Abstract:PPAD refers to a class of computational problems for which solutions are guaranteed to exist due to a specific combinatorial principle. The most well-known such problem is that of computing a Nash equilibrium of a game. Other examples include the search for market equilibria, and envy-free allocations in the context of cake-cutting. A problem is said to be complete for PPAD if it belongs to PPAD and can be shown to constitute one of the hardest computational challenges within that class. In this paper, I give a relatively informal overview of the proofs used in the PPAD-completeness results. The focus is on the mixed Nash equilibria guaranteed to exist by Nash's theorem. I also give an overview of some recent work that uses these ideas to show PSPACE-completeness for the computation of specific equilibria found by homotopy methods. I give a brief introduction to related problems of searching for market equilibria.

Abstract:We prove that finding an $\epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibrium is PPAD-complete for constant $\epsilon$ and a particularly simple class of games: polymatrix, degree 3 graphical games, in which each player has only two actions. As corollaries, we also prove similar inapproximability results for Bayesian Nash equilibrium in a two-player incomplete information game with a constant number of actions, for relative $\epsilon$-Well Supported Nash Equilibrium in a two-player game, for market equilibrium in a non-monotone market, for the generalized circuit problem defined by Chen, Deng, and Teng [CDT'09], and for approximate competitive equilibrium from equal incomes with indivisible goods.

PPAD-Complete Pure Approximate Nash Equilibria in Lipschitz Games

Abstract:Lipschitz games, in which there is a limit $\lambda$ (the Lipschitz value of the game) on how much a player's payoffs may change when some other player deviates, were introduced about 10 years ago by Azrieli and Shmaya. They showed via the probabilistic method that $n$-player Lipschitz games with $m$ strategies per player have pure $\epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria, for $\epsilon\geq\lambda\sqrt{8n\log(2mn)}$. Here we provide the first hardness result for the corresponding computational problem, showing that even for a simple class of Lipschitz games (Lipschitz polymatrix games), finding pure $\epsilon$-approximate equilibria is PPAD-complete, for suitable pairs of values $(\epsilon(n), \lambda(n))$. Novel features of this result include both the proof of PPAD hardness (in which we apply a population game reduction from unrestricted polymatrix games) and the proof of containment in PPAD (by derandomizing the selection of a pure equilibrium from a mixed one). In fact, our approach implies containment in PPAD for any class of Lipschitz games where payoffs from mixed-strategy profiles can be deterministically computed.

Abstract:In this work, we study three discrete fixed point concepts (SPERNER,DPZP,BROUWER) under two different models: the polynomial-time function model and the oracle function model. We fully characterize the computational complexities of these three problems. The computational complexity unification of the above problems gives us more choices in the study of different applications. As an example, by a reduction from DPZP, we derive asymptotically equal lower and upper bounds for TUCKER in the oracle model. The same reduction also allows us to derive a single proof for the PPAD-completeness of TUCKER in any constant dimension d, which is significantly simpler than the recent proof for the 2D case by Pálvölgyi, and for the 3D case and higher dimensions by Papadimitriou.

Abstract:We advance significantly beyond the recent progress on the algorithmic complexity of Nash equilibria by solving two major open problems in the approximation of Nash equilibria and in the smoothed analysis of algorithms. --We show that no algorithm with complexity poly(n, \frac{1} { \in } ) can compute an \in-approximate Nash equilibrium in a two-player game, in which each player has n pure strategies, unless PPAD \subseteq P. In other words, the problem of computing a Nash equilibrium in a twoplayer game does not have a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme unless PPAD \subseteq P. --We prove that no algorithm for computing a Nash equilibrium in a two-player game can have smoothed complexity poly(n, \frac{1} {\sigma } ) under input perturbation of magnitude s, unless PPAD \subseteq RP. In particular, the smoothed complexity of the classic Lemke-Howson algorithm is not polynomial unless PPAD \subseteq RP. Instrumental to our proof, we introduce a new discrete fixed-point problem on a high-dimensional hypergrid with constant side-length, and show that it can host the embedding of the proof structure of any PPAD problem. We prove a key geometric lemma for finding a discrete fixed-point, a new concept defined on n + 1 vertices of a unit hypercube. This lemma enables us to overcome the curse of dimensionality in reasoning about fixed-points in high dimensions.

