Although the chemistry of sulphur in polluted atmospheres has been studied extensively, our knowledge of the natural cycle remains rudimentary. Measure-ments “atremote marine locations in the Southern Hemisphere indicate that the atmosphere contains a relatively constant background level of COS and SO. We shall argue here that SO, is derived at least in part from oxidation of COS, with additional sources due to CS, and dimethyl sulphide (DMS).

Abstract:The effect of increased reaction rates of stabilized Criegee intermediates (sCIs) with SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is investigated using data from two different locations, SMEAR II, Hyytiala, Finland, and Hohenpeissenberg, Germany. Results from MALTE, a zero-dimensional model, show that using previous values for the rate coefficients of sCI+SO2, the model underestimates gas phase H2SO4 by up to a factor of two when compared to measurements. Using the rate coefficients recently calculated by Mauldin et al. (2012) increases sulfuric acid by 30-40%. Increasing the rate coefficient for formaldehyde oxide (CH2OO) with SO2 according to the values recommended by Welz et al. (2012) increases the H2SO4 yield by 3-6%. Taken together, these increases lead to the conclusion that, depending on their concentrations, the reaction of stabilized Criegee intermediates with SO2 could contribute as much as 33-46% to atmospheric sulfuric acid gas phase concentrations at ground level. Using the SMEAR II data, results from SOSA, a one-dimensional model, show that the contribution from sCI reactions to sulfuric acid production is most important in the canopy, where the concentrations of organic compounds are the highest, but can have significant effects on sulfuric acid concentrations up to 100 m. The recent findings that the reaction of sCI+SO2 is much faster than previously thought together with these results show that the inclusion of this new oxidation mechanism could be crucial in regional as well as global models.

Abstract:The formation of carbonyl sulfide (COS) by catalytic oxidization of carbon disulfide (CS2) over atmospheric particle catalysts was explored through FT-IR, MS (mass spectrometry), and a fixed-bed stainless steel reactor. Also the crystallizing conditions and specific surfaces (areas) of the catalysts were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET. Some oxides such as CaO, Fe2O3, Al2O3, and SiO2 were investigated under the conditions similar to the atmospheric particles as a comparison. The results showed that atmospheric particles and the oxide catalysts exhibited considerable oxidizing activity for CS2 at ambient temperature to form COS. Elemental sulfur as well as COS was one of the main products; even CO2 could be produced by a secondary reaction on some catalysts. Among the catalysts, CaO showed the strongest catalytic activity for oxidizing CS2. The catalytic activities of Fe2O3 and Al2O3 decreased considerably as compared with CaO, and SiO2 had the weakest catalytic activity. Atmospheric particles' catalytic activity is between Fe2O3's and Al2O3's. The atmospheric particles we collected mainly consist of Ca(Al2Si2O8).4H2O, which is also the main component of cement. COS, the main product, is formed by the catalytic oxidizing reaction of CS2 with adsorbed "molecular" oxygen overthe catalysts' surfaces. The concentration of adsorbed oxygen over catalysts' surfaces may be the key factor contributed to the oxidizing activities. This paper first revealed that CS2 could be catalytically oxidized over atmospheric particles to form COS. It induced that this reaction may be another important source of atmospheric COS from CS2.

Abstract:The oxidation of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) is the primary, continuous source of stratospheric sulfate aerosol particles, which can scatter shortwave radiation and catalyze heterogeneous reactions in the stratosphere. While it has been estimated that the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), emitted from the surface ocean accounts for 8-20% of the global OCS source, there is no existing DMS oxidation mechanism relevant to the marine atmosphere that is consistent with an OCS source of this magnitude. We describe new laboratory measurements and theoretical analyses of DMS oxidation that provide a mechanistic description for OCS production from hydroperoxymethyl thioformate, a ubiquitous, soluble DMS oxidation product. We incorporate this chemical mechanism into a global chemical transport model, showing that OCS production from DMS is a factor of 3 smaller than current estimates, displays a maximum in the tropics consistent with field observations and is sensitive to multiphase cloud chemistry.

