Abstract:By using one-dimensional photon state-vector function obtained previously, a general analytic expression is deduced for the optical two-hole interference experiment, which not only greatly enlarges the range of the observable, but also completely represents the probability distribution for a photon in the whole space. On the basis of the basic rules of quantum optics, we quantitatively analyze and discuss the domain of definition of the experiment, and the quantum behavior of the interference item on the average of space.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the light double-slit diffraction experiment with quantum theory approach. Firstly, we calculate the light wave function in slits by quantum theory of photon. Secondly, we calculate the diffraction wave function with Kirchhoff's law. Thirdly, we give the diffraction intensity of light double-slit diffraction, which is proportional to the square of diffraction wave function. Finally, we compare calculation result of quantum theory and classical electromagnetic theory with the experimental data. We find the quantum calculate result is accordance with the experiment data, and the classical calculation result with certain deviation. So, the quantum theory is more accurately approach for studying light diffraction.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the full new method of quantum theory to study the double-slit diffraction of ${C_{60}}$ molecules. We calculate the double-slit wave functions of ${C_{60}}$ molecules by Schrödinger equation, and calculate the diffraction wave function behind the slits with the Feynman path integral quantum theory, and then give the relation between the diffraction intensity of double-slit and diffraction pattern position. We compare the calculation results with two different double-slit diffraction experiments. When the decoherence effects are considered, the calculation results are in good agreement with the two experimental data.
Sudden Transition Between Classical and Quantum Decoherence in Dissipative Cavity QED and Stationary Quantum Discord

Abstract:We investigate the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence in the study of quantum discord for a dissipative cavity QED system, which consists of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a dissipative cavity. It is found that the quantum discord between the two atoms, which are prepared initially in the X-type quantum states, is not destroyed by the dissipation of the cavities for a finite time interval, and the stationary quantum discord can arise in the interaction of atoms with cavities as the time approaches infinity. The transition time is sensitive to the initial state parameter of the two atoms and the mean photon number of the coherent field. Interestingly, the quantum discord between the two atoms is completely unaffected by the dissipation of the cavities if we choose the suitable value of the ratio, which depends on the decay rate of the two cavities and the atom-field coupling constant.

Abstract:Diffraction phenomena of large molecules had been demonstrated in many experiments, and these experiments were explained by many theoretical works. In this paper, we presented a detailed theoretical treatment of the single and double-slit diffraction of C60 with quantum theory approach, and we paid close attention to the diffraction experiment of C60 carried out by Zeilinger et al. in 1999. In double-slit diffraction, we further considered the decoherence effect, and found the theoretical results were in good accordance with experimental data.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of nonlinear Kerr-like medium and dipole-dipole interaction on the dynamics of quantum discord in Tavis–Cummings model with phase decoherence. We show that in the resonance case (i) atom-field quantum discord rapidly decays with phase decoherence and doesn't exist the stationary state quantum discord, but the stationary state quantum discord appears if we choose the suitable values of Kerr coefficient χ and dipole–dipole interaction Ω, (ii) the quantum discord of two atoms survives in the stationary state and the amount of stationary state quantum discord could be improved by adjusting the values of χ and Ω. In the non-resonance case, the arbitrary bipartite quantum discord of the system could not be completely destroyed by the phase decoherence and can be improved by applying nonlinear Kerr-like medium and dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum discord dynamics of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a single-mode optical cavity which is filled with a nonlinear Kerr-like medium. It is found that quantum discord vanishes only asymptotically although entanglement disappears suddenly during the time evolution. Furthermore, we explore the influence of the nonlinear Kerr-like medium on the dynamics of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms. It is shown that the amount of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms can be improved by adjusting the value of the Kerr medium. Finally, we also study the effect of phase dissipation on this system by making use of the Monte Carlo wavefunction method. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Diffraction phenomena of large molecules have been studied in many experiments, and these experiments are described by many theoretical works. In this paper, we study $C_{60}$ molecules single and double-slit diffraction with quantum theory approach, and we pay close attention to the $C_{60}$ diffraction experiment carried out by A.Zeilinger et.at in 1999. In double-slit diffraction, we consider the decoherence effect, and find the theoretical results are good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:The double-slit experiment is one of the quintessential quantum experiments. However, it tends to be overlooked that a theoretical account of this experiment requires the specification of the joint position and time distribution of detection at the screen, whose position marginal yields the famous interference pattern. The difficulty then arises what this distribution should be. While there exists a variety of proposals for a quantum mechanical time observable, there is no consensus about the right choice. Here, we consider Bohmian mechanics, which allows for a natural and practical approach to this problem. We simulate this distribution in the case of an initial Gaussian wave packet passing through a double-slit potential. We also consider a more challenging setup in which one of the slits is shut during flight. To experimentally probe the quantum nature of the time distribution, a sufficient longitudinal spread of the initial wave packet is required, which has not been achieved so far. Without sufficient spread, the temporal aspect of the distribution can be treated classically. We illustrate this for the case of the double-slit experiment with helium atoms by Kurtsiefer et al. [Nature 386, 150 (1997)], which reports the joint position and time distribution.

