Abstract:The creation of new cluster building blocks, as well as new ligand coordination modes, are among the most effective ways to develop new framework materials. Yet, large and chiral clusters are both difficult to create and relatively few. Here, by studying the competing coordination of different azolates against carboxylate and combined carboxylate/phenolate, it is shown that the impact of azolates in the MOF-74 synthesis system differs dramatically, leading to the synthesis of MOF-74, UTSA-74, and CPM-72 for 2-methylimidazole, 1,2,4-triazole, and 1,2,3-triazole, respectively. The new CPM-72 contains a novel chiral Zn-12 triazolate cluster, which features a trigonal-prismatic Zn-6 core inside an octahedral Zn-6 shell. In contrast with MOF-74 with fully deprotonated and symmetrically bonded 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4DOBDC), H4DOBDC adopts an unusual nonsymmetric bonding mode in CPM-72 (carboxylate only at one end and carboxylate/phenolate at the other), resulting in a highly porous and intrinsically chiral 3D framework. The nonsymmetric bonding mode by H4DOBDC, apparently dictated by the chiral Zn-12 cluster, can be replicated with 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid (H3OBDC), leading to the synthesis of porous isoreticular CPM-73.

Abstract:Three five-component architectures, compounds 3, 4, and 5 were obtained by self-assembly of tripodal 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl )-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (6) and 1,3,5-tris(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)benzene (7) ligands with silver(I) salts. The structures of these novel complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The results of structural analysis indicate that these frameworks have same M3L2 components, but different structures. Compounds 3 and 4 are both M3L2 type cage-like complexes, while the 5 is an open trinuclear complex. The complex 3 is a cylindrical cage with simultaneous inclusion of a perchlorate anion inside of the cage as a guest molecule. Such guests can be exchanged for other anions through the open edge of the cage as evidenced by crystal structure of 4. The results demonstrate that the molecular M3L2 type cage can act as a host for anions and provide a nice example of supramolecular architectures with interesting properties and possible applications.

Abstract:A novel cake-like complex, Zn-3(tbib)(2)Cl-6. 3DMF . 2H(2)O [tbib = 1,3,5-tris(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)benzene], was synthesized by self-assembly of tripodal ligand tbib with zinc(II) chloride. The X-ray crystal structural analysis indicates that the framework is a flattened M3L2 type cage-like complex in which the tbib ligand has a cis, trans, trans conformation.

The paramagnetic metal centers are well separated in each case, leading to weak antiferromagnetic coupling or non-existent spin exchange.

Abstract:The properties of supramolecular structures are highly dependent on their metal-centered building blocks and organic linkers, thus the search for novel systems will lead to new functions and applications for these unique assemblies. Here, two discrete triangular trimetallic sandwich building blocks were developed to construct supramolecular assemblies through coordination-driven self-assembly with organosulfur ligands. A series of tubelike (Tr2Pd3)4L6 assemblies (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl ring) were obtained from a discrete triangular tripalladium sandwich complex with bifunctional organosulfur ligands. By replacing the metal centers of the platinum analogue, the self-assembly process resulted in the clean formation of (Tr2Pt3)2L3 triple helicates instead of tubelike species. The trimetallic sandwich building blocks were also shown to form face-capped (Tr2M3)4L4 (M = Pd or Pt) tetrahedral cages when trifunctional organosulfur ligands were used. The supramolecular assemblies were comprehensively analyzed by X-ray crystallography. A metal-cluster-induced structural transformation between (Tr2Pd3)4L4 tubes and (Tr2Pt3)2L3 triple helicates was observed. Furthermore, the face-capped (Tr2Pd3)4L4 cage possesses a tetrahedral cavity allowing the encapsulation of a series of guests.