Abstract:COS is the most abundant sulfur containing compound in the atmosphere that could cause serious adverse effects on human health and environment. Understanding the oxidation mechanism of COS is with great significance in controlling and utilization reduced sulfur (CS2 and COS). In this study, density function theory (DFT) and multi-reference configuration interaction with Davidson correction (MRCI+Q) methods were adopted to investigate the oxidation mechanism of COS. All energies were refined at CCSD(T)/CBS level and subsequently used to deduce the kinetic parameters. The critical mechanism was validated by experiments results. It was found that the oxidation of COS is initiated through three channels. In COS+COS channel, S2(a1∆g) is first produced and then oxidized to SO(X3Σ). In COS+O2 channel, COS combines O2(X3Σg) to yield SO(X3Σ, a1∆) and CO2(X1Σg). In COS dissociation channel, atomic sulfur S(3P, 1D) will be primarily generated and subsequently oxidized to SO(X3Σ) and O(3P). Oxidation of SO(X3Σ) could either result in O(3P) formation. At higher COS concentration, O(3P) formed through three initiation channels will react with COS to produce S(3P) and SO(X3Σ), both of which will be oxidized finally to SO2(X1A1) to reproduce O(3P). Reaction of COS+O(3P) is the dominating consumption reaction of COS. The major products of COS oxidation are CO(a1∆) and CO2(X1Σg) and SO2(X1A1) The ratio of CO/CO2 in products is mainly affected by the branching fraction of COS+O(3P). Based on the rate coefficient calculated at CCSD(T)/CBS level, a comprehensive kinetic model was developed to predict the COS oxidation process. The modeling results are in agreement with experiment data.

Abstract:Carbonyl sulfide (COS) concentrations were measured in surface seawater samples and the overlying marine boundary layer of the Pacific Ocean by using gas chromatography (GC) and electron capture sulfur detection (ECD‐S). A wide latitudinal range was covered (55°N–70°S) on two cruises 9 months apart. COS saturation ratios (SRs) in seawater were found to be less than 1 (undersaturated) across wide regions of the open ocean, especially in the subtropical gyres and wintertime subpolar waters. SRs were highest in coastal/shelf regions and in spring/summertime temperate waters. Extensive undersaturation is attributed to a low COS photoproduction potential of the water, limited sunlight, and/or a rapid hydrolysis rate constant. Decreasing COS concentrations during diurnal cycles in tropical waters were fitted to first‐order exponentials, with resulting decay times agreeing with calculated hydrolysis lifetimes to within 15%. Air‐sea fluxes of COS from the open ocean were calculated by using two different expressions for the transfer velocity and averaged into six latitude bands and three seasons. On the basis of these data we report a global open ocean sea‐air flux of −0.032 (−0.010 to −0.054) Tg COS/yr, which is much lower than and of different sign from the current global estimate (0.14–0.58 Tg COS/yr). Atmospheric COS mixing ratios averaged 470 pptv on the first cruise and 442 pptv on the second cruise, with much of the difference possibly a result of a seasonal decrease in the northern hemisphere COS mixing ratio of up to 10%.

Spontaneous Oxidation of Thiols and Thioether at the Air-Water Interface of a Sea Spray Microdroplet

