Abstract:It has been long recognized that cultures play an important role in the diffusion of new products and innovations. Yet,the advances of new technology have dramatically changed our lives and our economies,and give rise to a unique kind of products – digital goods – that is created,delivered and consumed on digital devices connected to digital networks. How should the spatial spillovers of digital-content product diffusion and their conditions be interpreted from cultural perspective,and what kind of managerial implications could be obtained from this type of analysis? Using culture distance and social learning theory,this study explores the cultural spatial correlations in the diffusion of a digital-content product over the Internet,and looks into the mechanism behind this process. Utilizing theories of culture studies,we establishes a cultural spatial weighting matrix at provincial level of China,and use spatial fixed effect model to empirically test various cultural spatial relationships,especially on the social learning behaviors across different sub-cultures. The results show that there exist strong cultural spatial correlations in the propagation of digital goods; the imitation behavior among consumers within and across sub-cultures is the direct driving force behind product sales over the internet. The contributions of this research are threefold. First,it enhances current understanding of how digital content is adopted over time and across different cultures,and set up an example of how to define metricize culture distance. Second,it enhances our current understanding on the driving forces behind the diffusion of digital goods,especially on the imitation behaviors among consumers within and across sub-cultures in China. Third,it enriches the toolkit of researchers who are interested in large-scale technology innovation diffusion over time and across cultures. Moreover,it helps managers make better decisions with insights into how a market would react to digital goods and empowers them with knowledge about potential mechanisms to facilitate the diffusion process.The authors also discuss the managerial implications of the findings.