Abstract:By using tridentate ligand 4(3-pyridinyl)-1,2,4-triazole (pytrz), cage-like complexes of {[Cu(mu(2)-pytrz)(2)]- (ClO4)(SO4)0.5 center dot C2H5OH-0.25H(2)O} (1), {[Cu-3(mu(3)-pytrz)(4)(mu(2)-Cl)(2)(H2O)(2)]-(ClO4)(2)Cl-2 center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (2), and {[Cu-3(mu(3-)pytrz)(3)(mu(3)-O)(H2O)(3)](ClO4)(2.5)- (BF4)(1.5)center dot 5.25H(2)O}(n) (3) have been synthesized with different copper(II) salts. Complex I represents the second example of a M6L12 metal-organic octahedron with an overall T-h, symmetry. Complex 2 is constructed from a 3 8 cage-building unit (CBU) and each CBU connects six neighboring cages to give the first 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) based on octahedral M6L12. Complex 3 is built from Cu-24-(pytrz)(12) CBUs with the trinuclear copper clusters serving as second building units (SBUs) and decorating each corner of the M24L12 polyhedron. The Cu-24(pytrz)(12) building unit is linked by extra ligands to give an extended 3D framework that has the formula Cu-24(pytrZ)(2), and possesses a CaB6 topology. The mixed anions ClO4- and BF4- in 3 are both included in the inner cavity of the cage and can be completely exchanged by ClO4- through the open windows of the cage, as evidenced by the crystal structure of the 3D MOF {[Cu-3(mu(3)-pytrz)(3)(mu(3)-O)- (H2O)(3)](ClO4)(4)center dot 4.5H(2)O}(n) (4). Complex 4 can also be synthesized when employing I as a precursor in an extensive study of the anion-exchange reaction. This represents the first successful conversion of a discrete cage into a 3D coordination network based on a cage structure. Complex 2 remains invariable during anion-exchange reactions because uncoordinated Cl- ions are located in the comparatively small inner cavity.
A Family of Cubane Cobalt and Nickel Clusters: Syntheses, Structures and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:Five tetranuclear complexes with the composition of [M4(L)4(μ3-OMe)4(MeOH)4], (M=Ni (1) or Co (2), HL is 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (Hdchb); M=Ni (3) or Co (4), HL is 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzaldehyde (Hhmb); M=Ni (5), HL is 5-bromo-2-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (Hbhb)), were prepared by reaction of salt perchloride hexahydrate with 2-hydroxy-benzaldehyde ramification under solvothermal conditions. All compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Compounds 1–5 have tetranuclear clusters with a cubane topology in which the metal ions and the oxygen atoms from the methanol ligands occupying the alternate vertices of the cubane. The {M4O4} cores display dominant ferromagnetic interactions from the nature of the binding modes through μ3-OCH3−. No single-molecule magnets (SMMs) behaviors have been observed in complexes 1–3 and 5. In contrast, compound 4 has been observed obviously slow relaxation for the S4 site symmetry and exhibits the behavior of SMMs. The results further support that judicious choice of harmonious mixed ligands provides the means to create a rich variety of new isolated individual {M4O4} cubic system and allows a systematic magnetic study of the effect of intermolecular interactions and correlation.

Abstract:In this study, we designed and synthesized three conformation-adaptive Pd2L4- and Pd3L6-type coordination cages based on three dihydrophenazine-based ligands with different lengths. Interestingly, the shorter ligands L1 and L2 self-assembled into Pd2L4-type coordination cages while the longer L3 formed Pd3L6-type one, mainly driven by the anion template effect. All coordination cages were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their structural conformations underwent great changes compared with those of their corresponding ligands. Moreover, the conformational changes also significantly affected their photophysical and electrochemical properties which were distinct from their parent ligands.

Abstract:Using the tricyano precursor, (Bu4N)[(Tp)Fe(CN)3] (Tp = Tris(pyrazolyl) hydroborate) (1), four new tetranuclear clusters, [(Tp)Fe(CN)3Cu(Tp)]2.2H2O (2), [(Tp)Fe(CN)3Cu(bpca)]2.4H2O (3) (bpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amidate anion), [(Tp)Fe(CN)3Ni(tren)]2(ClO4)2.2H2O (4) (tren = tris(2-amino)ethylamine), and [(Tp)Fe(CN)3Ni(bipy)2]2[(Tp)Fe(CN)3]2.6H2O (5) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The four clusters possess similar square structures, where FeIII and MII (M = CuII or NiII) ions alternate at the rectangle corners. There exist intermolecular - stacking interactions through pyrazolyl groups of Tp- ligands in complexes 2 and 4, which lead to 1D chain structures. Complex 5 shows a 3D network structure through the coexistence of - stacking effects and hydrogen-bonding interactions. Magnetic studies show intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions in all four clusters. The exchange parameters are +11.91 and +1.38 cm(-1) for clusters 2 and 3, respectively, while uniaxial molecular anisotropy can be detected in complex 3 due to the distorted core in its molecular structure. Complex 4 has a ground state of S = 3 and shows SMM behavior with an effective energy barrier of U = 18.9 cm(-1). Unusual spin-glass-like dynamic relaxations are observed for complex 5.

Abstract:Reaction of [Cu(PPh3)2(MeCN)2]ClO4 (1) and Sn(edt)2 (edt = ethane-1,2-dithiolate) in dichloromethane afforded a novel compound [Sn3Cu4(S2C2H4)6(mu3-O)(PPh3)4](ClO4)2 x 3 CH2Cl2 (2), which is the first example of the heptanuclear Sn(IV)-Cu(I) oxosulfur complex with a bottle-shaped cluster core. Complex 2 gives a blue-green luminescent emission in the solid state. Crystallographic data for 2: C87H90Cl8Cu4O9P4S12Sn3, trigonal, space group R3, M = 2682.02, a = 18.156(2) A, b = 18.156(2) A, c = 54.495(10) A, gamma = 120 degrees, V = 15558(4) A3, Z = 6 (T = 130.15 K).

