Abstract:Along with the development of humanistic psychology, the affective factors in education are gaining more and more importance. The paper introduces three major affective factors in second language acquisition, which are self-esteem, motivation and anxiety. With the expectation to play the positive role of affec tive factors in second language acquisition and diminish its negative influ ences on education, and exert the intuitive subjectivity to study, this paper analyses its application on teaching from the perspective of teachers, as well as its implication on studying from the students’ perspective.

Abstract:The significant role that affective factors play in foreign language teaching and learning has already been widely accepted.However,there has been little empirical research concerning the application of affective factors in actual teaching.The current paper aims to attain a general picture of how affective factors are applied in college English teaching,and to see where the weaknesses and problems lie.A questionnaire survey was therefore carried out among 800 students and 60 teachers from four universities (two key universities and two ordinary ones).Finally,based on the findings,some suggestions for improvement are provided.

Abstract:The focus of current foreign language teaching is to cultivate students' cultural awareness. The ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to cultivate students' intercultural communicative competence, and cultural empathy competence is the most important factor in the intercultural communicative competence system, which will directly affect the quality, effect and process of intercultural communication. In the process of intercultural communication, people begin to realize that the cultural empathy competence is the most important part of the intercultural communication system, which will directly affect the quality, effect and process of intercultural communication. In English teaching, the education and training of cultural empathy competence is an indispensable part in cultivating students' comprehensive English competence. Reaching the ideal state of empathy is not an overnight process, but a long process of psychological adaptation and behavioral identification, which determines the nature of difficulty and long-term of cultural empathy. Therefore, in English teaching, teachers should not only teach language knowledge, but also impart cultural knowledge, guide students to realize the differences and similarities between Chinese and western cultures, cultivate students' intercultural communication awareness through multiple ways, and skillfully guide students to carry out cultural empathy, so as to improve the effect of English teaching.

Abstract:Affective factors play a significant role in language teaching and learning. Attitude and motivation are two of them which affect students to learn English well. In a sense, a good teaching is based on having a better understanding of attitude and motivation. This paper discusses the relations between attitude and motivation, analyzes the factors which cause the lack of positive attitudes and learning motivation of non-English majors and puts forward corresponding ways to guide students to have positive attitudes and stimulate their motivation to learn English.

Abstract:The research attempts to explore the present state of the intercultural sensitivity of today’s English teachers in senior high schools, and find out the underlying factors responsible for it in the domain of high school TEFL(teaching English as foreign language). 35 English teachers from different senior high schools participated in the study. The results presented that the majority of English teachers had a relatively high intercultural sensitivity, but the practice of culture teaching were not quite qualified. The activities of culture teaching are quite monotonous. For teachers, Lack of training and guide and heavy burden of language teaching are the major difficulties in culture teaching.
Cultural Competence in Chinese Language Education: Discussing the Importance of Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Background and Aim: Cultural competence plays a significant role in successful language education. Studies have shown that culturally sensitive pedagogy enables teachers to connect language to an accurate cultural context, preventing misappropriate language use. This study examined the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Materials and Methods: Data was collected using observation, interviews, and systematic reviews of academic journals. The classroom observation was selected because it provides first-hand data about how educators teach the Chinese language. The researchers also observed the impact of cultural awareness on teaching methods and outcomes. Interviews were conducted using open-ended questionnaires to obtain the benefits of cultural awareness and sensitivity in teaching the Chinese language. The systematic review helped in extracting data from the previous studies. The inductive and deductive thematic analyses were conducted based on the guidance from Byram’s intercultural competence framework. Results: The findings showed that cultural awareness and sensitivity are important in teaching the Chinese language because they improve critical cultural awareness, linguistic competency, and the ability of language educators to translate and communicate effectively. The various elements of linguistic competency that teachers demonstrate include comprehension, connotation, convention, and conditioning. Conclusion: Cultural awareness and sensitivity also help language educators empower learners and enhance their capacity to become better intercultural communicators. The paper suggests that Chinese language teachers should make regular visits to China to enhance their cultural awareness. Educators should also try various strategies, including double translation, comparison, and situational settings to integrate cultural awareness into their teachings.

