Abstract:Phyllachora (Phyllachoraceae, Phyllachorales) species are parasitic fungi with a wide global distribution, causing tar spots on plants. In this study, we describe three newly discovered species: Phyllachora chongzhouensis, Phyllachora neidongensis, and Phyllachora huiliensis from Poaceae in China. These species were characterized using morphological traits and multi-locus phylogeny based on the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) with the intervening 5.8S rRNA gene, the large subunit of the rRNA gene (LSU), and the 18S ribosomal RNA gene (SSU). Three known species of P. chloridis, P. graminis, and P. miscanthi have also been redescribed, because, in reviewing the original references of P. chloridis, P. graminis, and P. miscanthi, these were found to be relatively old and in Chinese or abbreviated. In addition, the illustrations were simple. In molecular identification, the ITS sequence is short, while the ITS, LSU, and SSU are incomplete. Therefore, this study provides new important references for the redescription of three known species and provides further evidence for the identification of new taxa.

Abstract:The genus Phyllachora is the largest genus in the family Phyllachoraceae. Phyllachora species are obligate biotrophic fungi with a tropical distribution. During our field surveys in Yunnan province of China, fifteen graminicolous Phyllachora species were collected. Multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of ITS and LSU together with morphological characteristics, two new species, Phyllachora dendrocalami-membranacei sp. nov. on Dendrocalamus membranaceus and P. dendrocalami-hamiltonii sp. nov. on D. hamiltonii are described and illustrated. Phyllachora dendrocalami-membranacei is characterized by its dump-bell to ellipsoidal to ovoid ascospores (15–25 × 5–11 μm) while P. dendrocalami-hamiltoniicola is distinguished by its dump-bell to ellipsoidal ascospores (15–30 × 8–12 μm).

Abstract:The genus Acrophialophora belongs to the family Chaetomiaceae. With the addition of new species and transferred species from other genera, the genus Acrophialophora has expanded. In this study, eight new species related to Acrophialophora were isolated from soil samples in China. Using muti-locus phylogenetic (ITS, LSU, tub2 and RPB2) analysis combined with morphological characteristics, eight new species (Acrophialophora curvata, A. fujianensis, A. guangdongensis, A. longicatenata, A. minuta, A. multiforma, A. rhombica, and A. yunnanensis) are described. Descriptions, illustrations, and notes of the new species are also provided.

Abstract:Cryptothecia and Myriostigma are important elements of crustose lichen communities in tropical to subtropical forests, but little research has been done on these two genera in China. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic approaches to investigate species diversity of Cryptothecia and Myriostigma from Southern China were carried out in this study. We find five species of Cryptothecia and Myriostigma in our study, including three new species (M. flavescens, M. hainana and M. laxipunctata) and two new records (C. bartlettii and C. inexspectata). In addition, a phylogenetic tree based on mtSSU, RPB2 and nLSU illustrates the placement of the five species and supports the delimitation of the three new taxa. Detailed descriptions of morphological, ecological and chemical characteristics and illustrations are provided for every species. A key to all known Chinese Cryptothecia and Myriostigma species is also provided.

Abstract:Phlomoides is the second largest genus within Lamiaceae subfamily Lamioideae, and China is one of three diversity centers of the genus. In this study, we described and illustrated a new species, Phlomoides cuonaensis, from Cuona City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that P. cuonaensis and two morphologically similar species, P. hamosa and P. longiaristata, form a distinct clade within Phlomoides. Synapomorphies of this small clade are hooked floral bracts and calyx spines. The new species differs from the other two in trichome density and size on the calyx, floral bract, and nutlet, and in the length of the calyx and bract. Micro-morphological features of nutlets of these three species were examined using scanning electron microscopy. In addition, a lectotype for the name Notochaete hamosa (≡ Phlomoides hamosa) was designated.

Abstract:Four species of Solicorynespora were collected on dead branches from tropical or subtropical forests in southern China. The new species S. ligustri on Ligustrum quihoui, S. machili on Machilus chinensis, and S. cryptocaryae on Cryptocarya chinensis are described, illustrated, and compared with closely related taxa. Solicorynespora pseudolmediae is recorded for the first time from China.

Abstract:Phaeoisaria is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and characterized by straight or flexuous, erect, dark brown to black synnemata with parallelly adpressed conidiophores and ellipsoidal to obovoid, solitary, hyaline, aseptate, acrogenous conidia. This study’s phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, and SSU sequence data showed that the eight Xizang Phaeoisaria strains represent at least three phylogenetic species. A new species Phaeoisaria motuoensis, and two new geographical records of P. clematidis and P. sedimenticola from Xizang, China are reported. The taxa are introduced here with descriptions, color photographs, and phylogenetic analyses results and are compared with similar species.

Abstract:In a study of fungi isolated from plant material in Guizhou Province, China, we identified 23 strains of Diaporthales belonging to nine species. These are identified from multigene phylogenetic analyses of ITS, LSU, rpb2, tef1, and tub2 gene sequence data coupled with morphological studies. The fungi include a new genus (Pseudomastigosporella) in Foliocryphiaceae isolated from Acer palmatum and Hypericum patulum, a new species of Chrysofolia isolated from Coriaria nepalensis, and five new species of Diaporthe isolated from Juglans regia, Eucommia ulmoides, and Hypericum patulum. Gnomoniopsis rosae and Coniella quercicola are newly recorded species for China.