Abstract:In Copenhagen's interpretation, a self-interference mechanism is assumed for a wave function to split and to pass through the slits simultaneously, then recombine and collapse to generate a dot signal on a detector. Its use of a single wave function to describe a whole ensemble without accounting for a particle's individuality is incomplete. To better understand the single-electron double-slit interference, we use a wave-packet trajectory approach to track each electron's dynamics and calculate the time-dependent interference intensity. We analyze the self-interference and cross-interference mechanisms to illustrate how an electron's coherence length affects the self-interference and how it dictates the wave packet overlaps between adjacent electrons for the cross-interference mechanism to be effective. To circumvent a conflicting dilemma between the electron's indivisibility and its wave-packet split while passing through the slits, we consider an alternate mechanism involving slit-induced quantized momentum. This mechanism preserves the electron's indivisibility and avoids the illusive split, recombination and mysterious collapse of a single particle's wave function.

Abstract:We present a computer simulation model that reproduces, event-by-event, the wave mechanical results of double-slit and two-beam interference experiments. The same model also simulates a one-to-one copy of a single-photon interference experiment with a Fresnel biprism (Jacques V. et al., Eur. Phys. J. D, 35 (2005) 561). The model satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and is solely based on experimental facts, comprising the apparatuses used in the experiment and the observation of individual detector clicks. Our results prove that it is possible to give a particle-only description of single-photon double-slit experiments.

Abstract:The Fourier spectrum due to double-grating diffraction-interference effect under near-coherent illumination is investigated experimentally. It is verified that the Fourier spectrum will split under certain special conditions. The splitting of the Fourier spectrum is related to the light source coherence and the Lau condition. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical study of the quantum interference behaviour of electron flow from a double-slit device made from a semiconductor two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system with the slit widths in the quantum conductance regime. The device consists of a double slit and a single slit in a configuration where the single slit is placed on the source side of the double slit. The wavefunctions of electrons passing through the double-slit structure are calculated on the basis of a scattering matrix method. It is found that including a single slit between the double slit and the source contact in the device is essential for the observation of interference fringes of electron flow in a double-slit experiment with a 2DEG. When only the lowest mode is open for conduction in the individual slits, the interference patterns of electron flow from the double slit resemble the results of a conventional Young's double-slit experiment well. When several modes are open for conduction in the individual slits, the interference patterns of electron flow from the double slit are dominated by the interference of electrons flowing through the highest index open modes in the slits. As a result of the existence of multiple-lobe structures in electron flow from these high index open modes, these interference patterns, in general, show rather complex structures. We also discuss the characteristics of interference patterns in the near-and far-field regimes and the dependence of the fringe spacing on the slit distance in the double slit.

Abstract:In this study, we solve analytically the Schrödinger equation for a macroscopic quantum oscillator as a central system coupled to two environmental micro-oscillating particles. Then, the double-slit interference patterns are investigated in two limiting cases, considering the limits of uncertainty in the position probability distribution. Moreover, we analyze the interference patterns based on a recent proposal called stochastic electrodynamics with spin. Our results show that when the quantum character of the macro-system is decreased, the diffraction pattern becomes more similar to a classical one. We also show that, depending on the size of the slits, the predictions of quantum approach could be apparently different with those of the aforementioned stochastic description.

Abstract:The double-slit experiment has become a classic thought experiment for its clarity in expressing the central puzzle of quantum mechanics-wave-particle complementarity. Such wave-particle duality continues to be challenged and investigated in a broad range of entities with electrons, neutrons, helium atoms, C-60 fullerenes, Bose-Einstein condensates, and biological molecules. In this Rapid Communication, we present a double-slit scenario at Fermi scale with new entities-coherent photon products in heavy-ion collisions. Virtual photons from the electromagnetic fields of relativistic heavy ions can fluctuate to quark-antiquark pairs, scatter off a target nucleus, and emerge as vector mesons. The two colliding nuclei can take turns to act as targets, forming a double-slit interference pattern. Furthermore, the "which-way" information can be partially solved using sufficiently-high multiplicity heavy-ion collisions so that the reaction plane can be determined, which demonstrates the complementary principle, a key concept of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We study the decoherence of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from condensed atoms without confinement, by using two same pumping pulses with an interval time. The first pulse is to establish a matter-wave grating, and the coherence between different momentum modes is measured by the second pulse after a variable interval time. Different from the case in the trap, the distruction of the grating owing to the phase perturbation is very fast, and the superradiant process is inhibited very soon afterwards for released atoms. A semi-classical model is applied to simulate this phase perturbation, and the calculation agrees with our experimental results.

Abstract:Double slits with molecular states Despite decades of research, the role of quantum mechanical effects in molecular scattering has not yet been fully investigated and can still demonstrate fascinating results, even for simple triatomic systems. Zhou et al . show that the entangled bond axis orientations in the biaxial state of a deuterium molecule can act as the two slits of a double-slit interferometer for rotationally inelastic collision with a helium atom, giving rise to quantum interference between two indistinguishable pathways (see the Perspective by Wang and Yang). The present work presents an elegant example of quantum interference in molecular scattering that is conceptually similar to the famous Young’s optical double-slit experiment. The proposed molecular interferometer could be used to coherently control the phases in various molecular processes in future experiments. —YS
