Abstract:Abstract In the decoration of houses, the use of decoration materials will often produce formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, radon and other harmful substances, so there will be air pollution, water pollution and other pollution problems, seriously affecting the indoor environment, serious harm to human health. To study how the decoration of houses causes serious pollution to the indoor environment. And the main pollutants in the decoration material formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia and radon for specific analysis, to understand the decoration materials in the main pollutants on the indoor environment pollution and damage to human health and life. Through the study, it is found that decoration materials can cause serious pollution. We must pay attention to this, and take certain measures to deal with, to create a low-carbon, green and comfortable living environment.
[Health damage of indoor air pollution by decoration on residents]

Abstract:Objective: To explore the health damage of indoor air pollution on residents by detecting the major indoor air pollutants and surveying the health indexes of residents. Methods: 159 decorated houses were divided into 2 groups by whether the concentration of formaldehyde exceeded national standard. To analyze the health damage of formaldehyde and TVOC on residents, respectively. Results: The concentrations of formaldehyde of the over standard group and the corresponding under standard group were (0.170 +/- 0.075) mg/m3 and (0.064 +/- 0.022) mg/m3, the concentrations of TVOC of the over standard group and the corresponding under standard group were (2.033 +/- 1.161) mg/m3 and (0.271 +/- 0.142) mg/m3. The incidence of the fatigue, nausea, eye symptoms, symptoms of nose, throat dessication, skin dessication, skin itching sensation and red swelling of the skin of the over standard group was significantly increased than that of the corresponding under standard group (P < 0.05). The incidence of the nausea, skin itching sensation and breathe hard of the TVOC over standard group was significantly increased than that of the corresponding under standard group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Formaldehyde or TVOC will cause severe health damage.

Therefore, the health impact is complicated, affecting different organs and systems of human being such as respiratory and immune system. The main indoor air pollutants are the combustion products from smoking, cooking and heating, the chemical pollutants from renovation materials and the biological contaminants. The kinds, sources and health impacts of these pollutants that affect the indoor air quality are reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:Objective To study the pollution levels,characteristics,causes and related adverse effects of indoor volatile organic compounds(VOCs) on human health after decoration. Methods The concentration of indoor air formaldehyde and TVOC were detected,meanwhile the adverse health effects were investigated by questionnaires. Result The results showed that the houses in which formaldehyde concentration exceeded the national indoor air quality standard occupied 47.1%, and three months later, the rate still was 40%,the highest level was 6.56 times of the standard. While the rate of exceed the national standard of TVOC was 76% within one month and 0% three months later respectively. As far as the concerned subjective syndromes, only the complaint of disgusted smell was significantly different between those who lived in newly decorated rooms and those who lived in the houses which taken as the control. Conclusion Now the pollution level of VOCs caused by decoration is some lower than before,but the pollution of formaldehyde was still pervasive and serious. The causes of pollution lay in artificial board materials used for furniture and decoration. Moreover, the complaints of the discomfort of eyes and upper respiratory tract will increase as people moved in the newly decorated rooms.

Abstract:Indoor air pollutants were monitored in 138 households in urban Xi'an that were recently decorated, and the concentrations of formaldehyde, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), amines, benzene, methylbenzol, xylene, and radon were monitored in the bedrooms, sitting rooms, dinning rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and studies of the houses. The most seriously elevated pollutants were TVOC and formaldehyde, whose rates exceeded standards by 69.8% and 60.8%, respectively. Ammonia was 13.2% above the standard, and xylene was 8.7% above the standard. The level of radon in 100% of the rooms was below the standard. Only for formaldehyde were there statistically significant differences in concentrations in the sitting room, bedroom, and study (P < 0.05). Concentrations of TVOC, amines, and xylene were positively related to the concentration of formaldehyde in the same room. The concentrations of the major pollutants in summer were highest and had a statistically significant difference with those in other seasons. TVOC and formaldehyde were the most serious pollutants indoors after decorating in an urban area of Xi'an. The concentrations of formaldehyde in the sitting rooms were different than in other types of rooms. Formaldehyde can be a representative of the levels of pollutants indoors; rooms with a higher concentration of formaldehyde tend to have higher levels of other pollutants. In addition, pollutants in the decorated rooms have a strong positive dependence on the monitoring seasons. Summer was the peak time of indoor pollutant levels. Households should pay extra attention to ventilation and take other effective measures to avoid health problems caused by indoor air pollutants.

