Abstract:Rapid urban expansion may cause a decline in land-use efficiency and result in a series of social and ecological problems. Economic transition has significantly influenced urban land development, and provides a good perspective for analyzing changes in land-use efficiency. This paper primarily discusses the theoretical influence of economic transition on urban land-use efficiency. Using 126 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Zone as examples, we explore the spatial-temporal characteristics of changes in land-use efficiency, and estimate the relationship between land-use efficiency and economic transition with econometric models. The results show that the land-use efficiency of the Yangtze River Economic Zone has generally been improved over time, and presented significant clustering effects around urban agglomerations. Panel data analysis suggests that foreign direct investment in the globalization process and tax burdens, which were further aggravated by the reform of the responsibility and revenue assignment between local and central government, have had a significant negative effect on land-use efficiency. On the contrary, marketization, urbanization, and fiscal expenditure decentralization have exerted significant positive effects. We also found that agglomeration effects and location advantages did play a positive role in improving land-use efficiency, which accounted for the spatial inequality. This paper concludes with policy proposals to improve the intensification and economization level of urban land use.

Abstract:As the core of managing spatial data in GIS, the field of spatial analysis in physical geography becomes broader and broader. In the geospatial data processing, GIS spatial analysis is the theoretic and technical basis for analyzing, simulating, predicting and regulating the spatial processes. The spatio-temporal data models for spatial analysis are the impotent means to analyse a series of regional or global geographical problems in geoscience, which bring new challenges and opportunities to physical geography. Viewing from the definition and application of spatial analysis, the author studies and explains definition and development trend of spatial analysis, and draws the following conclusion:Firstly, modern geography needs more and more spatial analysis technology while the field of spatial analysis in physical geography becomes broader. Secondly, the spatial analysis becomes a major technologic approach in the research of physical geography. The method of processing geospatial data must integrate with spatio-temporal model, data mining, visualization, and the relevance of factor in multidimensional information space. In the near future, the combination of spatial analysis technology and integrative research of physical geography not only widens the field of spatial analysis technology but also drives rapidly the development of Geo-information Sciences. In a word, the combination of spatial analysis and integrative research of physical geography has already been one of the most important trends in the development of both modern physical geography and geo-spatial information sciences.

Driving force of urban growth and regional planning: A case study of China's Guangdong Province

Abstract:Since China's economic reforms began in 1978, rural–urban migration has accelerated urban growth and the consequential need for regional planning. In order to make effective strategic decisions on regional planning, it is essential to identify the determinants that promote or restrain urban growth. Based on the theoretical underpinnings of classical economics, spatial economics and sustainable development, this paper establishes a theoretical model of urban population growth and uses a case study of China's Guangdong Province to test a hypothesis. The driving force of urban population growth is derived from natural and mechanical increases that include original urban size, living environment, industrial agglomeration, and location. Regression results from the case study reveal that during the period 2000–2010, factor of dominant industry significantly and consistently impacted urban growth, whereas the influence of living conditions and location on urban growth varied from year to year. These findings imply that local government pays less attention to residents' livelihood and more to the effect of location on urban growth. The paper concludes by proposing some regional planning policies for sustainable development.

Abstract:Based on a hypothesis of increasing returns of scale and non-perfect competitive market,spatial economics is concerned with the power,forms,and effects of agglomeration,and explains how spatial factors work in resource allocation.China's present domestic researches on spatial economics focus on diversified agglomeration,which consists of industry agglomeration,urban cities and urban crowding as well as integrated regions.Through a study on the spatial distribution of industry agglomeration,researchers analyze the causes of agglomeration formation,especially the roles the opening-up and local protectionism(two special factors in China) play in the said formation,and then the effects the various agglomeration forms bring about.After presenting diversities of the agglomeration's effects,they acknowledge that China's regional differences are inevitable in a certain period of time.Therefore,factor floating and market integration play a decisive role in regional coordination and growth.These conclusions provide a fresh perspective for the further development of the theory concerning China's development and reform,and a new theoretical basis for the formulation of industrial policies and regional policies,while making more space for the development of spatial economics itself.Finally,it is pointed out that the domestic main research orientation in the future will be focused on the theoretic innovation of spatial economics,the development of micro-level mechanism of agglomeration,and the relationships between agglomeration and regional development.

