Abstract:A series of supported Ru based catalysts (support = AC, Al2O3, SiO2, HZSM-5) were prepared with different methods and applied in the hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione (CBDK) to 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO). Detailed catalyst characterizations of XRD, TEM, BET, ICP, XPS and NH3-TPD methods were applied to investigate the support effect and influence of preparation methods. Complete conversion of the substrate was achieved with the selectivity of CBDO up to 99.1% over Ru/AC catalysts. The superiority of Ru/AC catalyst prepared with chemical precipitation method over other counterparts were attributed to the larger specific surface area, smaller metal particle size and better Ru dispersion, which was more favorable for the hydrogenation of CBDK.

Abstract:Ru-based catalysts, supported on activated carbon and carbon nanotubes, were synthesized by a simple and eco-friendly bioreduction method and tested in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. Over 2.0% Ru/AC, succinic anhydride was produced with a maximum yield of 99.2% without further hydrogenation to γ-butyrolactone. Well-defined spherical shapes with uniform small size of Ru nanoparticles and the residual plant biomass were responsible for the excellent catalytic activities and stabilities.

Abstract:Ru/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) catalysts synthesized by an environmentally benign and economical bioreduction approach were applied to the hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane under mild conditions without adding any solvent. The catalysts were characterized by a variety of techniques including BET, TEM, HAADF-STEM -EDX, XRD, XPS, FUR, TG, and DTG. The effect of various preparation parameters, such as Ru loading, preparation temperature and calcination temperature on the catalytic performance were systematically analyzed and the optimum conditions were found to be 2 wt%, 60 degrees C, and 500 degrees C, respectively. In terms of reaction conditions, the combination of reaction temperature at 80 C under the pressure of 4 MPa, and the time length of 0.5 h proved to be optimum, under which the cycohexane yield of 99.97% along with the TOF value of 6983.09 h(-1) were achieved. Such results could match or even outweigh those reported in the literature. Furthermore, efforts were also made to probe the stability of catalysts. In a word, the merits of excellent durability, sound productivity and preferable reusability grant the catalysts a promising future in the industrial application. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Selective Hydrogenation of Benzene to Cyclohexene over Ru–Zn/ZrO2 Catalysts Prepared by a Two-Step Impregnation Method

Abstract:Supported Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalysts are successfully prepared by a two-step impregnation method (Zn deposition-calcination-Ru deposition), and their catalytic performances for selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of benzene are investigated. Physical properties of the catalysts are characterized by N-2 adsorption, atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, transmission electron micrographs, dynamic light scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Effects of the Zn content, concentration of alkaline treatment (NaOH) after hydrogen reduction, and hydrogen reduction temperature on the properties of Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalysts with a fix Ru loading of 10.0 wt% are studied. It is found that the optimal ZnO content is 10.5 wt% in the first-step impregnation (ZnO-ZrO2), and that the alkaline treatment after hydrogen reduction is very important for obtaining the optimal Zn content in the ultimate catalyst. Over the optimal Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalyst with 10.0 wt% Ru and 2.78 wt% Zn, the selectivity to cyclohexene can reach 80% at the benzene conversion of 50% under the reaction condition (1200 r/min, 150 degrees C, 5 MPa H-2). The specific activity of the catalyst is about 4 times higher than those of Ru-Zn catalysts prepared by coprecipitation. The recycle catalytic performance of the optimal Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalyst is also explored. There is no significant decrease of catalytic performance after four recycles, indicating good stability of the catalyst prepared by the two-step impregnation method. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The design of an ideal heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reaction is to impart the catalyst with synergetic surface sites active cooperatively toward different reaction species. Herein a new strategy is presented for the creation of such a catalyst with dual active sites by decorating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoclusters at atomic level. This strategy is exemplified by the design and synthesis of Ru nanoclusters supported on Ni/NiO nanoparticles. This Ru-nanocluster/Ni/NiO-nanoparticle catalyst is shown to exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activity for benzene hydrogenation reaction, which is 55 times higher than Ru-Ni alloy or Ru on Ni catalysts. The nanoclusters-on-nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, Cs-corrected high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping, high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, and X-ray absorption spectra. The atomic-scale nanocluster-nanoparticle structural characteristics constitute the basis for creating the catalytic synergy of the surface sites, where Ru provides hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, Ni acts as a "bridge" for transferring H species to benzene adsorbed and activated at NiO site, which has significant implications to multifunctional nanocatalysts design for wide ranges of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous ruthenium containing carbon (Ru-OMC) catalyst with semi-embedded uniform Ru particle distribution was synthesized by using RuCl3/SBA-15 as a hard template. The sucrose both acts as the carbon precursor and Ru3+ stabilizer. The use of RuCl3/SBA-15 makes more exposed Ru surface available for reactants. The turnover frequency of the Ru-OMC catalyst for hydrogenation of benzene reaches ca. 35,000h−1 at 4MPa, 110°C, which is 12 times improvement compared with that of Ru/OMC catalyst prepared by impregnation. The Ru-OMC catalyst can be recycled more than 9 times without much loss of performance and aggregation of Ru nanoparticles.
Ru-Zn Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Benzene Using Coprecipitation in Low Alkalinity

