Complete oxidation of methane and carbon monoxide on supported palladium and platinum catalysts

Abstract:Palladium and platinum supported by CeO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3 have been prepared by conventional impregnation method. The effect of support on catalytic activity on oxidation of CO and methane has been studied. The activity of the supported Pd catalyst is much higher than that of the supported Pt catalyst. The catalytic activity depends on the nature of the support; the sequence for supported Pd and Pt catalyst being CeO2 > ZrO2 > Al2O3. For both CO and methane oxidation, Pd/CeO2 shows highest activity with a light-off temperature at 45 degrees and 310 degrees C respectively, with no apparent decay. This is mostly due to the superoxide species over CeO2. Pd/ZrO2, PdVAl2O3 and Pt/CeO2 catalysts exhibit apparent deactivation. The heat-stability of Pd/CeO2 is inferior to Pd/Al2O3 catalyst, but the oxidation activity of Pd/CeO2 catalyst for CO and methane is higher than that of Pd/Al2O3 after calcination at 1200 degrees C for 4h.

Abstract:Ce0.5Zr0.5O2-supported palladium catalysts were prepared and used for CO and methane oxidation. The redox behaviour of these catalysts was investigated by using H2-TPR and CO-TPR. The shape and temperature of TPR peaks depend on the nature of reducing agent. Two peaks (α1 and γ) were observed when H2 was used as reducing agent for the fresh catalyst, while three peaks (α′, β′ and γ′) were observed when CO was used as a reducing agent. The addition of a noble metal effectively promotes the reduction of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 support, which is attributed to hydrogen spillover. After re-oxidation treatments, the PdO reduction process splits into two peaks (α1 and α2). On the basis of the catalytic activity and CO-TPR results, the activity of CO oxidation is related to the finely dispersed PdO, while the activity of methane oxidation is related to the large PdO particles.

Abstract:Catalysts consisting of palladium supported on cerium dioxide (Pd/CeO2) were prepared and used for carbon monoxide oxidation in a stoichiometric mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen. Pd/CeO2 exhibits high catalytic activity for the oxidation of CO, showing markedly enhanced catalytic activities due to the combined effect of palladium and cerium dioxide. The Pd/CeO2 catalyst is superior to Pd/ZrO2, Pd/Al2O3, Pd/TiO2, Pd/ZSM-5 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts with regard to the activity under the conditions examined. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD and TPR. The position of the H2-TPR peak shifts to lower temperature with increasing Pd loading from 0.25 to 2.0%. CeO2 inhibits the hydrogen reduction of PdO. CO-TPR measurements have shown the existence of three peaks. The low-temperature peak (α) is due to the Pd hydroxide species. The β peak has been attributed to finely dispersed PdO. The high-temperature peak (γ) has been attributed to crystal phase PdO. Crystal phase PdO is more difficult to reduce by CO than finely dispersed PdO. On the basis of the catalytic activity and CO-TPR results, we conclude α species (Pd hydroxide) mainly contribute to the catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation.

Abstract:NiO-Al 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 oxide catalysts modified with palladium and oxides of rare earth metals (Ce and La) and formed on structured cordierite supports have been studied in the process of methane oxidation at different O 2 /CH 4 ratios. It is shown that methane oxidation proceeds without the formation of CO even at an O 2 /CH 4 ratio of < 2 (in contrast to nickel-containing catalysts) in the presence of cobalt-containing catalysts modified with cerium and lanthanum oxides. The addition of CeO 2 promotes Co 3 O 4 dispersion, increases the number of oxygen vacancies, and prevents agglomeration of the active phase of the catalyst at high temperatures. The modification of Co 3 O 4 -CeO 2 /cordierite with palladium (0.1%) enhances its activity due to increased surface oxygen mobility as a result of the interphase interaction of palladium with cobalt oxides and ceria (according to the TPR-H 2 and XPS data).

