Abstract:It has been shown recently that, under some generic assumptions, there exists a Hopf curve /spl lambda/ = /spl lambda/ (/spl epsiv/) for singularly perturbed systems of the form x/spl dot/ = f (x, y, /spl lambda/), /spl epsiv/y/spl dot/ = g(x, y, /spl lambda/) near the singular surface defined by det g/sub v/ = 0. In this note, we are concerned with the Hopf curve and obtain three results: 1) we prove that the eigenvalue crossing condition for the Hopf curve holds without additional assumption; 2) we provide an improved form of an existing derivative formula for the Hopf curve which is more suitable for practical computations; and 3) we give a quite precise description of the spectrum structure of the linearization along the Hopf curve. All three results (stated in the main theorem) are useful for a better understanding of Hopf bifurcations in singularly perturbed systems. Our analysis is based on a factorization of parameter dependent polynomials (Lemma 2.3).

Abstract:The stochastic Hopf bifurcation of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems with time-delayed feedback control subject to Gaussian white noise excitations is studied. First, the time-delayed feedback control forces are approximately expressed in terms of the system state variables without time delay, and the system is converted into anordinary quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system. The averaged Ito stochastic differential equations are derived by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems. Then, an expression for the average bifurcation parameter of the averaged system is obtained approximately, and a criterion for determining the stochastic Hopf bifurcation caused by the time-delayed feedback control forces in the original system as the value of the average bifurcation parameter changing is proposed. An example is worked out in detail to illustrate the above criterion and its validity, and to show the e ffect of the time delay in the feedback control on the stochastic Hopf bifurcation of the system.

Abstract:A new procedure for analyzing the stochastic Hopf bifurcation of quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian systems is proposed. A quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to an one-dimensional Itô stochastic differential equation for the averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian systems. Then the relationship between the qualitative behavior of the stationary probability density of the averaged Hamiltonian and the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the averaged Hamiltonian near the two boundaries is established. Thus, the stochastic Hopf bifurcation of the original system is determined approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the averaged Hamiltonian near the two boundaries. Two examples are given to illustrate and test the proposed procedure.

Abstract:This paper discusses the on-line control of Hopf bifurcations in multiple-parameter space of loads in power systems. In power systems, the variation process of loads and the control decision-making process are at different time scales. The former is slowly, compared with the latter. So, in general, the loads should not change remarkably during the control decision-making process. Based on the above fact, this paper proposes an on-line method to control Hopf bifurcations in power systems. The method involves the process as follows. Firstly, monitor Hopf bifurcations by computing the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of power systems at the current equilibrium point. If there is a pair of conjugate eigenvalues close to the imaginary axis, then use the pair of conjugate eigenvalues to compute the approximate normal vector to the Hopf bifurcation set. Finally, regulate control parameters to avoid a Hopf bifurcation in multi-machine power systems described by DAEs (differential algebraic equations). The validity of the method is demonstrated by regulating the reactive power loads in a 14-bus power system.
On the stability of singular Hopf bifurcation and its application

Abstract:Recently, research on the complex periodic behavior of multi-scale systems has become increasingly popular. Krupa et al. \cite{krupa2} provided a way to obtain relaxation oscillations in slow-fast systems through singular Hopf bifurcations and canard explosion. The authors derived a $O(1)$ expression $A$ for the first Lyapunov coefficient (under the condition $A \neq 0$), and deduced the bifurcation curves of singular Hopf and canard explosions. This paper employs Blow-up technique, normal form theory, and Lyapunov coefficient formula to present higher-order approximate expressions for the first Lyapunov coefficient when $A=0$ for slow-fast systems. As an application, we investigate the bifurcation phenomena of a predator-prey model with Allee effects. Utilizing the formulas obtained in this paper, we identify both supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations that may occur simultaneously in the system. Numerical simulations validate the results. Finally, by normal form and slow divergence integral theory, we prove the cyclicity of the system is 1.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).

By using some algebraic criteria, the "complete discrimination system for polynomials" and Hurwitz criterion, on-line determining bifurcation's occurrence can be realized. Abstract:We state two sufficient criteria for periodic oscillations in mass action systems. Neither criterion requires a computation of the Hurwitz determinants. Instead, both criteria exploit the linear algebra concepts of $D$-stability and $P$-matrices. The criteria are complementary: the first is based on a stable matrix that is not a $P^-$ matrix, while the second is based on a $P^-$ matrix that is not stable. In analogy, a qualitatively different interpretation follows: the first criterion relates to positive feedback in the network, while the second concerns negative feedback. We present examples that showcase the applicability of both criteria. As a final independent remark, we prove that for the special case of fully-open networks, the capacity for Hopf bifurcation is just equivalent to the capacity for a steady-state with a complex pair of eigenvalues with positive-real part.

On-line Hopf Bifurcation Control in Multi-machine Power Systems

Abstract:This paper discusses the Hopf bifurcation control problems in a multi-parameter space of power systems by taking power loads as parameters.In power systems,the power load's variation and the control decision-making and implementation process,such as capacitor switching,are implemented at different time scales.The former is a quite slow process,and the latter can be implemented in a short time.So,in general,the loads cannot change remarkably during the control decision-making process.Based on the above fact,this paper proposes an on-line method to control Hopf bifurcations in power systems.The principle of the proposed method is:When the equilibrium(or operating)point is closing to the Hopf bifurcation surface,the approximate normal vector of the bifurcation surface corresponding to the current equilibrium point is calculated directly,and then the controlling parameters are regulated according to the approximate normal vector to avoid a Hopf bifurcation in a multi-machine power system.At last,the validity of the method is demonstrated on a numerical example of a 14-bus power system.

