Abstract:This study examined the English learning motivation of Chinese ethnic university students. A sample of 776 undergraduates from three representative ethnic universities participated in this research. The findings indicated four types of English learning motivation: intrinsic interest, learning situation, personal development, and international communication. There were statistically significant differences between ethnic minority and Han students, and between male and female students. Moreover, the intrinsic interest motivation of Han students was significantly higher than that of ethnic minority students, and female students’ overall motivation and personal development motivation were significantly higher than those of male students. Intrinsic interest motivation had a significantly positive impact on English achievement, whereas learning situation motivation had a significantly negative impact. These findings highlight the improvement of the learning situation and encouragement of intrinsic interest to enhance minority students’ second language learning and sustainable development. Further research on English as a second language should consider the influence of family and ethnic background.

Abstract:Existing literature indicates that motivation is the most powerful determining factor that influences the rate and success of second language learning (Jiang, 2016; Kramsch & Yin, 2018; Li & Edwards, 2017; Liu et al., 2016; Liu, 2016; You & Dörnyei, 2016; Zhi & Wang, 2019). Currently, there is a growing body of empirical research indicating the changes in second language learning motivation at different school levels at the same or different schools (Chambers, 1999; Kim, 2011, 2012a, b; Lamb, 2007; Williams et al., 2002). The findings of previous studies have mostly shown that student second language learning motivation increases with increasing school levels. Do ̈rnyei (2000) suggested that concentrating on the time dimension of second language motivation is crucial for comprehending the second language motivation of students. However, the temporal variations of second language motivation, particularly motivational changes at different Chinese secondary school levels, have not been emphasized by second language motivation researchers, therefore, this quantitative research investigated the changes in Chinese secondary school students’ English learning motivation from junior high to high school. An English learning motivation questionnaire was used and administered to 3000 students from Grades 7 to 12 in public secondary schools across Mainland China, and employed the reliability analysis and analysis of variance to analyze quantitative data. The statistical results revealed that Chinese high school students ranked highest in English learning motivation, followed by junior high school students. Furthermore, the college entrance examination had a positive impact on high school students' motivation to learn English.

Abstract:This study adopts the scope review method to search for relevant studies on non-native speakers' motivation to learn Chinese in the SSCI, CSSCI and Peking University Core Thesis Database, and combs and analyses the obtained literature from the perspectives of general trend, research object, research method and research content, pointing out the deficiencies of the current studies and suggesting suggestions for the future researches. The results of the analysis show that although the number of studies in this field is relatively abundant, the scope of research objects is narrow, the breadth of research perspectives is insufficient, the research method is relatively single, and there are certain research gap areas. Based on the above findings, the author makes corresponding suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Learning motivation is the key to success for individual learners in learning a second language. The research on learning motivation of learning Chinese as a second language started from abroad 30 years ago and ever since then has thrived in China.The research samples are comparatively small and the methods are di-versified and refined,of which the results lies in the degree dissertation mainly.The trend of theory discussion could be seen and there have been more and more researches on the Chinese learnersˊmotivation in non -target language environment.However,the definition of second language learning motivation is non -consistent,the research on theories is inadequate and the study has relied too much on the questionnaires.How to construct the theory and the research model of Chinese learning motivation is urgent.

Abstract:In the past ten years, academic research on second language motivation has been very fruitful, and the number of published studies in this field far exceeds the characteristics of other language learners. It is worth noting that compared with the prosperity of second language motivation research in foreign journals, the number of domestic literature published in the field of Chinese as a second language acquisition has been significantly reduced. This study selects foreign second language acquisition academic circles and domestic Chinese from January 2010 to August 2021 as the main journals of second language acquisition research, artificially screens research articles with the theme of "second language motivation", and conducts characteristics Coding and statistical analysis, according to the displayed theoretical framework and research method trends, inspect the current research status of this field, analyze the differences between domestic and foreign research, and predict the future research progress.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of motivation in learning English foreign language on the academic achievements of students in China. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings revealed that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to the role of motivation in learning English foreign language on the academic achievements of students in China. Preliminary empirical review reveals that motivation is a component that is both very crucial and effective in the process of picking up a new language. Therefore, it is important for instructors and lecturers of languages to learn about, appreciate, and pay attention to the personalities of the pupils in their classes. In addition, they need to have an understanding of motivation, the significant value it holds, and the different forms it might take. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Gardner’s Motivation theory, the Acculturation model and the Self Determination theory may be used to anchor future studies relating to the role of motivation in learning English foreign language. The study will be beneficial to EFL teachers and other relevant stakeholders in establishing policies and strategies to promote motivation in learning English foreign language.

