Abstract:Clustered wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are becoming a rapidly emerging technological field. Clustering helps create scalable and robust network infrastructure. It enhances the network lifetime while reducing power consumption. However, clustered WSNs suffer from imbalanced load distribution, inadequate cluster head (CH) allocation and uneven energy consumption issues. In case of improper clustering, nodes get prematurely dead due to excessive energy consumption. This adversely influences the network duration and worsen its performance. To overcome these concerns, this paper attempts to improve the clustering quality through optimal cluster head selection and an advanced cluster formation technique. As this paper tackles the clustering issue in WSNs, it introduces a clustering based routing protocol, named ROA-MOCT. This protocol merges the Raccoon optimization algorithm (ROA) along with a new multi-objective optimization technique to enhance the clustering quality. The ROA algorithm performs an accurate search process to select the optimal CH, based on a fitness function that improves clusters segregation. In addition to CHs selection, ROA-MOCT alters the classical cluster formation process and entrusts it to the CHs. Each CH selects its own cluster members based on a multi-objective optimization technique that reduces the intra-cluster distance. The proposed protocol ROA-MOCT is tested against the conventional LEACH protocol and the recently proposed YSGAP protocol. ROA-MOCT outperforms both LEACH and YSGAP in terms of network lifetime and throughput.
