Abstract:We are concerned with the formation of singularities and the existence of global continuous solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional nonisentropic Euler equations for compressible fluids. For the isentropic Euler equations, we pinpoint a necessary and sufficient condition for the formation of singularities of solutions with large initial data that allow a far-field vacuum-there exists a compression in the initial data. For the nonisentropic Euler equations, we identify a sufficient condition for the formation of singularities of solutions with large initial data that allow a far-field vacuum-there exists a strong compression in the initial data. Furthermore, we identify two new phenomena-decompression and de-rarefaction-for the nonisentropic Euler flows, different from the isentropic flows, via constructing two respective solutions. For the decompression phenomenon, we construct a first global continuous nonisentropic solution, even though the initial data contain a weak compression, by solving a backward Goursat problem, so that the solution is smooth, except on several characteristic curves across which the solution has a weak discontinuity (i.e., only Lipschitz continuity). For the de-rarefaction phenomenon, we construct a continuous nonisentropic solution whose initial data contain isentropic rarefactions (i.e., without compression) and a locally stationary varying entropy profile, for which the solution still forms a shock wave in a finite time.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the global existence of supersonic entropy solutions with a strong contact discontinuity over a Lipschitz wall governed by the two-dimensional steady exothermically reacting Euler equations, when the total variation of both the initial data and slope of the Lipschitz wall is sufficiently small. Local and global estimates are developed and a modified Glimm-type functional is carefully designed. Next the validation of the quasi-one-dimensional approximation in the domain bounded by the wall and the strong contact discontinuity is rigorous justified by proving that the difference between the average of weak solution and the solution of quasi-one-dimensional system can be bounded by the square of the total variation of both the initial data and slope of the Lipschitz wall.

Abstract:This paper establishes the global existence of smooth solutions to the 2D isentropic and irrotational Euler equations for Chaplygin gases with a general class of short pulse initial data, which, in particular, resolves in this special case, the Majda's conjecture on the non-formation of shock waves of solutions from smooth initial data for multi-dimensional nonlinear symmetric systems which are totally linearly degenerate. Comparing to the 4D case, the major difficulties in this paper are caused by the slower time decay and the largeness of the solutions to the 2D quasilinear wave equation, some new auxiliary energies and multipliers are introduced to overcome these difficulties.

Abstract:It is proven that a class of the generalized Riemann problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with the uniform damping term admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only n shock waves with small amplitude on t⩾0 and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the similarity solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding homogeneous Riemann problem. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global shock solutions, piecewise continuous and piecewise smooth solution with shock discontinuities, of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with a single jump initial data. We also give an example to show that the uniform damping mechanism is not strong enough to prevent the formation of shock waves.

Abstract:For 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of polytropic gases, S. Alinhac establishes that the axisymmetric smooth solution blows up. In the present paper, for 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations of Chaplygin gases, we show that the small perturbed smooth solution exists globally when the rotationally invariant initial data are a perturbation of size ε>0 of a rest state. Near the light cone, 2D Euler equations of Chaplygin gases can be transformed into a second order quasilinear wave equation, which satisfies both the null conditions. This will lead to that the corresponding second order quasilinear wave equation admits a global smooth solution near the light cone. However, away from the light cone, the hydrodynamical waves have no decay in time and strongly affect the related acoustical waves. By introducing a nonlinear ODE, we can distinguish the fast decay part and non-decay part so that the global energy estimates are derived.

Abstract:We are concerned with the two-dimensional steady supersonic reacting Euler flow past Lipschitz bending walls that are small perturbations of a convex one, and establish the existence of global entropy solutions when the total variation of both the initial data and the slope of the boundary is sufficiently small. The flow is governed by an ideal polytropic gas and undergoes a one-step exothermic chemical reaction under the reaction rate function that is Lipschtiz and has a positive lower bound. The heat released by the reaction may cause the total variation of the solution to increase along the flow direction. We employ the modified wave-front tracking scheme to construct approximate solutions and develop a Glimm-type functional by incorporating the approximate strong rarefaction waves and Lipschitz bending walls to obtain the uniform bound on the total variation of the approximate solutions. Then we employ this bound to prove the convergence of the approximate solutions to a global entropy solution that contains a strong rarefaction wave generated by the Lipschitz bending wall. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of the entropy solution in the flow direction is also analyzed.