Abstract:With the further development of economic globalization, China has built cooperative relationship with other countries around the world. Therefore, foreign language talents in China play an essential role in cultural and trade exchanges. Training language talents to effectively adapt to foreign exchange policy also becomes important to China. Researching motivation change in learning enables the government to scientifically improve teaching quality. It is one of the most efficient and effective methods to cultivate high-quality talents. This study aims to find out the critical factors influencing students' motivational change. Based on Keller's ARCS model of motivation and Dörnyei's Three-level motivational theory, we divided influencing factors into 14 elements. After factor analysis, it showed group-specific motivational components, course-specific components and teacher-specific components are the most critical factors affecting motivation level in language learning. In 2018, National Standard for Teaching Quality of Foreign Language and Literature was published, to adjust course setting and strengthen teachers team building to improve teaching quality. However, even after two years of the above modification, the author found out there are still problems in higher education which badly influence student's learning motivation. This study helps improving teaching quality, promoting foreign language learning and cultivating language talents.

Abstract:In this paper, Chen & Starosta’s theory on intercultural sensitivity is introduced as the theoretical framework. The paper mainly focuses on the assessment of intercultural sensitivity of non-English majors in five dimensions with the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale designed by Chen & Starosta. That is intercultural engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, interaction enjoyment and interaction attentiveness. Then, the author makes a further questionnaire survey to find out the obstacles of non-English majors to the effective intercultural communication and the factors affecting their intercultural sensitivity. Through the analysis of college students’ performance on intercultural sensitivity, it is conducive to providing some implications for foreign language teaching so as to further enhance students’ intercultural communication ability and awareness.

Abstract:One of the significant courses in Chinese universities is English. This course is usually taught by a foreign language instructor. There will, however, necessarily be some communication hurdles between “foreign language teachers” and “native students.” This research presents an emotion recognition method for foreign language teachers in order to eliminate communication barriers between teachers and students and improve student learning efficiency. We discovered four factors of emotion recognition through literature analysis: smile, eye contact, gesture, and tone. We believe that differences in foreign language teachers’ performance in these four areas will have an impact on students’ emotion recognition and, as a result, on their learning efficiency. The influence of the foreign language teacher’s eye contact and gestures is larger (the weight of a single variable accounted for 30% or more) in the decision whether can improve the students’ classroom learning efficiency, according to 43 of the questionnaire data analysis. The second is the tone and smile (the weight of a single variable accounted for between 10 and 20%). Our research contributes to the body of knowledge on emotion recognition in university foreign language teachers by presenting a practical method for recognizing emotion in foreign language teachers. We recommend that college foreign language teachers pay attention to eye and gesture communication with students in English classrooms based on the findings. By enriching the style of emotional expression in class, college language teachers, particularly foreign language teachers, can improve communication, and connection with students.

Abstract:The paper discusses the status quo of the English culture teaching and learning in Chinese colleges. In the pedagogical level, most foreign language teachers have very vague idea of what the culture should be and what should be taught in terms of English culture. Lacking in the principled methodology in promoting students’ intercultural awareness, teachers either turn deaf to the new trend or frustrated by the communicative approach, somehow falling back to the more traditional but effective grammar-translation approach. The changing scenario of language teaching has constituted new challenges for the English educators in China. The paper proposes that more research should be channeled to the research of the paradigm of the English as an International Language (EIL) through intercultural awareness.

Abstract:Since 2004, China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language began dispatching international Chinese language teachers to countries in need around the world, the teachers have made important contributions to international Chinese language education and cultural communication. International Chinese language teachers are bound to face various discomfort and difficulties when working and living in a cultural environment different from their own, which affects both their teaching and personal life.