Abstract:With economic development and social progress, geographic information science is playing a more and more important role in tourism development. Many spatial analysis methods have been used in planning and design of scenic development programs. In this paper, the application of geographic information systems is illustratedfrom three perspectives. DEM model, Voronoi diagram and Space syntax are used to help achieve suitable land use, rational scenic spots layout, and traffic systems, with which tourist split-flow may be attainable. This study enriches tourism planning methods, which may make tourism planning more scientific and operable.
Spatial analysis of digital economy and its driving factors: A case study of the Yangtze River Delta City Cluster in China

Abstract:The digital economy (DE) has become a major breakthrough in promoting industrial upgrading and an important engine for high-quality economic growth. However, most studies have neglected the important driving effect of regional economic and social (RES) development on DE. In this paper, we discuss the mechanism of RES development promoting the development of DE, and establish a demand-driven regional DE development model to express the general idea. With the help of spatial analysis toolbox in ArcGIS software, the spatial development characteristics of DE in the Yangtze River Delta City Cluster (YRDCC) is explored. We find the imbalance of spatial development is very significant in YRDCC, no matter at the provincial level or city level. Quantitative analysis reveals that less than 1% likelihood that the imbalanced or clustered pattern of DE development in YRDCC could be the result of random chance. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis with publicly available dataset of YRDCC indicates RES development significantly promotes the development of DE.

Abstract:The chapter provides a historical perspective on recent methodological developments and theoretical insights in the theme of spatial analysis and simulation. The research questions and how they developed are first described. Contributions of different countries to this theme are then assessed in light of bibliometric results, followed by the analysis on the role of NSFC in supporting the research. Five key topics are refined based on the bibliometric result of keywords and reviewed systematically: the geo-ontology, spatial relationship analysis, the spatial estimation, the spatial simulation and the geovisualization. The future direction and dissimilarities between domestic research and overseas are also summarized in the end.

Abstract:Currently the vast regional areas in China are confronted with spatial restructuring and problems aroused by rapid economic development, and uneven development between regions is in desperate need of solution in particular. Base on the annual economic development statistic data in the Yangtze River Delta city group, this paper uses GeoDA and Arcgis to generate thematic map for economic spatial evolution feature analysis of geographic data. The results show that: there has been a significant absolute difference for the economic development of the Yangtze River Delta city group, and this trend is further exacerbated. Meanwhile, the paper makes exploring research on economic space evolution in China from the aspects of global spatial evolution characteristics and local spatial evolution characteristics by using geographic information technology.

Abstract:The economic growth in each region not only depends on its own characteristics, but also on those close to the region. This paper introduces ESDA(Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis) into analyzing regional economic disparities. By means of global and local spatial autocorrelation analyses, this paper then investigates the spatial dynamics of regional disparities at the city level in Yangtze River Delta by analyzing per capita GDP data, 2001-2011. Experiments show that the level of economic development of the cities in the Yangtze River Delta showed strong spatial autocorrelation as a whole spatial pattern, with similar regions gathering in space distribution and the trend is increasing gradually. But the economy disparity of cities far away is still large, especially Shanghai and the cities in southern or northern Jiangsu or southern Zhejiang.

Abstract:Taking 16 cities in Anhui province as research units, based on the research perspective of spatial econometrics, using spatial autocorrelation analysis, this paper investigates the spatial correlation of regional tourism industry in Anhui province, indicating that regional per capita tourism income in Anhui province has obvious positive spatial autocorrelation and relatively obvious local spatial cluster characteristics. To further explore the influence factors of the development level of the regional tourism industry in Anhui and construct the spatial econometric model, the model results show that the Anhui tourism industry development has been accompanied by spatial agglomeration process, per capita GDP, the number of star-rated hotels, fixed assets investment, and employment in the tertiary industry which play a significant role for tourism development. Finally, some countermeasures and suggestions are put forward to promote the development of regional tourism in Anhui province.

