Abstract:20,713 individuals of 438 species had been rescued from 2017 to 2021 by Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. There was an increasing trend of the rescued individuals from the wild at an annual basis over the study period. The peak months for wildlife rescue were from May to June, and the secondary was from March to April and again from July to October. There was a decreasing trend within the numbers of individuals confiscated by law enforcement agency at an annual basis. Among wildlife confiscated by law enforcement agency, there was a decreasing trend with animals that were naturally distributed in China, but an increasing trend in alien animals. The peaks for wildlife confiscated by law enforcement agency appeared from April to May and from September to October. The increasing trends yearly within wildlife rescued from the wild and the decreasing trends yearly within wildlife confiscated by law enforcement agency indicate significant achievements in improving environment quality and wildlife conservation. One rescue institution cannot meet wildlife rescue needs and the problem becomes increasingly pronounced, thereby the inevitable choice is to establish a wildlife rescue system combined with full-time and part-time work regimes, and public based involvement, in order to ensure rescue capacity during the peak periods and emergent events. Clarifying the receiving range of wildlife rescue agencies, establishing feasible non-local wildlife disposal process and mechanism, and reducing the occupation of rescue resources are also urgent problems to be solved in wildlife rescue work at present. In addition, in the follow-up work, wildlife rescue agencies should pay attention to the construction of species identification, archives registration, injury diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation and feeding and other aspects of the technology sharing standard system, continue to improve the rescue capacity, in order to cope with the growing demand for wildlife rescue.

Abstract:With the adjustment of rural economic and industrial structures as well as the increasing of human activities,the wild habitat of black stork in Beijing area is damaged in different degree. This change occasionally causes feeding difficulties,illness or injury of black stork. The main threaten factors of black stork in Beijing area were studied by investigating the population size and analyzing the injury causes of rescued individuals,and corresponding countermeasures for protection was proposed.

Abstract:China has about 11% of the world's total wildlife species, so strengthening China's wildlife conservation is of great significance to global biodiversity. Despite some successful cases and conservation efforts, 21.4% of China's vertebrate species are threatened by human activities. The booming wildlife trade in China has posed serious threat to wildlife in China and throughout the world, while leading to a high risk of transmission of infectious zoonotic diseases. China's wildlife conservation has faced a series of challenges, two of which are an impractical, separated management of wildlife and outdated protected species lists. Although the Wildlife Protection Law of China was revised in 2016, the issues of separated management remain, and the protected species lists are still not adequately revised. These issues have led to inefficient and overlapping management, waste of administrative resources, and serious obstacles to wildlife protection. In this article, we analyze the negative effects of current separated management of wildlife species and outdated protected species lists, and provide some suggestions for amendment of the laws and reform of wildlife management system.

Abstract:A study was conducted to approach the techniques and strategies for urban wildlife management from three aspects including species, habitat and landscape based on the status of Harbin. It is suggested that some important habitats should be set up as urban reserves to maintain wildlife populations, and population rising curve could be used to control some over-producing populations by separation and contraception. Disturbance is also an important concern in management, which helps to increase the community biodiversity by imposing some necessary disturbance. The management strategy based on disturbance gradients could settle the contradiction between the development of city and the maintenance of biodiversity. The selection of surrogate species is a shortcut for community management, and a group of indicator species could assure to obtain a more accurate monitoring result. A permit mechanism for the feeding and trading of alien species should be established, and the species reintroduction could be made with the improvement of urban environment and the melioration of habitat quality, and the introduction of more third class carnivores could fulfill niche vacancy of urban ecosystem. The management of habitat should take into consideration the characteristics of urban wildlife so as to meet the need of wildlife in different periods and to provide various cover resources. Corridors between patches should be built to minimize the influence of landscape fragment and heighten the landscape connectivity of urban greenbelts, which would be helpful to support more wildlife in the limited habitat area.

