Abstract:While approaching the target body, the deep-space probe is orbiting hyperbolically before the maneuver. We discuss the variation of perturbed hyperbolic orbit using the method similar to that used in elliptic orbit. Ephemeris calculating and orbit control will benefit from the given analytical solution.

Abstract:Due to the specific dynamics, the probes located at the halo orbits or Lissajous orbits around the Earth-Moon collinear libration point L1 or L2 are always studied in the synodic system to understand their trajectories. In fact, they are also orbiting the Earth in a distant Keplerian ellipse. Because of their intrinsic orbital instability, in the orbit prediction the initial errors propagate more prominently than those of the normal orbiting satellites, this requires special attention in the orbit design, maneuver, and control. Despite of all this, they are similar to the normal orbiting satellites in orbit determination and hardly require other special attentions. In this paper, the quantitative results of error propagation under the unstable dynamics, together with the theoretical analysis are presented. The results of precise orbit determination and short-arc orbit predictions are also shown, and compared with the results from the Beijing Aerospace Control Center.

Abstract:Generally,there are three stages to send a deep space exploration spacecraft to its nominal orbit: parking orbit around the earth,transfer orbit and nominal orbit around the targeted celestial body.The operation status in each stage and corresponding mathematical models are different.In particular,the transfer orbit is vastly different from orbits around the targeted celestial body,and studies have been widely made on such differences in deep space exploration,e.g.halo orbit around collinear libration points and energy saving by swing-by.Nevertheless,all orbits in the solar system have a common elementary feature: they all can be described by Keplerian orbits(or variational Keplerian orbits) with Newton's gravitation law.This paper probes into different mathematical models,methods and research results for different orbits in combination with projects we have accomplished over the years.
Orbits of Orbiting Probes Around Planets, Moon and Small Celestial Bodies

Abstract:The features of orbiting probes around celestial major bodies are discussed. The major bodies are selected with different physical characteristics, depending on their masses which determine the influence sphere and their density distributions and shapes which determine the gravity field. The possible motions and different characteristics of the orbiting probes around respective celestial bodies are discussed in detail, together with the discussion on two forms of formation flying. Lunar probes, whose energy dissipation is not a concern as for planetary probes, still have a problem on orbit life. Since the lunar mass distribution is not uniform, the orbit life is closely related to the orbit inclination. For Mars probes, although similar phenomenon exists, the rela- tion with orbit inclination is different. These major features of orbit variation can be used to serve the orbit design and selection in deep space exploration.

Abstract:A design method for a new kind of deep space mission which departs from a circumlunar orbit of the lunar base is presented in this paper. The difference between this kind of deep space mission and the traditional one is well analyzed. The method of patched conics is employed to divide the mission trajectory into four independent parts. The independent selenocentric segment is designed using a Lambert Problem based method, while the geocentric trajectory from a certain point in three-dimensional space to a fixed excess velocity vector is determined analytically. Then the combination of these segments is optimized via genetic algorithm by minimizing the total velocity increasement. Finally, typically numerical simulations are demonstrated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The motion around the collinear libration points in the restricted three body problem is unstable. But there exist conditionally stable periodic orbits around these points. Special-purpose space probes located in the vicinity of these points (e.g., ISEE-3, SOHO) can benefit from this dynamical property, in regard to maintaining the orbit in position and the energy required of placing the probe in position. As an example, we study in this paper the launch and orbital control of a space probe around the L1 libration point in the system consisting of the Sun and the Earth-Moon. We present some theoretical and numerical simulations’ results, which may serve as a basis for the realization of such a space probe in future.

Abstract:Using inter-satellite range data, the combined autonomous orbit determination problem of a lunar satellite and a probe on some special orbits is studied in this paper. The problem is firstly studied in the circular restricted three-body problem, and then generalized to the real force model of the Earth-Moon system. Two kinds of special orbits are discussed: collinear libration point orbits and distant retrograde orbits. Studies show that the orbit determination accuracy in both cases can reach that of the observations. Some important properties of the system are carefully studied. These findings should be useful in the future engineering implementation of this conceptual study.