Abstract:By proving that the problem of computing a 1/n-approximate Nash equilibrium remains PPAD-complete, we show that the BIMATRIX game is not likely to have a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme. In other words, no algorithm with time polynomial in n and 1/ǫ can compute an ǫ-approximate Nash equilibrium of an n×n bimatrix game, unless PPAD ⊆ P. Instrumental to our proof, we introduce a new discrete fixed-point problem on a high-dimensional cube with a constant side-length, such as on an n-dimensional cube with side-length 7, and show that they are PPAD-complete. Furthermore, we prove that it is unlikely, unless PPAD ⊆ RP, that the smoothed complexity of the LemkeHowson algorithm or any algorithm for computing a Nash equilibrium of a bimatrix game is polynomial in n and 1/σ under perturbations with magnitude σ. Our result answers a major open question in the smoothed analysis of algorithms and the approximation of Nash equilibria. Pure-Circuit: Tight Inapproximability for PPAD

Abstract:The current state-of-the-art methods for showing inapproximability in PPAD arise from the ε-Generalized-Circuit (ε- GCircuit ) problem. Rubinstein (2018) showed that there exists a small unknown constant ε for which ε- GCircuit is PPAD -hard, and subsequent work has shown hardness results for other problems in PPAD by using ε- GCircuit as an intermediate problem. We introduce Pure-Circuit , a new intermediate problem for PPAD , which can be thought of as ε- GCircuit pushed to the limit as ε → 1, and we show that the problem is PPAD -complete. We then prove that ε- GCircuit is PPAD -hard for all ε < 1/10 by a reduction from Pure-Circuit , and thus strengthen all prior work that has used GCircuit as an intermediate problem from the existential-constant regime to the large-constant regime. We show that stronger inapproximability results can be derived by reducing directly from Pure-Circuit . In particular, we prove tight inapproximability results for computing approximate Nash equilibria and approximate well-supported Nash equilibria in graphical games, for finding approximate well-supported Nash equilibria in polymatrix games, and for finding approximate equilibria in threshold games.

On the Complexity of 2D Discrete Fixed Point Problem

Abstract:We study a computational complexity version of the 2D Sperner problem, which states that any three coloring of vertices of a triangulated triangle, satisfying some boundary conditions, will have a trichromatic triangle. In introducing a complexity class PPAD, Papadimitriou [C.H. Papadimitriou, On graph-theoretic lemmata and complexity classes, in: Proceedings of the 31st Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science, 1990, 794–801] proved that its 3D analogue is PPAD-complete about fifteen years ago. The complexity of 2D-SPERNER itself has remained open since then. We settle this open problem with a PPAD-completeness proof. The result also allows us to derive the computational complexity characterization of a discrete version of the 2D Brouwer fixed point problem, improving a recent result of Daskalakis, Goldberg and Papadimitriou [C. Daskalakis, P.W. Goldberg, C.H. Papadimitriou, The complexity of computing a Nash equilibrium, in: Proceedings of the 38th Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC), 2006]. Those hardness results for the simplest version of those problems provide very useful tools to the study of other important problems in the PPAD class.

Abstract:While the 3-dimensional analogue of Sperner’s problem in the plane was known to be complete in class PPAD, the complexity of 2D-SPERNER itself is not known to be PPAD-complete or not. In this paper, we settle this open problem proposed by Papadimitriou [9] fifteen years ago. The result also allows us to derive the computational complexity characterization of a discrete version of the 2-dimensional Brouwer fixed point problem, improving a recent result of Daskalakis, Goldberg and Papadimitriou [4]. Those hardness results for the simplest version of those problems provide very useful tools to the study of other important problems in the PPAD class.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method for solving a PPAD-complete problem [Papadimitriou, 1994]. Given is the payoff matrix $C$ of a symmetric bimatrix game $(C, C^T)$ and our goal is to compute a Nash equilibrium of $(C, C^T)$. In this paper, we devise a nonlinear replicator dynamic (whose right-hand-side can be obtained by solving a pair of convex optimization problems) with the following property: Under any invertible $0 < C \leq 1$, every orbit of our dynamic starting at an interior strategy of the standard simplex approaches a set of strategies of $(C, C^T)$ such that, for each strategy in this set, a symmetric Nash equilibrium strategy can be computed by solving the aforementioned convex mathematical programs. We prove convergence using results in analysis (the analytic implicit function theorem), nonlinear optimization theory (duality theory, Berge's maximum principle, and a theorem of Robinson [1980] on the Lipschitz continuity of parametric nonlinear programs), and dynamical systems theory (such as the LaSalle invariance principle).