Abstract:A random survey in six districts of Tianjin City on residents and formaldehyde test of houses that have been decorated for a year and resided,shows that formaldehyde pollution is very serious in decorated houses with a 100% occurrence in the specimens.Only 14% of the surveyed houses are up to the national standard.The ocourrence of respiratory diseases is on an obvious increase accompanied by uncomfortable feelings to different extent,and rarely with some allergies,Green decoration,indoor greenization and suspended residence are some of the basic means to prevent indoor formaldehyde harm to the largest extent.

Abstract:Although indoor air pollution caused by decoration and its consequent influential factors have been spotlighted, information regarding the effect of redecoration are still limited. Therefore, 143 bedrooms were redecorated identically by a specific company, and the concentration of formaldehyde (HCHO), benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) were measured in order to determine the pollution level inside the redecorated sample dwellings, also to obtain the relationship between the mentioned compounds and their influential factors. The median concentration level of HCHO, BTX, and TVOC were 70, 10, and 160 mu g/m3, respectively. 89.51% and 74.83% of the dwellings had adverse exposure level of HCHO and TVOC, respectively, which had the score of 40 based on IAQ indices (where 80 is "good" and 20 is "bad"). 81.82% of the dwellings were at the risk of respiratory symptoms in children, considering the fact that safe exposure limit of 8-h HCHO is 50 mu g/m3 in Canada. Over 86% of the dwellings exceeded the threshold of HCHO set by U.S.Agency Toxic Substances Disease Registry based on health hazard assessments in the relevant toxicological literature. Only 0.7% of all dwellings exceeded health thresholds of TVOC at 600 mu g/m3 from Portuguese and china. There was either a very low level of correlation or no correlation between pollutants, environmental factors, and architectural characteristics, such as temperature, Relative Humidity, building ages, and room volume. HCHO and TVOC concentration in low-rise residences were higher than that of high-rise residences (p < 0.01). Compared to wood flooring, TVOC concentration was higher when tile was used as the flooring material (p < 0.05), due to the use of adhesives.

Abstract:Indoor air quality is of importance for human health since people spent most of their time indoors. Heavy metals (HMs) in indoor air should be concerned since they may increase the incidence of various diseases. However, systematic studies on the occurrences, sources, and health risks of HMs in indoor air were insufficient. Herein, HMs in indoor air were systematically reviewed at a global scale, the characteristics of HMs in different regions, functional areas, and building types were investigated. The results showed that frequent traffic and indoor smoking made Zn occupy the dominant position of HMs in indoor air, accounting for 69.72%. In rural areas, indoor As and Pb were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those in other areas due to burning of inferior fuels. In addition, cooking activities could increase Pb concentrations in residential buildings, reaching 755.32 ± 6556.82 ng/m3. Health risk assessments showed that residents in Southeast Asia and East Asia were at non-carcinogenic risk from multiple HMs (HQ > 1). The use of solid fuels and industrial emissions were the main reasons. This study confirmed the importance of controlling indoor air pollution to reduce its health impact, which can provide useful information for policy makers.

Abstract:Air pollution in the interior of our homes is caused by diverse chemical, physical, and biological entities. This review comprehensively explores the current understanding of sources and health impacts of gaseous and particulate pollutants. Trend analysis of indoor air research worldwide revealed a quantum jump of 2.8 times in the number of publications during the last ten years. Indoor air pollutants are innumerable, but only a few are widely prevalent in most households. The qualitative complexity of pollutants translates to different health problems, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and deaths. There exist wide-scale disparities in the negative impacts among different economic strata, genders, and age groups; children and elderly populations are more vulnerable. In developing countries, pollutants primarily arise from traditional sources, whereas in developed countries, pollutants from non-conventional sources are comparatively significant. Only a few countries have indoor air regulations, policies, monitoring plans and effective enforcement.

Abstract:Identifying air pollutants that pose a potential hazard indoors can facilitate exposure mitigation. In this study, we compiled summary results from 77 published studies reporting measurements of chemical pollutants in residences in the United States and in countries with similar lifestyles. These data were used to calculate representative mid-range and upper-bound concentrations relevant to chronic exposures for 267 pollutants and representative peak concentrations relevant to acute exposures for five activity-associated pollutants. Representative concentrations are compared to available chronic and acute health standards for 97 pollutants. Fifteen pollutants appear to exceed chronic health standards in a large fraction of homes. Nine other pollutants are identified as potential chronic health hazards in a substantial minority of homes, and an additional nine are identified as potential hazards in a very small percentage of homes. Nine pollutants are identified as priority hazards based on the robustness of measured concentration data and the fraction of residences that appear to be impacted: acetaldehyde; acrolein; benzene; 1,3-butadiene; 1,4-dichlorobenzene; formaldehyde; naphthalene; nitrogen dioxide; and PM(2.5). Activity-based emissions are shown to pose potential acute health hazards for PM(2.5), formaldehyde, CO, chloroform, and NO(2).PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This analysis identifies key chemical contaminants of concern in residential indoor air using a comprehensive and consistent hazard-evaluation protocol. The identification of a succinct group of chemical hazards in indoor air will allow for successful risk ranking and mitigation prioritization for the indoor residential environment. This work also indicates some common household activities that may lead to the acute levels of pollutant exposure and identifies hazardous chemicals for priority removal from consumer products and home furnishings.