Abstract:The interest of exploring small body has been growing over these years, especially the near Earth asteroids which have potential threat to the Earth. The masses of the asteroids are mostly very small compared with that of the planets, so the asteroids' central gravity is too small to have the probe orbit them directly all the time. Therefore, it is necessary to study the orbits around a micro gravity asteroid. In the paper, two kinds of nominal orbits are proposed. One is the quasi-period orbits around the collinear libration point; the other is the formation flying orbits around the asteroid. Due to the inevitable existence of errors, station keeping of the probe is necessary. Solar sails propulsion is used to provide station-keeping at nominal orbits. There are two control techniques including solar sail area variation and solar sail pitch and yaw angle variation considered. Also optimal control laws are used to minimize the control requirements in this paper. Finally, the control results are displayed.

Abstract:It is desirable to design low-altitude and near-polar science orbits for missions to Galilean moons. However, the long-term perturbation from a distant perturber may lead such a kind of orbits to quick impacts, indicating that initial conditions of working orbits need to be well-designed. To this end, long-lifetime working orbits around oblate satellites are investigated in this work. Initially, numerical maps of lifetime around oblate satellites are produced under the long-term dynamical model and they show that initial conditions of long-lifetime orbits are distributed in the form of strips in the space spanned by initial longitude of ascending node and argument of pericenter. This phenomenon is known to be caused by the effect of nodal phasing due to the existence of the mother planet's obliquity. To understand the mechanism of nodal phasing, we adopt Lie-series transformation to formulate an integrable Hamiltonian model, where the dynamical structures in phase space can be uncovered by phase portraits. Furthermore, we provide three constraints for solving the initial conditions of long-lifetime orbits: the first one states that the Hamiltonian of long-lifetime orbits should be equal to that of the stable manifold, the second and third ones are associated to given initial eccentricity and inclination. By solving these constraint equations and performing direct transformation, analytical strips are produced. It is shown that the analytical and numerical strips are in good agreement. At last, the analytical approach is applied to missions to Galilean moons.

Abstract:The flight trajectories from low earth parking orbit (LEO) to low lunar parking orbit (LLO) based on a planar three-body model are studied. Trajectories and some key parameters of the three stages, the earth escape stage, coast arc stage, and lunar capture stage, are presented as well. The concept of “coverage apogee” and the selenocentric energy are first, respectively, introduced to accomplish the terminal point determination of the earth escape stage and the initial point determination of the lunar capture stage.

Abstract:This paper deals with the existence and stability of periodic attitude motion near hyperbolic precession (HP) for a dynamically symmetric rigid body (RB) with its center of mass moving along an elliptical orbit. We present the definitions of undisturbed and disturbed periodic attitude motions, and approximate analytical solutions for them are derived using the multiscale method under non-resonance, internal resonance, and combination resonance conditions. Based on the definition of Lyapunov stability, we demonstrate stability in the non-resonant case and establish the conditions require for stability in the internal resonance scenario and a numerical analysis supports the theoretical results. The findings of this study extend classical results on RB dynamics in central gravitational fields. These insights demonstrate that appropriate parameter selection can achieve stable periodic attitude motion for RBs is in elliptical orbits, offering practical implications for spacecraft attitude control and mission reliability.

Abstract:A new concept of three dimensional non-Keplerian trajectories with double angular momentum reversal is investigated with high performance solar sails. The main discussion of this paper is about such 3D solar inverse orbits with inner constraints. The problem is addressed in a time optimal control framework solved by an indirect method. Two typical solar inverse orbits have been achieved and presented in a 3D non-dimensional dynamic model in the Heliocentric Inertial Frame. Starting from the Earth orbit ecliptic plane, a sailcraft in the inverse orbit exhibits a butterfly shape trajectory. As such, the new orbits are symmetrical with respect to a plane which contains the Sun-perihelion line. The relation of the sail attitude angles between the two symmetrical parts of the orbits are used to reduce the simulation effort. The quasi-heliostationary property at its aphelia is demonstrated with variation of the orbital radius. Evolutions of the orbital velocity and optimal sail orientations are also outlined and discussed to benefit future design work. As is suited for space observation guaranteed by its butterfly shape, the inverse orbits are thoroughly studied in terms of the concerned parameters. The discussion of the parametric influence is ranked in order as perihelion distance r E , required maximum position z max, perihelion position z f and the sail lightness number β. Suitable ranges of each parameter are adopted to illustrate the orbital variation trend. Through numerical simulations the features of such inverse orbits are further emphasized to provide an initial reference for future researchers.
Autonomous Orbit Determination of Deep Space Probe Based on the Sun Line-of-sight Vector