Abstract:Several unsupported Ru-Zn catalysts were successfully prepared using the coprecipitation method under low alkaline conditions, and their catalytic performance was evaluated for the selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of benzene. The effect of the amount of ZnCl2 added to the coprecipitation solution on the physical and catalytic properties of the Ru-Zn catalysts was studied whilst keeping the amount of the NaOH precipitant constant. The properties of the resulting catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, and temperature-programmed reduction. The effects of the stirring rate and the amount of ZnSO4 additive on the catalytic properties of the Ru-Zn catalysts were investigated using the optimal Zn content. The recyclability of the optimal Ru-Zn catalyst was also explored. The results revealed that the optimal Zn content for the Ru-Zn catalysts was 16.7 wt%, and the selectivity for cyclohexene could reach up to 80% (yield > 45%) when the benzene conversion was 57% in an aqueous solution of ZnSO4 (0.45 mol/L) under the optimal reaction conditions (i.e., hastelloy reactor, 1200 r/min, 150 degrees C and 5 MPa of H-2 pressure). The presence of ZnO crystals in the Ru catalysts was found to be critical to obtaining high selectivity for cyclohexene (>80%). The Ru-Zn catalysts prepared under the low alkaline conditions also showed good stability, which indicates that they could potentially be used for industrial application. Abstract:Ru–Ba/SBA-15 catalysts with different Ba/Ru molar ratios were prepared by the ‘two solvents’ method, which can readily introduce the active components into the channels of SBA-15. Characterizations revealed that the crystallite size of Ru was tuned smoothly from 3.6 to 7.5nm by increasing the Ba/Ru ratio from 0.1 to 1.0. In liquid phase hydrogenation of benzene, the maximum yield of cyclohexene was obtained on the Ru–Ba/SBA-15 catalyst with Ru crystallite size of 5.6nm, which is interpreted as the presence of the highest population of the active sites favorable for the production of cyclohexene on such Ru crystallites.
Novel Reaction-Adsorption Method for Preparation of Ru-Zn-La/ZrO<sub>2</sub> Catalysts with High Catalytic Performance for Selective Hydrogenation of Benzene

Abstract:A novel wet-chemistry reaction-adsorption strategy via the facile acid-base interaction under mild conditions is demonstrated to fabricate the state-of-the-art Ru-Zn-La/ZrO2 catalysts for selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene. The catalyst preparation process is systematically investigated and verified with the combination of various characterization techniques. Preloading of lanthanide salts and alkali treatment after calcination not only favor the introduction of ruthenium and zinc species in the later stages but also help enhance the dispersion of the catalysts. The reaction rate constants (k1 and k2) decrease with the increment of the Zn/Ru molar ratio, and the selectivity at 40% conversion (S40) is positively correlated with the k1/k2 ratio, demonstrating the role of Zn species in retarding the hydrogenation activity of Ru and improvement of the selectivity to cyclohexene. In general, the catalytic behavior is dependent on the particle size of Ru, the La-to-Ru electron transfer effect, the content of Zn species, and the surface hydrophilicity of catalyst. These factors are generated by using different precursors and various predesigned La/Ru molar ratios in the preparation recipe. Moreover, a passivation treatment before the hydrogenation reaction can promote the cyclohexene selectivity of the catalyst Ru-Zn-La/ZrO2 (1.6 La/Ru) to 80.6% at a benzene conversion of 43.7%, which meets the industrial requirement. Notably, the specific activity of the catalyst is as high as 1224 gBZ center dot gRu-1 center dot h-1, over 10 times higher than the industrial criterion. This work provides new insights into the design of Ru-based catalysts for benzene hydrogenation and other hydrogenation reactions as well.

