Abstract:Max-cut problem is an NP-complete and classical combinatorial optimization problem that has a wide range of applications in different domains, such as bioinformatics, network optimization, statistical physics, and very large scale integration design. In this paper we investigate the capabilities of the ant colony optimization (ACO) heuristic for solving the Max-cut problem and present an AntCut algorithm. A large number of simulation experiments show that the algorithm can solve the Max-cut problem more efficiently and effectively.

Abstract:The maximum flow algorithm has long been known for calculating the minimum edge cut of any two vertices of a connected graph. The original algorithm, however, does not tell us which edges should be taken exactly and therefore there could be more than one way to construct a minimum-edge-cut set. In this paper, we propose a new method to get a minimum-edge-cut set by selecting edges of a graph in the order of betweenness. By comparing with the augmenting path method, it tends to make the two divided parts of a graph more balanced.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient algorithm for solving one sort of region-based active contour models, i.e. the active contours without edges model [1]. We develop the link between traditional level-set based segmentation models and graph based discrete formulation by converting the original PDE based energy function to its discrete form, and show that it can be solved via graph cuts optimization conveniently. We also propose an efficient algorithm to regulate the smoothness of the interfaces, which plays a similar roll as the re-initialization of the signed distance function in solving level sets. Our new algorithm outperforms the traditional PDE driven level set methods in several ways. Firstly, it is significantly faster by taking advantage of the dynamic graph cuts algorithm. Secondly, it is numerically stable and it avoids some original drawbacks in solving PDEs. Furthermore, the new algorithm is less sensitive to the initialization. The experimental results show that the performance improvement is quite significant, which makes it plausible for real-time processing.

Abstract:This paper gives a straightforward implementation of simulated annealing for solving maximum cut problems and compares its performance to that of some existing heuristic solvers. The formulation used is classical, dating to a 1989 paper of Johnson, Aragon, McGeoch, and Schevon. This implementation uses no structure peculiar to the maximum cut problem, but its low per-iteration cost allows it to find better solutions than were previously known for 40 of the 89 standard maximum cut instances tested within a few minutes of computation.

Abstract:We give an algorithm to find a mincut in an $n$-vertex, $m$-edge weighted directed graph using $\tilde O(\sqrt{n})$ calls to any maxflow subroutine. Using state of the art maxflow algorithms, this yields a directed mincut algorithm that runs in $\tilde O(m\sqrt{n} + n^2)$ time. This improves on the 30 year old bound of $\tilde O(mn)$ obtained by Hao and Orlin for this problem.

Abstract:We propose a new arrangement problem on directed graphs, Maximum Directed Linear Arrangement (MaxDLA). This is a directed variant of a similar problem for undirected graphs, in which however one seeks maximum and not minimum; this problem known as the Minimum Linear Arrangement Problem (MinLA) has been much studied in the literature. We establish a number of theorems illustrating the behavior and complexity of MaxDLA. First, we relate MaxDLA to Maximum Directed Cut (MaxDiCut) by proving that every simple digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $\frac{n}{2}$$maxDiCut(D) \leq MaxDLA(D) \leq (n-1)MaxDiCut(D)$. Next, we prove that MaxDiCut is NP-Hard for planar digraphs (even with the added restriction of maximum degree 15); it follows from the above bounds that MaxDLA is also NP-Hard for planar digraphs. In contrast, Hadlock (1975) and Dorfman and Orlova (1972) showed that the undirected Maximum Cut problem is solvable in polynomial time on planar graphs. On the positive side, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for solving MaxDLA on orientations of trees with degree bounded by a constant, which translates to a polynomial-time algorithm for solving MinLA on the complements of those trees. This pairs with results by Goldberg and Klipker (1976), Shiloach (1979) and Chung (1984) solving MinLA in polynomial time on trees. Finally, analogues of Harper's famous isoperimetric inequality for the hypercube, in the setting of MaxDLA, are shown for tournaments, orientations of graphs with degree at most two, and transitive acyclic digraphs.

Abstract:The minimum cut and maximum flow problems form a well-known pair of dual problems providing a min-max relation. Similarly, the continuous relaxation of the minimum multicut problem is the linear dual of a continuous maximum integral multiflow problem. However, both integer multiflow and multicut problems are known to be NP (Nondeterministic Polynomial)-hard and Max SNP (Strongly Nondeterministic Polynomial)-hard problems in unrestricted graphs/networks. In this paper, we formulate the maximum integral multiflow problem as a linear programming model, and propose a method to obtain a minimum multicut set. The proposed model is solved by a commercial optimization toolbox, CPLEX, with promising results, and so the efficiency and effectiveness of the approach are confirmed.

