Abstract:This paper develops a general approach to the derivation of the boundary conditions for hydrodynamic equations for charged and neutral plasma components. It includes both a well-known classical case for pure diffusion, and considers the expressions for diffusion and drift together - for an absorbing (neutralizing) wall with partial reflection and the possible emission of plasma components. Some unclear and controversial terms found in the existing literature are clarified. Several examples of applications of the results, which illustrate the properties of boundary conditions for electrons and ions, are calculated and analyzed.

Abstract:An analytic solution is obtained for free-boundary, high-beta equilibria in large aspect ratio tokamaks with a nearly circular plasma boundary. In the absence of surface currents at the plasma-vacuum interface, the free-boundary equilibrium solution introduces constraints arising from the need to couple to an external vacuum field which is physically realizable with a reasonable set of external field coils. This places a strong constraint on the pressure profiles that are consistent with a given boundary shape at high εβp. The equilibrium solution also provides information on the flux surface topology. The plasma is bounded by a separatrix. Increasing the plasma pressure at fixed total current causes the plasma aperture to decrease in a manner that is described.

Abstract:In a long mean-free-path plasma where temperature anisotropy can be sustained, the parallel heat flux has two components with one associated with the parallel thermal energy and the other the perpendicular thermal energy. Due to the large deviation of the distribution function from local Maxwellian in an open field line plasma with low collisionality, the conventional perturbative calculation of the parallel heat flux closure in its local or non-local form is no longer applicable. Here, a non-perturbative calculation is presented for a collisionless plasma in a two-dimensional flux expander bounded by absorbing walls. Specifically, closures of previously unfamiliar form are obtained for ions and electrons, which relate two distinct components of the species parallel heat flux to the lower order fluid moments such as density, parallel flow, parallel and perpendicular temperatures, and the field quantities such as the magnetic field strength and the electrostatic potential. The plasma source and boundary condition at the absorbing wall enter explicitly in the closure calculation. Although the closure calculation does not take into account wave-particle interactions, the results based on passing orbits from steady-state collisionless drift-kinetic equation show remarkable agreement with fully kinetic-Maxwell simulations. As an example of the physical implications of the theory, the parallel heat flux closures are found to predict a surprising observation in the kinetic-Maxwell simulation of the 2D magnetic flux expander problem, where the parallel heat flux of the parallel thermal energy flows from low to high parallel temperature region.

Abstract:We investigate the general plasma-vacuum interface problems for the ideal incompressible MHD equations with or without surface tension and prove their nonlinear local well-posedness in standard Sobolev spaces under either non-zero surface tension or the stability condition that the magnetic fields are everywhere non-collinear on the interface. In particular, the results show that both capillary forces and tangential magnetic fields can stabilize the motion of the plasma-vacuum interfaces. Moreover, the vanishing surface tension limit results are established under the Rayleigh-Taylor sign condition or the non-collinearity condition. All these results hold with no graph assumption on the free interface.

Abstract:Magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium schemes with toroidal plasma flows and scrape-off layer are developed for the ‘divertor-type’ and ‘limiter-type’ free boundaries in the tokamak cylindrical coordinate. With a toroidal plasma flow, the flux functions are considerably different under the isentropic and isothermal assumptions. The effects of the toroidal flow on the magnetic axis shift are investigated. In a high beta plasma, the magnetic shifts due to the toroidal flow are almost the same for both the isentropic and isothermal cases and are about 0.04a 0 (a 0 is the minor radius) for M 0 = 0.2 (the toroidal Alfvén Mach number on the magnetic axis). In addition, the X-point is slightly shifted upward by 0.0125a 0. But the magnetic axis and the X-point shift due to the toroidal flow may be neglected because M 0 is usually less than 0.05 in a real tokamak. The effects of the toroidal flow on the plasma parameters are also investigated. The high toroidal flow shifts the plasma outward due to the centrifugal effect. Temperature profiles are noticeable different because the plasma temperature is a flux function in the isothermal case.

Abstract:Magnetic flux tubes or flux ropes in plasmas are important in nature and the laboratory. Axial boundary conditions strongly affect flux rope behavior, but this has never been systematically investigated. We experimentally demonstrate for the first time axial boundary conditions that are continuously varied between ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) line-tied (fixed) and non-line-tied (free). In contrast with the usual interpretation that mechanical plasma motion is MHD line-tied to a conducting boundary, we constrain boundary plasma motion to cause the line-tied condition.

