Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical significance of procalcitonin (PCT) in the early diagnosis of severe neonatal infections. Methods 86 cases of neonates with infection and 31 cases of non-infection neonatal were enrolled from April 2012 to August 2012, and divided into severe infection group, local infection and non-infection group. PCT and C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured and compared. Results A plasma PCT≥0.5 ng/ml was considered as positive. The positive rates in severe infection, local infection and non-infection groups were 91.84%, 37.84% and 16.13% respectively (P<0.05). The positive rate in severe infection group was significantly higher than in the other 2 groups. Similar results were found in CRP positive rate. The diagnostic sensitivity, Youden's index, positive and negative predictive value of PCT in severe infection disease were higher than those of CRP. Conclusion PCT can be the a sensitive and specific marker for the early diagnosis of severe neonatal infections, with ideal predictive value for severity and prognosis.