Abstract:Pd/CeO2 has attracted great attention owing to its unique activity for methane catalytic oxidation; however, the active sites for CH4 catalytic oxidation still remain elusive, which affects the comprehensive understanding of the catalytic mechanism. In this work, the structures of PdOx nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on octahedrons, cubes, and rods of nanocrystal CeO2 supports were systematically studied by Cs-corrected HRTEM/STEM, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy. Our results indicate that the Pd species on CeO2 supports are morphology-dependent: PdO NPs (Pd2+) on octahedrons, PdOx (x = 1–2) clusters (1–2 nm) on cubes, and dispersed Pd4+ ions on the CeO2 rods. Additionally, the chemical states of Pd can be tuned in oxidizing/reducing atmospheres via interactions between Pd and CeO2. Detailed studies reveal that the Pd2+ species are the active centers for the catalytic oxidation of methane. The activity of Pd0 could be ascribed to Pd2+ produced through the gradual oxidation of Pd0 during the CH4 oxidation. Further, Pd4+ in the CeO2 lattice is inactive for CH4 oxidation. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results suggest that the mechanism of CH4 oxidation reaction on PdOx/CeO2 follows the Mars–van Krevelen mechanism, and adsorbed CO can be produced in CH4 decomposition over Pd2+ in the absence of gas-phase oxygen. Abstract:The ceria-zirconium-modified alumina-supported palladium catalysts are prepared using impregnation method with H2PdCl4 as Pd source, hydrazine hydrate as reducing agent. The physicochemical properties of these catalysts are characterized by BET surface area (BET), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and temperature programmed oxidation (O2-TPO) techniques, and their catalytic activities for the combustion of methane are examined. The results show that the palladium mainly exist in a highly dispersed PdO species on Ce-Zr-rich grains as well as Al2O3-rich grains surfaces, and a stable PdO species due to the strong interaction between PdO and CeO2-ZrO2 on the Ce-Zr/Al2O3 surfaces. The catalytic activity is strongly related to the redox behavior of PdO species highly dispersed on Ce-Zr-rich grains and Al2O3-rich grains surfaces, and the higher the reducibility of the PdO species, the higher the catalytic activity. The presence of Ce-Zr in Pd/Al2O3 catalyst would inhibit the site growth of PdOx particles and decomposition of PdO to Pd0, and the reoxidation property of Pd0 to PdOx is significantly improved, which obviously increases thermal stability and catalytic activity of Pd/Ce-Zr/Al2O3 catalyst for the methane combustion.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of methane partial oxidation was investigated on Pd/CeO2-ZrO2 and Pd/α-Al2O3 catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra, and TG-DTA techniques. The results show that CeO2-ZrO2 support is more advantageous for the catalytic activity and stability of catalysts compared to α-Al2O3. TG-DTA and Raman spectra results indicated that carbon deposited on the catalysts was in the form of graphite, which is the main reason for the deactivation of catalysts after a 24-hour reaction. Moreover, CeO2-ZrO2 had positive effect on inhibiting carbon deposition.
Promote the Efficient Co-Combustion of Toluene & CO in Pt/CeO2 Catalyst: Orientally Adjusting the Oxidized SMSI to Optimize Acid Site and Oxygen Vacancy

Abstract:By effectively controlling the strong metal -support interaction (SMSI), the formation of acid sites and oxygen vacancies (O v ) on the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst was optimized. The efficient co -combustion of toluene and CO on Pt/ CeO 2 -450 was achieved. In the dual -pollutant system, when the conversion rate was 90 %, the corresponding conversion temperatures of toluene and CO were 165 degrees C and 173 degrees C, respectively. With the increase of SMSI, the catalytic activity of Pt/CeO 2 showed a trend of first increase and then decrease. This was proportional to the content of weak acid sites, medium acid sites, and O v generated on their surfaces. Compared with the combustion of a single pollutant, the result displays that toluene and CO had significant competitive adsorption on Pt/CeO 2 . The inhibition of toluene on CO also showed the same trend as the catalytic activity with the increase of SMSI. Under the double inhibition, Pt/CeO 2 exhibited preferential selectivity for toluene combustion. However, the in situ DRIFTS results showed that this competitive adsorption phenomenon did not interfere with the combustion reaction path. The co -combustion of toluene and CO follows independent reaction paths. This work provides valuable insights and ideas for realizing the development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts through SMSI regulation.
Study on the Combustion Behavior of Methane over Ce–Zr-modified Pd/Al2O3 Catalysts

