Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis: A mini-series of 5 cases

Abstract:Objective To review the diagnosis and treatment of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP). Methods The records of 5 children with XGP managed in our institution from August 1990 to July 2003 were reviewed. Results All patients presented with a long history of fever, tender abdominal mass which were shown as heteroechoic mass on ultrasound, anemia, and high ESR.There were four patients with multiple low density mass on CT, one patient with WBC in urine, one with positive Proteus vulgaris culture from urine, and three with failure of dye excretion during intravenous pyelogram. Conclusions Clinical features of fever、tender abdominal mass、anemia、high ESR、WBC in urine、positive culture from urine and CT scanning are helpful in the diagnosis XGP.