Abstract:We summarize the status of distribution and habitat of red panda in China.Most of the research on red panda in China has focused on selection of habitat and food,and was carried out in Sichuan Province.The main threats to red panda are human disturbance,over - harvesting of forests,and poaching.We recommend increasing funding for red panda research,expanding the protected areas that encompass red panda habitats,developing and implementing compensation systems for villagers that lose incomes or suffer relocation to protect red panda habitats,improving public awareness,and enhancing scientific researches.
Research Advances on the Current Situation and Management of Human Wildlife Conflict in China

Abstract:Human-wildlife conflict (HWC) has become a major issue in China,however,there is little practical experience in resolving such conflicts or discussion on methodology that can be used.HWC in China,occurring in the west and southwest,resulted in enormous economic loss,serious threat to human security and health,and increasing difficulty for wildlife conservation.Three factors were believed to cause such HWC:increasing human population resulting in encroachment into wild spaces,overlap of living spaces between humans and wildlife,and some wildlife foraging on crops.Much work has been done to reduce the HWC under the areas of habitat management,species management and human management.But it is suggested we should make progress in the study of theoretic systems,effective technique and methods,and potential trouble animal species.

Abstract:Most cities in China came under greater pressure of urbanization and urban regeneration in recent years,the research on total conservation of urban remnant seminatural habitats becomes more and more urgent.In this article,the concept and connotation of urban remnant seminatural habitats were expatiated,and the research advance in urban remnant seminatural habitats was reviewed.The overseas studies of urban remnant seminatural habitats were focused on fragmentation and human disturbance,species survey and ecosystem services analysis,value for birds inhabiting,whole habitats survey,assessment and management;while in China,they were focused on the protection of urban zonal vegetations,biotope mapping,urban wildlife habitats survey and strategy for urban seminatural habitats protection.The shortages and prospects of the researches on total conservation of urban seminatural habitats were put forward.

Abstract:The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a flagship species in nature conservation. Habitat degradation and fragmentation threaten the sustainable survival of giant pandas, and thus degraded habitats need to be restored and fragmented habitats require connection. In the past ten years, some new studies have emerged on the habitat restoration of giant pandas, yet no specialized reviews of this topic have been published. This paper reviews the habitat restoration of giant pandas based on related articles published between 2012 and 2021. Three principal research topics are identified and summarized: restoration effect, restoration requirements, and restoration considerations. The review demonstrates that some measures, such as protection projects and policies, controlling human disturbances and impacts, and natural recovery, contribute to the habitat restoration of giant pandas. Many issues related to artificial forests need to be addressed to clarify their role in habitat restoration. Many habitats with clear locations and types need restoration, especially those that are disturbed or threatened by human activities and some that are disturbed by natural disturbances such as earthquakes. To integrate consideration factors, a reference habitat should be established and well described. In addition, social and economic factors should not be ignored. More targeted studies of the habitat restoration of giant pandas are urgently needed, including theoretical, cross-scale, interdisciplinary, multi-factor, and long-term monitoring studies. This review provides a reference for future research work and a source of information for future restoration of giant panda habitat.

Abstract:China is one of the world′s richest countries in biodiversity,but at the same time,also one of the countries where biodiversity is under the most serious threat.In 1950s and 60s,a large-scale biodiversity survey was carried out,laying down a solid foundation for composition of a series monographs of the vegetation,flora and fauna of China.Since 1990s,surveys have been going on in key areas to investigate important resources.Besides,categories and criteria for Red List have been developed,endangeredness of wild animal and plant species evaluated and graded,and demonstrative evaluation of the grading of endangeredness of ecosystems carried out.Great progress has also been made in ex-situ and in-situ conservation of biodiversity,and a series of relevant conservation planning reports and documents issued.Based on the achievements in the field of investigation and conservation of biodiversity,a review from the aspects of biodiversity survey,grading and evaluation of endangeredness,in ex-situ and in-situ conservation,policies and planning for biodiversity conservation is presented of the progresses China has made in the past 20 years in researches related to investigation and conservation of biodiversity.In addition,orientation of future research is proposed in light of existing problems.The authors hold that a comprehensive biodiversity survey is a basic work and hence suggest that comprehensive investigation and evaluation of the background of the biodiversity be further carried out,and a biodiversity monitoring network system be established.
Investigation on the Rescue of Birds in Poyang Lake in Recent Years

