On adaptive observation and adaptive observation strategies

Abstract:The adaptive observation strategy develops along with the adaptive observation(or targeted observation),which decides when and where to get the adaptive observation.The adaptive observation strategies including singular vector,breeding vector,adjoint sensitivity and ensemble Kalman filter,especially the adaptive observation strategies applied in Typhoon,are introduced.The theories of both adaptive observation and adaptive observation strategies,and the relations and differences among the adaptive observation strategies are discussed.There are several factors which have impact on the forecasting improvement resulting from adaptive observations,such as observation error,assimilation scheme and model error.On the purpose of applying the adaptive observation and comparing different adaptive observation strategies,a series of adaptive observation experiments were operated in different high impact weather situations.The results of the adaptive observation experiments in recent years are summarized.On average,the adaptive observation is able to improve the numerical weather prediction of the high impact weather efficiently.These adaptive observation experiments also improve the theoretical research of adaptive observation and offer the basis to apply adaptive observation in practical weather forecast on the high impact weather.However,there are also many challenges existing in the adaptive observation.
