylenes, and the corresponding hydrogels show much improved mechanical properties with storage moduli about 10 kPa.

Abstract:Chiral dendrimers are ideal building blocks for assembled functional materials as their versatility and diverse assembly behaviors, however the assembled nanostructures still hardly be accurately predicted and flexibly controlled. Here, we reported a controllable fantastic supramolecular self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) based chiral dendrimer ( L -POSS), which could assemble into helical nano-fibers, nano-toroids and loofah-like superstructures as the regulated transfer and expression of chirality by solvents. Interestingly, the unique loofah-like network is constructed from the junction and loop of the helical nano-fibers as the advanced expressions of chirality, which have been proved by a designed disassembly process and a co-assembly with enantiomer D -POSS. After co-assembly with D -POSS, the transfer of chirality from dendrimer could be easily regulated by enantiomers with performed loofah-like structure or helical fibers disappeared and were replaced by the non-chiral nano-fibers as the assembly in a racemic state ( L -POSS and D -POSS are in equimolar). These new insights into the transfer and expression of the chirality from chiral dendrimers could inspire the design, regulation and application of chiral architectures by taking advantage of the controllable multifarious self-assembly from dendritic building blocks.

Herein, we reported diversiform shape transformation of multi-responsive polymer filaments, which were self-assembled by a new kind of amphiphilic block copolymer (PVEG-PVEA) possessing dynamic and reversible acylhydrazone bonds through reacting benzaldehyde-containing block copolymers poly(vinylbenzaldehyde)-b-poly(N-(4-vinylbenzyl)-N,N-diethylamine) (PVBA-PVEA) with acylhydrazine-modified oligoethylene glycol. It was found that the resulting amphiphilic and dynamic PVEG-PVEA was capable of hierarchically self-assembling into intriguing core-branched filaments in aqueous solution. Notably, the features of acylhydrazone bonds and PVEA block endow the filaments with multi-responsiveness including acid, base, and temperature, leading to the multiple morphological transformations under such stimuli. Moreover, the core-branched filaments would further transform into polymeric braided bundles driven by hydrogen-bonding interactions of amide bonds. It is noteworthy that both core-branched filaments and braided bundles made from polymers are quite rare. These diversiform polymeric assemblies and their morphological evolution were characterized by TEM, Cryo-TEM, SEM, and DLS. Finally, we used PVBA-PVEA as a platform to facilely prepare functional polymers, such as glycopolymers via the reaction of amino-containing sugars and aldehyde groups. The obtained glycopolymers self-assembled into glycofibers for the biomimicry of glycans via binding with lectins. These findings not only are conducive to understanding of the stimulated shape change process of dynamic polymeric assemblies in water but also provide a new method for the facile fabrication of smart and functional polymeric assemblies for different potential applications, such as biomimicry and targeted drug nanocarriers or delivery vehicles.