Abstract:This paper is concerned with complexity theoretic aspects of a general formulation of quantum game theory that models strategic interactions among rational agents that process and exchange quantum information. In particular, we prove that the computational problem of finding an approximate Nash equilibrium in a broad class of quantum games is, like the analogous problem for classical games, included in (and therefore complete for) the complexity class PPAD. Our main technical contribution, which facilitates this inclusion, is an extension of prior methods in computational game theory to strategy spaces that are characterized by semidefinite programs.

Completeness in the Polynomial Hierarchy for many natural Problems in Bilevel and Robust Optimization

Abstract:Because $\Sigma^p_2$- and $\Sigma^p_3$-hardness proofs are usually tedious and difficult, not so many complete problems for these classes are known. This is especially true in the areas of min-max regret robust optimization, network interdiction, most vital vertex problems, blocker problems, and two-stage adjustable robust optimization problems. Even though these areas are well-researched for over two decades and one would naturally expect many (if not most) of the problems occurring in these areas to be complete for the above classes, almost no completeness results exist in the literature. We address this lack of knowledge by introducing over 70 new $\Sigma^p_2$-complete and $\Sigma^p_3$-complete problems. We achieve this result by proving a new meta-theorem, which shows $\Sigma^p_2$- and $\Sigma^p_3$-completeness simultaneously for a huge class of problems. The majority of all earlier publications on $\Sigma^p_2$- and $\Sigma^p_3$-completeness in said areas are special cases of our meta-theorem. Our precise result is the following: We introduce a large list of problems for which the meta-theorem is applicable (including clique, vertex cover, knapsack, TSP, facility location and many more). For every problem on this list, we show: The interdiction/minimum cost blocker/most vital nodes problem (with element costs) is $\Sigma^p_2$-complete. The min-max-regret problem with interval uncertainty is $\Sigma^p_2$-complete. The two-stage adjustable robust optimization problem with discrete budgeted uncertainty is $\Sigma^p_3$-complete. In summary, our work reveals the interesting insight that a large amount of NP-complete problems have the property that their min-max versions are 'automatically' $\Sigma^p_2$-complete.

PPAD-membership for Problems with Exact Rational Solutions: A General Approach via Convex Optimization

Abstract:We introduce a general technique for proving membership of search problems with exact rational solutions in PPAD, one of the most well-known classes containing total search problems with polynomial-time verifiable solutions. In particular, we construct a "pseudogate", coined the linear-OPT-gate, which can be used as a "plug-and-play" component in a piecewise-linear (PL) arithmetic circuit, as an integral component of the "Linear-FIXP" equivalent definition of the class. The linear-OPT-gate can solve several convex optimization programs, including quadratic programs, which often appear organically in the simplest existence proofs for these problems. This effectively transforms existence proofs to PPAD-membership proofs, and consequently establishes the existence of solutions described by rational numbers. Using the linear-OPT-gate, we are able to significantly simplify and generalize almost all known PPAD-membership proofs for finding exact solutions in the application domains of game theory, competitive markets, auto-bidding auctions, and fair division, as well as to obtain new PPAD-membership results for problems in these domains.

Abstract:We consider the non-convex non-concave objective function in two-player zero-sum continuous games. The existence of pure Nash equilibrium requires stringent conditions, posing a major challenge for this problem. To circumvent this difficulty, we examine the problem of identifying a mixed Nash equilibrium, where strategies are randomized and characterized by probability distributions over continuous <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://domains.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this end, we propose PArticle-based Primal-dual ALgorithm (PAPAL) tailored for a weakly entropy-regularized min-max optimization over probability distributions. This algorithm employs the stochastic movements of particles to represent the updates of random strategies for the $\epsilon$-mixed Nash equilibrium. We offer a comprehensive convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm, demonstrating its effectiveness. In contrast to prior research that attempted to update particle importance without movements, PAPAL is the first implementable particle-based algorithm accompanied by non-asymptotic quantitative convergence results, running time, and sample complexity guarantees. Our framework contributes novel insights into the particle-based algorithms for continuous min-max optimization in the general non-convex non-concave setting.