Abstract:The transport of dissolved organic sulfur, including thiols and thioethers, from the ocean surface to the atmosphere through sea spray aerosol (SSA) is of great importance for the global sulfur cycle. Thiol/thioether in SSA undergoes rapid oxidation that is historically linked to photochemical processes. Here, we report the discovery of a non-photochemical, spontaneous path of thiol/thioether oxidation in SSA. Among 10 investigated naturally abundant thiol/thioether, seven species displayed rapid oxidation in SSA, with disulfide, sulfoxide, and sulfone comprising the major products. We suggest that such spontaneous oxidation of thiol/thioether was mainly fueled by thiol/thioether enrichment at the air-water interface and generation of highly reactive radicals by the loss of an electron from ions (e.g., glutathionyl radical produced from ionization of deprotonated glutathione) at or near the surface of the water microdroplet. Our work sheds light on a ubiquitous but previously overlooked pathway of thiol/thioether oxidation, which could contribute to an accelerated sulfur cycle as well as related metal transformation (e.g., mercury) at ocean-atmosphere interfaces.
Probing the Dynamics and Bottleneck of the Key Atmospheric SO2 Oxidation Reaction by the Hydroxyl Radical.

Abstract:SO 2 (Sulfur dioxide) is the major precursor to the production of sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), contributing to acid rain and atmospheric aerosols. Sulfuric acid formed from SO 2 generates light-reflecting sulfate aerosol particles in the atmosphere. This property has prompted recent geoengineering proposals to inject sulfuric acid or its precursors into the Earth’s atmosphere to increase the planetary albedo to counteract global warming. SO 2 oxidation in the atmosphere by the hydroxyl radical HO to form HOSO 2 is a key rate-limiting step in the mechanism for forming acid rain. However, the dynamics of the HO + SO 2 → HOSO 2 reaction and its slow rate in the atmosphere are poorly understood to date. Herein, we use photoelectron spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled HOSO 2 – anion to access the neutral HOSO 2 radical near the transition state of the HO + SO 2 reaction. Spectroscopic and dynamic calculations are conducted on the first ab initio-based full-dimensional potential energy surface to interpret the photoelectron spectra of HOSO 2 – and to probe the dynamics of the HO + SO 2 reaction. In addition to the finding of a unique pre-reaction complex (HO⋯SO 2 ) directly connected to the transition state, dynamic calculations reveal that the accessible phase space for the HO + SO 2 → HOSO 2 reaction is extremely narrow, forming a key reaction bottleneck and slowing the reaction rate in the atmosphere, despite the low reaction barrier. This study underlines the importance of understanding the full multidimensional potential energy surface to elucidate the dynamics of complex bimolecular reactions involving polyatomic reactants.

Abstract:Photooxidation of carbonyl sulfide (COS) under UV irradiation and the role of the oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 were investigated byin situ FTIR in a long optical path cell. The major products were identified as SO2and CO2 by means of IR spectra and GC-MS. SO2 was partially oxidized into SO2 2™ on the surface of the oxides and interior wall of the reactor, which was determined by XPS. The photooxidation is pseudo first order with respect to COS, and the apparent rate constant is approximately 9.30 x 10−4·s−1 and AI2O3 promote the photooxidation of COS significantly, but Fe2O3 has no obvious influence on the reaction. The reaction rates in the presence of the oxides or not, rank as: UV + SiO2⊳ UV +AI2O3⊳ UV, UV + Fe2O3. The potentiality of the oxides for promoting the photooxidation of COS implicates that the aerosol particles may contribute to the photooxidation of COS in the atmosphere.
Mechanism of the Heterogeneous Reaction of Carbonyl Sulfide with Typical Components of Atmospheric Aerosol

Abstract:The homogeneous reactions of carbonyl sulfide (COS) with OH and oxygen radicals have been studied thoroughly. However, the heterogeneous chemical processes involving COS and atmospheric particles are still not well understood. The reactivity of COS with atmospheric mineral oxides such as A12O3, CaO, SiO2, Fe2O3 and MnO2 has been explored. The gaseous and solid products of the reaction were identified by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy respectively. The mechanism and kinetics of the heterogeneous reaction are also discussed in detail. The results showed that COS can be catalytically oxidized on the surfaces of different atmospheric mineral oxides with the products of CO2, S and SO42−. The reactivity of the oxides with COS differs widely. A12O3 exhibits excellent reactivity, and Fe2O3 is inferior to it. CaO shows weak reactivity, while SiO2 and MnO2 nearly have no activity for the oxidation of COS. The absorbed oxygen and hydroxyls on the surfaces of the oxides are the main active sites in the conversion of COS. When O2 in the experimental system was much excessive, the catalytic oxidation on the surface of A12O3 is a pseudo first order reaction with respect to COS. The acidity of A12O3 influences the reactivity significantly. The rate constants of the catalytic oxidation of COS on the surface of basic, neutral and acidic A12O3 are respectively 1.51×10−4, 9.81×10−5 and 3.06×10−66 s−1.