Abstract:For the Cauchy problem with a kind of non-smooth initial data for weakly linearly degenerate hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with the linear damping term, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global weakly discontinuous solution u = u(t, x) containing only n weak discontinuities with small amplitude on t ≥ 0, and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the similarity solution $u = U(\frac{x}{t})$ of the corresponding homogeneous Riemann problem. Supersonic flows with a contact discontinuity to the two-dimensional steady rotating Euler system

Abstract:This paper concerns the structural stability of supersonic flows with a contact discontinuity in a finitely long curved nozzle for the two-dimensional steady compressible rotating Euler system. Concerning the effect of Coriolis force, we first establish the existence of supersonic shear flows with a contact discontinuity in the flat nozzle. Then we consider the stability of these background supersonic shear flows with a contact discontinuity when the incoming supersonic flow and the upper and lower nozzle walls are suitably perturbed. The problem can be formulated as an initial boundary value problem with a contact discontinuity as a free boundary. To deal with the free boundary value problem, the Lagrangian transformation is introduced to straighten and fix the contact discontinuity. The rotating Euler system is reduced to a first order hyperbolic system for the Riemann invariants. We design an iteration scheme and derive some estimates for the solution to the hyperbolic system. Finally, by using the inverse Lagrangian transformation, we prove the original free boundary problem admits two layers of smooth supersonic flows separated by a smooth contact discontinuity.

Global well-posedness and large-time behavior of classical solutions to the Euler-Navier-Stokes system in R^3

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a two-phase flow system consisting of the compressible isothermal Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force, which can be formally derived from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. When the initial data is a small perturbation around an equilibrium state, we prove the global well-posedness of the classical solutions to this system and show the solutions tends to the equilibrium state as time goes to infinity. In order to resolve the main difficulty arising from the pressure term of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we properly use the Hodge decomposition, spectral analysis, and energy method to obtain the $L^2$ time decay rates of the solution when the initial perturbation belongs to $L^1$ space. Furthermore, we show that the above time decay rates are optimal.

Abstract:The Riemann problem for a two-dimensional 2 x 2 nonstrictly hyperbolic system of nonlinear conservation laws has been considered for constant initial data having discontinuities on three rays with vertex at the origin. The solutions are constructed for some one-J and non-R initial data. One kind of new discontinuity, which is labelled as the delta-shock wave, appears in some solutions. The delta-shock wave is a discontinuity plane that is the suport of a generalized function.

Abstract:This present paper is dedicated to the study of the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional Euler-Boussinesq-B$\rm\acute{e}$nard equations which couple the incompressible Euler equations for the velocity and a transport equation with critical dissipation for the temperature. We show that there is a global unique solution to this model with Yudovich's type data. This settles the global regularity problem which was remarked by Wu and Xue (J. Differential Equations 253:100--125, 2012).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the half space problem for Euler equations with damping in 3-D. We restudy the fundamental solution for the Cauchy problem to obtain an exponentially sharp pointwise structure and a clear decomposition of the singular-regular components. Later, both Green's function for initial boundary value problem and fundamental solutions for Cauchy problems are investigated in the transformed domain after Laplace transform. The symbols are obtained and a connection between Green's function and fundamental solutions are established for the pointwise space–time structure of Green's function. Finally, the sharp estimates for Green's function together with a priori estimates from the energy method for high order derivatives result in the nonlinear stability of the solution and also the decaying rates.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two-dimensional Riemann boundary value problems of Euler system for the isentropic and irrotational Chaplygin gas with initial data being two constant states given in two sectors respectively, where one sector is a quadrant and the other one has an acute vertex angle. We prove that the Riemann boundary value problem admits a global self-similar solution, if either the initial states are close, or the smaller sector is also near a quadrant. Our result can be applied to solving the problem of shock reflection by a ramp.

Abstract:We establish the global existence and the asymptotic behavior for the 2D incompressible isotropic elastodynamics for sufficiently small, smooth initial data in the Eulerian coordinates formulation. The main tools used to derive the main results are, on the one hand, a modified energy method to derive the energy estimate and, on the other hand, a Fourier transform method with a suitable choice of Z-norm to derive the sharp $L^\infty $-estimate. We mention that the global existence of the same system but in the Lagrangian coordinates formulation was recently obtained by Lei (Global well-posedness of incompressible Elastodynamics in 2D, 2014). Our goal is to improve the understanding of the behavior of solutions. Also, we present a different approach to study 2D nonlinear wave equations from the point of view in frequency space.

Abstract:We establish the global-in-time existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the full Navier–Stokes equations for compressible heat-conducting flow in multidimensions with initial data that are large, discontinuous, spherically symmetric, and away from the vacuum. The solutions obtained here are of global finite total relative-energy including the origin, while cavitation may occur as balls centred at the origin of symmetry for which the interfaces between the fluid and the vacuum must be upper semi-continuous in space-time in the Eulerian coordinates. On any region strictly away from the possible vacuum, the velocity and specific internal energy are Hölder continuous, and the density has a uniform upper bound. To achieve this, our main strategy is to regard the Cauchy problem as the limit of a series of carefully designed initial-boundary value problems that are formulated in finite annular regions. For such approximation problems, we can derive uniform a priori estimates that are independent of both the inner and outer radii of the annuli considered in the spherically symmetric Lagrangian coordinates. The entropy inequality is recovered after taking the limit of the outer radius to infinity by using Mazur’s lemma and the convexity of the entropy function, which is required for the limit of the inner radius tending to zero. Then the global weak solutions of the original problem are attained via careful compactness arguments applied to the approximate solutions in the Eulerian coordinates.