Inapproximability of NP-Complete Variants of Nash Equilibrium

Abstract:In recent work of Hazan and Krauthgamer (SICOMP 2011), it was shown that finding an $\eps$-approximate Nash equilibrium with near-optimal value in a two-player game is as hard as finding a hidden clique of size $O(\log n)$ in the random graph $G(n,1/2)$. This raises the question of whether a similar intractability holds for approximate Nash equilibrium without such constraints. We give evidence that the constraint of near-optimal value makes the problem distinctly harder: a simple algorithm finds an optimal 1/2-approximate equilibrium, while finding strictly better than 1/2-approximate equilibria is as hard as the Hidden Clique problem. This is in contrast to the unconstrained problem where more sophisticated algorithms, achieving better approximations, are known. Unlike general Nash equilibrium, which is in PPAD, optimal (maximum value) Nash equilibrium is NP-hard. We proceed to show that optimal Nash equilibrium is just one of several known NP-hard problems related to Nash equilibrium, all of which have approximate variants which are as hard as finding a planted clique. In particular, we show this for approximate variants of the following problems: finding a Nash equilibrium with value greater than $\eta$ (for any $\eta>0$, even when the best Nash equilibrium has value $1-\eta$), finding a second Nash equilibrium, and finding a Nash equilibrium with small support. Finally, we consider the complexity of approximate pure Bayes Nash equilibria in two-player games. Here we show that for general Bayesian games the problem is NP-hard. For the special case where the distribution over types is uniform, we give a quasi-polynomial time algorithm matched by a hardness result based on the Hidden Clique problem.

On a Certain NP-Complete Problem

Abstract:We intend to create new concepts aimed at finding necessary and sufficient conditions for Boolean satisfiability so that these conditions can be verified in polynomial time. Based on these conditions it will be possible to create an algorithm that determines in polynomial time whether a given Boolean formula represented in conjunctive normal form is satisfiable. The work will consist of three articles. This is the first of a planned series of these articles. In this article we introduce the concept of special decomposition of a set and the concept of special covering for a set under such a decomposition. We formulate the decision problem of existance of a special covering for a set under a special decompostition of this set. In order to determine the complexity class in which this problem is located, we study the relationship between the sat CNF problem and the problem of existence of a special covering for a set under a special decomposition of this set. The article proves that the decidability of the sat CNF problem is polynomially reduced to the problem of the existence of a special covering for a set. It is also proved that the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is polynomially reduced to the decidability of the sat CNF problem. Therefore, the mentioned problems are polynomially equivalent. And then, the problem of existence of a special covering for a set is an NP-complete problem. The conditions for the existence of special coverings for a set under special decompositions of this set will be study in the next articles.

Abstract:Games with incomplete preferences are an important model for studying rational decision-making in scenarios where players face incomplete information about their preferences and must contend with incomparable outcomes. We study the problem of computing Nash equilibrium in a subclass of two-player games played on graphs where each player seeks to maximally satisfy their (possibly incomplete) preferences over a set of temporal goals. We characterize the Nash equilibrium and prove its existence in scenarios where player preferences are fully aligned, partially aligned, and completely opposite, in terms of the well-known solution concepts of sure winning and Pareto efficiency. When preferences are partially aligned, we derive conditions under which a player needs cooperation and demonstrate that the Nash equilibria depend not only on the preference alignment but also on whether the players need cooperation to achieve a better outcome and whether they are willing to cooperate.We illustrate the theoretical results by solving a mechanism design problem for a drone delivery scenario.

Abstract:The computation of Nash equilibria has been a problem that spanned half a century that has attracted Economists, Operations Researchers, and most recently, Computer Scientists. The study of its complexity, in particular that of the two-player game, has come to a conclusion recently. It is, however, impossible without the subsuming ideas from important progresses made in the various fronts of its investigation. In this article, we present a review of the most relevant ideas, methods, and results in a way that would lead interested readers to get a full picture of the subject. We will also discuss some new issues opened up by the characterization of complexity for the two-player Nash equilibrium problem.