Abstract:Reactions of a new asymmetric ligand, 1-(1-imidazolyl)-4-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (IIMB), with various metal [Cd(II), Mn(II), Zn(II)] salts led to the formation of molecular, one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) architectures [Cd(IIMB)2(H2O)(SO4)]·7.5H2O 1, [Cd(IIMB)2Cl2]·H2O 2, [Cd(IIMB)4(H2O)2](NO3)2·5H2O 3, [Cd(IIMB)(OAc)2]·H2O 4, [Mn(IIMB)2(SO4)(H2O)]·8.2H2O 5, [Mn(IIMB)4(H2O)2]Cl2·5H2O 6 and [Zn(IIMB)2]4(NO3)8·13.5H2O 7. All the structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Both compounds 1 and 5 with sulfate anion are 2D polycatenanes formed by the interlocking of 1D double-stranded chains, while 2 and 4 with chloride and acetate anions are 1D chains. The results provide nice examples of topologies of metal-organic frameworks controlled by the counter anions. Interestingly, 3 and 6 are discrete molecular complexes with monometallic cores and form 2D networks through strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Complex 7, obtained under the same conditions as 3, is a 1D tubular chain. The structural difference between 3 and 7 suggests the metal ions also have a significant effect on the construction of supramolecular architectures. Furthermore, the photoluminescence properties of these compounds were investigated in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract:By using a flexible multidentate carboxylate linker 4,4',4 ''-(((2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl) tris(methylene))tris(oxy))tribenzoic acid (H3L), four novel coordination polymers [Mn7L4(DMF)(4)(H2O)(4)Cl-2]center dot 10(H2O) (1), [Cd7L4(DMF)(4)(H2O)(4)Cl-2]center dot 10(H2O) (2), [Co7L4(DMF)(4)(H2O)(4)(OH)(2)]center dot 11(H2O) (3), and [Co4L2(DMF)(2)(H2O)(4)Cl-2]center dot 4(DMF)center dot 3(H2O) (4) were obtained and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric and magnetic studies. Compounds 1-3 are isomorphous, built upon a 12-connecting linear M-7 cluster and a 3-connecting L3- ligand to form a polycatenated 3D network. 4 comprises of 3-connecting trigonal M-2 clusters and L3- linkers to form a 2D layered structure with hcb topology. The magnetic studies of the M-7-cluster compounds 1 and 3 show the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the M2+ ions in 1 and 3.

Abstract:Using a novel flexible achiral ligand, 3-(5-(pyridin-4-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)benzoic acid (HL), four metal(II)-complexes formulated as ZnL2·2H2O (1), CdL2(H2O)2·8H2O (2) and ML2(H2O)·H2O (M = Co 3 and Ni 4) have been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1, 3 and 4 all feature a uninodal 2D layer with a 4(4)-sql topology, and two such (4,4) nets interpenetrate in a parallel manner. Complex 2 exhibits a similar 4(4)-sql topology, but no interpenetration is observed in complex 2. Among the four complexes, only complex 1 is a homochiral network, which is evidenced by the CD spectrum. In complex 1, packing of the 2D layers generates a 41 screw axis along the c direction, and two-fold axes along the a and b directions, respectively. In complex 2, the Zn(II) center lies about an inversion center, giving rise to the centrosymmetric structure of complex 2. In complexes 3 and 4, packing of the 2D units generates a 21 screw axis along the c direction in the two complexes, and an inversion center is found between two neighboring 2-fold interpenetrated layers. The work indicates that the chirality of the space group for the homochiral complex 1 comes from the supramolecular packing of the 2D layers.
Rational Design and Self-Assembly of Molecular Squares Featuring Cp*M (M = Rh, Ir) Vertices Bridged by Phenanthroline-Derived Ligands

Abstract:Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of three tetranuclear complexes, [(Cp*Rh)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (la, HL1 = 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-imidazo [4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline), [(Cp*Ir)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (1b), and [(Cp*Rh)(L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (2, HL2 = 2-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo [4,5-f] [1,10]-phenanthroline). Owing to the precise design of the phenanthroline-derived ligands, these complexes exhibit perfect square shaped structures with side lengths of 13.53, 13.57, and 17.95 angstrom, respectively. These molecules orderly align and assemble into square-shaped, one-dimensional nanotubes. The molecular structures and arrangement of the nanotubes were evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Solution behavior was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis were also employed to characterize these complexes.
