Abstract:Cyclodextrin–based porous materials have been widely applied in removing various organic pollutants from water environments, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, like the size–matching effect and hydrophobic interaction. Large numbers of hydroxyl groups in its external structure give cyclodextrin a high solubility in water, but the existence of these hydroxyl groups also endows cyclodextrin with the ability to be chemically modified with various functional groups to reduce its solubility in water and, meanwhile, to develop some novel functionalized cyclodextrin–based porous materials for selective removal of the target organic pollutants. This review focuses on the recent development in the synthesis of cyclodextrin–based porous materials (crosslinked cyclodextrin polymers and immobilized cyclodextrins), as well as highlighting their applications and mechanisms in the removal of dyes, endocrine disruptors, and mixed pollutants from water. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives in related research fields are discussed.

Abstract:For the excellent complex and recognition function,cyclodextrins have attracted wide research interest. In order to utilize these special properties of cyclodextrins more effectively, immobilization of cyclodextrins,with specific orientation,upon solid substrate is necessary in many potential applications. This paper summarizes the common methods to prepare monolayer/multilayers of cyclodextrins on solid substrate,including the Langmuir-Blodgett method,Layer-by-Layer technique,and chemical adsorption. These methods are compared and evaluated. The application situation of these systems is introduced. Finally,based on preparations and applications,the future research directions of cyclodextrins monolayer/multilayers membranes are discussed. Improving routine methods and developing simpler methods will be the key research of this area in the future.
Rapid, Complete Removal Of Organic Pollutants From Water By A Sns2-Modified Porous -Cyclodextrin-Containing Polymer

Abstract:The discharge of organic pollutants poses a serious threat to public health and the environment. Developing new strategies and materials to remove organic pollutants from water efficiently and completely is of great importance. Herein, a SnS2-modified porous -cyclodextrin-containing polymer (SnS2@PCDP), which was derived by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of the hydroxyl groups of both -CD and SnS2-OH by tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, was prepared for the rapid, complete removal of organic pollutants from water . The porous structure and well-defined cavities of -CD endow SnS2@PCDP with a facile and high adsorption capacity, and the modification with SnS2 leads to simultaneous adsorption and photodegradation processes for the rapid and complete removal of organic pollutants. In addition, SnS2@PCDP can be regenerated several times using light irradiation with no loss in performance. Overall, the efficient removal performance and excellent reusability indicate that SnS2@PCDP has potential for practical applications in the efficient treatment of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Many low-polarity persistent organic pollutants(POPs)are readily adsorbed on cyclodextrins due to their unique structure of low-polarity cavities of appropriate size.The POPs from less toxic and more soluble complexes in the adsorbed state and are finally removed by biodegradation.A modified cyclodextrin with higher water solubility is often more cost effective.The cyclodextrins or derivatives are employed to remove some POPs and inorganic pollutants(heavy metals)that may form complexes with the organic pollutants;they will be found in many more environmental control applications for removing pollutants present in air,water and soil media.

Abstract:Remediation of soils contaminated by organic pollutants has become an urgent necessity worldwide. A wide variety of techniques have been developed but many of them are associated with drawbacks (complexity, high costs, environmental risks, etc.). Bioremediation, the use of living organisms to remediate polluted sites, is an alternative approach considered a cost-effective and more environmentally friendly technique, but the low bioavailability of the organic pollutants in soils is its main limitation. Cyclodextrins have been proposed as a ́greeneŕ alternative to organic solvents or synthetic surfactants for increasing organics bioavailability in soils. Cyclodextrins can form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic pollutants increasing their aqueous solubility and enhancing their bioremediation in soils. This review gives an overview on the use of cyclodextrins for this purpose, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages and perspectives of this technology for future research. The effect of those cyclodextrins more commonly used is analyzed, particularly hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) and randomly methylated-β-cyclodextrin (RAMEB), as well as some of the more common contaminants treated (almost 80% are industrial chemicals and the rest are pesticides) and the bioremediation strategies used (by microorganisms and/or phytoremediation). The review also provides a critical view on knowledge gaps and limitations of this technology which must be overcome to bring it for field-scale application.