Abstract:In this paper, two types of autonomous navigation method based on the Sun line-of-sight (LOS) vector are proposed for the problem of orbit determination of deep space probe. The radial velocity of the spacecraft relative to the Sun is measured by a spectrometer, and the LOS vector of the reference celestial body relative to the spacecraft is measured by the onboard camera. Then, two kinds of observation scheme, one is based on the Sun information and the other is based on the line-of-sight information, are constructed combined with the LOS vector from the spacecraft to the Sun. The fundamental of the observation schemes are analyzed and the observation equations are educed in detail. The orbit parameters of the spacecraft are estimated by utilizing extended Kalman filter. Finally, the autonomous navigation methods presented are verified by the practical data of Deep Impact mission.

Abstract:Confirmed small-body missions Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) and Hera are set to explore Martian moons and the binary asteroid Didymos’s moon Dimorphos, respectively. Orbital dynamics around these small moons differ substantially from those around previously visited targets. Simplified models, such as the circular-restricted three-body problem, cannot yield accurate predictions for orbits and their stability in real-world operations. To be specific, the orbit of the small moon and its vicinity are significantly perturbed by the oblateness of the planet and their relative positions. Realistic control constraints and the unstable 3:1 resonance of retrograde orbits further complicate orbit maintenance around a small moon. Therefore, minimizing the dynamical perturbation on baseline orbits resulting from model mismatches is crucial. This paper introduces the J2-ER3BP+GH model dedicated to describing the orbital dynamics around the small moon. It incorporates the [Formula: see text] perturbation of the planet on the elliptic-restricted three-body problem and can accommodate a nonspherical gravity field of the moon. Bounded orbits can still be identified without much effort in this sophisticated model. Baseline orbits around Phobos and Dimorphos from the J2-ER3BP+GH model become much easier to maintain, as verified in the high-fidelity dynamic and control environments.

Transfer from the Earth to a Lissajous Orbit Around the Collinear Libration Point by Lunar Swing-by

Abstract:Collinear libration points of the restricted three body problem (RTBP) play a key role in deep space exploration, due to the fact that they are ideal locations for the spacecraft (such as SOHO) with special purposes. The nominal orbit of the spacecraft is conditionally stable but virtually unstable, and will exponentially diverge from the nominal orbit under small perturbations. If the spacecraft is inserted to the stable manifold associated with the collinear libration points, it will approach the nominal orbit without any more maneuvers, and the total fuel consumption will be reduced. For the nominal orbit of small amplitude, the manifold can not approach the Earth. In this case a direct transfer from the parking orbit, such as low earth orbit (LEO) around the vicinity of the Earth to the manifold will be impossible. Nevertheless, in the real solar system, the Moon bends some of the manifolds to approach the Earth. Based on this consideration, this paper takes the transfer of a spacecraft around L2 of the Sun–Earth system as an example and study the Lunar effect in the transfer of the spacecraft. With the help of the Moon, in the case the transfer could be still not achieved with only one maneuver, but the total fuel consumption is saved by around 100m/s.

Abstract:The two-body interception problem with an upper-bounded tangent impulse for the interceptor on an elliptic parking orbit to collide with a nonmaneuvering target on a hyperbolic orbit is studied. Firstly, four special initial true anomalies whose velocity vectors are parallel to either of the lines of asymptotes for the target hyperbolic orbit are obtained by using Newton-Raphson method. For different impulse points, the solution-existence ranges of the target true anomaly for any conic transfer are discussed in detail. Then, the time-of-flight equation is solved by the secant method for a single-variable piecewise function about the target true anomaly. Considering the sphere of influence of the Earth and the upper bound on the fuel, all feasible solutions are obtained for different impulse points. Finally, a numerical example is provided to apply the proposed technique for all feasible solutions and the global minimum-time solution with initial coasting time.