Abstract:A simple model described by an autonomous continuous delayed differential equation with one variable, proposed by Uçar, is considered in this paper. We will show that Hopf bifurcations occur in this simple system. The stability of bifurcating periodic solutions and the direction of Hopf bifurcations are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The computation of the normal form as well as its unfolding is a key step to understand the topological structure of a bifurcation. Though a lot of results have been obtained, it still remains unsolved for higher co-dimensional bifurcations. The main purpose of this paper is devoted to the computation of a codimension-3 zero-Hopf–Hopf bifurcation, at which a zero as well as two pairs of pure imaginary eigenvalues can be found from the matrix evaluated at the equilibrium point. Different distributions of eigenvalues are considered, which may behave in a non-semisimple form for 1:1 internal resonance. Based on the combination of center manifold and normal form theory, all the coefficients of normal forms and nonlinear transformations are derived explicitly in terms of parameters of the original vector field, which are obtained via a recursive procedure. Accordingly, a user friendly computer program using a symbolic computation language Maple is developed to compute the coefficients up to an arbitrary order for a specific vector field with zero-Hopf–Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore, universal unfolding parameters are derived in terms of the perturbation of physical parameters, which can be employed to investigate the local behaviors in the neighborhood of the bifurcation point. Here, we emphasize that though different norm forms based on different choices may exist, their topological structures are the same, corresponding to qualitatively equivalent dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, by using Newton and Marclaurin inequalities we obtain some necessary conditions for a polynomial with positive coefficients to be Hurwitz stable, which generalize the recent results obtained in Borobia and Dormido (Linear Algebra Appl. 338 (2001) 67) and the proof of the result in this paper is much shorter than that of in Borobia and Dormido (Linear Algebra Appl. 338 (2001) 67).

Abstract:We seize some new dynamics of a Lorenz-like system: <(x)over dot> = a(y-x), y = dy-xz, z = -bz + fx(2) + gxy, such as for the Hopf bifurcation, the behavior of non-isolated equilibria, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles and homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. In particular, our new discovery is that the system has also two heteroclinic orbits for bg = 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0 other than known bg > 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0, whose proof is completely different from known case. All the theoretical results obtained are also verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:This paper explores the simplest truncated orbital and parametric normal forms of controlled Hopf zero singularities. We assume a quadratic generic condition and complete the remaining results on their simplest truncated orbital and parametric normal forms of Hopf-zero singularities. Different normal form styles are explored for their potential applications in bifurcation control. We obtain their associated universal asymptotic unfolding normal forms. We derive coefficient normal form formulas of the most generic cases and present the relations between the controller coefficients and asymptotic universal unfolding parameters. These play an important role in their potential applications in bifurcation control. Finally, the results are implemented on a controlled Chua circuit system to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Zero-Hopf Bifurcation of Limit Cycles in Certain Differential Systems

Abstract:This paper studies the number of limit cycles that may bifurcate from an equilibrium of an autonomous system of differential equations. The system in question is assumed to be of dimension $n$, have a zero-Hopf equilibrium at the origin, and consist only of homogeneous terms of order $m$. Denote by $H_k(n,m)$ the maximum number of limit cycles of the system that can be detected by using the averaging method of order $k$. We prove that $H_1(n,m)\leq(m-1)\cdot m^{n-2}$ and $H_k(n,m)\leq(km)^{n-1}$ for generic $n\geq3$, $m\geq2$ and $k>1$. The exact numbers of $H_k(n,m)$ or tight bounds on the numbers are determined by computing the mixed volumes of some polynomial systems obtained from the averaged functions. Based on symbolic and algebraic computation, a general and algorithmic approach is proposed to derive sufficient conditions for a given differential system to have a prescribed number of limit cycles. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated by a family of third-order differential equations and by a four-dimensional hyperchaotic differential system.

Abstract:Singular Hopf bifurcation occurs in generic families of vector-fields with two slow variables and one fast variable. Normal forms for this bifurcation depend upon several parameters, and the dynamics displayed by the normal forms is intricate. This paper analyzes a normal form for this bifurcation. It presents extensive diagrams of bifurcations of equilibrium points and periodic orbits that are close to singular Hopf bifurcation. In addition, parameters are determined where there is a tangency between invariant manifolds that are important in the appearance of mixed-mode oscillations in systems near singular Hopf bifurcation. One parameter of the normal form is identified as the primary bifurcation parameter, and the paper presents a catalog of bifurcation sequences that occur as the primary bifurcation parameter is varied. These results are applied to estimate the parameters for the onset of mixed-mode oscillations in a model of chemical oscillations.

Abstract:In this paper we study the nonhomogeneous semilinear fractional Schrodinger equation with critical growth {(-Delta)(s)u + u = u(s)(2)*(-1) + lambda(f(x, u) + h(x)), x is an element of R-N, u is an element of H-s(R-N), u(x) > 0, x is an element of R-N, where s is an element of (0, 1), N > 4s, and lambda > 0 is a parameter, 2*(s) = 2N/N-2s is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent, f and h are some given functions. We show that there exists 0 < lambda* < +infinity such that the problem has exactly two positive solutions if lambda is an element of (0, lambda*), no positive solutions for lambda > lambda*, a unique solution (lambda*,u(lambda*)) if lambda = lambda*, which shows that (lambda*,u(lambda*)) is a turning point in H-S (R-N) for the problem. Our proofs are based on the variational methods and the principle of concentration-compactness.