Abstract:Heterogeneous interaction between carbon disulphide and atmospheric particles was investigated by means of FTIR, XPS, TG-DTG-DTA and in situ XRD analysis. COS and orthorhombic alpha-S-8 were the main products at ambient temperature. And SO42- was identified on the surface of atmospheric due to the further oxidation of sulfur species. Based on the static-state FTIR study and the analysis of sulphur species on the surface of atmospheric particles by XPS, a model of mechanism on heterogeneous interaction between the surface of atmospheric particles and CS2 was given. The reaction is confirmed to be a pseudo-secondary one when O-2 is overloaded. The apparent rate constant is 6. 98 X 10(-22) cm(3) . mol(-1) . s(-1) at 296 K, and apparent activation energy is 34. 6 kJ/mol. In an industrial zone with CS2 exhaust emission standard of 10 mg/m(3) (GB 3 095), the CS2 wastage of the heterogeneous interaction is 41% of that of the reaction between CS2 and OH., which confirms the significance of the heterogeneous interaction in developing countries.

Abstract:For the study on the source of COS in the atmosphere,the reaction of carbon monosulfide radical with O 2 was studied in the CS 2-O 2 system exposed at 185nm.The apparent rate constants and the apparent quantum yields of CS 2 dissociated into carbon monosulfide radical in the CS 2 and CS 2-O 2 systems were 8.06×10 -4s -1 and 2.72×10 -3s -1,0.62 and 2.05 respectively,and the mechanism for the reaction of CS with O 2 was discussed.The experiment showed that the main products of carbon monosulfide radical reaction with O 2 were COS,SO 2 and SO 3,and the added N 2 had no influence on the reaction of CS with O 2.
Influence of atmospheric in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry on the global simulation of SO2 in CESM2

Abstract:Abstract. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a major atmospheric pollutant and precursor of sulfate aerosols, which influences air quality, cloud microphysics, and climate. Therefore, better understanding the conversion of SO2 to sulfate is essential to simulate and predict sulfur compounds more accurately. This study evaluates the effects of in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry on SO2 oxidation in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). We replaced the default parameterized SO2 aqueous-phase reactions with detailed HOx, Fe, N, and carbonate chemistry in cloud droplets and performed a global simulation for 2014–2015. Compared with the observations, the results incorporating detailed cloud aqueous-phase chemistry greatly reduced SO2 overestimation. This overestimation was reduced by 0.1–10 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) in most of Europe, North America, and Asia and more than 10 ppbv in parts of China. The biases in annual simulated SO2 mixing ratios decreased by 46 %, 41 %, and 22 % in Europe, the USA, and China, respectively. Fe chemistry and HOx chemistry contributed more to SO2 oxidation than N chemistry. Higher concentrations of soluble Fe and higher pH values could further enhance the oxidation capacity. This study emphasizes the importance of detailed in-cloud aqueous-phase chemistry for the oxidation of SO2. These mechanisms can improve SO2 simulation in CESM2 and deepen understanding of SO2 oxidation and sulfate formation.