Abstract:Ce-promoted Ru/SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by a "two solvents" impregnation method. In liquid-phase hydrogenation of benzene, the Ce-promoted Ru/SBA-15 catalysts exhibited superior catalytic performance to the un-promoted catalyst. The optimum bulk Ce/Ru molar ratio was determined to be 0.25, at which a cyclohexene yield of 53.8% was obtained. Based on characterizations, the beneficial effect of the Cc promoter on the selectivity to cyclohexene was ascribed to the enhancement of the hydrophilicity of the catalyst and to the electron transfer between the Ce(III) species and metallic Ru. A Novel Ru–B/SiO2 Amorphous Catalyst Used in Benzene-Selective Hydrogenation

Abstract:A supported Ru–B/SiO2 amorphous catalyst was prepared by impregnation and chemical reduction by KBH4 solution. Its amorphous character was determined by XRD and DSC. During the liquid phase benzene-selective hydrogenation to cyclohexene in the presence of ZnSO4, the benzene conversion over the as-prepared Ru–B/SiO2 amorphous catalyst was 3.2%/hg Ru and the selectivity was 49.7%, which were much better than the activity (2.3%/hg Ru) and selectivity (22.2%) over the Ru/SiO2 catalyst obtained by H2 reduction. According to various characterizations, including XPS, XRD, ICP, SEM and hydrogen chemisorption, the better selectivity of Ru–B/SiO2 amorphous catalyst is discussed. The promoting effect of boron on the water adsorption by the catalyst is important, since the existence of a layer of water on the surface of the Ru-based catalyst is favorable for the hydrogenation selectivity toward cyclohexene.
Influence Factors on Activity of Ru–Zn Catalysts in Selective Hydrogenation of Benzene

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of benzene is an atom economic green route to produce cyclohexene. The control of Zn species is the key to the catalytic performance of Ru–Zn catalysts. The influences of ZnO crystals on selective hydrogenation of benzene were explored. A series of Ru–Zn catalysts with different Zn contents and ZnO morphologies were prepared by changing the amount of NaOH in the co-precipitation process. The catalysts were characterized by N 2 physisorption, X-ray powder diffraction(XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer(ICP-OES), scanning electron microscope(SEM), temperature-programmed reduction(H 2 -TPR)and Malvern laser particle size analyzer. It is found that with increasing the amount of NaOH, the Zn content first increased then decreased, and the ZnO crystals changed from relatively thicker pyramidal-shaped crystals to slimmer needle-shaped crystals. The catalyst had the highest Zn content(22.1%) and strongest interaction between ZnO crystals and Ru particles at pH 10.6 of the solution after reduction. As a result, it had the lowest activity. The activity of Ru–Zn catalysts is affected by both the Zn content and the interaction between ZnO crystals and Ru particles. The effect of reduction time was also investigated. Prolonging the reduction time caused no significant growth of ZnO crystals but the aggregation of catalyst particles and growth of Ru nanocrystals, thus resulting in the decrease of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Partial hydrogenation of benzene over Ru-Zn/ZrO2 was investigated with the theoretical and experimental approaches.Atomic state of Zn was introduced into the Ru-based catalyst by loading ZnSO4 into the water phase during the reduction of the precursor.The DFT calculation showed that the presence of Zn atoms on the Ru-based catalyst has an unfavorable effect on the chemisorption of benzene and cyclohexene.Furthermore,the whole Zn atoms-modified catalyst surface is partly passivated for the chemisorption of cyclohexene,which is considered essential to the improvement of the cyclohexene yield on the Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalyst.The experimental results showed that an increase in the Zn content in the Ru-based catalyst results in a monotonically decreased hydrogenation activity and an improved selectivity for cyclohexene.Both the theoretical and experimental investigation confirm the optimal Zn content in the Ru-based catalyst.

Abstract:A series of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-stabilized RuB colloidal catalysts have been successfully prepared with the diameters of RuB in the range of 1.3 similar to 3.9 nm with narrow size distribution. In benzene selective hydrogenation, it was found that the RuB-PVP catalyst with smaller particle size exhibited higher activity and selectivity. Moreover, the RuB-PVP catalysts have much better performance than the RuB catalyst without the stabilization of PVP under the same reaction condition.