Abstract:The issue of regional inequality has attracted much attention of geographers and economists. The in-terdisciplinary research has been reflected in a spatio-temporal hierarchical structure, that is, the multi-scalar nature of economic development and its dynamics. With the advent of the new economic geography, the role of space is emphasized in the field of regional science. Spatial pattern and its dynamics provide a significant pro-spective for understanding regional development in China. Spatial pattern statistics has been adopted to ex-plore the multi-scalar spatial patterns of regional development in China and to investigate the corresponding scaling effect. Especially the forecast of spatial pattern of economic development allows the government to make effective policies. First, the standard ellipse is employed to explore the multi-scalar globe spatial pattern and its dynamics so as to investigate the scaling effect. Second, grey forecast model and Geographic Informa-tion System are utilized to predict and visualize the future spatial pattern in 2020 and 2030. The study area is composed of 2 254 county-level units including city districts/counties/county-level cities (not including Hong-kong, Macao and Taiwan of China), 333 prefecture-level units and 31 provincial-level units. Major results are listed as follows:1) Economic gravity in China is situated in Henan Province from 1997 to 2010, accompanied by a shift towards northwestern China, demonstrating co-developing spatial pattern of the coastal and inland re-gions. It contributes to the effective implementation of western development and rise of central China. Foreign direct investment starts to leave the Zhujiang River Delta and concentrate in Bohai Rim and the Changjiang River Delta. 2) 66%of economic development mainly happens in most eastern and central parts as well as one third of western region. Spatial pattern of economic development shows obvious scaling effect in economic gravity, shape and direction. Overall, the finer the spatial scale, the more southwestern-oriented economic grav-ity is. Its shape of standard ellipse tends to be circled and its direction is by east. 3) It is forecasted that econom-ic gravity will continue to shift northward and slightly towards the east, indicating Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the Changjiang River Delta as the major growth engine for economic development in the future. 4) It has been demonstrated that spatial pattern of regional development has obvious scaling effect. The county level is better to understand the finer spatial structure and spatial laws.

Abstract:This paper took per capita GDP indications at county level to analyze spatial-temporal evolution of regional economic pattern in Anhui Province during 1997—2009,by statistical analysis and ESDA,which could be realized by ArcGIS 9.2 and GeoDA 9.5.It comes to the conclusions from three sides of time series,spatial series and spatial autocorrelation,as follows: The absolute economic disparities at county level had enlarged continually,while the relative disparities showed volatility expansion,overall relevance of economic development was weak,all of these indicated that the spatial interaction of regional development is unapparent.By 2005,radiation effects had been apparent,it revealed the spatial correlation had been enhanced.In the evolution of spatial pattern,the spatial pattern of regional economic development in Anhui Province had gone through a severe reconstruction process,and shown three different spatial patterns,which were the "banded" shape,the "beaded" shape,and the interwoven of "⊥" shape and "U" shape.

Abstract:Since 1990 there has been a renaissance of theoretical and empirical work on the spatial aspects of the economy--that is, where economic activity occurs and why. Using new tools--in particular, modeling techniques developed to analyze industrial organization, international trade, and economic growth--this "new economic geography" has emerged as one of the most exciting areas of contemporary economics. The authors show how seemingly disparate models reflect a few basic themes, and in so doing they develop a common "grammar" for discussing a variety of issues. They show how a common approach that emphasizes the three-way interaction among increasing returns, transportation costs, and the movement of productive factors can be applied to a wide range of issues in urban, regional, and international economics. This book is the first to provide a sound and unified explanation of the existence of large economic agglomerations at various spatial scales.

