Abstract:A new steroidal glycoside (1), (25R)-14α, 17α-hydroxyspirost-5-en-3β-yl 3-O-α-L-rhamnpyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-β-D-glucopyranoside, together with three known steroidal glycosides, (25R)-3β-hydroxyspirost-5-en-1β-yl-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (2), Cixi-ophiopogon B (3) and Cixi-ophiopogon A (4), were obtained from the tuberous roots of Ophiopogon japonicus (Liliaceae). Compound 2 was isolated from the Ophiopogon genus for the first time. Their structures were identified on the basis of extensive mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:Four novel cycloartanes, named sphaerophysone A (1), B (2), C (3) and D (4), were isolated from the ethanol extract of Sphaerophysa salsula (Pall.) DC. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence, and the stereochemistry of compound 1 was defined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Sphaerophysone B (2) may be an artifact formed in the isolation procedure.

Abstract:Systematic phytochemical investigation on the stems of Kadsura coccinea resulted in the isolation of eleven new lanostane-type triterpenoids, named kadcoccinones G-Q (1-11), together with two known structural analogues, kadpolysperin M (12) and abiesatrine D (13). Their structures were characterized on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configuration of 1 was ascertained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Structurally, compounds 1/2, 4/5, and 6/7 were three pairs of C-12 epimers, respectively. Additionally, compounds 1-11 were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against the human tumor HL-60, SMMC-772, A-549, MCF-7, SW-480, and HeLa cell lines using the MTS viability assay. Abstract:Two new pentacyclic triterpenoids, 2beta,3beta,16alpha-trihydroxyl-24alpha-al-olean-12-en-28-oic acid (1), 2beta,3beta-dihydroxyl-16-O-beta-D-glucopyranose-24alpha-al-olean-12-en-28-oic acid (2) and two known pentacyclic triterpenoids were isolated from the roots of Aster ageratoides var. pilosus. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (IR, MS, 1H, 13C and 2D NMR). In addition, the anti-bacterial activity and anti-tumor activity of compound 2 were tested.

Abstract:Two new cycloartane glycosides were isolated from the whole herbs of Camptosorus sibiricus Rupr.. By means of chemical and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1D- and 2D- NMR, HRMS, ESI-MS), the structures were established as (24 R)-3β,7β,24,25,30-pentahydroxycycloartane 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-24- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-30- O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), and (24 R)-3β,7β,24,25,30-pentahydroxycycloartane 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-24- O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2). The two new compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity in vitro against human tumor cell lines (A375-S2, Hela) using the MTT method, but both compounds were inactive.

Abstract:Twelve cyclolanstane-type saponins including six new ones, astrolanosaponins A1 (1), A2 (2), B (3), C (4), D (5), and E (6) were obtained from the stem of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao, and their structures were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic methods. Of the known ones, cycloastragenol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), astraverrucin II (8), cycloaraloside E (9), huangqiyenin A (10), and huangqiyenin B (11) were isolated from the species first. Meanwhile, compounds 1-3, 5-9, and aleksandroside I (12) showed inhibitory effects on triglyceride accumulation in HepG2 cells.

Their structures were identified by their chemical and spectroscopic characters. All obtained compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against four cancer cell lines.

Abstract:Two unprecedented oleane-type triterpenes (5-6) were isolated from the roots of Astilbe grandis Stapf ex Wils, along with four known triterpenes (1-4), all of which were separated from this plant for the first time. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses especially analysis of 2D NMR data, and the absolute configurations of 5 and 6 were determined by comparison of experimental and calculated ECD data. The structure of 5 was further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1-6 were evaluated for their in vitro anti-tumor activities on A549, Caco-2, H460 and Skov-3 cells lines. All of the compounds exhibited obvious anti-Caco-2 activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.86 to 4.94 & mu;M, among of them compound 6 also had the apparent effect on A549 cells. In addition, compounds 1, 4 and 5 were evaluated relatively strong inhibitory activity against H460 cells' growth with IC50 values of 5.13 & mu;M, 5.65 & mu;M and 8.85 & mu;M respectively.

Abstract:Two new sesquiterpenoids, sarglanoids G and H (1 and 2), together with two known analogues (3-4) were isolated from the roots of Sarcandra glabra. Compound 2 was a rare elemene-type sesquiterpenoid with a furan ring fragment, which is mostly lactone ring in its analogues. The structures of new compounds were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods including HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, and the absolute configuration of 1 was established by ECD calculations. Their anti-inflammatory activities were also evaluated.

Abstract:Two new triterpene lactones, polysperlactones A (2) and B (3), were isolated from the stems of Kadsura polysperma, together with the known compounds heteroclitalactone D (1) and schisanlactone E (4). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including 2D-NMR and HR-MS techniques. The configuration of 1 was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Compounds 2 and 3 are members of a rare class of 3,4-secolanostane metabolites with ring-expanded or cyclized structures, respectively.