Abstract:In China, there are abundant bird resources, however, due to limited professional bird rescue agencies, China lacks mature and systematic experience with respect to birds’ rescue. Poyang Lake is a vital bird habitat in China, every year, a number of birds will be rescued for various reasons. study documented the records of rescued birds during 2012-2014 in Poyang Lake and made a statistical analysis. The results indicated that there were 15 rescued birds in total, including 13 adult birds and 2 young birds. Especially, the number of Anser amounted to 7 that outnumbers other genera. The rescued birds were mainly delivered from Poyang Lake Nature Reserve Administration, Poyang Lake Nature Reserve Monitoring Station, Wild Animal Protection Station of Forestry Bureau and citizens. Among them, Nature Reserve Administration sent 10 birds, accounting for 66.7% of the total. The main injury symptoms of rescued birds were grouped into three types: fracture, poisoning and trauma, which caused by casting nets, poisonings, natural enemies and others. The survival rate of the rescued birds reached 80%. This research provides valuable references for protection and rescue of wild birds.

Abstract:Rare animals and the main distribution areas in Guangxi Beibu Gulf were listed by data collection and visiting coasts in Guangxi Beibu Gulf,and status quo of Chinese White Dolphins was analyzed in terms of distribution area,the amount of resources and environmental pressures. Furthermore,it is proposed that the damages caused by marine pollution,habitat loss and human fishing are the most serious on rare animals and it is urgent to take countermeasures.

Abstract:Based on the introduction of the characteristics of biodiversity in northwestern China, we comprehensively viewed on the status of biodiversity, and analyzed the crisis that biodiversity in northwestern China is being facing. We put forward the ways and thoughts for biodiversity study in northwestern China as fallows: 1)inventorying all animal and plant as well as microbes species and building the geographical information system for monitoring and predicting; 2) biological conservation studies on important endangered animals and plants; 3) studies on ex situ conservation, artificial reproduction and enlarging population of rare and endangered species, and 4)studies on reinstating biodiversity; 5) studies on sustainable utilization of biodiversity.
Current Status and Evaluation on Biological Resources of Shangshehu Wetland Nature Reserve in Wuhan

Abstract:The animal and plant resources in wetland nature reserve of Shangshe Lake region in Wuhan were investigated.The study results showed that there were 581 species of vascular plants in this nature reserve,among which,556 species were spermatophytes.There were 20 formations belonging to 5 vegetation types in study area.The wetland nature reserve was habitat for 29 species of zoobenthos,74 species of fish,23 species of wetland beasts falling into 9 families of 6 orders,111 species of wetland birds.Two species of fish are protected provincially,4 species of beasts are protected provincially,1 species of beast is listed in the second category of state key protected wildlife list.As far as the bird resources is concerned,8 species and 3 species are listed respectively in the second category of state key protected wildlife list and the first category of state key protected wildlife list,36 species are protected provincially,15 species are listed in the list of CITES,6 species are listed in China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals,47 species are listed in Sino-Japanese Migrant Pact,14 species are listed in Sino-Australian Migrant Pact,86 species are listed in Animal Directory under State Protection.Based on the results of this investigation and study,the wetland nature reserve of Shangshe Lake region in Wuhan can be evaluated as a nature reserve with integrate eco-system,abundant biodiversity,particularity of animal species,which is comply with the standard of wetland in China.

Current Issues in Tourism

Abstract:China is rich in wildlife resources but no comprehensive review of the research literature in relation to the nexus between wildlife and tourism interests in China has been completed. This review considers research undertaken on both consumptive and non-consumptive wildlife tourism, and shows that wildlife tourism has gained much attention in China recently. A data set was created recording attributes including authors, article titles, publication years and sources, keywords and abstracts. A more detailed analysis of the research topics, methodologies and research regions was conducted and this was accompanied by recourse to the full texts to more fully identify key findings. The research has a predominant focus on captive, semi-captive and tourism experiences in the wild, with the giant panda and bird-watching as key subjects. Research articles have been published in a range of journals but only about 32% of these are considered as key journals in China. The analysis demonstrates a rising interest in wildlife tourism. Although topics include the development of wildlife tourism, studies of visitor attitudes, analysis of visitor impacts on destinations and aspects of environmental education for tourists, this research is in its infancy and there is scope for a comprehensive and extended wildlife tourism research agenda.