Abstract:We collected six "tar spot" disease specimens from various hosts and these were subjected to morpho-phylogenetic studies. In this paper, a new genus, Neophyllachora is introduced to accommodate N. cerradensis, N. myrciae, N. myrciariae, N. subcircinans and N. trucantispora, which are related to Phyllachora species but constitutes an independent strongly supported monophyletic clade within Phyllachoraceae of the Phyllachorales. Three novel Phyllachora species; P. chloridis, P. cynodonticola and P. panicicola on Poaceae are also introduced. Phenotypic comparisons and phylogenetic analysis of partial SSU, LSU and ITS sequence data with homologous taxa, confirm the placement of the novel species in Phyllachoraceae. The family Polystigmataceae is re-established to accommodate Polystigma within the order Xylariales. The asexual morph of Polystigma rubrum was re-collected from Russia and is provided as a reference specimen with a description, illustrations and molecular data. Further studies with multiple gene analysis are recommended to provide a natural and stable classification system for members of Phyllachorales.

Abstract:1 INTRODUCTION Pertusaria is a fairly large genus of Pertusariaceae with around 170 species recognized(Kirk et al.2001).The genus is characterized by the verrucose thallus,and the large spores(often longer than 30μm)with a conspicuously thick wall(more than 2.5μm thick).Both morphology and chemistry are essential for identifying species in this genus(Oshio 1968; Dibben 1980; Archer 1991,1997;Lumbsch et al.1999).Studies of the Chinese Pertusaria have been extensively developed with 45taxa accepted to data(Zhao et al.2004).A considerable portion of these taxa are difficult to be distinguished without chemical data which,however,have been detected for only a handful of species (Yu et al.1999; Zhao et al.2004).

Abstract:Phlomoides bomiensis , a new species in Bomi County, Xizang, China, was described and illustrated. In addition, Phlomoides longidentata , previously only known from Nepal and Bhutan, is newly recorded from Dingri County, Xizang, China. The phylogenetic placement of both species within the genus was analysed using nine plastid DNA markers ( atpB-rbcL , psbA-trnH , rpl16 , rpl32-trnL , rps16 , trnK , trnL-trnF , trnS-trnG , trnT-trnL ). Both species have brown-black trichomes inside the upper corolla lip and nested within the same subclade of Clade II. A diagnostic key to the Phlomoides species belonging to this subclade is provided.

Abstract:The genus Pholetesor Mason from China is revised. Eleven new species are described and illustrated, namely P. acricauda Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. argyresthiae Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. artusisulcus Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. confusus Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. flavigleba Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. flaviparvus Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. lithocolletis Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. lyonetiae Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. spinadensus Liu & Chen, sp. n., P. taiwanensis Liu & Chen, sp. n., and P. teresitergum Liu & Chen, sp. n. Six species are newly recorded in China, namely P. arisba (Nixon, 1973), P. circumscriptus (Nees, 1834), P. laetus (Marshall, 1885), P. maritimus (Wilkinson, 1941), P. salalicus Mason, 1959 and P. viminetorum (Wesmael, 1837). A key to the Chinese species of this genus is provided.

Abstract:We are studying seed and fruit-borne fungi in Thailand and in this paper report on species of Tainosphaeria, Thozetella and Chaetosphaeria from Fabaceae seed pods and decorticated wood, collected in Chiang Mai and Phang-nga provinces. Phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU, ITS and TUB sequence data provides evidence for new species of Thozetella and Chaetosphaeria. These new taxa are introduced and compared with closely related species in these genera. We provide a morphological and illustrated account of Chaetosphaeria panamensis isolated from Pinus twigs as a first record for Thailand.

Abstract:A new hyphomycete species, Solicorynespora lasianthi sp. nov. is described and illustrated from dead branches of Lasianthus chinensis. It is characterized by its monotretic conidiogenous cells producing solitary, ellipsoidal to cylindrical, versicolored and 2-septate conidia. Chaetendophragmia britannica, Corynesporopsis cylindrica, Moorella monocephala are new records for China. These four species are compared and contrasted with similar species.

Abstract:Abstract— Paraphlomis octopus (Lamiaceae), a new species from the limestone area in Guangdong and Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on two nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences revealed that the new species is sister to P. pagantha , and the two species is further sister to P. kwangtungensis . All three species were further embedded within a clade consisting of species with hairy ovaries or nutlets. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from P. kwangtungensis in its acute apex of calyx tooth, from P. pagantha in its strongly reflexed lower corolla lip, and from both species in its inflorescence with peduncle-like stalks, and wider upper corolla lip. Based on extensive field survey, we also found that the type locality of P. kwangtungensis has long been misrecorded as eastern Guangdong in floras. The species is now only known from its actual type locality in Fengwan Town, northern Guangdong. A key to all species with hairy ovaries and nutlets is provided.