Abstract:A novel station-keeping strategy leveraging periodic revolutions of homeomorphic orbits in the Elliptic Restricted Three-Body Problem within the pulsating frame is presented. A systemic approach founded on arc-length continuation is presented for the discovery, computation, and classification of periodic revolutions that morph from their traditional circular restricted three-body counterparts to build an a priori dataset. The dataset is comprehensive in covering all possible geometric architectures of the restricted problem. Shape similarity is quantified using Hausdorff distance and works as a filter for the station-keeping algorithm in relation to appropriate target conditions. Finally, an efficient scheme to quantify impulsive orbit maintenance maneuvers that minimize the total fuel cost is presented. The proposed approach is salient in its generic applicability across any elliptic three-body system and any periodic orbit family. Finally, average annual station-keeping costs using the described methodology are quantified for selected "orbits of interest" in the cis-lunar and the Sun–Earth systems. The robustness and efficacy of the approach instill confidence in its applicability for realistic mission design scenarios.

Abstract:The dynamics of the collinear libration points in the restricted three-body problem was stated systematically. The ways to compute the centre manifold and hyperbolic manifold around these points were introduced, and some computation examples were given. Based on the dynamics, Two applications were discussed. One was the orbit control of the spacecrafts around the collinear libration points, and the other is energy-saving transitions via the collinear libration points using their strong instability.

Abstract:The orbit transfer strategy of geosynchronous spacecraft (GEO) is investigated in this paper. This method is suitable for the observation of GEO spacecraft before On-Orbit Servicing (OOS). Considering the computation, terminal constraint conditions (illumination condition, latitude deviation) and fuel consumption, Hohmann transfer and two-body mechanics model are adopted to simplify the mission process. In view of the difference between two-body mechanics model and High-Precision Orbit Propagator (HPOP) model, final time will be predicted precisely. By optimizing the final included angle of two spacecraft position vectors, the results got by two-body model can be used to HPOP model to simulate the real mission scenario. With the proposed method, complex perturbations can be ignored. Finally, the results of several numerical simulations demonstrate the validness of the proposed method on trajectory designing for observation of the spacecraft.
On Orbit Control Utilizing Solar Sails Around Asteroids

Abstract:The interest of exploring asteroids has been growing over these years due to their primordial origins and possible economic benefits. The gravities of the asteroids are mostly very small and irregular, so it is necessary to study the orbits around them with special treatment. In this paper, two kinds of nominal orbits for probes are firstly proposed. One kind is around the collinear libration points of the restricted three-body problem formed with the Sun, the asteroid and the probe. The other kind is the formation flying orbits around the asteroid. Due to the inevitable existence of errors in practice, station keeping of these two kinds of nominal orbits is necessary. Solar sail propulsion is used in this paper. Two control techniques including varying the solar sail area and varying the solar sail pitch and yaw angles are considered. The linear optimal feedback control law is used. Numerical simulations are made to both kinds of nominal orbits. The results show that the controlled orbits converge to the vicinity of the nominal orbits rapidly. The technique of varying the solar sail pitch and yaw angles is better than varying the solar sail area.

Abstract:Compared with the circular restricted three-body problem, various perturbations exist in the real Earth–Moon system. Out of them, the ones from the Moon’s orbit eccentricity and the Sun are the most prominent. For mission design around the collinear libration points in this system, these two perturbations should be taken into consideration. In fact, the collinear libration points are not equilibrium points anymore due to these perturbations. Instead, special quasi-periodic orbits called dynamical substitutes around them exist, playing the role of time-varying equilibrium points. Generally, these dynamical substitutes are unstable, thus station-keeping is necessary for probes around them. In the paper, a short description of the dynamical properties of these dynamical substitutes was made. Then two station-keeping strategies were proposed for small amplitude motions around them. The first strategy has no requirements on the motion amplitude in the x–y plane while the second one has. Taking the point L2 as an example, some numerical simulations were made. Motions with amplitude of 380km and 3800km were studied. It turns out that the cost of the two station-keeping strategies increases with increasing amplitude. Besides, the second strategy generally costs more than the first one.