Abstract:Motivation is an essential affective factor influencing the outcome of foreign language learning.Due to the important role English teachers play in motivating their students,in recent years much research has been done on teachers' motivational strategies.This study is a contrastive analysis of motivational strategies used by Chinese English teachers and foreign English teachers in the context of China's compulsory education.The results indicate 8 common macro-strategies used by both,including teachers' behavior,classroom atmosphere and teacher-student relationship,etc.The differences are that Chinese teachers prefer strategies like setting a good example,giving clear instructions and rewards besides grades while foreign teachers tend to adopt games and humor,develop imagination and creativity and instill cultural background information to motivate their students.

Abstract:Motivation has been recognized as a vital component in successfully learning a second or foreign language. However, research on language learners’ motivation in a study abroad context requires more attention in an era in which international mobility is becoming a new normal. This study investigated 217 Chinese overseas university students’ L2 motivation during their one-year postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. by examining a range of motivational variables in relation to their motivated English language learning behaviors. Integrating results from both questionnaires and interviews from nine participating students, the study revealed that international posture showed the strongest positive power, followed by the ideal L2 self, in explaining the learners’ willingness to communicate, frequency of communication, and intended learning effort. Additionally, instrumentality and parental encouragement exerted prominent promotional influence in shaping their intended learning effort. However, the ought-to L2 self-displayed a significant negative impact on their L2 learning in this study abroad context, and the role of attitudes toward L2 speakers/community and culture was not evident in this case. The findings shed light on a more comprehensive understanding of L2 motivation in a study abroad context, and offer insightful implications for English as a Foreign Language education in cultivating language learners’ motivation to prepare for study abroad.

Theory and Practice of Second Language Acquisition

Abstract:As a highly important affective variable, motivation has always been a focus of research in second/foreign language (SL/FL) learning and proved to play a critical role in SL/FL learning. Even so, considering the complex and dynamic nature of SL/FL motivation, it always deserves research. Guided by the newly proposed framework of L2 Motivational Self System (Dörnyei, 2005, 2009), the present mixed-method study hence explored Chinese English majors’ L2 motivational self. One hundred and one English majors from a prestigious university in Beijing answered the questionnaire and 15 of them were interviewed in the present study. Analyses of the data revealed the following main findings: (1) the participants were generallyhighly motivated to learn English, had vivid images of themselves as proficient English users in the future, had positive appraisals of their L2 learning experiences, and had a moderately good perception of their ought-to L2 self, (2) senior students reported having significantly higher ideal L2 self and held more positive attitudes towards English learning experience. Based on these findings, some pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
Modeling and verification of the structure of College English learning motivation within educational context

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the internal structure of College English learning motivation in educational context,based on Drnyei’s (1994) framework of L2 motivation.Statistical analyses were performed on the survey data collected from 2,489 non-English major undergraduates from eight tertiary institutions in China.Results show that the English learning motivation of Chinese college students is comprised of 8 components at 3 levels: L2 deep value,L2 surface value,and L2 vitality at the language level;self-efficacy,attribution,and language learning attitudes and beliefs at the learner level;and learning situation attitudes and L2 use anxiety at the learning situation level.Motivations at the language level affect those at the learner level,which in turn affect motivations at the learning situation level.Results also indicate that L2 deep value and language learning attitudes and beliefs are respectively the most important components of motivations at the language level and the learner level.

Abstract:There are more and more research on education of Chinese for foreigner.In the composition of academic motivation for Chinese for foreigner,the theory of Gardner who divided it into tool motive and infuse motive is famous.The partition of Chinese researchers preferred factor analysis but not theoretic discussion.Some researcher adapted the tools of foreign survey method,some researcher made up native method tools.All these tools had the problem of reliability and validity.The future research shall emphasize on the theoretic discussion and developing new valid method tools.

Abstract:The motivation of instructors has been found to have a significant impact on students' enthusiasm to learn a second language, but less attention has been paid to the motivation of English Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, especially in the Chinese environment where English plays a significant role. In order to lay the groundwork for the formulation of suggestions on how to increase teacher motivation and consequently boost the standard of instruction and student performance, this study explores the motivation of English instructors at the university level in China. 203 native Chinese EFL instructors who are currently employed at institutions in China’s mainland participated in the study. The motivation of EFL instructors for selecting a profession in teaching and the elements influencing that motivation was investigated using a quantitative approach design. For the purpose of evaluating the level of English writing skills of EFL instructors, a survey with close-ended questions that was founded on theories of motivation and modified from earlier research was utilized as the instrument. Then proportion, frequency, mean, and statistic tests were used to analyze the survey data. The findings indicate that the EFL instructors had a variety of motivations for deciding to work as teachers, with intrinsic motivation being the primary driver, followed by altruistic motivations like wanting to support English education in their own countries. The findings also showed that a variety of factors, such as positive student feedback, personal happiness, and a solid wage, had an impact on the motivation of EFL teachers. Demotivating variables were discovered to be extrinsic, such as poor pay and few other sources of money, uncomfortable working circumstances, and students' unfavorable attitudes.

