Abstract:Currently, mixing hydrogen into natural gas networks is the most cost-effective method for transporting significant quantities of hydrogen over long distances. However, after mixing natural gas with hydrogen, the properties of the mixed gas will change significantly, manifested as faster diffusion rate, increased combustion rate, and wider flammability limit. In this paper, a CFD numerical simulation method is used to establish a numerical model for the leakage and diffusion of buried hydrogen-blended natural gas (HBNG) pipelines, and the concentration diffusion trend and velocity flow field distribution of HBNG in soil under different leakage conditions are studied, as well as the alarm time when HBNG diffusion reaches the lower flammability limit (LFL) at the ground surface. At the same time, the effects of hydrogen blending ratio (HBR), pipeline operating pressure, soil porosity and leakage diameter on HBNG leakage and diffusion are investigated. The simulation results indicate that increasing the HBR will increase the diffusion rate of the mixed gas and reduce the LFL, resulting in a decrease of the alarm time. The increase of pipeline operating pressure and leakage diameter will increase the mass flow rate, and the increase of soil porosity will reduce the resistance when HBNG spreads in the soil. All three cases will significantly reduce the alarm time. The results of this study will provide some references for the emergency response work of buried pipeline leakage and the risk assessment of HBNG leakage and explosion.

Abstract:In order to achieve the prediction and early warning of city gas pipe network leakage accidents, as well as to provide rapid and precise support for emergency response to such accidents, this study focuses on a Gaussian diffusion model applied to a large urban gas pipeline network. Specifically, it investigates the gas gate wells, which are key nodes in the pipeline network, to develop a leakage model. The objective is to analyze the variation in internal gas concentration in the gate wells and determine the range of danger posed by external gas diffusion from the gate wells. In addition, Fluent simulation is utilized to compare the accuracy of the model's calculations. The findings of this study indicate that the gas concentration inside the gate well, as predicted by the model fitting results and Fluent simulation, exhibit a high level of agreement, with coefficient of determination (R2) values exceeding 0.99. Moreover, when predicting the hazardous distance of gas leakage outside the gate well, the model's results show an average relative error of 0.15 compared to the Fluent simulation results. This demonstrates that the model is highly accurate and meets the practical application requirements.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the perforation-caused leakage diffusion of the underground gas pipeline. Common situations, such as normal leakage model, perforation leakage model and pipe model, are analyzed by theoretical method, and so does the leakage model of natural gas in atmosphere, such as Gauss model. Subsequently, the actual perforation leakage diffusion problem is simplified into an ideal model based on the characteristics of buried gas pipeline. CFD software FLUENT is adopted to perform a transient simulation of this problem, by which the changing trend of the diffusion concentration and velocity of methane with time is obtained and the influence from perforation diameter is further investigated. The results obtained in this paper provide some scientific basis to the safety management and accident rapid rescue of underground gas pipeline.

The one-dimensional diffusion equation of buried gas pipeline leakage is established based on leakage calculation model. The equation is solved by the dimensional analysis method, and the expression of gas leakage concentration in soil is deducted. The leakage and diffusion law of gas in soil is obtained through analyzing the example calculation.

Abstract:With economic development and the burgeoning need for energy, numerous underground gas pipelines have been deployed for operation. Buried gas pipelines often suffer failures as a result of adverse factors, including corrosion, uneven subsidence, and damage caused by third parties. To investigate and predict the diffusion behavior following a natural gas pipeline leakage, Fluent software is utilized to develop a numerical model for the leakage and diffusion of high-pressure natural gas within a confined space. This model incorporates the Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation of state, which is widely recognized for its exceptional precision in characterizing the behavior of natural gas under high-pressure conditions. The study focuses on the analysis of leakage and diffusion behavior as well as the examination of how pipeline operating pressure and leakage diameter have an impact on the dispersion of leaked gas. Further, the prediction model for the diffusion distance of the hazardous area is developed, employing the least-square method and finite element calculations. The results show that, during the leakage process, a vortex and velocity region emerge, extending along the confined space. The farther away from the leakage hole above the pipeline, the higher the overall concentration of the gas. Moreover, the horizontal diffusion distance of gas at the bottom of the pipeline is considerably smaller than that above it. However, gas tends to readily accumulate in a high concentration area at the bottom of the pipeline. Elevating the leakage diameter and the operation pressure leads to a significant rise in gas concentration and the horizontal diffusion of the hazardous area. It is worth noting that the leakage diameter has a more pronounced effect on gas diffusion than does the pressure. The prediction model proposed in this study effectively anticipates the horizontal diffusion of the hazardous area within confined spaces.

