Abstract:She et al. (Paper I) assembled a catalog of nearby galaxies observed with the Chandra X-ray observatory, by cross-matching galaxies in the NASA Extragalactic Database within 50 Mpc and the Chandra archive. That sample has enabled searches of low-mass black holes associated with late-type, bulgeless galaxies and studies of the accretion physics related to low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Using a similar approach, here we construct an extended catalog up to 150 Mpc and make a cross-correlation with a catalog of nearby galaxy groups. The new catalog consists of 1964 galaxies, out of which 1692 have a redshift-independent distance, 1557 are listed in the galaxy group catalog with group properties available, and 782 are identified to be X-ray AGN candidates. Compared with the AGN sample in Paper I, the new sample is 2.5 times larger in size (782 versus 314), with ∼80% of the new members having an Eddington ratio less than 10−4. We confirm that the conclusions based on the previous sample remain. With the new sample, we compare AGN fractions between early-type and late-type galaxies, and between central and satellite galaxies in groups, and find no significant difference. This suggests that the secular process is not the dominant mechanism feeding AGNs in the local universe.
Chandra Acis Survey of X-Ray Point Sources in 383 Nearby Galaxies I. the Source Catalog

Abstract:The Chandra data archive after eight years' accumulation is a treasure for various studies, and in this paper we exploit this valuable resource to study the X-ray point source populations in nearby galaxies. By December 14, 2007, 383 galaxies within 40 Mpc with isophotal major axis above 1 arcminute have been observed by 626 public ACIS observations, 60% of which are for the first time analyzed by this survey to study the X-ray point sources. Uniform data analysis procedures are applied to the 626 ACIS observations and lead to the detection of 28099 point sources, which belong to 17599 independent sources. These include 8700 sources observed twice or more and 1000 sources observed 10 times or more, providing us a wealth of data to study the long term variability of these X-ray sources. Cross correlation of these sources with galaxy isophotes led to 8519 sources within the D25 isophotes of 351 galaxies, 3305 sources between the D25 and 2D25 isophotes of 309 galaxies, and additionally 5735 sources outside 2D25 isophotes of galaxies. This survey has produced a uniform catalog, by far the largest, of 11824 X-ray point sources within 2D25 isophotes of 380 galaxies with 71% of them reported for the first time. With a uniform dataset and good statistics, this survey enables future works on various topics, such as X-ray luminosity functions, and multiwavelength identification and classification.

A study of set-sharing analysis via cliques

Abstract:We study the problem of efficient, scalable set-sharing analysis of logic programs. We use the idea of representing sharing information as a pair of abstract substitutions, one of which is a worst-case sharing representation called a clique set, which was previously proposed for the case of inferring pair-sharing. We use the clique-set representation for (1) inferring actual set-sharing information, and (2) analysis within a top-down framework. In particular, we define the abstract functions required by standard top-down analyses, both for sharing alone and also for the case of including freeness in addition to sharing. Our experimental evaluation supports the conclusion that, for inferring set-sharing, as it was the case for inferring pair-sharing, precision losses are limited, while useful efficiency gains are obtained. At the limit, the clique-set representation allowed analyzing some programs that exceeded memory capacity using classical sharing representations.

X-Ray Constraints On The Hot Gas Content Of Early-Type Galaxies In Virgo

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the diffuse hot gas around early-type galaxies (ETGs) residing in the Virgo cluster, based on archival Chandra observations. Our representative sample consists of 79 galaxies with low-to-intermediate stellar masses (M-* approximate to 10(9-11) M-circle dot), a mass range that has not been extensively explored with X-ray observations thus far. We detect diffuse X-ray emission in only eight galaxies and find that in five cases a substantial fraction of the detected emission can be unambiguously attributed to truly diffuse hot gas, based on their spatial distribution and spectral properties. For the individually nondetected galaxies, we constrain their average X-ray emission by performing a stacking analysis, finding a specific X-ray luminosity of L-X/M-* similar to 10(28) erg s(-1) M-circle dot(-1), which is consistent with unresolved stellar populations. The apparent paucity of truly diffuse hot gas in these low- and intermediate-mass ETGs may be the result of efficient ram pressure stripping by the hot intracluster medium. However, we also find no significant diffuse hot gas in a comparison sample of 57 field ETGs of similar stellar masses, for which archival Chandra observations with similar sensitivity are available. This points to the alternative possibility that galactic winds evacuate the hot gas from the inner region of low- and intermediate-mass ETGs, regardless of the galactic environment. Nevertheless, we do find strong morphological evidence for ongoing ram pressure stripping in two galaxies (NGC 4417 and NGC 4459). A better understanding of the roles of ram pressure stripping and galactic winds in regulating the hot gas content of ETGs invites sensitive X-ray observations for a large galaxy sample.

