Abstract:In quasicrystals, there are not only conventional, but also phason displacement fields and associated Burgers vectors. We have calculated approximate solutions for the elastic fields induced by two-, three- and fivefold straight screw- and edge-dislocations in infinite icosahedral quasicrystals by means of a generalized perturbation method. Starting from the solution for elastic isotropy in phonon and phason spaces, corrections of higher order reflect the two-, three- and fivefold symmetry of the elastic fields surrounding screw dislocations. The fields of special edge dislocations display characteristic symmetries also, which can be seen from the contributions of all orders.

Abstract:The nonlinear elasticities are analyzed for octagonal and dodecagonal quasicrystals. All the third-order elastic constants are determined. According to Hermann's theorem, quasicrystal anisotropy may be revealed by the nonlinear elasticities due to the coupling between phonons and phasons. The summary on isotropy or anisotropy of all quasicrystal elasticities is given.

Abstract:A theoretical framework for dislocation dynamics in quasicrystals is provided according to the continuum theory of dislocations. Firstly, we present the fundamental theory for moving dislocations in quasicrystals giving the dislocation density tensors and introducing the dislocation current tensors for the phonon and phason fields, including the Bianchi identities. Next, we give the equations of motion for the incompatible elastodynamics as well as for the incompatible elasto-hydrodynamics of quasicrystals. We continue with the derivation of the balance law of pseudomomentum thereby obtaining the generalized forms of the Eshelby stress tensor, the pseudomomentum vector, the dynamical Peach-Koehler force density and the Cherepanov force density for quasicrystals. The form of the dynamical Peach-Koehler force for a straight dislocation is obtained as well. Moreover, we deduce the balance law of energy that gives rise to the generalized forms of the field intensity vector and the elastic power density of quasicrystals. The above balance laws are produced for both models. The differences between the two models and their consequences are revealed. The influences of the phason fields as well as of the dynamical terms are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a mesoscale field theory unifying the modeling of growth, elasticity, and dislocations in quasicrystals. The theory is based on the amplitudes entering their density-wave representation. We introduce a free energy functional for complex amplitudes and assume non-conserved dissipative dynamics to describe their evolution. Elasticity, including phononic and phasonic deformation, defect nucleation and motion, emerges self-consistently by prescribing only the symmetry of quasicrystals. Predictions on the formation of semi-coherent interfaces and dislocation kinematics are given.

Abstract:Dislocations and the elastic fields they induce in anisotropic elastic crystals are basic for understanding and modeling the mechanical properties of crystalline solids. Unlike previous solutions that provide the strain and/or stress fields induced by dislocation loops, in this paper, we develop, for the first time, an approach to solve the more fundamental problem—the anisotropic elastic dislocation displacement field. By applying the point-force Green’s function for a three-dimensional anisotropic elastic material, the elastic displacement induced by a dislocation of polygonal shape is derived in terms of a simple line integral. It is shown that the singularities in the integrand of this integral are all removable. The proposed expression is applied to calculate the elastic displacements of dislocations of two different fundamental shapes, i.e. triangular and hexagonal. The results show that the displacement jump across the dislocation loop surface exactly equals the assigned Burgers vector, demonstrating that the proposed approach is accurate. The dislocation-induced displacement contours are also presented, which could be used as benchmarks for future numerical studies.
High Strain Gradient Plasticity Associated with Wedge Indentation into Face-Centered Cubic Single Crystals: Geometrically Necessary Dislocation Densities

Abstract:Experimental studies on indentation into face-centered cubic (FCC) single crystals such as copper and aluminum were performed to reveal the spatially resolved variation in crystal lattice rotation induced due to wedge indentation. The crystal lattice curvature tensors of the indented crystals were calculated from the in-plane lattice rotation results as measured by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Nye's dislocation density tensors for plane strain deformation of both crystals were determined from the lattice curvature tensors. The least L2-norm solutions to the geometrically necessary dislocation densities for the case in which three effective in-plane slip systems were activated in the single crystals associated with the indentation were determined. Results show the formation of lattice rotation discontinuities along with a very high density of geometrically necessary dislocations.