Abstract:The maximum bisection problem (max-bisection) belongs to a family of well-known graph partitioning problems with wide applications. In this study, we develop a simple and efficient local search algorithm called DSLS for max-bisection. The main idea in DSLS is the dynamic step strategy, which automatically adjusts the intensification and diversification to complete the search by changing the length of the step. Moreover, we design an efficient initial constructive method based on the degree information of the vertices, which provides high-quality initial solutions to the DSLS algorithm. In the data preprocessing, a reduction rule is proposed to cut down the size of benchmark graphs and improve the performance of the DSLS algorithm on benchmark graphs. We adopt 71 well-known benchmark graphs to evaluate our algorithm, and the experiments show that the DSLS algorithm is highly competitive with the state-of-the-art heuristic algorithms and discovers improved best-known results (new lower bounds) for 12 benchmark graphs.

Abstract:The Maximum Minimal Cut Problem (MMCP), a NP-hard combinatorial optimization (CO) problem, has not received much attention due to the demanding and challenging bi-connectivity constraint. Moreover, as a CO problem, it is also a daunting task for machine learning, especially without labeled instances. To deal with these problems, this work proposes an unsupervised learning framework combined with heuristics for MMCP that can provide valid and high-quality solutions. As far as we know, this is the first work that explores machine learning and heuristics to solve MMCP. The unsupervised solver is inspired by a relaxation-plus-rounding approach, the relaxed solution is parameterized by graph neural networks, and the cost and penalty of MMCP are explicitly written out, which can train the model end-to-end. A crucial observation is that each solution corresponds to at least one spanning tree. Based on this finding, a heuristic solver that implements tree transformations by adding vertices is utilized to repair and improve the solution quality of the unsupervised solver. Alternatively, the graph is simplified while guaranteeing solution consistency, which reduces the running time. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate our framework and give a specific application. The results demonstrate the superiority of our method against two techniques designed.

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach of using important cuts which allowed us to design significantly faster fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithms for the following routing problems: the Mixed Chinese Postman Problem parameterized by the number of directed edges (Gutin et al., JCSS 2017), the Minimum Shared Edges problem (MSE) parameterized by the number p of paths between two specified vertices (Fluschnik et al., JCSS 2019), and the Weighted Min Cut Prevention problem (Gruttemeier et al., WG 2021). The Minimum Vulnerability problem (MV) is a generalization of MSE (Assadi et al., Algorithmica 2014). The only known FPT algorithm for MV parameterized by p (the same parameter as for MSE) was for chordal graphs (Aoki et al., JCO 2018). We design an FPT algorithm for MV on all undirected graphs.

Abstract:Goemans and Williamson designed a 0.878-approximation algorithm for Max-Cut in undirected graphs [JACM'95]. Khot, Kindler, Mosel, and O'Donnel showed that the approximation ratio of the Goemans-Williamson algorithm is optimal assuming Khot's Unique Games Conjecture [SICOMP'07]. In the problem of maximum cuts in directed graphs (Max-DiCut), in which we seek as many edges going from one particular side of the cut to the other, the situation is more complicated but the recent work of Brakensiek, Huang, Potechin, and Zwick showed that their 0.874-approximation algorithm is tight under the Unique Games Conjecture (up to a small delta)[FOCS'23]. We consider a promise version of the problem and design an SDP-based algorithm which, if given a directed graph G that has a directed cut of value rho, finds an undirected cut in G (ignoring edge directions) with value at least \rho.

Abstract:A class of reachability reduction problems were raised in the area of computer network security and software engineering. This paper studies such a reachability reduction problem on a vertex labeled graph. The reachability reduction here is modeled as maximum reachability preserved cut which is a variant of minimum multiway cut with a new objective function. Finding a maximum reachability preserved cut is to disconnect some labels specified in advance by edge deletion while preserving other reachable labels. It gives a way to model a large family of network problems based on graph model. We provide a comprehensive complexity analysis of this problem under different input settings. A landscape of the hardness hierarchy of this problem is shown in this paper, in which polynomial tractable and intractable cases are identified. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper presents a canonical dual approach for finding either an optimal or approximate solution to the maximum cut problem (MAX CUT). We show that, by introducing a linear perturbation term to the objective function, the maximum cut problem is perturbed to have a dual problem which is a concave maximization problem over a convex feasible domain under certain conditions. Consequently, some global optimality conditions are derived for finding an optimal or approximate solution. A gradient decent algorithm is proposed for this purpose and computational examples are provided to illustrate the proposed approach.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and let $\mathrm{mc}(G)$ denote the size of a largest cut of $G$. The difference $\mathrm{mc}(G)-m/2$ is called the surplus $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ of $G$. A fundamental problem in MaxCut is to determine $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ for $G$ without specific structure, and the degree sequence $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ of $G$ plays a key role in getting lower bounds of $\mathrm{sp}(G)$. A classical example, given by Shearer, is that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=\Omega(\sum_{i=1}^n\sqrt d_i)$ for triangle-free graphs $G$, implying that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=\Omega(m^{3/4})$. It was extended to graphs with sparse neighborhoods by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. In this paper, we establish a novel and stronger result for a more general family of graphs with sparse neighborhoods. Our result can derive many well-known bounds on surplus of $H$-free graphs for different $H$, such as triangles, even cycles, graphs having a vertex whose removal makes them acyclic, or complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ with $s\in \{2,3\}$. It can also deduce many new (tight) bounds on $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ in $H$-free graphs $G$ when $H$ is any graph having a vertex whose removal results in a bipartite graph with relatively small Turán number, especially the even wheel. This contributes to a conjecture raised by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Moreover, we obtain new families of graphs $H$ such that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=\Omega(m^{3/4+\epsilon(H)})$ for some constant $\epsilon(H)>0$ in $H$-free graphs $G$, giving evidences to a conjecture suggested by Alon, Bollobás, Krivelevich and Sudakov.