Abstract:The self-consistent propagation of electrical impulses and of the accompanying distortions of the electron surface in the framework of a cold plasma model with a sharp boundary has been described with help of a derived system of two equations. The method of 'shallow water theory' has been applied for the case of bounded plasma and deriving an equation with which to link the spatial and temporal structures and evolution of the boundary curvature and the surface charge. Under certain conditions, such perturbations can propagate along the boundary without changing their shape for a long distance. An approximate analytical solution has been found, and numerical calculations have been performed. Mutual connections between basic parameters of the considered perturbations (velocity components, electrostatic field, etc.) have been presented.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the initial-boundary value problems of a Vlasov type system in a convex domain, so called the plasma-charge model, in which there are two kinds of singular sets, one caused by the boundary effect, the other by the heavy point charges. We prove the local existence of classical solutions for the case that the point charges are moving and global existence of classical solutions for the case that the point charges are fixed away from the boundary. The crucial tools are the extended Velocity Lemma for the plasma-charge model and the Pfaffelmoser's method developed by Hwang and Velázquez (2010 Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 195 763–96) and Marchioro et al (2011 Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 201 1–26). In the Pfaffelmoser's argument, a new idea is that the plasma particles can only be close to one of the singular sets during the time interval [ t − δ , t ] with small length δ, which allows us to obtain the global existence for the fixed point charges case by adapting the techniques established by Hwang et al (2013 Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 33 723–37; 2010 Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 195 763–96) and Marchioro et al (2011 Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 201 1–26) to the corresponding singular sets respectively.

Abstract:The concentration and cavitation are fundamental and physical phenomena in fluid dynamics, which can be mathematically described by delta shock waves and vacuums, respectively. In this paper, we are concerned with the Euler equations of compressible fluid flow when the state equation is governed by the extended Chaplygin gas, an important candidate for describing dark matter and dark energy. Our main objective is to apply the flux-approximation method to rigorously investigate the formation of delta shock waves and vacuums and observe the concentration and cavitation phenomena. First, the Riemann problem of the compressible fluid flow with n + 2 parameters including flux and pressure is solved. Then, two kinds of flux approximation are discussed, that is, both the flux perturbation and pressure tend to zero, or only the flux perturbation vanishes while the extended Chaplygin gas pressure partly tends to the Chaplygin gas pressure. The results indicate that different manners of flux approximation have their respective effects on the formation of delta shock waves. Finally, several numerical results are presented to confirm the theoretical analysis.

Sharp estimates, uniqueness and spikes condensation for superlinear free boundary problems arising in plasma physics

Abstract:We are concerned with Grad-Shafranov type equations, describing in dimension $N=2$ the equilibrium configurations of a plasma in a Tokamak. We obtain a sharp superlinear generalization of the result of Temam (1977) about the linear case, implying the first general uniqueness result ever for superlinear free boundary problems arising in plasma physics. Previous general uniqueness results of Beresticky-Brezis (1980) were concerned with globally Lipschitz nonlinearities. In dimension $N\geq 3$ the uniqueness result is new but not sharp, motivating the local analysis of a spikes condensation-quantization phenomenon for superlinear and subcritical singularly perturbed Grad-Shafranov type free boundary problems, implying among other things a converse of the results about spikes condensation in Flucher-Wei (1998) and Wei (2001). Interestingly enough, in terms of the "physical" global variables, we come up with a concentration-quantization-compactness result sharing the typical features of critical problems (Yamabe $N\geq 3$, Liouville $N=2$) but in a subcritical setting, the singular behavior being induced by a sort of infinite mass limit, in the same spirit of Brezis-Merle (1991).

Abstract:When the finiteness of plasma geometry is taken into account, the expression for classical skin depth is different from the one obtained for an unbounded plasma (for both the planar and cylindrical geometries). This change in the expression of the classical skin depth also changes the nonlocality parameter, which is defined as the square of the ratio of the effective mean free path to the classical skin depth. It is concluded that it is the compactness of the geometry due to the metallic boundary condition (E=0) that impacts nonlocal heating (particularly in the low-frequency regime) rather than the shape of the geometry. Abstract:We study the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for Navier–Stokes equations of steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a two-dimensional, bounded, multiply connected domain Ω = Ω_1 \Ω_2, Ω_2⊂Ω_1 . We prove that this problem has a solution if the flux ℱ of the boundary value through ∂Ω 2 is nonnegative (inflow condition). The proof of the main result uses the Bernoulli law for a weak solution to the Euler equations and the one-sided maximum principle for the total head pressure corresponding to this solution.

Abstract:Motivated by the stellar wind ejected from the upper atmosphere (Corona) of a star, we explore a boundary problem of the two-species nonlinear relativistic Vlasov-Poisson systems in the 3D half space in the presence of a constant vertical magnetic field and strong background gravity. We allow species to have different mass and charge (as proton and electron, for example). As the main result, we construct stationary solutions and establish their nonlinear dynamical asymptotic stability in time and space.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with modeling nonequilibrium phenomena in spatial domains with boundaries. The resultant models consist of hyperbolic systems of first-order partial differential equations with boundary conditions (BCs). Taking a linearized moment closure system as an example, we show that the structural stability condition and the uniform Kreiss condition do not automatically guarantee the compatibility of the models with the corresponding classical models. This motivated the generalized Kreiss condition (GKC)—a strengthened version of the uniform Kreiss condition. Under the GKC and the structural stability condition, we show how to derive the reduced BCs for the equilibrium systems as the classical models. For linearized problems, the validity of the reduced BCs can be rigorously verified. Furthermore, we use a simple example to show how thus far developed theory can be used to construct proper BCs for equations modeling nonequilibrium phenomena in spatial domains with boundaries.