Abstract:Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We found the spatial extent of the ISM component was much smaller than that of stars for both galaxies, while the ratios of X-ray to optical blue-band luminosities were rather low but within the general scatter for elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the LMXB component, the ISM is shown to be in pressure balance with the intracluster medium of A1060 at the outer boundary of the ISM. These results imply that the hot gas supplied from stellar mass loss is confined by the external pressure of the intracluster medium, with the thermal conduction likely to be suppressed. The cD galaxy NGC 3311 does not exhibit the extended potential structure which is commonly seen in bright elliptical galaxies, and we discuss the possible evolution history of the very isothermal cluster A1060.

Chandra Detection of X-ray Emission from Ultra-compact Dwarf Galaxies and Extended Star Clusters

Abstract:We have conducted a systematic study of X-ray emission from ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies and extended star clusters (ESCs), based on archival {\sl Chandra} observations. Among a sample of 511 UCDs and ESCs complied from the literature, 17 X-ray counterparts with 0.5-8 keV luminosities above $\sim$$5\times10^{36} {\rm~erg~s^{-1}}$ are identified, which are distributed in eight early-type host galaxies. To facilitate comparison, we also identify X-ray counterparts of 360 globular clusters (GCs) distributed in four of the eight galaxies. The X-ray properties of the UCDs and ESCs are found to be broadly similar to those of the GCs. The incidence rate of X-ray-detected UCDs and ESCs, $(3.3\pm0.8)$\%, while lower than that of the X-ray-detected GCs [($7.0\pm0.4)$\%], is substantially higher than expected from the field populations of external galaxies. A stacking analysis of the individually undetected UCDs/ESCs further reveals significant X-ray signals, which corresponds to an equivalent 0.5-8 keV luminosity of $\sim$$4\times10^{35} {\rm~erg~s^{-1}}$ per source. Taken together, these provide strong evidence that the X-ray emission from UCDs and ESCs is dominated by low-mass X-ray binaries having formed from stellar dynamical interactions, consistent with the stellar populations in these dense systems being predominantly old. For the most massive UCDs, there remains the possibility that a putative central massive black hole gives rise to the observed X-ray emission.

Chandra Survey of Nearby Galaxies: The Catalog

Abstract:We searched the public archive of the Chandra X-ray Observatory as of 2016 March and assembled a sample of 719 galaxies within 50 Mpc with available Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer observations. By crosscorrelation with the optical or near-infrared nuclei of these galaxies, 314 of them are identified to have an X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN). The majority of them are low-luminosity AGNs and are unlikely X-ray binaries based upon their spatial distribution and luminosity functions. The AGN fraction is around 60% for elliptical galaxies and early-type spirals, but drops to roughly 20% for Sc and later types, consistent with previous findings in the optical. However, the X-ray survey is more powerful in finding weak AGNs, especially from regions with active star formation that may mask the optical AGN signature. For example, 31% of the H II nuclei are found to harbor an X-ray AGN. For most objects, a single power-law model subject to interstellar absorption is adequate to fit the spectrum, and the typical photon index is found to be around 1.8. For galaxies with a non-detection, their stacked Chandra image shows an X-ray excess with a luminosity of a few times 1037. erg. s(-1) on average around the nuclear region, possibly composed of faint X-ray binaries. This paper reports on the technique and results of the survey; in-depth analysis and discussion of the results will be reported in forthcoming papers.
Chandra Observations of NGC4342, an Optically Faint, X-ray Gas-Rich Early-Type Galaxy