Abstract:A phase field model of a crystalline material at the mesoscale is introduced to develop the necessary theoretical framework to study plastic flow due to dislocation motion. We first obtain the elastic stress from the phase field free energy and show that it obeys the stress strain relation of linear elasticity. Dislocations in a two dimensional hexagonal lattice are shown to be composite topological defects in the amplitude expansion of the phase field, with topological charges given by the Burgers vector. This allows us to introduce a formal relation between dislocation velocity and the evolution of the coarse grained envelopes of the phase field. Standard dissipative dynamics of the phase field crystal model is shown to determine the velocity of the dislocations. When the amplitude equation is valid, we derive the Peach-Koehler force on a dislocation, and compute the associated defect mobility. A numerical integration of the phase field crystal equations in two dimensions is used to compute the motion of a dislocation dipole, and good agreement is found with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The present work provides fundamental quantities in generalized elasticity and dislocation theory of quasicrystals. In a clear and straightforward manner, the three-dimensional Green tensor of generalized elasticity theory and the extended displacement vector for an arbitrary extended force are derived. Next, in the framework of dislocation theory of quasicrystals, the solutions of the field equations for the extended displacement vector and the extended elastic distortion tensor are given; that is the generalized Burgers equation for arbitrary sources and the generalized Mura-Willis formula, respectively. Moreover, important quantities of the theory of dislocations as the Eshelby stress tensor, Peach-Koehler force, stress function tensor and the interaction energy are derived for general dislocations. The application to dislocation loops gives rise to the generalized Burgers equation, where the displacement vector can be written as a sum of a line integral plus a purely geometric part. Finally, using the Green tensor, all other dislocation key-formulas for loops, known from the theory of anisotropic elasticity, like the Peach-Koehler stress formula, Mura-Willis equation, Volterra equation, stress function tensor and the interaction energy are derived for quasicrystals.

Abstract:Elastic fields in quantum dot (QD) structures affect their physical and mechanical properties, and they also play a significant role in their fabrication. The elastic fields in QD structures may be induced by mismatches in the coefficients of thermal expansion and the lattice constants of species, by defects, and by external loading. The calculation of the elastic fields in QD structures is complicated by several factors: by the complex shapes of QDs; by the anisotropy of the material species; and by the interface effects at the nano scale. In this paper we present a general approach to the calculation of the elastic fields in QD structures of arbitrary shape. This approach can also deal with the anisotropy of the QD material, the non-uniformity of its composition, the mismatch in the elastic constants of the matrix and the QD, and the interface effect. The effects of these factors on the elastic fields are depicted by analytical and numerical results.
Microplasticity and yielding in crystals with heterogeneous dislocation distribution

Abstract:In this study, we use discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulation to investigate the effect of heterogeneous dislocation density on the transition between quasi-elastic deformation and plastic flow in face-centered cubic single crystals. By analyzing the stress-strain curves of samples with an initial, axial dislocation density gradient, we arrive at the following conclusions: (i) in the regime of quasi-elastic deformation before the onset of plastic flow, the effective elastic modulus of the simulated samples falls significantly below the value for a dislocation-free crystal. This modulus reduction increases with decreasing dislocation density gradient: crystals with homogeneous dislocation distribution are thus weakest in the quasi-elastic regime; (ii) the transition towards plastic flow occurs first in regions of reduced dislocation density. Therefore, the overall yield stress decreases with increasing dislocation density gradient; (iii) crystals with dislocation density gradient exhibit a more pronounced hardening stage during which stress is re-distributed onto stronger regions with higher dislocation density until the sample flows at a constant flow stress that is approximately independent on dislocation density gradient. We interpret these findings in terms of a continuum dislocation dynamics inspired model of dislocation density evolution that accounts for inversive dislocation motions. The transition between quasi-elastic and plastic deformation is interpreted as a transition from inversive to non-inversive dislocation motion, and the initial differences in elastic modulus are related to a density dependent polarizability of the dislocation system. The subsequent plastic flow behavior is analyzed in terms of a modified version of Mughrabi's composite model.

