Abstract:The shear viscosity of a gluon gas is calculated using the Green-Kubo relation. Time correlations of the energy-momentum tensor in thermal equilibrium are extracted from microscopic simulations using a parton cascade solving various Boltzmann collision processes. We find that the pQCD based gluon bremsstrahlung described by Gunion-Bertsch processes significantly lowers the shear viscosity by a factor of 3-8 compared to elastic scatterings. The shear viscosity scales with the coupling as 1/(alpha_s^2\log(1/alpha_s)). For a constant coupling constant the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio has no dependence on temperature. Replacing the pQCD-based collision angle distribution of binary scatterings by an isotropic form decreases the shear viscosity by a factor of 3.

Abstract:The shear viscosity eta and entropy density 8 of a hadron gas with zero baryon number density are calculated using the Chapman-Enskog and virial expansion approaches, respectively. Interactions are included via the K-matrix parametrization of cross sections preserving the unitarity of the S-matrix. In the four component mixture (pi - K - N - eta), a total of 57 resonances up to 2 GeV mass are included. Interactions forming resonances reduce the magnitude of eta and increase 8, both effects serving to progressively reduce eta/s as the temperature nears the QCD phase transition temperature.

Abstract:The relation of the shear viscosity coefficient to the recently introduced transport rate is derived within relativistic kinetic theory. We calculate the shear viscosity over entropy ratio eta/s for a gluon gas, which involves elastic gg-->gg perturbative QCD (PQCD) scatterings as well as inelastic gg<-->ggg PQCD bremsstrahlung. For alpha_{s}=0.3 we find eta/s=0.13 and for alpha_{s}=0.6, eta/s=0.076. The small eta/s values, which suggest strongly coupled systems, are due to the gluon bremsstrahlung incorporated.

Abstract:Using Grad's method, we calculate the entropy production and derive a formula for the second-order shear viscosity coefficient in a one-dimensionally expanding particle system, which can also be considered out of chemical equilibrium. For a one-dimensional expansion of gluon matter with Bjorken boost invariance, the shear tensor and the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio eta/s are numerically calculated by an iterative and self-consistent prescription within the second-order Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics and by a microscopic parton cascade transport theory. Compared with eta/s obtained using the Navier-Stokes approximation, the present result is about 20% larger at a QCD coupling alpha(s) similar to 0.3 (with eta/s approximate to 0.18) and is a factor of 2-3 larger at a small coupling alpha(s) similar to 0.01. We demonstrate an agreement between the viscous hydrodynamic calculations and the microscopic transport results on eta/s, except when employing a small alpha(s). On the other hand, we demonstrate that for such small alpha(s) the gluon system is far from kinetic and chemical equilibrium, which indicates the break down of second-order hydrodynamics because of the strong nonequilibrium evolution. In addition, for large alpha(s) (0.3-0.6), the Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics formally breaks down at large momentum p(tau) greater than or similar to 3 GeV but is still a reasonably good approximation.

Abstract:With the new viscous hydrodynamic + hadron cascade hybrid code VISHNU, a rather precise (O(25%)) extraction of the QGP shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP from heavy-ion elliptic flow data is possible if the initial eccentricity of the collision fireball is known with <5% accuracy. At this point, eccentricities from initial state models differ by up to 20%, leading to an O(100%) uncertainty for (eta/s)_QGP. It is shown that a simultaneous comparison of elliptic and triangular flow, v_2 and v_3, puts strong constraints on initial state models and can largely eliminate the present uncertainty in (eta/s)_QGP. The variation of the differential elliptic flow v_2(p_T) for identified hadrons between RHIC and LHC energies provides additional tests of the evolution model.

Abstract:Among the key features of hot and dense QCD matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC is its very low shear viscosity, indicative of the properties of a near-ideal fluid, and a large opacity demonstrated by jet energy loss measurements. In this work, we utilize a microscopic transport model based on the Boltzmann equation with quark and gluon degrees of freedom and cross sections calculated from perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics to simulate an ideal Quark-Gluon-Plasma in full thermal and chemical equilibrium. We then use the Kubo formalism to calculate the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the medium as a function of temperature and system composition. One of our key results is that the shear viscosity over entropy-density ratio $\eta/s$ becomes invariant to the chemical composition of the system when plotted as a function of energy-density instead of temperature.