Abstract:Chemically modified cyclodextrins can remove pollutants from wastewater, cross‐linked cyclodextrin can adsorb pesticides, pharmaceuticals & dyes, mechanisms of contaminant adsorption critically discussed, challenges and future prospects of cyclodextrin based adsorbents outlined. Concern over the harmful impacts of pollutants on human health and the environment has increased in recent decades due to their widespread presence in water resources. These pollutants include pesticides, poisonous textile dyes, and micropollutants. It is essential to remove these pollutants from wastewater to enhance the quality of water for industrial usage. Because of externally hydrophilic and internally hydrophobic qualities, cyclodextrin and its derivatives have shown great promise as adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater. While cyclodextrins cannot be used as adsorbents on their own due to their water solubility, they can be efficiently polymerized with different types of cross‐linkers to increase their stability and effectiveness. This review article examines chemically crosslinked materials based on cyclodextrin and its derivatives, utilizing various cross‐linkers such as epichlorohydrin, glutaraldehyde, citric acid, N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide and maleic anhydride. These materials are evaluated for their effectiveness in adsorbing textile dyes, micropollutants, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides from wastewater. Additionally, this article provides a detailed explanation of adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and kinetic isotherms for the removal of contaminants. It also discusses the mechanism of contaminant adsorption, and reusability of adsorbents. Finally, this study delves into the challenges and exciting future prospects of CD‐based adsorbents, highlighting their potential to revolutionize wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) possess a hydrophilic external surface and a hydrophobic cavity. They are thus highly soluble and, in the meantime, effectively form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic organic compounds to enhance their solubilities. In this study, the complexation between modified beta-CDs and the herbicide diclofop-methyl (DM), (2-(4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-phenoxy) propionate), was investigated. The complexation was confirmed by the shifts in the wavelengths of maximum ultra violet (UV) absorption and fluorescence excitation/emission. The deuterium isotope effects indicate that in the presence of beta-CDs the solubility of DM was lower while that of diclofop was higher in D2O than in H2O, suggesting the primary role of hydrophobic interactions in complexation. The solubility of DM was enhanced in the presence of beta-CDs, the extent of which depended on the modification of beta-CDs. The complexation reduced the hydrolysis of DM and hence increased its stability. The small inconsistency in the power of beta-CDs between hydrolysis retardation and solubilization suggests that hydrolysis was affected by the properties of beta-CDs and the configuration of DM in the complexes. Use of beta-CDs may thus result in the mobilization of soil DM. Properly modified beta-CDs may be utilized as formulation additives for improved delivery of DM and for enhanced environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure and properties of cyclodextrins (CDs) with hydrophilic external and hydrophobic internal cavities are presented. For the special molecular structure of CDs, the characteristics and performances of membranes will be improved by introducing CDs and their derivatives into the membrane. The preparation methods and applications of membranes with CDs are reviewed, including separation of isomers, transfer of metal ions, controlled release of drugs, drug detection and analysis, hydrolyzation of esters etc. The study on molecular conduit of CDs is summarized. Based on these reviews, the prospect of membrane with CDs is discussed.

Abstract:The use of chlorine dioxide to disinfect drinking water and ameliorate toxic components of wastewater has significant advantages in terms of providing safe water. Nonetheless, significant drawbacks toward such usage remain. These drawbacks include the fact that toxic byproducts of the disinfection agents are often formed, and the complete removal of such agents can be challenging. Reported herein is one approach to solving this problem: the use of α-cyclodextrin to affect the product distribution in chlorine dioxide-mediated decomposition of organic pollutants. The presence of α-cyclodextrin leads to markedly more oxidation and less aromatic chlorination, in a manner that is highly dependent on analyte structure and other reaction conditions. Mechanistic hypotheses are advanced to explain the cyclodextrin effect, and the potential for use of α-cyclodextrin for practical wastewater treatment is also discussed.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin played an important role in environmental protection in recent years.Application of cyclodextrins in enviroment science upon aspects;enrichment and removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals from soil,water,and atmosphere. β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) can be linked when it was sulfonation-modified.A convenient method of photocatalytic degradation of pesticide in lab by self-designed photocatalytic equipment was proposed based on analysis and comparison of different methods used to determine pesticide. The effects of illumination,reaction time,and pesticide concentration were analyzed. The results showed that the photodegradation of monocrotophes increased 2.08-2.86 times in the presence of 20g/L and 40g/L sulfonated β-cyclodextrin.In addition,the photodegradation of omethoate increased 1.8-2.2 times in the presence of 40g/L sulfonated β-cyclodextrin. The light activation were caused by the formaton of inclusion complexes of monocrotophes with sulfonated β-cyclodextrin. It was found that the method was simple and paid lower costs; and it could be used in lab for the photo-catalytic degradation of pesticide.