Abstract:The unsupported Ru-Zn-B catalysts were prepared by chemical reduction method for selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene.The influence of preparation conditions such as zinc content,dropping sequences and pH value of washing solution etc.on performance of the Ru-Zn-B catalyst was investigated in detail .It was concluded that under the condition that the amount of zinc was about 10%,by reversed dropping sequence adopted and the precipitate washed thoroughly to pH=7.5 with distilled water,the best selectivity of hydrogenation was structure obtained.XRD results indicated that ruthenium-zinc-boride allay formed the amorphous structure obtained.

Catalytic removal of gaseous benzene over Pt/SBA-15 catalyst: the effect of the preparation method

Abstract:Porous SBA-15 silica with high surface area was used as a support for loading active Pt with low content of 0.5 wt% through a deposition–reduction or impregnation method and further applied for deep oxidation of benzene. These materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The porous SBA-15 support with high surface area provides a sufficient room for dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. The synthesis routes have a great influence on the chemical–physical properties and catalytic performances of the Pt/SBA-15 catalysts. The catalysts reduced by NaBH4 and H2 exhibited higher activities than that on air-treated and sodium citrate-reduced samples because of their smaller crystallite size, higher dispersion and negatively charged metallic introduced with a strong metal-support interaction. Complete benzene conversion to CO2 has been achieved at about 145 °C over the best NaBH4-derived Pt/SBA-15 catalyst which was 82 °C lower than that on the catalyst prepared by sodium citrate reduction approach.

Abstract:Nano Ru-based catalysts, including monometallic Ru and Ru-Zn nanoparticles, were synthesized via a precipitation method. The prepared catalysts were evaluated on partial hydrogenation of benzene towards cyclohexene generation, during which the effect of reaction modifiers, i.e., ZnSO4, MnSO4, and FeSO4, was investigated. The fresh and the spent catalysts were thoroughly characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, XRF, and DFT studies. It was found that Zn2+ or Fe2+ could be adsorbed on the surface of a monometallic Ru catalyst, where a stabilized complex could be formed between the cations and the cyclohexene. This led to an enhancement of catalytic selectivity towards cyclohexene. Furthermore, electron transfer was observed from Zn2+ or Fe2+ to Ru, hindering the catalytic activity towards benzene hydrogenation. In comparison, very few Mn2+ cations were adsorbed on the Ru surface, for which no cyclohexene could be detected. On the other hand, for Ru-Zn catalyst, Zn existed as rodlike ZnO. The added ZnSO4 and FeSO4 could react with ZnO to generate (Zn(OH)2)5(ZnSO4)(H2O) and basic Fe sulfate, respectively. This further benefited the adsorption of Zn2+ or Fe2+, leading to the decrease of catalytic activity towards benzene conversion and the increase of selectivity towards cyclohexene synthesis. When 0.57 mol·L−1 of ZnSO4 was applied, the highest cyclohexene yield of 62.6% was achieved. When MnSO4 was used as a reaction modifier, H2SO4 could be generated in the slurry via its hydrolysis, which reacted with ZnO to form ZnSO4. The selectivity towards cyclohexene formation was then improved by the adsorbed Zn2+.

Partial Hydrogenation of Benzene over the Metallic Zn Modified Ru-based Catalyst

Abstract:From the adsorption point of view, partial hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene over the metallic Zn modified Ru-based catalyst was experimentally and theoretically investigated. A decreased hydrogenation activity but increased selectivity to cyclohexene over the prepared Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalyst was observed in the partial hydrogenation of benzene. Theoretical calculations suggest that the above phenomena are mainly resulted from the depression of the chemisorption of benzene and cyclohexene on the modified catalyst, especially for the latter. Undesired deep hydrogenation from cyclohexene to cyclohexane in the middle and late reaction stage therefore is effectively retarded, by which an improved cyclohexene yield is guaranteed. An optimal Zn content of 2.72wt.% in the Ru-based catalyst was proposed by both the experiment and calculation for the partial hydrogenation of benzene, and a cyclohexene yield up to 44% was obtained over Ru-Zn/ZrO2 catalyst.