Abstract:Leak detection and localization of liquid or gas is of great significance to avoid potential danger and reduce the waste of resources. Leak detection and localization methods are varied and uniquely suited to specific application scenarios. The existing methods are primarily applied to conventional pressurized pipelines and open areas, and there are few methods suitable for multi-grid spaces. In this paper, a gas diffusion model applied to multi-grid space is constructed, and a method for leak detection and localization using the concentration gradient of characteristic gas is proposed according to the prediction behavior. The Gaussian plume model is selected due to its advantages of simplicity and the interpretation of gas diffusion behavior is closer to reality; the expression of the improved model is also obtained. To verify the correctness of the model and the applicability of the localization method, taking the coolant leakage in the circuit system as an example, three experiments with different source strengths were repeated. The fitting correlation coefficients between the gas concentration data of the three experiments and the model are 0.995, 0.997 and 0.997, respectively. The experimental results show that the model has a strong correlation with the real plume behavior, and it is reasonable to use the gas concentration gradient for the localization of the leak source. This study provides a reference for future research on the leak detection and localization of gas- or liquid-containing volatile substances in a complex multi-grid space.

Abstract:Parallel buried gas pipelines in tunnels are located in a confined space environment, where natural gas is vulnerable to accumulating to the minimum explosion limit concentration after a leakage accident. Therefore, to reduce the time for locating the leakage source after an accident and compensate for the loss of emergency response, an experimental model for scaling parallel gas transmission pipelines in tunnels was established and the dispersion characteristics and influencing factors of continuous leakage of natural gas within buried soil and in tunnel space were investigated numerically, and the correlation between the volume of the explosion range of natural gas within the tunnel space and each influencing factor was explored using gray correlation analysis. The research shows that the leakage dispersion process of parallel buried gas pipelines in tunnels includes seepage leakage in the soil region and diffusion transport in the tunnel air region. In the soil region, natural gas from the pipeline leak forms a circular shape and tends to percolate upward due to the combined effect of pressure and concentration gradients.In the tunnel air region, the spatial dispersion of natural gas concentration obeys a multivariate Gaussian distribution, and the temporal dimension is divided into three phases: the initial phase of leakage, the spreading phase and the stable phase of leakage. The diffusion speed of natural gas is positively correlated with the operating pressure of pipeline. The concentration peak value (y max ) at the leakage orifice position and the leakage aperture (d x ) approximately meet the linear relationship: y max = 7.62d x . The diffusion path of natural gas is greatly influenced by the orientation of the pipeline perforations, and the tunnel walls have a directional effect on the diffusion of natural gas. The main factors affecting the volume of the explosion range of natural gas within the tunnel space are parallel pipeline leakage pressure, pipeline leakage aperture, parallel pipeline leakage position, pipeline operating pressure, and pipeline leakage direction, with grey correlation coefficients of 0.76, 0.675, 0.662, 0.553, and 0.55. The proposed model was demonstrated be able to simulate and predict the diffusion of natural gas under the accidental leakage of buried gas pipelines in tunnels. And the results of this study can guide the installation of buried gas pipelines crossing mountain tunnels to prevent accidents.

Abstract:Gas pipeline will cause leakage accidents due to corrosion, aging, third-party damage and other reasons. Gas pipeline leakage will directly cause energy waste, environmental pollution and economic losses. So in the process of operation and management of gas pipeline, it is necessary to timely detect the occurrence of leakage accidents, determine the location of leakage, and judge the extent of leakage. Based on the theory of pipeline fluid dynamics, the transient flow model of direct gas pipeline is established, and the leakage detection scheme of direct gas pipeline is proposed. The common measurable operating parameters at both ends of the engineering pipeline are summarized into two types of boundaries, A and B, and the solution methods of the transient flow model are given respectively. Combined with the experimental data, the leakage detection of gas straight pipeline is analyzed by example.

Abstract:With widespread deployment of the urban natural gas industry, the energy security is now becoming one of the priorities in practice. Gas leakage may occur from the pipeline during the collection and transportation process. This article therefore presented a theoretical study on the urban natural gas pipeline leakage in order to provide the basic theory of the rescue policy making in emergent occasions. The investigation was undertaken through the fundamental analysis based on derivation of gas leakage models. The gas leakage model was applied to analyze the pressure, temperature and flow rate of gas leakage over time under both the steady-state and dynamic conditions. Two main impacting factors, pressure and hole size, were subsequently discussed. It is concluded that for the steady leakage the flow rate increases with the increase of pipeline pressure and hole size. And the distribution of pressure, temperature, density and velocity were calculated along the pipeline. For the unsteady leakage, the time of leakage is very short under different initial pressure and hole size, and the total leakage and average leakage rates were analyzed.