Abstract:The effects of ceria and zirconium additions to alumina-supported palladium catalysts on methane combustion behavior have been investigated. A series of Ce–Zr-modified Al2O3 supports and their supported Pd catalysts are prepared using impregnation method and then characterized by BET, XRD, LR, TEM, XPS techniques. The results show that the addition of Ce–Zr improves the thermal stability of alumina. The thermal stability of alumina increases with increasing the loading of Zr. The methane oxidation activity and thermal stability is found to be dependent on the Ce:Zr ratio over the Pd/CexZr1−x/Al2O3 catalysts. The Pd/Ce0.2Zr0.8/Al2O3 exhibits the highest activity and thermal stability for methane oxidation. The temperatures for the 90% methane conversion are 448 and 455°C for the Pd/Ce0.2Zr0.8/Al2O3 catalysts calcined at 500 and 1100°C, respectively. TEM results show that the particle size of Pd is not the key factor influencing the activity of Pd/Ce0.2Zr0.8/Al2O3 catalyst. An induction period is present during methane combustion reaction for the Pd/Al2O3 and Pd/CexZr1−x/Al2O3 catalysts (calcined at 1100°C), but the lengths of induction period are obviously different and the Pd/Ce0.2Zr0.8/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits the shortest induction period. XPS results show that comparing to Pd/Al2O3 catalyst the addition of Ce–Zr stabilizes Pd in a high oxidation state and enhances the reoxidation of metallic Pd to the active PdO under reaction conditions. Therefore the Pd/CexZr1−x/Al2O3 catalysts compared to Pd/Al2O3 catalysts have higher thermal stability and shorter induction period.

Abstract:Ce4+ doped Ba3WO6 complex oxides were used as catalysts for methane oxidative coupling (MOC), and characterized by XPS and O2-TPD-MS techniques. The results indicate that the ratio of electrophilic oxygen species O- and O2- to lattice oxygen on the surface is crucial for C2 selectivity. By adjusting the relative amount of cations in Ba-W-Ce complex oxides with perovskite superstructure interstitial oxygen species can be created which benefits C2 selectivity by raising the relative amount of (O- + O2-) on the surface.

Abstract:The design and development of efficient catalyst is very important for the removal of air pollutants through catalytic oxidation technology. Here, the Pd/CeO 2 catalysts were synthesized via in-situ thermal pyrolysis of Pd 2+ doped Ce-MOF. The prepared Pd/CeO 2 -NB catalyst exhibits nanobundles structure and highly dispersed Pd species, which shows superior performance in CO oxidation and CH 4 combustion at low temperature (<400 °C). The Raman, XPS, TPR and CO-IR reveal that the Pd/CeO 2 -NB sample has a certain surface concentration of Pd 0 species, and the formed Pd/PdO species boost the generation of oxygen vacancies, facilitating the dissociation of gas oxygen and the diffusion of lattice oxygen. Besides, possible reaction mechanism is also clarified by in-situ DRIFTS spectra, and main surface intermediate species (carbonate and carbon oxygenates) were confirmed. This study paves a way for the design of MOFs-based catalytic materials.

