Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

These results demonstrated superior performance of ionic liquids in synthesizing aerogels, nanocomposite materials, and liquid membranes. We expect that these new materials may find applications in areas such as separation, catalysis, and sensors.

Abstract:Alkylation of naphthalene, alpha-methylnaphthalene, and ss-methylnaphthalene with different alkylating agents, such as olefins, bromoalkane, and fatty alcohol, in novel environmentally friendly ambient temperature ionic liquid, ethyl-containing amine chloroaluminate (anhydrous aluminum chloride mole fraction, X = 0.67-0.75), has been investigated. On the basis of optimal reaction conditions, high conversion of alkylating agent and excellent selectivity for monoalkylated product were obtained. The products and unreacted reactants were easily isolated by extraction with cyclohexane.

Abstract:The applications of ionic liquids in Heck reaction,oxidation,hydroreduction,Friedel-Crafts and halogenation of alcohol were summarized.Using chloroaluminate ionic liquid as catalyst,butylbenzene was synthesized catalytically in 3 minutes under room temperature by the Friedel-Crafts reaction,and the olefin hydrogenation in ionic liquid only needed 6 hours.Ionic liquid could also quicken the reaction speed of oxidation.

Abstract:Solvents comprise two thirds of all industrial emissions. Traditional organic solvents easily reach the atmosphere as they have high vapor pressure and are linked to a host of negative environmental effects including climate change, urban air-quality and human illness. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL), on the other hand, have low vapor pressure and are not flammable or explosive, thereby resulting in fewer environmental burdens and health hazards. However, their life cycle environmental impacts as well as freshwater ecotoxicity implications are poorly understood. RTILs are molten salts that exist as liquids at relatively low temperatures and have unique properties. Ionic liquids consist of a large organic cation and charge-delocalized inorganic or organic anion of smaller size and asymmetric shape. The organic cation can undergo unlimited structural variations through modification of the alkyl groups attached to the side chain of the base cation skeleton and most of these structural variations are feasible, from chemical synthesis point of view, due to the easy nature of preparation of their components. Functionally, ionic liquids can be tuned to impart specific desired properties by switching anions/cations or by incorporating functionalities into the cations/anions. It is estimated that theoretically more than a trillion ionic liquid structures can be formed. Due to their tunable nature, these molten salts have the potential to be used as solvents for variety of applications.

Abstract:Novel Lewis acidic ionic liquids containing thionyl cations and chloroaluminate anions were obtained by one-pot synthesis for the first time. Their acidities were determined by acetonitrile probe on IR spectrography. The ionic liquids were used as catalyst for Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene and 1-dodecene. The turnovers of 1-dodecene were higher than 99%. Monoalkylbenzene selectivity was 98%, while the 2-substituent product selectivity was 45%.

Abstract:Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), considered as designers' solvents, are attracting a great attention because of their possibility to be tailored based on property requirements. The ionic liquids designed and synthesized for carrying out specified task are referred as functionalized ionic liquids, which show great application potential in various processes. The efforts to produce functionalized ionic liquids, characterize them, and evaluate their properties and applications are presented in this thesis. In chapter 1 the recent developments in ionic liquid functionalization are highlighted. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis and characterization of imidazolium salts in which a nitrile group is attached to the alkyl side chain (single-armed as well as double-armed). The nitrile group was chosen as it is a promising donor to transition metals such as palladium and platinum. The physicochemical properties of these new ionic liquids are described and it is shown how the length of the alkyl unit linking the imidazolium ring and the CN group influences the melting point of the ionic liquid. The third chapter describes palladium complexation reactions with the nitrile functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (prepared as described in Chapter 2). Their application in C-C coupling and hydrogenation reactions are described. It will be shown that the palladium complexes serve as precursors to nanoparticle catalyst reservoirs and are very efficiently stabilized by the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids. In chapter 4, the synthesis of a series of nitrile functionalized ionic liquids based on the N-butylnitrile pyridinium cation is reported and their suitability as solvents for palladium-catalyzed biphasic Suzuki and Stille coupling reactions is demonstrated. TEM images reveal that nanoparticles are formed in situ in Stille reactions and show that the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquid exert a superior nanoparticle-stabilizing effect compared to non-functionalized ionic liquids. This allows excellent catalyst lifetimes. In the fifth chapter the synthesis and characterization of a series of ionic liquids incorporating the allyl functionality and some nascent reactions that they undergo, indicating that they are useful precursors to a wide range of other functionalized ionic liquids, will be described. Chapter 6 reports on a concept of dual-functionalized ionic liquids. Specifically imidazolium cations with various functionalities are combined with the nitrile functionalized anion [CH3CH(BF3)CH2CN]-, aiming at reducing the melting point and visocity of ionic liquids. In the final chapter the ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl)-imidazolium chloride, is prepared and polymerized to form a macromolecule that is subsequently used as a transition metal nanoparticle stabilizer. A methodology that enables transition metal nanoparticle transfer between liquid phases, via surface modification of the nanoparticles by anion exchange, is described.

Abstract:Two novel ionic liquids, N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium acetate and N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium trifluoroacetate, were prepared and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, DTA-TG and elemental analysis. The experimental results indicate that the new ionic liquids possess lower melting point and higher electrical conductivity. It is noteworthy that the ionic liquids reported herein are the first member of the ionic liquid family with the Schiff base functional group in the cation.

Abstract:A new series of guanidinium cation-based room temperature ionic liquids(RTILS) was prepared by treating tetraalkylguanidine with an alkylating agent in the presence of an alkaline reagent and a phase transfer catalyst(PTC). Good results were obtained when GPF_6 was used as the reaction medium for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with sodium hypochlorite as the oxidant.

Abstract:Several ionic liquids containing pyrrolidinium-, oxopyrrolidinium-, piperidinium-, morpholinium- and trialkylammonium-based cation are synthesized and their thermal property, refractive index, polarity, electrochemical property, and temperature dependency of dynamic viscosity, density and ionic conductivity are characterized. All tetrafluoroborate-based room temperature ionic liquids studied here have a high ionic conductivity (up to 31.4 mS cm −1 ). These ILs were successfully used as suitable electrolytes for the diffusion coefficient measurement of ferrocene. Absorbance solvatochromic probes Nile red is used to investigate the relative polarity of these ionic liquids and compared them with several organic solvents. The relation of fluidity to conductance is considered in terms of a Walden plot that is shown to provide a useful basis for organizing the applications of solvent media for “green” synthetic reactions.