Abstract:Most studies on EFL learners’ motivation in China are made by following the classical model of Gardner and Lambert,or D?rnyei.This paper explores the major sources and features of EFL learners’ motivation in China with the help of a questionnaire and SPSS.Results show the following features: 1) As a whole,sources of motivation are filled with the unique characteristic of Chinese culture;2) Teaching and learning situation influence many subjects’ English learning;3) Teaching and learning situation is closely related to learners’ instinct of curiosity and short-term objectives.

Abstract:Combining quantitative and qualitative methods,this study reports findings of an ongoing longitudinal study of types and intensity of English learning motivation among Chinese university students in the last two years of their study.Over 970 junior and senior undergraduates of five universities in Beijing participated in the study.The quantitative results revealed that while tendencies of motivation development were largely consistent with those of the freshmen and sophomore years,some changes occurred.Compared with the first two years,"intrinsic interest," "going abroad" and "learning situation" motivations increased;"information medium" and "individual development" motivations slightly decreased;"immediate achievement" and "social responsibility" motivations as well as motivation intensity remained stable.The qualitative data support the findings of the quantitative data and at the same time revealed more complexity and variation in students' motivation development.

Abstract:Under the background of globalization, English learning motivations among college English learner are complicated. It is necessary to survey the differences between English learners of different grades. 130 Students take part in the survey as research subjects. The results are as follows:among different types of learning motivations, learners ’motivation of immediate achievement and individual development are the strongest, while intrinsic interest, learning situation and going abroad are the weakest;fresh-men have much stronger motivation than juniors in general, especially on intrinsic interest and social responsibility.

Abstract:As part of a larger longitudinal study, this paper examines the development of Chinese students' EFL learning motivation throughout university undergraduate study, in an increasingly globalized local context. The study adopted a social constructivist perspective of language learning and combined research methods; the participants were over 1,000 undergraduates from 5 universities. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire (based on Gao et al. 2004) including motivational intensity and motivation types - instrumental, cultural, and situational, implemented annually from university entrance to graduation. The qualitative data consisted of individual and group interviews, student journals, and observations. Integrated data analysis revealed that sustained high-level long-term instrumental motivations coexisted with an increase of L2-oriented cultural motivations and situational motivation, particularly in the first and fourth year. The increased L2-oriented cultural motivations indicated neither "integrativeness" in the sense of becoming a member of the native English speaker community, nor a culturally neutral "global identity." The increase of such L2-oriented cultural motivations was also accompanied by a sustained "social responsibility" motivation oriented to learners' home culture. Such complexities of motivational development call for further investigation in increasingly globalized EFL contexts.

Abstract:Language motivation research has long been a research focus in the field of second language acquisition. In the past two decades, a large number of motivation studies has been conducted in different social and cultural contexts. Researchers contributed to the explorations of factors that affect learners’ foreign language motivation as well as the relationship between motivation and other aspects of foreign language learning. However, research on Chinese ethnic minority learners’ motivation to learn English is in paucity. Many of the ethnic minority students are proficient in their mother tongue (minority language) and Mandarin (national language), while they are also learning English as a foreign language. The social and cultural contexts to which they are exposed make their English learning complicated. To address the gap, the present study adopted a qualitative research approach in the form of a case study to explore the impact of learning experience on English learning motivation among three Chinese ethnic minority pre-university students. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with three participants. The findings from the qualitative data revealed that the English learning motivation of the participants was typically examination-directed and greatly influenced by teachers’ teaching style, peers’ attitudes toward English and the overall learning atmosphere in the class. The study provides implications for educational policy making and English instruction in China’s ethnic minority regions.
Exploring English Language Learners'Motivation and Online Self-Regulation in Higher Education Settings in Beijing and Taiwan

Abstract:This research focuses on college English language learners’ motivation and self-regulation in online language learning environments. A quantitative study was conducted based on 979students’ responses to two questionnaires at eight universities located in Beijing and Taiwan, China.The results indicated that university students in Beijing and Taiwan had rich online learning experiences although they employed different online platforms or resources for learning English.In general, learners at universities in Taiwan showed stronger motivation for learning English than learners at universities in Beijing. In contrast,learners from universities in Beijing perceived more effectively in goal setting, environmental structuring, and time management when learning online. The instrumental motivation of English language learners at universities in Beijing and Taiwan could positively predict all factors in their online self-regulated learning. Meanwhile,“cultural interest” played a significantly negative role in predicting most factors of online selfregulated learning. The research mapped the current status and structural relations between English language learners’ motivation and online self-regulation among university students in Beijing and Taiwan. It also provided empirical evidence and pedagogical implications for enhancing future educational exchanges and improving the quality of online education at both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