Abstract:The surface species and dispersion of PdO on CeO2, TiO2 and gamma -Al2O3 have been studied by means of XRD, XPS and SEM techniques. The results obtained show that there is a great difference between CeO2 support and other kinds of supports in the crystal phase structure and particle size, which are responsible for CO and CH4 oxidation. The order of catalytic activity for the CH4 oxidation is: PdO/CeO2 > PdO/TiO2 > PdO/gamma-Al2O3 and that for CO oxidation is: PdO/CeO2 > PdO/gamma-Al2O3 > PdO/TiO2. It is interesting to find that the PdO/CeO2 catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity for CO oxidation even at a low temperature of 50 degrees C. Due to strong interaction between ceria and palladium, excellent results are obtained in the oxidation reaction of CO or CH4. The high dispersion of PdO is found to be the main factor for the high catalytic oxidation activity observed.
Penta‐coordinated Al 3+ Stabilized Defect‐Rich Ceria on Al 2 O 3 Supported Palladium Catalysts for Lean Methane Oxidation

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, the strong interaction between metal and support can significantly modulate the electronic properties of the metals and play a crucial role in metal particle dispersion and morphology. Herein , a facile strategy was utilized to fabricate highly dispersive palladium catalysts supported on defective Al 2 O 3 ‐CeO 2 for lean methane oxidation. Ceria was immobilized on the coordinatively unsaturated Al 3+ penta sites of γ‐alumina activated by pre‐reduction to fabricate hybrid‐oxide support (abbreviated as RAl 2 O 3 ‐CeO 2 ), and then Pd precursor was uniformly deposited on the defective surface. Such a RAl 2 O 3 ‐CeO 2 interface can effectively upgrade the dispersion of deposited palladium species and improve the concentration of reactive oxygen species owing to strong electronic interactions, invoking a superior catalytic activity for lean methane oxidation. After loading 1.0 wt% palladium, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 ‐CeO 2 exhibited a 90% methane conversion at 328℃ under the space velocity of 60,000 mL g ‐1 h ‐1 , far lower than that of bare 1.0 wt% Pd/RAl 2 O 3 (400℃). In addition, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 ‐CeO 2 catalyst showed an excellent hydrothermal stability under the harsh conditions (600℃, water vapor) for 120 h without obvious deactivation.

Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO2 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO2 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO2 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects, increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO2 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO2 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO2 2 catalytic system.

Abstract:•Over Pd catalyst supported on La-modified alumina with and without CeO2-ZrO2 dopant, the active sites for CH4 oxidation operated close to stoichiometric λ value were investigated by ex situ XPS.•The oxidation state of Pd was affected by the direction of λ value change, and the CeO2-ZrO2 dopant is beneficial to maintain Pd species in formation of PdO.•Under rich conditions, both metal Pd and PdO can serve as active phase for CH4 oxidation.•However, PdO is the dominant active site under net oxidizing conditions.

Abstract:Palladium supported by Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 has been prepared by an impregnation method, and used for low temperature carbon monoxide oxidation. They were characterized by means of XRD and H2-TPR techniques. For PdO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 catalyst, three reduction peaks (α, β and γ) are observed. The β peak contributes to the reduction of PdO species and Sn4+ species on the surface of Ce0.7Sn0.3O2; β peak to the reduction of bulk SnO2 and surface Ce4+and the γ peak to the reduction of bulk CeO2. The increase of Pd loading from 0 to 0.75% enhances oxidation of CO, further increase of the Pd content affects the catalytic activity but slightly. XRD and TPR results show that highly dispersed Pd on the surface of the support is the active species for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Ce4+ doped Ba3 WO6 complex oxides were used as catalysts for methane oxidative coupling (MOC), and characterized by XPS and O2-TPD-MS techniques. The results indicate that the ratio of electrophilic oxygen species O− and O 2 − to lattice oxygen on the surface is crucial for C2 selectivity. By adjusting the relative amount of cations in Ba-W-Ce complex oxides with perovskite superstructure interstitial oxygen species can be created which benefits C2 selectivity by raising the relative amount of (O− + O 2 − ) on the surface.
