Abstract:A novel fluorogenic receptor 1 was prepared by the reaction of thiosemicarbazide with 1-naphthaldehyde. Based on in situ-formed 1–Fe(III) complexes having the specific binding affinity for F− anions, this sensory system allows rapid recognition and quantitative detection of fluoride in neutral aqueous media in an ‘off–on’ fashion. The fluoride measurement method not only exhibits a low detection limit but also has strong anti-interference ability to common coexisting ions, as evidenced by competitive experiments.

Abstract:We present a new time-resolved chemosensor for the detection of Ba2+ ions. Our sensor is based on an iridium(III) compound with dual (fluorescent and phosphorescent) emission. The nature of the luminescent response of the sensor depends on its state; specifically, the phosphorescent emission of the free state at long wavelengths is strongly suppressed, while that of the Ba2+-chelated compound is strongly enhanced. Furthermore, the residual phosphorescent emission of the free compound decays with two short decay constants, τ 1 free ∼ 3.5 ns (88%) and τ 2 free ∼ 209 ns (12%), while the chelated compound decays with two long decay constants, τ 1ch ∼ 429 ns (21%) and τ 2 ch ∼ 1128 ns (76%). This exceptional behaviour, supported by quantum chemical calculations, allows a time- based separation between the signal of the free and the chelated species. Among other applications, our sensor could be the basis of a Ba2+ tagging detector for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in xenon.

Abstract:A new phosphorescent iridium(III) complex [Ir(Bpq)2(bpy)](+)PF6(-) based on cyclometalated ligands (Bpq) containing a dimesitylboryl group was synthesized and characterized by photophysical and electrochemical studies. The excited-state properties of Bpq and [Ir(Bpq)2(bpy)](+)PF6(-) were investigated using molecular orbital calculations. Importantly, both Bpq and [Ir(Bpq)2(bpy)](+)PF6(-) could be used as highly selective chemosensors for a fluoride anion (F(-)) detected by the naked eye, owing to the interaction of the dimesitylboryl group (BMes2) with F(-). For the Bpq ligand, a red shift of the emission spectrum was observed upon the addition of F(-), which could be attributed to an excited-state switch from a pi-pi* transition to a charge-transfer transition upon complexation with F(-). The addition of F(-) to a solution of [Ir(Bpq)2(bpy)](+)PF6(-) induced a change in the solution color from yellow to orange-red and phosphorescent quenching, indicating that [Ir(Bpq)2(bpy)](+)PF6(-) could act as an excellent ON-OFF-type phosphorescent chemosensor for F(-).

Abstract:Fluoride ion is an anion with the high electronegativity and the smallest radius. It has important application in all aspects of daily life. In this paper, based on the cleavage of Si-O bond induced by fluoride ions, a novel derivative of perylene B which contains four silicon oxygen bond was designed and synthesized, and this fluorescent chemosensor could recognize F- with good selectivity and high sensitivity. The probe molecule had a fast response time for F- and the sensing procedure could be completed in about 1 min, and the detection limit of F- of the probe molecule B reached 3.5x10(-8) mol.L-1.

Abstract:Emissive lanthanide ions are considered as luminescent species or optical probes for the analytes in ambient conditions or even cellular environment. But a variety of factors determine the stability of photo-luminescent signals due to the excitation sources, statistical errors or the selection of solvents. In this way, ratiometric assays effectively circumvent such problem and lead to more sensitive and reliable results. Herein, an organic-inorganic hybrid material has been developed with the europium complex as the core and the terbium species can be attached onto the surface of silica host. As for the evaluation of the internal structure, the terbium complex has been integrated into the hybrid network via weak forces and its sensitizing moiety will be easily attacked by Lewis acid-base interactions. In a different manner, the europium complex has been shielded from perturbation due to the protection of the outside silica shells. Such sharp difference in response to fluoride induces drastic signal changes and the conversion of binding process between fluoride and molecular receptors (boronic group) into readable optical outputs has afforded the lower detection limit for F- as 0.17 μM. In addition, the intracellular uptake and distribution of the hybrid material have been explored.

Abstract:The detection of fluoride anion (F−) has recently attracted much attention, because F− is highly relevant to health and environmental issues. A novel Y-shaped fluorophore with an imidazole ring core, (E,E′-4,4′-[(2,2′-bis(ethene-2,1-diyl)dibenzoate)-(2-(4-(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl) (1), was synthesized and used as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for fluoride anion. Upon addition of fluoride anion, the emission color of 1 turned from green to brown under ambient conditions, owing to deprotonation of the imidazole core. Importantly, upon complexation with fluoride anion, an obvious variation in the maximum wavelength of the two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF peak) was observed from 490 to 565nm, indicating that 1 is an excellent ratiometric TPEF-sensor for fluoride anion.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:A new double Schiff base, carbazole, and diaminomaleonitrile-based chemosensor for Fe3+ with high sensitivity and selectivity was designed and synthesized. Addition of only Fe3+ ions induced the fluorescence quenching of the chemosensor in DMF solution. The chemosensor formed a 1:1 complex with Fe3+ with the high binding constant of 7.98·10–6 M–1. The chemosensor displayed low detection limit (3.75·10–8 M) and fast response time (15 s) to Fe3+.

Abstract:A novel Eu3+ complex coordinated by polymers with beta-diketone pendant groups (Eu3+-PDKMA) has been synthesized for Cu2+ cation and acid-base vapor detections. Its sensitive and selective response to Cu2+ is confirmed by fluorescence quenching of characteristic emission of Eu3+ at 612 nm wavelength. The fluorescence intensity of Eu3+-PDKMA obeys linear relationship at the presence of Cu2+ with the concentration in the order of 10(-7) mol L-1. The detection limit of Cu2+ is as low as 2.0 x 10(-8) mol L-1 at natural pH, which makes Eu3+-PDKMA an excellent luminescent sensor. Portable strips containing Eu3+-PDKMA can be easily prepared to detect Cu2+ in aqueous solution. Moreover, the same strips can also be used to recognize and sense acidic and basic environments by naked eye. The red emission can be switched "off" and "on" when the strips contact acid and base vapors, respectively. The produced strips exhibit relatively fast response time less than 10 s, and good reusability over 10 times. The Eu3+-PDKMA materials are promising in biological and environmental applications.

Abstract:A novel polydentate type ligand derived from N(2),N(6)-bis(4,4-diethoxy-9-oxo-3-oxa-8,10-diaza-4-siladodecan-12-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide (L) has been designed, and it played essential roles in the assembly of new organic-inorganic functional materials. First, its multiple amide groups would coordinate to lanthanide ions firmly and transfer the absorbed energy to both Eu(III) and Tb(III) simultaneously. Second, the hydrogen-bond donor units showed strong affinity to guest anion (F(-)). Third, the two silylated arms could induce the formation of sol-gel derived siloxane hybrid materials. Following this idea, two lanthanide luminescent amorphous particles (ASNs-Eu and ASNs-Tb) have been prepared for the recognition of fluoride ions. Further modification of the synthesis method and transformation to mesoporous network (MSNs-Eu and MSNs-Tb) led to much enhanced thermostabilities, larger specific surface area (from 78.5 to 515 m(2) g(-1) for Eu(III); 89.6 to 487 m(2) g(-1) for Tb(III)), and lower detection limits (2.5 × 10(-8) M for MSNs-Eu and 3.4 × 10(-8) M for MSNs-Tb) for the fluoride ion.