Abstract:In this work we consider the free boundary inverse equilibrium problem for 3D ideal MHD. We review boundary conditions for both fixed and free boundary solutions and under what circumstances a sheet current may exist at the plasma-vacuum interface. We develop an efficient and accurate algorithm for computing the residual of these boundary conditions and use it to compute free boundary equilibria in the DESC code both in vacuum and at finite plasma beta, with and without sheet currents.

Abstract:We develop a new method for describing the dynamics of 3-dimensional thermal plasmas. Using a piecewise constant 1-particle distribution, we reduce the Vlasov equation to a generalized Lorentz force equation for a family of vector fields encoding the discontinuity. By applying this equation to longitudinal electrostatic plasma oscillations, and coupling it to Maxwell's equations, we obtain a limit on the magnitude of the electric field in relativistic thermal plasma oscillations. We derive an upper bound on the limit and discuss its applicability in a background magnetic field.

Multilevel Monte Carlo methods for the Grad-Shafranov free boundary problem

Abstract:The equilibrium configuration of a plasma in an axially symmetric reactor is described mathematically by a free boundary problem associated with the celebrated Grad--Shafranov equation. The presence of uncertainty in the model parameters introduces the need to quantify the variability in the predictions. This is often done by computing a large number of model solutions on a computational grid for an ensemble of parameter values and then obtaining estimates for the statistical properties of solutions. In this study, we explore the savings that can be obtained using multilevel Monte Carlo methods, which reduce costs by performing the bulk of the computations on a sequence of spatial grids that are coarser than the one that would typically be used for a simple Monte Carlo simulation. We examine this approach using both a set of uniformly refined grids and a set of adaptively refined grids guided by a discrete error estimator. Numerical experiments show that multilevel methods dramatically reduce the cost of simulation, with cost reductions typically on the order of 60 or more and possibly as large as 200. Adaptive gridding results in more accurate computation of geometric quantities such as x-points associated with the model.

Weakening the effect of boundaries: `diffusion-free' boundary conditions as a `do least harm' alternative to Neumann

Abstract:In this note, we discuss a poorly known alternative boundary condition to the usual Neumann or `stress-free' boundary condition typically used to weaken boundary layers when diffusion is present but very small. These `diffusion-free' boundary conditions were first developed (as far as the authors know) in 1995 (Sureshkumar & Beris, J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol 60, 53-80, 1995) in viscoelastic flow modelling but are worthy of general consideration in other research areas. To illustrate their use, we solve two simple ODE problems and then treat a PDE problem - the inertial wave eigenvalue problem in a rotating cylinder, sphere and spherical shell for small but non-zero Ekman number $E$. Where inviscid inertial waves exist (cylinder and sphere), the viscous flows in the Ekman boundary layer are $O(E^{1/2})$ weaker than for the corresponding stress-free layer and fully $O(E)$ weaker than in a non-slip layer. These diffusion-free boundary conditions can also be used with hyperdiffusion and provide a systematic way to generate as many further boundary conditions as required. The weakening effect of this boundary condition could allow precious numerical resources to focus on other areas of the flow and thereby make smaller, more realistic values of diffusion accessible to simulations.

Abstract:The propagation and scattering of electromagnetic waves in magnetized plasmas in a state where a global mode has been established or is in turbulence, are of theoretical and experimental interest in thermonuclear fusion research. Interpreting experimental results, as well as predicting plasma behavior requires the numerical solutions of the underlying physics, that is, the numerical solution of Maxwell equations under various initial conditions and, under the circumstances, complex boundary conditions. Casting, the underlying equations in a coordinate free form that exploits the symmetries and the conserved quantities in a form that can easily encompass a variety of initial and boundary conditions is of tantamount importance. Pursuing this task we utilize the advantages the Clifford Algebras can possibly provide. For simplicity we deal with a cold multi-species lossless magnetized plasma. The formulation renders a Dirac type evolution equation for am augmented state that consists of the electric and magnetic field bivectors as well as the polarizations and their associated currents for each species. This evolution equation can be dealt with a general spatial lattice disretization scheme. The evolution operator that dictates the temporal advancement of the state is Hermitian. This formulation is computationally simpler whatever the application could be. However, small wavelength capabilities (on the Debye length scale) for spatially large systems (magnetic confinement devices) is questionable even for conventional super-computers. However, the formulation provided in this work it is entirely suitable and it can be directly transferred in a quantum computer. It is shown that the simplified problem in the present work could be suitable for contemporary rudimentary quantum computers.