Abstract:Shear viscosity \eta and entropy density s of a hadronic resonance gas are calculated using the Chapman-Enskog and virial expansion methods using the K-matrix parametrization of hadronic cross sections which preserves the unitarity of the T -matrix. In the \pi-K-N-\eta- mixture considered, a total of 57 resonances up to 2 GeV were included. Comparisons are also made to results with other hadronic cross sections such as the Breit-Wigner (BW) and, where available, experimental phase shift parametrizations. Hadronic interactions forming resonances are shown to decrease the shear viscosity and increase the entropy density leading to a substantial reduction of \eta/s as the QCD phase transition temperature is approached.

Abstract:Through model-to-data comparisons from heavy-ion collisions, it has been shown that the Quark Gluon Plasma has an extremely small shear viscosity at vanishing densities. At large baryon densities, significantly less is known about the nature of the shear viscosity from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Within heavy-ion collisions, there are three conserved charges: baryon number (B), strangeness (S), and electric charge (Q). Here we calculate the shear viscosity in two limits using perturbative QCD and an excluded-volume hadron resonance gas at finite BSQ densities. We then develop a framework that interpolates between these two limits such that shear viscosity is possible to calculate across a wide range of finite BSQ densities. We find that the pQCD and hadron resonance gas calculations have different BSQ densities dependence such that a rather non-trivial shear viscosity appears at finite densities.

Abstract:The ratio of shear viscosity (eta) to entropy density (s) for an equilibrated system is investigated in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions below 100A MeV within the framework of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model. After the collision system almost reaches a local equilibration, the temperature, pressure and energy density are obtained from the phase-space information and eta/s is calculated using the Green-Kubo formulas. The results show that eta/s decreases with incident energy and tends toward a smaller value around 0.5, which is not so drastically different from the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results in the present model.

Abstract:We consider an effective field theory description of beyond-quasi-particle excitations aiming to associate the transport properties of the system with the spectral density of states. Tuning various properties of the many-particle correlations, we investigate how the robust microscopic features are translated into the macroscopic observables like shear viscosity and entropy density. The liquid-gas crossover is analysed using several examples. A thermal constraint on the fluidity measure, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, is discussed.

Abstract:We compute the bulk, $\zeta$, and shear, $\eta$, viscosity over entropy density, $s$, for the QCD matter formed in small collision systems at LHC. We consider a scenario of the String Percolation Model by proposing a global form of the color reduction factor that describes both the thermodynamic limit and its maximum deviation due to small-bounded effects. Our method involves estimations at vanishing baryon-chemical potential, assuming local equilibrium for string clusters in the initial state. To compute $\eta/s$, we employed a kinetic approach that accounts QCD states as an ideal gas of partons, while $\zeta/s$ is computed by using two different approaches: a simple kinetic formula and the causal dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics formulation. Our results align with Lattice QCD computations and Bayesian methods and are consistent with holographic conjecture bounds. Furthermore, our findings support the notion of a strongly interacting medium, similar to that observed in nuclear collisions, albeit with a phase transition occurring outside the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:Fast thermalization and elliptic flow of QCD matter found at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are understood as the consequence of perturbative QCD (pQCD) interactions within a (3+1) dimensional parton cascade. The main contributions stem from pQCD-inspired bremsstrahlung. We extract the shear viscosity to entropy ratio, which is between 0.08 and 0.15.

Abstract:In the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we studied the transport properties of QGP. Shear viscosity and non-equilibrium entropy density related to viscous process at finite density has been investigated in weakly coupled limit by using kinetic theory. The results show that the chemical potential increases viscosityyet decreases the non-equilibrium entropy density and thus contributes positively to their ratio compared to the pure temperature case. As to the temperature dependence of the ratio, the ratio first decreases rapidly and then increases in the physical region, presenting a minimum value of 0.4 at the temperature around 182MeV.

Abstract:We explore the shear viscosity of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the full QCD phase diagram within the framework of kinetic theory with the relaxation time approximation based on the $2 \leftrightarrow 2$ elastic scatterings of quark quasiparticles. The temperature and chemical potential dependent masses of particles, including $u, d, s$ quarks, their antiparticles, and exchanged mesons, are calculated in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona Lasinio (PNJL) model. The results indicate that, at small chemical potential, the value of $\eta/s$ has a minimum near the Mott dissociation of mesons and increases rapidly in the lower-temperature side of the chiral crossover phase transition. At large chemical potential (high density), $\eta/s$ in the QGP phase is dominated by the temperature, and the value of $\eta/s$ is greatly enhanced at lower temperature. At intermediate temperature and chemical potential near the QCD phase transition, the situation is relatively complicated. The behavior of $\eta/s$ is influenced by the competition between temperature, density effect, and QCD phase transition.
