Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between Fas receptor and its ligand (FasL) on T cells and the oncogenesis and progression of elderly patients with primary non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods The expression of Fas and FasL on T cells in peripheral blood obtained from 63 elderly patients with NSCLC aged ≥ 60 years were measured by five-color fluorescent flow cytometry. 35 elderly patients with lung benign lesion, 30 elderly healthy volunteers and 30 young healthy volunteers were enrolled as controls. Meanwhile, the relationship between Fas/FasL and clinical characteristics of NSCLC was analyzed. Results The expressions of Fas (P<0.01) and FasL (P<0.01) on T cells in peripheral blood of elderly healthy donors were significantly higher than those in young healthy donors, but there were no significant differences between elderly healthy donors and elderly patients with lung benign lesion. The expression of Fas in elderly patients with NSCLC was significantly higher than that in elderly healthy controls and elderly patients with lung benign lesion (P<0.01), but there were no significant differences in expression of FasL among elderly patients with NSCLC, elderly patients with lung benign lesion and elderly healthy controls. In the elderly patients with NSCLC, the expression of Fas on T cells was closely associated with TNM stages, grade of cell differentiation and lymph node metastasis status (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but not related to pathological types. Conclusions The up-regulation of Fas with age on T cells in peripheral blood plays an important role in the oncogenesis and progression of the elderly patients with the primary NSCLC.