Abstract:The leakage of urban buried natural gas pipeline is hard to discover , and some secondary accidents such as explo-sion , fire and poisoning are easy to occur .A model was established aiming at two situations including layered filling and un -layered filling in construction of low pressure buried natural gas pipeline .The basic control equations were revised according to the porous media model , and the numerical simulation on gas leakage and diffusion under the conditions of layered filling and unlayered filling in pipeline trench was conducted by applying FLUENT component transport model and RNG k -εturbu-lence model , then three concentration regions were divided according to the molar quantity of gas in the simulated soil .The results showed that the time for the gas quantity in the sandy soil on the soil interface with layered filling to reach low concen -tration was quicker , which was about 60 s, and the time to reach high concentration was 12 min.on the interface of two ma-terials, the diffusion of high concentration gas had a delay time , and the diffusion curves of medium and low concentration gas on the interface had obvious inflection point .The diffusion rate accelerated after entering the upper soil , while the diffu-sion rate in the unlayered filling model had no obvious change .

Abstract:A 2-D CFD model of a buried medium-pressure pipeline was set up and simulated by FLUENT to re-search the diffusion law and gas concentration for the natural gas leaking into the soil .The soil was taken as homo-geneous porous medium in this model .The radius of dangerous area on the surface at different time was described , and different factors such as pipe pressure , leak size , leak location were analyzed .The results showed that higher inlet pressure causes larger volume flow and wider dangerous area at the same time .Leak hole diameter effects slightly on the dangerous area radiuses for the same inlet pressure .The radius of dangerous area for the upward leak direction is largest initially while the radius of downward direction exceeds to be the largest after a certain time .

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, according to the idea of “forward model algorithm of leakage and diffusion”, the research on LNG leakage and diffusion in dangerous goods logistics park is completed, the main research contents are as follows: 1) An improved forward Gaussian diffusion model of LNG is established to modify the parameters according to the specific environment of dangerous goods logistics park. 2) The safety trace software is used to simulate the process of LNG leakage and diffusion in the hazardous materials logistics park. The applicability of the improved Gaussian diffusion model in the case of LNG tank leakage in the dangerous goods logistics park is verified by the influence of the downwind distance of the concentration contour line and environmental factors on the leakage and diffusion.

Abstract:A one-dimensional diffusion model of gas is developed to investigate landfill gas transport in unsaturated layered cover systems.Coupled processes of gas diffusion in the unsaturated cover and transient water transport in the media were considered.The mathematical model was solved by using the finite element analysis software COMSOL Multiphysics 4.3.The results obtained by the proposed model agree well with those obtained by the experimental methods.It is shown that the variation of water content has great influence on landfill gas transport in a 1-meter-thickness unsaturated landfill cover soil.For the 1-meter-thcikness unsaturated cover soil,the relative gas concentrations for the case assuming coupled transport was approximately 8 times smaller than those assuming steady transport at the time range of 20 d to 100 d.It is indicated that the water content is of great importance when predicting the unsteady gas migration in unsaturated landfill cover systems.

Abstract:The numerical simulation method of analyzing the effect of barrier on diffusion due to pipeline failure and the model for diffusion of natural gas had been established using species transport and reaction module of Fluent. By practical reconnaissance, the predigested 2D geometric model for barrier was established. Furthermore, the effect of barrier on diffusion of natural gas was obtained by comparison of simulation results (such as the distribution of natural gas and velocities in the case of barrier or no barrier). The simulation results can provide reference for dealing with the leakage of natural gas due to pipeline failure.

Abstract:Abstract When the buried gas pipeline leaks due to corrosion, aging, overload and other reasons, serious safety accidents are easy to occur. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model is established to simulate the underground gas diffusion from the directly buried pipeline, through the soil to the atmosphere. Using the model, the diffusion characteristics under the conditions of different initial pipeline pressures and different soil porosities are comparatively simulated and analysed. As indicated by the numerical results, when pinhole leakage occurs, the gas concentration exhibits a symmetrical distribution in the horizontal and axial directions. The gas content gradually reduces, as the distance from the leakage point increases. The diffusion process and gas content are largely determined by the initial leak pressure, as well as the flow resistance in accordance with the soil porosity.