Abstract:Chandra x-ray observations of NGC 4342, a low-stellar mass (M-K = -22.79 mag) early-type galaxy, show luminous, diffuse x-ray emission originating from hot gas with temperature of kT similar to 0.6 keV. The observed 0.5-2 keV band luminosity of the diffuse x-ray emission within the D-25 ellipse is L0.5-2 (keV) = 2.7 x 10(39) erg s(-1). The hot gas has a significantly broader distribution than the stellar light, and shows strong hydrodynamic disturbances with a sharp surface brightness edge to the northeast and a trailing tail. We identify the edge as a cold front and conclude that the distorted morphology of the hot gas is produced by ram pressure as NGC 4342 moves through external gas. From the thermal pressure ratios inside and outside the cold front, we estimate the velocity of NGC 4342 and find that it moves supersonically (M similar to 2.6) toward the northeast. Outside the optical extent of the galaxy, we detect similar to 17 bright (L0.5-8 (keV) greater than or similar to 3 x 10(37) erg s(-1)) excess x-ray point sources. The excess sources are presumably LMXBs located in metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) in the extended dark matter halo of NGC 4342. Based on the number of excess sources and the average frequency of bright LMXBs in GCs, we estimate that NGC 4342 may host roughly 850-1700 GCs. In good agreement with this, optical observations hint that NGC 4342 may harbor 1200 +/- 500 GCs. This number corresponds to a GC specific frequency of S-N = 19.9 +/- 8.3, which is among the largest values observed in full-size galaxies.
Chandra Observation of a Group of Galaxies HCG 80: Does the Spiral-Only Group Have Hot Intragroup Gas?

Abstract:We present an analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of a compact group of galaxies, HCG 80 (z=0.03). The system is a spiral-only group composed of four late-type galaxies, and has a high-velocity dispersion of 309 km/s. With high-sensitivity Chandra observations, we searched for diffuse X-ray emission from the intragroup medium (IGM); however, no significant emission was detected. We place a severe upper limit on the luminosity of the diffuse gas as LX < 6e40 erg/s. On the other hand, significant emission from three of the four members were detected. In particular, we discovered huge halo emission from HCG 80a that extends on a scale of ~30 kpc perpendicular to the galactic disk, whose X-ray temperature and luminosity were measured to be ~0.6 keV and ~4e40 erg/s in the 0.5-2 keV band, respectively. It is most likely to be an outflow powered by intense starburst activity. Based on the results, we discuss possible reasons for the absence of diffuse X-ray emission in the HCG 80 group, suggesting that the system is subject to galaxy interactions, and is possibly at an early stage of IGM evolution.

Spectral study of X-ray sources in some galaxies recently observed by Chandra

Abstract:With the aim to study the spectral properties of some X-ray sources from recently observed Chandra data, 9 galaxies which have been observed by Chandra ACIS-S during the year 2018 to 2022 have been considered for the present work. 27 sources with net source counts ≥100$$ \ge 100$$ have been considered. The spectra of all the sources were fitted using two empirical models-an absorbed powerlaw and an absorbed disk blackbody. Based on their estimated bolometric luminosities, the 27 X-ray sources have been classified into 6 X-ray binaries (XRBs) and 21 Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). All the six XRBs are found to be in the spectrally hard state (Γ∼1.52-2.29$$\Gamma \sim 1.52-2.29$$) which indeed may be due to thermal comptonization. Only one ULX-CXOUJ032251.2-370950 (X-5) was found to be spectrally soft while the remaining 20 ULXs were spectrally hard. The spectral parameters of X-5 with an inner disk temperature (kTin$$_\textrm{in}$$) ∼$$\sim $$ 0.5 keV and an estimated bolometric luminosity, LX∼3.26×1039$$_X \sim 3.26 \times 10^{39}$$ erg s-1$$^{-1} $$ requires a black hole of mass, MBH∼137.86-47.41+66.62M⊙$$ M_\textrm{BH} \sim 137.86^{+66.62}_{-47.41} M_\odot $$ accreting at ∼0.19$$ \sim 0.19 $$ times its Eddington limit. 8 ULXs-X-4, X-8, X-9, X-10, X-11, X-12, X-20 and X-21 were found to be in the Extremely luminous X-ray sources (ELXs) regime with even their lower limit of luminosity >1040$$> 10^{40}$$ erg s-1$$^{-1}$$. Softening/Hardening of spectra with or without changes in the luminosity were also observed in some ULXs/ELXs. In the hard ELX, X-8, spectral softening with almost consistent luminosity was observed. While in the ULXs-X-20 and X-25 spectral softening with increasing luminosity was observed. However, spectral hardening with increase in luminosity were observed in the ULXs-X-21 and X-26.