A Fast Exact Solver with Theoretical Analysis for the Maximum Edge-Weighted Clique Problem

Abstract:The maximum vertex-weighted clique problem (MVWCP) and the maximum edge-weighted clique problem (MEWCP) are two natural extensions of the fundamental maximum clique problem. In this paper, we systematically study MEWCP and make the following major contributions: (1) We show that MEWCP is NP-hard even when the minimum degree of the graph is n-2, in contrast to MVWCP which is polynomial-time solvable when the minimum degree of the graph is at least n-3. This result distinguishes the complexity of the two problems for the first time. (2) To address MEWCP, we develop an efficient branch-and-bound algorithm called MEWCat with both practical and theoretical performance guarantees. In practice, MEWCat utilizes a new upper bound tighter than existing ones, which allows for more efficient pruning of branches. In theory, we prove a running-time bound of O*(1.4423^n) for MEWCat, which breaks the trivial bound of O*(2^n) in the research line of practical exact MEWCP solvers for the first time. (3) Empirically, we evaluate the performance of MEWCat on various benchmark instances. The experiments demonstrate that MEWCat outperforms state-of-the-art exact solvers significantly. For instance, on 16 DIMACS graphs that the state-of-the-art solver BBEWC fails to solve within 7200 seconds, MEWCat solves all of them with an average time of less than 1000 seconds. On real-world graphs, MEWCat achieves an average speedup of over 36x.

Abstract:Based on an explicit equivalent continuous optimization problem, we propose a simple continuous iterative algorithm for Max Cut, which converges to a local optimum in finite steps. The inner subproblem is solved analytically and thus no optimization solver is called. Preliminary results on G-set demonstrate the performance. In particular, the ratio between the best cut values achieved by the simple algorithm without any local breakout techniques and the best known ones is of at least 0.986.
Linear-Time MaxCut in Multigraphs Parameterized Above the Poljak-Turzík Bound

Abstract:MaxCut is a classical NP-complete problem and a crucial building block in many combinatorial algorithms. The famous Edwards-Erdős bound states that any connected graph on n vertices with m edges contains a cut of size at least $m/2 + (n-1)/4$. Crowston, Jones and Mnich [Algorithmica, 2015] showed that the MaxCut problem on simple connected graphs admits an FPT algorithm, where the parameter k is the difference between the desired cut size c and the lower bound given by the Edwards-Erdős bound. This was later improved by Etscheid and Mnich [Algorithmica, 2017] to run in parameterized linear time, i.e., $f(k)\cdot O(m)$. We improve upon this result in two ways: Firstly, we extend the algorithm to work also for multigraphs (alternatively, graphs with positive integer weights). Secondly, we change the parameter; instead of the difference to the Edwards-Erdős bound, we use the difference to the Poljak-Turzík bound. The Poljak-Turzík bound states that any weighted graph G has a cut of size at least $w(G)/2 + w_{MSF}(G)/4$, where w(G) denotes the total weight of G, and $w_{MSF}(G)$ denotes the weight of its minimum spanning forest. In connected simple graphs the two bounds are equivalent, but for multigraphs the Poljak-Turzík bound can be larger and thus yield a smaller parameter k. Our algorithm also runs in parameterized linear time, i.e., $f(k)\cdot O(m+n)$.

A New Global Algorithm for Max-Cut Problem with Chordal Sparsity

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a semidefinite relaxation-based branch-and-bound algorithm that exploits the chordal sparsity patterns of the max-cut problem. We first study how the chordal sparsity pattern affects the hardness of a max-cut problem. To do this, we derive a polyhedral relaxation based on the clique decomposition of the chordal sparsity patterns and prove some sufficient conditions for the tightness of this polyhedral relaxation. The theoretical results show that the max-cut problem is easy to solve when the sparsity pattern embedded in the problem has a small treewidth and the number of vertices in the intersection of maximal cliques is small. Based on the theoretical results, we propose a new branching rule called hierarchy branching rule, which utilizes the tree decomposition of the sparsity patterns. We also analyze how the proposed branching rule affects the chordal sparsity patterns embedded in the problem, and explain why it can be effective. The numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm is superior to those known algorithms using classical branching rules and the state-of-the-art solver BiqCrunch on most instances with sparsity patterns arisen in practical applications.
