Abstract:Objective To study the association of smoking status and pack-years with premature facial skin wrinkling. Methods A cross-sectional study of 51 nonsmokers, 35 former smokers and 69 current smokers, at an age ranging from 20-69 years was conducted. The data was quantified by self-questionnaire. Facial skin wrinkle category of the Crow's foot area and facial wrinkle score were assessed by standard visual assessment. Computerized image analysis of silicone skin replicas was used in addition to clinical visual measurement. Results Current smokers had significantly higher degree of facial skin wrinkling and wrinkle score than nonsmokers and former smokers. In current smokers, pack-year was positively related with facial skin wrinkling. By the present image analysis, the values of facial skin replicas of current smokers were significantly higher than those of the nonsmokers. Conclusion Cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for the development of premature facial wrinkling.