Abstract:Heterogeneous/multiphase oxidation of SO2 by NO2 on solid or aqueous particles is thought to be a potentially important source of sulfate in the atmosphere, for example, during heavily polluted episodes (haze), but the reaction mechanism and rate are uncertain. In this study, in order to assess the importance of the direct oxidation of SO2 by NO2 we investigated the heterogeneous/multiphase reaction of SO2 with NO2 on individual CaCO3 particles in N2 using Micro-Raman spectroscopy. In the SO2 ∕ NO2 ∕ H2O ∕ N2 gas mixture, the CaCO3 solid particle was first converted to the Ca(NO3)2 droplet by the reaction with NO2 and the deliquescence of Ca(NO3)2, and then NO2 oxidized SO2 in the Ca(NO3)2 droplet forming CaSO4, which appeared as needle-shaped crystals. Sulfate was mainly formed after the complete conversion of CaCO3 to Ca(NO3)2, that is, during the multiphase oxidation of SO2 by NO2. The precipitation of CaSO4 from the droplet solution promoted sulfate formation. The reactive uptake coefficient of SO2 for sulfate formation is on the order of 10−8, and RH enhanced the uptake coefficient. We estimate that the direct multiphase oxidation of SO2 by NO2 is not an important source of sulfate in the ambient atmosphere compared with the SO2 oxidation by OH in the gas phase and is not as important as other aqueous-phase pathways, such as the reactions of SO2 with H2O2, O3, and O2, with or without transition metals.

Abstract:With the radiation of UV light, the photooxidation of CS2 was studied under ambient pressure and vacuum condition. By means of in-situ FTIR, XPS and GC-MS, it is confirmed that the products of the reaction are COS, SO2, CO and CO2. The reaction is apparent first-order. Under ambient pressure and vacuum condition the concentration of the intermediate product COS varies tremendously. Under ambient pressure the concentration of COS increases sharply and then decreases gently. While under vacuum condition COS rose only up to 1/10 that of the ambient pressure, and remained invariable until finally vanished slowly. Under ambient pressure and vacuum condition, the half life time of CS2 was 31.6 s and 39.8 s, and it took 55 min and 22 min to degrade 98% of COS respectively. Oxygen promotes CS2 photooxidation. The main products of the photooxidation of COS, which is an important intermediate of the photooxdiation of CS2, are CO2 and SO2. In addition, SO2 could be further oxidized into SO2(4-). Increasing appropriate amount of oxygen could promote the photooxidation activity of COS. However, the rate constant remains invariable when the oxygen is overloaded.
Aluminium production as a source of atmospheric carbonyl sulfide (COS)

Abstract:Carbonyl sulfide is found as a major sulfur compound in anodic gases of commercial aluminium electrolysis. Recent spectroscopic measurements on industrial aluminium smelters found typical CO/COS ratios between 80 and 200. This results in specific COS emissions of between 1 and 7 kg/t(Al) if all COS is released into the atmosphere. In 1993 aluminium production would have been responsible for between 0.02 and 0.14 Tg of COS emissions. Currently, aluminium production does not seem to influence the total atmospheric COS budget to an extent beyond its natural variability. If recent growth rates of global aluminium production are sustained, however, COS emissions would quadruple until 2030. Together with increasing aircraft emissions into the stratosphere, an increase of the sulfate background aerosol is to be expected that could significantly enhance ozone depletion. The use of inert anodes is recommended to reduce aluminium production emissions of COS and CF4, C2F6, CO2, and CO at the same time.

Abstract:Carbon disulfide (CS2) has recently gained attention as an important precursor for the atmospheric trace gas carbonyl sulfide (OCS), which delivers sulfur to the stratospheric sulfur layer and impacts the radiative budget of the Earth. CS2 is naturally produced in the ocean and emitted to the atmosphere. However, the magnitude of its marine emissions is only poorly constrained due to lacking understanding of its production and consumption processes. Here, we present incubation experiments with and without UV light treatment and provide evidence for a previously not considered UV‐light‐driven degradation process of CS2 in seawater, following first‐order kinetics. In addition to its already known photochemical production process, CS2 production is found in the dark, depending on the amount of dissolved organic sulfur present in seawater. We provide novel production and consumption rates of CS2 in seawater that pave the way toward mechanistically quantifying marine emissions of this important trace gas.