Abstract:In this work, polymers containing a large number of benzene rings and multiple functional groups were designed to remove aromatic organic pollutants. Using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) as a rigid crosslinking agent to crosslink different functionalized phenylcarbamoylated-β-cyclodextrin derivatives to prepare a series of porous multifunctional cyclodextrin (CD) polymerizations, including three preliminary polymerized adsorption materials and a mix β-cyclodextrin polymer (X-CDP) prepared via a secondary crosslinking procedure of the above three materials. The X-CDP preparation process connects the pre-formed nanoparticles and increases the presence of linkers inside the particles. At the same time, X-CDP exhibited porous structure with various functional groups such as nitro, chlorine, fluorine, and hydroxyl. Those special characteristics render this material with good adsorption ability towards various aromatic organic pollutants in water, including tetracycline, ibuprofen, dichlorophenol, norfloxacin, bisphenol A, and naphthol. Especially, the maximum adsorption capacity for tetracycline at equilibrium reached 110.56 mg·g−1, which is competitive with the adsorption capacities of other polysaccharide adsorbents. X-CDP removed organic contaminants much more quickly than other adsorbents, reaching almost ~95% of its equilibrium in only 30 s, and the rate constant reaches 2.32 g·mg−1·min−1. The main adsorption process of the pollutants by X-CDP fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm well, indicating that the adsorption process is monolayer adsorption. Moreover, X-CDP possessed the good reusability where the pollutant removal rate was only reduced 8.3% after five cycles. Such advantages render the polymer great potential in the rapid treatment of organic pollutants in water bodies.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives have recently gained worldwide attention, which have versatile advantages and restrained the defects of parent CDs. The superior properties of CD derivatives in encapsulation, stabilization, and solubilization facilitate their application in food, biomedicine, daily chemicals, and textiles. In this review, the preparation, classification, and main benefits of CD derivatives are systematically introduced. By introducing targeted groups into the parent CD molecule, they exhibit significant improvement in their required characteristic. Besides, the important point closely related to application, the safety assessment, has also been highlighted. Most tested CD derivatives have been verified to be relatively safe in a limited dosage. Then, the applications of CD derivatives have been described in detail from the food to its related field. In food field, CD derivatives play an important role in the stability and bioavailability of bioactive compounds, control flavor release, and improve the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of packaging materials. These advantages can also be expanded to the related field, offering innovative solutions that enhance product quality, human health, and environmental sustainability. This review highlights the broad applications and potential of CD derivatives, underscoring their role in driving advancements across multiple industries.

Abstract:Organic micropollutants in aquatic environment such as plasticizer, pesticide and pharmaceuticals, have posed a serious threat to human health and are emerging as a great challenge to humanity. Traditional water treatment techniques fail to achieve high removal efficiency for low concentration of organic micropollutants. Here we demonstrate a water-insoluble crosslinked beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) polymer able to remove a broad-spectrum of organic micropollutants from water by rapid adsorption. A family of beta-CD polymers (beta-CDPs) were synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of beta-CD hydroxyl groups and 4,4'-difluorodiphenylsulfone. The beta-CDPs were used to adsorb various organic micropollutants in water by static or dynamic adsorption process. It was found that more than 99% micropollutants in water were removed by flowing the feed water through the column of beta-CDPs. The results of static adsorption experiments indicated the adsorption process was fast and the adsorption capacity was very high (the maximal value was 113.0 mg of bisphenol A per gram of beta-CDP). The adsorption process was fitted well with the quasi-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, suggesting that it is mainly a chemical adsorption of monolayer. The water-insoluble characteristic of the beta-CDPs is convenient for their separation from the treated solution after adsorption saturation for regeneration and reuse. The adsorption ability of beta-CDPs was kept nearly unchanged after five filtration-regeneration cycles.
Multifunctional Β-Cyclodextrin Polymer for Simultaneous Removal of Natural Organic Matter and Organic Micropollutants and Detrimental Microorganisms from Water.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM), organic micropollutants (OMPs), and detrimental microorganisms are three major pollutants that affect water quality. To remove these pollutants, a quaternary ammonium-functionalized β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP) is successfully synthesized in the aqueous phase. The N2 and CO2 adsorption/desorption analysis showed that the polymer mainly contains ultra-micropores (<1 nm), with a Langmuir surface area of 89 m2 g-1. Two kinds of NOM, humic acid and fulvic acid, and five OMPs, 2-naphthol (2-NO), 3-phenylphenol (3-PH), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), bisphenol A (BPA), and bisphenol S (BPS), were selected as model pollutants to study the performance of β-CDP and three kinds of commercial adsorbents, including granular activated carbon, DARCO-AC, and two resins, XAD-4 and D-201, were used for comparison. The polymer shows ultrarapid adsorption kinetics for the removal of these pollutants, with pseudo-second-order rate constants two to three orders of magnitude higher than that of the commercial activated carbon and resins. Due to the different adsorption sites of NOM and OMPs, β-CDP can simultaneously remove these pollutants without competitive adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of β-CDP for HA, FA, 2-NO, 3-PH, 2,4,6-TCP, BPA, and BPS based on the Langmuir model is 40, 166, 74, 101, 108, 103, and 117 mg g-1, respectively. After use, the polymer can be easily regenerated at room temperature. In addition, β-CDP also showed excellent bactericidal properties due to the quaternary ammonium groups. At a concentration of 15 g L-1, β-CDP can remove 98% of the tested Escherichia coli. Moreover, the synthesis of β-CDP is simple, green, and easy to industrialize. All of these findings indicate that β-CDP, as an ideal multifunctional material, presents potential for practical applications for water treatment and disinfection.

