Abstract:In this article, applying variational technique as well as critical point theory, we establish a series of criteria to ensure the existence and multiplicity of nontrivial periodic solutions to a second-order nonlinear partial difference equation. Our results generalize some known results. Moreover, numerical stimulations are presented to illustrate applications of our major findings.

Abstract:Bulletin of Mathematical Sciences, Ahead of Print. Due to the essential difficulty of establishing an appropriate variational framework on a suitable working space, how to apply the critical point theory for showing the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions of continuous-time difference equations remains a completely open problem. New ideas including gluing arguments are introduced in this work to overcome such a difficulty. This enables us to employ the critical point theory to construct uncountably many periodic solutions for a class of superlinear continuous-time difference equations without assuming symmetry properties on the nonlinear terms. The obtained solutions are piecewise differentiable in some cases, distinguishing continuous-time difference equations from ordinary differential equations qualitatively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that the critical point theory has been used for such types of problems. Our work may open an avenue for studying discrete nonlinear systems with continuous time via the critical point theory.

Abstract:In this paper, a nonperiodic discrete nonlinear equation with Jacobi operators is considered. By using the critical point theory, we establish some new sufficient conditions on the existence and multiplicity of homoclinic solutions. Recent results are generalized and significantly improved. Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity of solutions for two-point boundary value problems for even order ordinary differential equation. By using the critical point theory and the property of projective operator, we establish some conditions on the nonlinearity which guarantee that the nonlinear Hammerstein integral equation with quasi-positive definite kernel has at least one solution, two nontrivial solutions and finite pairs of solutions, respectively. As an application, we get the corresponding results for two-point boundary value problems for even order ordinary differential equation. Moreover, an example is presented to illustrate our main results.

By the fixed point theorem and the Hölder inequality, we study the existence of symmetric positive solutions for the above difference equation with sum form boundary conditions.

Abstract:Many dynamical systems have impulsive dynamical behaviors due to abrupt changes at certain instants during the evolution process. The mathematical description of these phenomena leads to impulsive differential equations. In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity of solutions for fourth-order impulsive differential equations. By using the variational methods and critical point theory, we give some new criteria to guarantee that the impulsive problem has at least one nontrivial solution, infinitely many distinct solutions under some different conditions, respectively. Some examples are given in this paper to illustrate the feasibilities of our main results.

Abstract:In the present paper, we apply the method of invariant sets of descending flow to establish a series of criteria to ensure that a second-order nonlinear functional difference equation with periodic boundary conditions possesses at least one trivial solution and three nontrivial solutions. These nontrivial solutions consist of sign-changing solutions, positive solutions and negative solutions. Moreover, as an application of our theoretical results, an example is elaborated. Our results generalize and improve some existing ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions for a class of second-order impulsive differential equation. By using the critical point theorem of Y. Jabri and an even functional theorem, we give some new criteria to guarantee that the impulsive differential equation has at least one solution, infinitely many solutions under the assumption that a nonlinear term satisfies sublinear, superlinear, asymptotically linear, respectively. Some recent results are extended and conditions of assumptions are simplified. Finally, some examples are presented to illustrate our main results.

By using the theory of the fixed point index, we investigate the effect of σ2(T) on the existence and nonexistence of positive solution for the above system in sublinear cases. The results obtained are even new for the special cases of difference system and differential system, as well as in the general time scale setting.

Abstract:The existence of three solutions for nonlinear operator equations is established via index theory for linear self-adjoint operator equations, critical point reduction method, and three critical points theorems obtained by Brezis-Nirenberg, Ricceri, and Averna-Bonanno. Applying the results to second-order Hamiltonian systems satisfying generalized periodic boundary conditions or Sturm-Liouville boundary conditions and elliptic partial differential equations satisfying Dirichlet boundary value conditions, we obtain some new theorems concerning the existence of three solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a two-point boundary value problem involving p -Laplacian and its relationship with the associated discrete ones. Specifically, by using discrete variational methods, we first obtain a sequence of positive solutions for the associated discrete two-point boundary value problems corresponding to different step lengths. Then, utilizing the sequence of positive solutions, we construct a sequence of continuous functions which can be shown to be precompact. Finally, we prove that the limit function of the convergent subsequence is the desired positive solution. In particular, our result covers the cases when the nonlinear function in the equation is -superlinear and asymptotically -linear.