Abstract:Spatial correlation modeling comprises both spatial autocorrelation and spatial cross-correlation processes. The spatial autocorrelation theory has been well-developed. It is necessary to advance the method of spatial cross-correlation analysis to supplement the autocorrelation analysis. This paper presents a set of models and analytical procedures for spatial cross-correlation analysis. By analogy with Moran's index newly expressed in a spatial quadratic form, a theoretical framework is derived for geographical cross-correlation modeling. First, two sets of spatial cross-correlation coefficients are defined, including a global spatial cross-correlation coefficient and local spatial cross-correlation coefficients. Second, a pair of scatterplots of spatial cross-correlation is proposed, and the plots can be used to visually reveal the causality behind spatial systems. Based on the global cross-correlation coefficient, Pearson's correlation coefficient can be decomposed into two parts: direct correlation (partial correlation) and indirect correlation (spatial cross-correlation). As an example, the methodology is applied to the relationships between China's urbanization and economic development to illustrate how to model spatial cross-correlation phenomena. This study is an introduction to developing the theory of spatial cross-correlation, and future geographical spatial analysis might benefit from these models and indexes.

Abstract:This paper basically reviews the development of regional science and emphasizes the fact that today more and more researchers gradually give up the traditional ideas, begin to treat region as an open, evolutionary, non-linear complex system. The research tendency of regional science has changed from static, equilibrium paradigm to dynamic, evolutionary paradigm, which makes use of sciences of complexity to study and analyze the regional problems and its rules of spatial-temporal evolution. The existence of a vast literature to a certain extent suggests that regional growth as well as its spatial evolution is more complicated than what we had thought. It is indeed the complexity inherent in the regional process that deserves further study. Urban and regional spatial structure can be seen as a cumulative on temporal dimension and agglomeration on spatial dimension which results from numerous interaction and locally decision of adaptive agents (households, enterprises, government and other organizations). Therefore the basic force driving the evolution of spatial structure is inherently microscopic. Our research on spatial complexity should focus on the microscopic mechanism of macroscopic emergence and its simulation. Moreover, this paper also discusses the other primary issues of spatial complexity and potential ways of approaching these problems such as multi-agent model based on the theory of complex adaptive systems.

Abstract:The paper has conducted a research on the county economy in Shanxi Province by the methods of spatial statistical analysis and exploratory regression analysis.The results showed that although regional economic development in the neighboring counties proved spatial agglomeration pattern,but since 2000 the economic agglomeration spatial pattern demonstrated significant transition characteristics and evolution trend was not obvious.This reflects the dynamic mechanism that impacts the economic layout has some structural defects,and it does not promote the coordination of county economy in Shanxi Province.In times of the new and old alternation of China's central region rising planning,for the feedback of the last round planning and the implementation of the new round planning,the research on space layout and the driving force of regional economic has a strongly practical significance.In recent years,a series of major national strategies has included Shanxi Province,then the accumulation of experience of Shanxi Province from the central region rising strategy can be a lesson when it responds to new opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Traditional spatial planning method is difficult to convert all information into useful information, which leads to low local integration and poor spatial planning effect. In view of this problem, a quantitative analysis method of urban spatial morphology structure based on GIS regionalization and spatial syntax is proposed. The application of wireless network communication technology and GIS technology in urban spatial planning is analyzed. According to the framework of WebGIS communication space analysis, the principle and practical application of regional measurement of spatial syntax are analyzed, and the integration and intelligence of spatial syntax morphological variables are realized. The paper combines WebGIS communication technology with spatial syntax and determines the consistency of urban spatial form through the relationship between the overall integration degree of road axis and local integration degree, and completes the quantitative analysis of urban spatial form. The results show that the method has high integration degree of global and local and has ideal remote planning effect.

Abstract:Urban dynamic development has become an important issue to both officials and urban planners in China. As the capital of China, dynamic development of Beijing has been concerned a lot by both government and scholars. Based on geographic Information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS), the authors have analyzed the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of dynamic development of Beijing. The conclusions are as follows: (1) The dynamic development speed has been accelerated in recent years. (2) The dynamic development scale has obvious difference in temporal-spatial distribution. (3) The dynamic development trend can be controlled by means of urban planning.
