Scientism and Humanism:Divergence and Combination in the Methodologies of Management Studies

Abstract:The methodology of management research is divided into two school, scientism and humanism. Scientism holds that the methodology of natural science research can be completely employed in management research to reveal universal laws based on empirical facts. However, humanism is concerned more with achieving a deeply understanding of object researched than with pursuing laws beyond specific context. Scientism disputes with humanism on positivist and interpretive methodologies, for they are rooted in different ontological assumptions and epistemological foundations. However, the essential values of scientism and humanism are interwoven in management activities, management studies and methodology, which results in an integration of humanism and scientism in the methodology of management studies.