Abstract:Mechanisms regulating the origin of X-rays in YSOs and the correlation with their evolutionary stage are under debate. Studies of the X-ray properties in young clusters allow to understand these mechanisms. One ideal target for this analysis is the Eagle Nebula (M16), with its central cluster NGC6611. At 1750 pc from the Sun, it harbors 93 OB stars, together with a population of low-mass stars from embedded protostars to disk-less Class III objects, with age <= 3Myrs. We study an archival 78 ksec Chandra/ACIS-I observation of NGC6611, and two new 80ksec observations of the outer region of M16, one centered on the Column V, and one on a region of the molecular cloud with ongoing star-formation. We detect 1755 point sources, with 1183 candidate cluster members (219 disk-bearing and 964 disk-less). We study the global X-ray properties of M16 and compare them with those of the Orion Nebula Cluster. We also compare the level of X-ray emission of Class II and Class III stars, and analyze the X-ray spectral properties of OB stars. Our study supports the lower level of X-ray activity for the disk-bearing stars with respect to the disk-less members. The X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) of M16 is similar to that of Orion, supporting the universality of the XLF in young clusters. 85% of the O stars of NGC6611 have been detected in X-rays. With only one possible exception, they show soft spectra with no hard component, indicating that mechanisms for the production of hard X-ray emission in O stars are not operating in NGC 6611.

Abstract:We report the detailed analysis of the X-ray properties of the discrete sources detected in a long (72 ks) \chandra ACIS-S observation of the Antennae galaxies. We detect 49 sources, down to a detection limit of ~ 10^{38} erg\s; 18 sources have Lx >10^{39} erg\s (Ultra Luminous X-ray sources; ULXs). Six of the 49 sources have an extended component. Two sources show evidence for variability during this observation, and three sources exhibit long term variability in timescales of a few years. The spectra of the discrete sources are diverse, suggesting different emission mechanisms, broadly correlated with the source luminosity: the most luminous sources exhibit harder emission, while the spectra of fainter sources appear softer. Spectra and variability suggest that the ULXs may be binary accretion sources; Supernova remnants or hot ISM in the Chandra beam may be responsible for some of the softer sources.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Isolated galaxies are the ideal reference sample to study the galaxy structure minimizing potential environmental effects. We selected a complete sample of 14 nearby, late-type, highly inclined (i ≥ 80°), isolated galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG) which offers a vertical view of their disc structure. We aim to study extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas (eDIG) by comparing the old and young disc components traced by near-infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) imaging with the Hα emission structure. We obtained Hα monochromatic maps from the Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometry, while the old and young discs structures are obtained from the photometric analysis of the 2MASS Ks band, and GALEX NUV and FUV images, thereby identifying the stellar disc and whether the eDIG is present. The Hα morphology is peculiar in CIG 71, CIG 183, and CIG 593 showing clear asymmetries. In general, geometric parameters (isophotal position angle, peak light distribution, and inclination) measured from Hα, UV, and NIR show minimal differences (e.g. Δi ≤ ±10°), suggesting that interaction does not play a significant role in shaping the morphology, as expected in isolated galaxies. From Hα maps, the eDIG was detected vertically in 11 out of 14 galaxies. Although the fraction of eDIG is high, the comparison between our sample and a generic sample of inclined spirals suggests that the phenomenon is uncorrelated to the galaxy environment. As suggested by the extraplanar UV emission found in 13 out of 14 galaxies the star formation extends well beyond the disc defined by the Hα map.