Abstract:There are several categories of indoor air pollutants. Organic pollutants are the most common ones. This study chooses TVOC and Formaldehyde, two of the typical pollutants, as indicators of evaluating household indoor air pollution and improves the TVOC concentration prediction model through the samples of indoor air taken from 3122 households. This study also categorizes and explains the features of household indoor air pollution based on the TVOC and Formaldehyde models as well as a large amount of sample measurement. Moreover, this study combines the TVOC model with the Formaldehyde model to calculate and verify the critical values of each type of indoor air pollution. In this study, indoor air pollution is categorized into three types: decoration pollution, consumption pollution and transition pollution. During the first 12 months after decoration, decoration pollution is the primary pollution type, both TVOC and Formaldehyde are highly concentrated while sometimes seriously over the standard. Pollutants mainly come from volatile sources. After the first 12 month but before 24 months the indoor air pollution is transition pollution. Both decoration materials and human activates affect the indoor air quality. 24 months after decoration, it transits into consumption pollution. In this stage, the main pollutants come from combustion sources, and concentration of pollutants fluctuates with the appearance and disappearance of the sources.

Abstract:The status of indoor air pollution and its control in China are reviewed by introducing the pollution characteristics of major indoor air pollutants, the strategies and measures adopted to control indoor air pollution, as well as the major problems existing in the current indoor air pollution control. Although indoor pollution of formaldehyde and benzene has been effectively alleviated in recent years in China, indoor pollution of toluene and xylenes is still serious. Besides, studies show that indoor pollution of particulate matter (PM), biological pollutants, and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) might also be serious in China. The establishment and implementation of indoor air quality (IAQ)-related regulations and standards, the research on indoor air pollution and its control, and the development of indoor environmental monitoring and cleaning industry have played significant roles in preventing and controlling indoor air pollution in China. However, problems such as lack of mandatory standards for IAQ, lack of regulation and labeling of pollutant emissions from indoor decorating and refurbishing materials, lack of an effective performance evaluation system for air cleaning products, and lack of proper maintenance of air cleaners remain to be solved for further improvement of IAQ.

Abstract:(1) Background: There is increasing awareness that the quality of the indoor environment affects our health and well-being. Indoor air quality (IAQ) in particular has an impact on multiple health outcomes, including respiratory and cardiovascular illness, allergic symptoms, cancers, and premature mortality. (2) Methods: We carried out a global systematic literature review on indoor exposure to selected air pollutants associated with adverse health effects, and related household characteristics, seasonal influences and occupancy patterns. We screened records from six bibliographic databases: ABI/INFORM, Environment Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, PubMed, ProQuest Biological and Health Professional, and Scopus. (3) Results: Information on indoor exposure levels and determinants, emission sources, and associated health effects was extracted from 141 studies from 29 countries. The most-studied pollutants were particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10); nitrogen dioxide (NO2); volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, xylenes and formaldehyde; and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including naphthalene. Identified indoor PM2.5 sources include smoking, cooking, heating, use of incense, candles, and insecticides, while cleaning, housework, presence of pets and movement of people were the main sources of coarse particles. Outdoor air is a major PM2.5 source in rooms with natural ventilation in roadside households. Major sources of NO2 indoors are unvented gas heaters and cookers. Predictors of indoor NO2 are ventilation, season, and outdoor NO2 levels. VOCs are emitted from a wide range of indoor and outdoor sources, including smoking, solvent use, renovations, and household products. Formaldehyde levels are higher in newer houses and in the presence of new furniture, while PAH levels are higher in smoking households. High indoor particulate matter, NO2 and VOC levels were typically associated with respiratory symptoms, particularly asthma symptoms in children. (4) Conclusions: Household characteristics and occupant activities play a large role in indoor exposure, particularly cigarette smoking for PM2.5, gas appliances for NO2, and household products for VOCs and PAHs. Home location near high-traffic-density roads, redecoration, and small house size contribute to high indoor air pollution. In most studies, air exchange rates are negatively associated with indoor air pollution. These findings can inform interventions aiming to improve IAQ in residential properties in a variety of settings.
