The Present Status of Research on Nano-composite Ceramic Tool Materials

Abstract:Mechanical properties of nano-composite ceramics, such as strength and toughness are superior to that of traditional ceramics. Nano-compositing has become an effective way to improve the mechanical properties of traditional ceramics. In this paper, toughening and strengthening mechanisms of nano-composite ceramics are introduced, and the connection between microstructure and mechanical properties of four series of nano-composite ceramics are summarized, whose matrix are alumina, silicon nitride, zirconia and Ti(C, N) ceramics, respectively. Finally, the future research direction of nano-composite ceramics are pointed out.