Seyfert Galaxies and the Hard X-ray Background: Artificial Chandra Observations of z = 0.3 Active Galaxies

Abstract:Deep X-ray surveys have resolved much of the X-ray background radiation below 2 keV into discrete sources, but the background above 8 keV remains largely unresolved. The obscured (type 2) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) that are expected to dominate the hard X-ray background have not yet been detected in sufficient numbers to account for the observed background flux. However, deep X-ray surveys have revealed large numbers of faint quiescent and starburst galaxies at moderate redshifts. In hopes of recovering the missing AGN population, it has been suggested that the defining optical spectral features of low-luminosity Seyfert nuclei at large distances may be overwhelmed by their host galaxies, causing them to appear optically quiescent in deep surveys. We test this possibility by artificially redshifting a sample of 23 nearby, well-studied active galaxies to z = 0.3, testing them for X-ray AGN signatures and comparing them to the objects detected in deep X-ray surveys. We find that these redshifted galaxies have properties consistent with the deep field ``normal'' and ``optically bright, X-ray faint'' (OBXF) galaxy populations, supporting the hypothesis that the numbers of AGNs in deep X-ray surveys are being underestimated, and suggesting that OBXFs should not be ruled out as candidate AGN hosts that could contribute to the hard X-ray background source population.

Extraplanar emission in isolated edge-on late-type galaxies. I. The H$α$ distribution versus to the old and young stellar discs

Abstract:Isolated galaxies are the ideal reference sample to study the galaxy structure minimising potential environmental effects. We selected a complete sample of 14 nearby, late-type, highly inclined ($i\geq80^{\circ}$), isolated galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG) which offers a vertical view of their disc structure. We aim to study extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas (eDIG) by comparing the old and young disc components traced by near-infrared (NIR) and Ultraviolet (UV) imaging with the H$\alpha$ emission structure. We obtained H$\alpha$ monochromatic maps from the Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry, while the old and young discs structures are obtained from the photometric analysis of the 2MASS K$_{s}$-band, and GALEX NUV and FUV images, thereby identifying the stellar disc and whether the eDIG is present. The H$\alpha$ morphology is peculiar in CIG 71, CIG 183, CIG 593 showing clear asymmetries. In general, geometric parameters (isophotal position angle, peak light distribution, inclination) measured from H$\alpha$, UV and NIR show minimal differences (e.g. $\Delta i\leq\pm$10$^{\circ}$), suggesting that interaction does not play a significant role in shaping the morphology, as expected in isolated galaxies. From H$\alpha$ maps, the eDIG was detected vertically in 11 out of 14 galaxies. Although the fraction of eDIG is high, the comparison between our sample and a generic sample of inclined spirals suggests that the phenomenon is uncorrelated to the galaxy environment. As suggested by the extraplanar UV emission found in 13 out of 14 galaxies the star formation extends well beyond the disc defined by the H$\alpha$ map.

Abstract:(abridged) We present a comprehensive comparison of the X-ray properties of a sample of eight dwarf starburst galaxies observed with Chandra (I Zw 18, VII Zw 403, NGC 1569, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 5253, He 2-10). In Paper I we presented in detail the data reduction and analysis of the individual galaxies. For the unresolved X-ray sources we find the following: point sources are in general located close to bright HII regions, rims of superbubbles, or young stellar clusters. The number of X-ray point sources appears to be a function of the current star formation rate and the blue luminosity of the hosts. Ultraluminous X-ray sources are only found in those dwarf galaxies which are currently interacting. The power law index of the combined cumulative X-ray point source luminosity function is alpha=0.24+/-0.06, shallower than that of more massive starburst galaxies (alpha=0.4-0.8) and of non-starburst galaxies (alpha~1.2). For those galaxies showing extended X-ray emission (6 out of the 8 galaxies), we derive the following: Superwinds develop along the steepest gradient of the HI distribution with volume densities of 0.02-0.06 cm^-3, pressures of 1-3x10^5 K cm^-3, thermal energies of 2-30x10^54 erg, and hot gas masses of 2-20x10^6 Mo (~1 per cent of the HI masses). The mechanical luminosities of the developing superwinds are energetic enough to overcome the gravitational potentials of their host galaxies. This scenario is supported by the overpressures of the hot gas compared to the ambient ISM. Extended HI envelopes such as tidal tails, however, may delay outflows on timescales exceeding those of the cooling time of the hot gas.