Elastic Displacement and Stress Fields Induced by a Dislocation of Polygonal Shape in an Anisotropic Elastic Half-Space

Abstract:The elastic displacement and stress fields due to a polygonal dislocation within an anisotropic homogeneous half-space are studied in this paper. Simple line integrals from 0 to pi for the elastic fields are derived by applying the point-force Green's functions in the corresponding half-space. Notably, the geometry of the polygonal dislocation is included entirely in the integrand easing integration for any arbitrarily shaped dislocation. We apply the proposed method to a hexagonal shaped dislocation loop with Burgers vector along [(1) over bar 1 0] lying on the crystallographic (1 1 1) slip plane within a half-space of a copper crystal. It is demonstrated numerically that the displacement jump condition on the dislocation loop surface and the traction-free condition on the surface of the half-space are both satisfied. On the free surface of the half-space, it is shown that the distributions of the hydrostatic stress (sigma(11) + sigma(22))/2 and pseudohydrostatic displacement (u(1) + u(2))/2 are both anti-symmetric, while the biaxial stress (sigma(11) - sigma(22))/2 and pseudobiaxial displacement (u(1) - u(2))/2 are both symmetric. Abstract:Based on rigorous operator theory, a general solution of the three-dimensional elasticity equations of equilibrium for 1D hexagonal quasicrystals is obtained. The solution is expressed in terms of four quasiharmonic functions, which is very simple and useful. The point phonon (phason) force solution of an infinite 1D hexagonal quasicrystal body is derived, all in terms of elementary functions. They can play an important role in numerical simulations such as boundary element method.

Abstract:This work addresses differences in predicted elastic fields created by dislocations either by the Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model, or by static Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM). The PFC order parameter describes the topological content of the lattice, but it fails to correctly capture the elastic distortion. In contrast, static FDM correctly captures the latter but requires input about defect cores. The case of a dislocation dipole in two dimensional, isotropic, elastic medium is studied, and a weak coupling is introduced between the two models. The PFC model produces compact and stable dislocation cores, free of any singularity, i.e., diffuse. The PFC predicted dislocation density field (a measure of the topological defect content) is used as the source (input) for the static FDM problem. This coupling allows a critical analysis of the relative role played by configurational (from PFC) and elastic (from static FDM) fields in the theory, and of the consequences of the lack of elastic relaxation in the diffusive evolution of the PFC order parameter.

Abstract:We introduce a dislocation density tensor and derive its kinematic evolution law from a phase field description of crystal deformations in three dimensions. The phase field crystal (PFC) model is used to define the lattice distortion, including topological singularities, and the associated configurational stresses. We derive an exact expression for the velocity of dislocation line determined by the phase field evolution, and show that dislocation motion in the PFC is driven by a Peach-Koehler force. As is well known from earlier PFC model studies, the configurational stress is not divergence free for a general field configuration. Therefore, we also present a method (PFCMEq) to constrain the diffusive dynamics to mechanical equilibrium by adding an independent and integrable distortion so that the total resulting stress is divergence free. In the PFCMEq model, the far-field stress agrees very well with the predictions from continuum elasticity, while the near-field stress around the dislocation core is regularized by the smooth nature of the phase-field. We apply this framework to study the rate of shrinkage of an dislocation loop seeded in its glide plane.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. The interaction between a piezoelectric screw dislocation and collinear rigid lines in one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal quasicrystals (QCs) under anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loading is analysed. Two idealized electrical assumptions, namely electrically conductive and dielectric, are considered. By using Muskhelishvilid's complex transformation method, the explicit expressions for the field variables, the singularity of the field variables at the line tip and the force on the dislocation are obtained for a single rigid line. Based on the generalized Peach–Koehler formula, the generalized stress intensity factors and image force on dislocations in piezoelectric quasicrystal (PQC) are obtained. It is evident that the existence of phason field has an effect on image force.

Elastic Interaction-Induced Anisotropic Growth of Dislocation Loop Arrays

Abstract:The elastic interactions and reactions of dislocations lead to the formation of complex dislocation substructures, which is critical to the strain hardening and fatigue failure. Phase field dislocation dynamics simulations are conducted as a first step to understand the elastic interactions between dislocation loops. When the interloop spacing is small, the elastic interactions with neighboring loops become strong, rendering the edge segments strongly pinned, while allowing for the screw segments to propagate more easily. The interactions are found to result in an anisotropic stress distribution around the dislocation loops, leading to the formation of arrays of long, straight edge dislocations that could act as barriers to subsequent slip. Furthermore, the effect of initial loop size and applied strain rate on the elastic interaction-induced anisotropic pinning effect is investigated and discussed. The results are important for coarse-graining dislocation substructures formation into continuum level models of deformation in crystalline solids.