Abstract:This paper introduces a numerical method to calculate the diffusion of natural gas due to pipeline failure, which provides an effective base for solving the problems of leakage of natural gas. A finite volumetric model and the corresponding numerical algorithm are established by using species transport and reaction module of FLUENT. In this method, several important parameters such as the mole fraction of components, pressure and temperature distributions within the calculating region are predicted to certain accuracy. Based on numerical results, the key factors affecting the natural gas diffusion such as the diameter of the hole and wind speed are also analyzed. The current study presents a clear view in dealing with the leakage of natural gas due to pipeline failure.

Abstract:World widely, most natural gas pipelines are directly buried underground. Unfortunately, leakages often occur to the natural gas pipelines because of corrosion, external interference, construction defects, etc. As a result of the gas diffusion and accumulation in the soil or adjacent underground space, the potential explosion risk threatens people's lives and properties in case of a fire. Detailed clarification of the diffusion behavior of leaked natural gas from an underground pipe to the soil is essential to shorten the duration of detecting and locating the leak point. In this work, a numerical method is proposed to investigate the pinhole leakage diffusion characteristics of natural gas in the soil. The variations of the gas concentrations under different leak conditions, as well as the effects of the pinhole size, pinhole location, pipe pressure and soil property on the gas diffusion process, are simulated in detail. The simulation results indicate that the risk radius gradually increase with a declining growth rate. The gas concentration along the pipe length shows Gaussian distribution. Leakage with larger pinhole size and higher pipeline pressure leads to a larger amount of leaked gas, consequently resulting in a larger risk area. While, the pinhole location only influences the gas concentration distribution in the vicinity of the leak point. Moreover, the particle diameter and porosity of the soil directly determine the gas concentration distribution in the diffusion.

Abstract:For the risk of gas leakage and explosion that may occur during the serviceability of urban natural gas pipeline, based on the numerical simulation conducted by FLACS, the gas leakage, explosion and disaster risk under the different speed of wind are mainly studied with local climate characteristics for actual urban street. The results show that the wind speed has an obvious effect on the gas leakage and diffusion, the deviation of gas leakage direction is not obvious for the smaller speed of wind at the initial stage, the horizontal diffusion range gradually increases with the increase of wind speed, while the vertical diffusion range gradually decreases, and the volume of gas at the limit concentration of combustion and explosion gradually decreases. In urban buildings, the overpressure load of higher buildings is lower. After the explosion, the peak overpressure at the same monitoring point decreases with the increase of wind speed. With the increase of distance from the building to the explosion location, the overpressure load on the building decreases and the oscillation effect of overpressure load is relatively gentle. The thermal radiation after burning has great influence on the surrounding buildings and downwind position, especially the buildings around the leakage point.

Abstract:With the breakthrough in mixing hydrogen into natural gas pipelines for urban use, the widespread application of hydrogen-blended natural gas (HBNG) in energy delivery is imminent. However, this development also introduces significant safety concerns due to notable disparities in the physical and chemical properties between methane and hydrogen, heightening the risks associated with gas leaks. Current models that simulate the diffusion of leaked HBNG from buried pipelines into the atmosphere often employ fixed average leakage rates, which do not accurately represent the dynamic nature of gas leakage and diffusion. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) 2024R1 software to build a three-dimensional simulation model under a soil–atmosphere coupling model for HBNG leakage and diffusion. The findings reveal that, in the soil–atmosphere coupling model, the gas diffusion range under a fixed leakage rate is smaller than that under a dynamic leakage rate. Under the same influencing factors in calm wind conditions, the gas primarily diffuses in the vertical direction, whereas under the same influencing factors in windy conditions, the gas mainly diffuses in the horizontal direction.

Abstract:Most urban gas pipelines are buried underground. Small leaks can occur and are difficult to detect, which is a threat to urban public safety. Thus, gas leaks in buried gas lines need to be detected and assessed. The leaks can be located by analyzing the coupled gas dispersion in the soil and atmosphere. Different governing equations were used to model the dispersion in the soil and atmosphere in OpenFOAM. The flows were coupled through the mass flux leaving the ground surface. The models were used to investigate the impact of the leakage rate on the pressure and concentration distribution and the impact of the convective mass transfer coefficient on the concentration distribution and ground mass flux. The gas distribution in an urban street canyon was analyzed to show that the ground mass flux has little effect on the methane distribution in the street canyon. The model can be used as a reference for leak detection and assessments of buried gas pipelines.
