Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.
On Positive Scalar Curvature and Moduli of Curves

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:We revisit some uniqueness results for a geometric nonlinear PDE related to the scalar curvature in Riemannian geometry and CR geometry. In the Riemannian case we give a new proof of the uniqueness result assuming only a positive lower bound for Ricci curvature. We apply the same principle in the CR case and reconstruct the Jerison-Lee identity in a more general setting. As a consequence we prove a stronger uniqueness result in the CR case. We also discuss some open problems for further study.

Abstract:Using minimal hypersurfaces, we obtain topological obstructions to admitting complete metrics with positive scalar curvature on a given class of non-compact n-manifolds with n less than 8. We show that the Liouville theorem for a locally conformally flat n-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature follows from the impossibility of there being a positive scalar curvature metric on its connect sum with the n-torus. With the recent work of Chodosh-Li, the Liouville theorem is now proved in all remaining cases. Finally, using MOTS instead of minimal hypersurfaces, we show an Initial Data Set version of these results with the Dominant Energy Scalar appearing instead of positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:Let M-n, n >= 3, be a compact differentiable manifold with nonpositive Yamabe invariant sigma(M). Suppose g(0) is a continuous metric with volume V (M, g(0)) = 1, smooth outside a compact set Sigma, and is in W-loc(1,p) for some p > n. Suppose the scalar curvature of g(0) is at least sigma(M) outside Sigma. We prove that g(0) is Einstein outside Sigma if the codimension of Sigma is at least 2. If in addition, g(0) is Lipschitz then g(0) is smooth and Einstein after a change of the smooth structure. If Sigma is a compact embedded hypersurface, g(0) is smooth up to Sigma from two sides of Sigma, and if the difference of the mean curvatures along Sigma at two sides of Sigma has a fixed appropriate sign, then g(0) is also Einstein outside Sigma. For manifolds with dimension between 3 and 7, without a spin assumption we obtain a positive mass theorem on an asymptotically flat manifold for metrics with a compact singular set of codimension at least 2.

Abstract:We show that any Riemannian metric conformal to the round metric on $S^n$, for $n\geq 4$, arises as a limit of a sequence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on $S^n$ in the sense of uniform convergence of Riemannian distance. In particular, non-negativity of scalar curvature is not preserved under such limits.

Abstract:We obtain topological obstructions to the existence of a complete Riemannian metric with uniformly positive scalar curvature on certain (non-compact) $4$-manifolds. In particular, such a metric on the interior of a compact contractible $4$-manifold uniquely distinguishes the standard $4$-ball up to diffeomorphism among Mazur manifolds and up to homeomorphism in general. We additionally show there exist uncountably many exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s that do not admit such a metric and that any (non-compact) tame $4$-manifold has a smooth structure that does not admit such a metric.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:We study notions of isotopy and concordance for Riemannian metrics on manifolds with boundary and, in particular, we introduce two variants of the concept of minimal concordance, the weaker one naturally arising when considering certain spaces of metrics defined by a suitable spectral ''stability'' condition. We develop some basic tools and obtain a rather complete picture in the case of surfaces.

Abstract:A (compact) manifold with fibered $P$-singularities is a (possibly) singular pseudomanifold $M_\Sigma$ with two strata: an open nonsingular stratum $\mathring M$ (a smooth open manifold) and a closed stratum $\beta M$ (a closed manifold of positive codimension), such that a tubular neighborhood of $\beta M$ is a fiber bundle with fibers each looking like the cone on a fixed closed manifold $P$. We discuss what it means for such an $M_{\Sigma}$ with fibered $P$-singularities to admit an appropriate Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, and we give necessary and sufficient conditions (the necessary conditions based on suitable versions of index theory, the sufficient conditions based on surgery methods and homotopy theory) for this to happen when the singularity type $P$ is either $\mathbb Z/k$ or $S^1$, and $M$ and the boundary of the tubular neighborhood of the singular stratum are simply connected and carry spin structures. Along the way, we prove some results of perhaps independent interest, concerning metrics on spin$^c$ manifolds with positive "twisted scalar curvature," where the twisting comes from the curvature of the spin$^c$ line bundle.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.

Abstract:Let $D$ be a smooth divisor on a closed Kähler manifold $X$. First, we prove that Poincaré type constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric with a singularity at $D$ is unique up to a holomorphic transformation on $X$ that preserves $D$, if there are no nontrivial holomorphic vector fields on $D$. For the general case, we propose a conjecture relating the uniqueness of Poincaré type cscK metric to its asymptotic behavior near $D$. We give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for those Poincaré type cscK metrics whose asymptotic behavior is invariant under any holomorphic transformation of $X$ that preserve $D$. We also show that this conjecture can be reduced to a fixed point problem.