Abstract:The generalized elasticity is applied to the analysis of quasicrystals to account for the mechanical response of the phonon and phason fields. Using the operator method introduced by Lur’e, the general solutions are derived for three-dimensional constrained cubic quasicrystals, leading to the fundamental solution with the phonon-phason coupling effect. Based on the experimental observation that most three-dimensional quasicrystals are of weak anisotropy, we firstly introduce a weak anisotropy approximation on the phason field and the phono-phason coupling field to construct a new quasicrystal model with weak anisotropy. Using this new model, we derived the new general solutions like the generalized Boussinesq-Galerkin solution, the generalized Papkovich-Neuber solution and the generalized Kelvin solution. We identified the distinction between quasicrystals and classical elastic isotropic media when anisotropy is weak. These solutions present complicated mechanical behaviors that cannot be seen in traditional isotropic media, such as phonon-phason symmetry breaking. We find out that the phason field itself could lead to certain unique phenomena without involving complex anisotropy, and the loading ratio has a noticeable influence on the quasicrystals even with weak anisotropy. These findings could serve as the theoretical basis to guide the future experiments of quasicrystals.

Abstract:In this work, a novel dislocation density field-based crystal plasticity formulation, that incorporates up-scaled continuum dislocation density fields to represent all possible characters of the dislocation density, is presented. The continuum dislocation field theory, formulated assuming large strain kinematics, is based on an all-dislocation concept, whereby individual dislocation density types are described as vector fields. The evolutionary behaviour of the dislocation density fields is defined in terms of a glide component derived from the classical general conservation law for dislocation density fields proposed originally by Kroner and Acharya, a rotation one given by the curl of the dislocation velocity vector as proposed originally by Ngan and co-workers, and a statistically stored dislocation source/sink component. The proposed formulation has been numerically implemented within the finite element method using a modified up-wind stabilisation approach, which results on eight extra independent nodal degrees of freedom per slip system, associated with the upscaled dislocation densities of pure edge and screw character. Furthermore, the required boundary conditions are simple: initial total dislocation density and dislocation flux or velocity, without the need for higher order boundary conditions. Full details of the numerical implementation of the crystal plasticity theory are given. The theory is then used to investigate classical boundary value problems involving 1D and 2D dislocation pile-ups, and the development of boundary layers in a deforming single crystal strip under constrained conditions. The main general understanding that emerges from the case studies is that, as either the dislocation pile-ups or the boundary layers develop with deformation, geometrically necessary dislocations are generated and lead to an overall behaviour that is size-dependent. Furthermore, it is shown that, in the absence of sources or sinks, which are statistically stored in nature, that total number of dislocations in the pile-up problems is preserved. The numerical predictions of the 1D pile-up and strip simple shear problems are in good agreement with published solutions.

Abstract:Although the multi-scale discrete-continuous model (DCM) which couples discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) and finite element method (FEM) to study crystal plasticity at submicron scale has been proposed for many years, some key issues are still not well addressed yet. First, a new regularization method with slip plane dependent regularization parameter is proposed in this paper to localize the discrete plastic strain to continuum material points and shows excellent accuracy compared with previous studies. Second, it is often thought of that DCM cannot accurately calculate the so called ‘image force’ acting on the dislocation near free surface. This study argues that the image force can be calculated accurately in the hybrid DCM in which the interpolated stress is used in the computation. The reproduction of deformed crystal configuration during finite deformation is another critical issue in DCM, especially for considering the rotation of slip system. The deformation field transfer between DDD and FEM, and the corresponding treatment of surface dislocations and slip system rotation are proposed to well capture the localized deformation. As an application, the dislocation behavior and stress field in heteroepitaxial films with thin/thick substrates are successfully investigated by the improved DCM.