Abstract:Soil contaminated by total petroleum hydrocarbons is a well-recognized worldwide problem because of its strong persistence in the environment and its potentially toxic effects on human beings, animals and microorganisms. During the past three decades, the research and development of remediation technology for petroleum hydrocarbons-contaminated soil have been systematically studied such as the physical, chemical and bioremediation technologies. To address the associated environmental concerns, innovative remediation technologies are urgently needed. Cyclodextrins are nonhazardous and environmentally acceptable organic substances that have been shown to be biodegradable in soil and water after their introduction into an environmental system. The decontamination technique based in cyclodextrin extraction has been developed to eliminate petroleum hydrocarbons. Cyclodextrins have successfully been used in soil cleaning technologies as solubiliser–carrier molecules. These molecules can transfer continuously the insoluble contaminants from the soil surface to the aqueous phase by complex formation. In the aqueous phase the microorganisms can degrade the contaminants much easier partly because these molecules become available for the microbial cells, partly because the entrapment of contaminants by cyclodextrins reduces their toxicity.

Abstract:Proposed and studied in the mid-1960s, water-insoluble cyclodextrin–epichlorohydrin polymers are of constant interest to the scientific community, particularly for their environmental applications. The unique feature of these materials is their ability to form inclusion complexes with various pollutants through host–guest interactions. This leads to many environmental applications including water and wastewater treatment, soil remediation, air purification and the concentration or elimination of target substances such as cholesterol. In the early 1990s, our group began working on the synthesis of water-insoluble cyclodextrin-based materials, their structural characterization and their application in the removal of pollutants present in wastewater. Here I summarizes the research conducted over the past 30 years by our group on water-insoluble cyclodextrin–epichlorohydrin polymers used as complexing materials to remove pollutants present in aqueous solutions. Our major findings are: (i) the synthesis of a series of water-insoluble materials with different functionalities in the form of gels or beads; (ii) their characterization by innovative solid-state NMR techniques; (iii) the demonstration of their efficiency as adsorbents in wastewater treatment and the explanation of the pollutant removal mechanisms according to the type of material used; (iv) the demonstration of a correlation between the structure of polymers and their adsorption properties; (v) the feasibility of the materials for the removal of pollutants as a tertiary treatment of wastewater in pilot-scale experiments using real effluents; and (vi) the use for the first time of bioassays based on lettuce seed germination to evaluate the usefulness of the process.

Effects of β-Cyclodextrin and Its Derivatives on the Solubility and Hydrolysis of Herbicide Dicolofop-Methyl

Abstract:In this paper, β-CD (CD), CM-β-CD (CMCD),2-HP-β-CD (HPCD),partially methylated β-CD (MCD) and 2-OTS-β-CD (OTS-CD) were chosen to study how they influenced solubility and hydrolysis of the herbicide diclofop-methyl (DM). The used cyclodextrins in the study remarkably improved the solubility of diclofop-methyl except OTS-CD. Particularly, the solubility was increased linearly in MCD or HPCD containing water. The phase solubility curves of diclofop-methyl in cyclodextrins-containing water were ascribed to be A_(L) type (MCD and HPCD), A_(P) type (CMCD), B_(S) type (CD) and A_(N) type (OTS-CD), respectively. Data for the hydrolytical product diclofop and ratio of diclofop to dissolved diclofop-methyl further indicated that the inclusion complexes of diclofop-methyl and some cyclodextrins could both enhance the solubility and stability of the herbicide. Besides, the solubility and hydrolysis of DM were dependent on cyclodextrin concentrations and types.
