Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:The object and technical process of ecological restoration of lakeshore were discussed based on the analysis of the structure,characteristics and function of lakeshore.The lakeshore at Xiaoguanyi of Erhai Lake is seriously damaged by human activity and suffered from rural non-point pollution.Based on the characteristics of the lakeshore,a feasible measure combining ecological restoration with control of rural non-point pollution was brought forward.After this measure was put into effect,the macrophytes were restored,the water quality was improved,and the system of phytoplankton and zooplankton was optimized.

Abstract:The principle and design method of ecological restoration in lake aquatic-terrestrial ecotone were inquired with the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone of Erhai Lake as study object. Based on the analysis of current ecological status the type of the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone was classified, the restoration object and the design method of the aquatic-terrestrial ecotone were suggested; and the ecological restoration of whole succession series and half succession series was designed in aspect of the physical fundus, ecological restoration and the structure of landscape. The suitable restoration modes were inquired, based on the eco-environmental functions and the human utility of the ecotone of Erhai Lake, which could provide reference for practice of the eco-restoration of aquatic-terrestrial ecotone of the same type.

Abstract:As an important ecotone between water and land,with a high velocity of materials,nutrients and energy flow turnover rates,the water fronts have high ecological,economic and aesthetic values.In recent years,due to the deficiency of scientific ecological planning,most of the waterfronts were built with erect artificial revetment.For the strengthening adverse natural and anthropogenic disturbances,the waterfronts has confronted by the habitat destroying,species population decreasing and other associated environment quality degrading.With the analysis of ecological landscape function and the reasons and mechanism about the degradation of the riparian buffers,this paper summarized the related technologies research on degraded waterfront landscape with plant community ecological restoration at home and abroad.Contents of habitat restoration,biological corridors restoration,landscape pattern beautify and the waterfront ecosystem structure and function optimization were deeply discussed.The perspective research directions on waterfront ecological restoration technology were also provided.Based on the multi fields' rules of ecology,landscape architecture,hydraulics,soil mechanics,biology economics and other subjects,methods of waterfronts plant disposition were quantitatively analyzed.Finally,further analysis on the mechanism of waterfront ecosystem degradation and refine waterfront deep trough-shoal sequence,quantifying the relationship between the widths of the waterfront vegetation with the biodiversity,and deepening the stabilization of long-term management techniques were pointed out.The aim of this study was to provide a reference guidelines for the ecological restoration technologies for China's degraded waterfront.We believed this study should be helpful to improve the environment quality of the water front effectively.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economy and urbanization,coastal water pollution has become a worldwide issue,with adverse effects widely observed in coastal marine ecosystems.Restoring the marine ecosystems under contamination hence became a hotspot topic of marine environmental science,which has attracted significant attention from domestic and foreign experts.In this paper,based on recent progress,the principles of marine ecological restoration were briefly summarized.The methods based on marine organisms,including ecosystem producers (plants),consumers (animals) and decomposers (microbes),were found to play active roles in this field.Meanwhile,instances of restoration of marine ecology were introduced.These contents are useful for protection of marine ecosystem and development of relevant restoration policy.
Restore polder and aquaculture enclosure to the lake: Balancing environmental protection and economic growth for sustainable development

Abstract:The restoration of lakes and their buffer zones is crucial for understanding the intricate interplay between human activities and natural ecosystems resulting from the implementation of environmental policies. In this study, we investigated the ecological restoration of shallow lakes and buffer zones in the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin, specifically focusing on the removal of polder and aquaculture enclosure areas within the lakes. By examining data from eight shallow lakes and their corresponding buffer zones, encompassing lake morphology, water quality parameters, and land use/land cover (LULC) data spanning from 2008 to 2022, which shed light on the complex relationships involved. During the process of restoring polder and aquaculture enclosure areas, we observed a general decrease in the extent of polders and aquaculture enclosures within the lakes. Notably, the removal of aquaculture enclosures had a more pronounced effect (reduction rate of 83.37 %) compared to the withdrawal of polders (reduction rate of 48.76 %). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of seven water quality parameters, including COD, CODMn, TN, TP, NH3-N, Chl-a, and F, while pH and DO factors exhibit a distinct increasing trend. The results of redundancy analysis and Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated significant correlations between the area of polders and aquaculture enclosures and the changes in lake water quality. Encouragingly, the withdrawal of polders and the removal of aquaculture enclosures had a positive impact on the lake water quality improvement. In contrast, the LULC in the buffer zones of the lakes experienced a gradual decline owing to land degradation, resulting in a reduction in ecosystem service value (ESV). These results offer valuable support for policymakers in their endeavors to restore lake water quality, mitigate the degradation of buffer zones land, and promote the sustainable development of land and water resources.

Abstract:The study divides the development process of international watershed ecological restoration into two stages: single watershed problem control and compound watershed problem control. The single watershed problem remediation stage can be divided into water resources period and water quality period. The comprehensive target watershed remediation stage can be divided into water ecological period (mainly biodiversity) and multi-functional period (combining social needs with urban and rural development). This study summarizes the development trend of international watershed ecological restoration as: the diversification of watershed ecological restoration objectives—the re-naturalization of watershed ecological restoration measures public participation in watershed ecological restoration. This study summarizes the enlightenment of the experience of international watershed ecological restoration to the ecological restoration of China’s river basins as follows: 1) Watershed-based ecological restoration of land space should be based on water; 2) Remediation of land space remediation needs to determine the priority of the problem; 3) Watershed problems should be rectified by multi-functional systems; 4) Watershed problems should be managed according to the degree of urbanization and natural factors; 5) A sound “monitoring, evaluation, planning” cycle system should be established, and problem-oriented to ensure the implementation of the plan; 6) Watershed governance should focus on multi-agent participation and legislative support; 7) Research should focus on the detailed zoning and species structure of native ecosystems, the natural succession path of native ecosystems, and the study of the elastic threshold of watershed ecosystems; 8) We should learn from the experience of foreign river basin management according to the development of different regions.

Abstract:We investigated the long-term effects (6 years) of sediment improvement and submerged plant restoration of a subtropical shallow urban lake, Hangzhou West Lake China. To reveal the lake ecosystems variations, we analyzed the sediment properties, submerged macrophyte characteristics, sediment microorganisms, and benthic macroinvertebrate communities from 2015 to 2020. The ecological restoration project decreased sediment TP and OM, increased submerged macrophyte biomass and sediment microbial diversity, and improved the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the restored area. The sediment TP decreased from 2.94 mg/g in 2015 to 1.33 mg/g in 2020. The sediment OM of the restored area decreased from 27.44 % in 2015 to 8.08 % in 2020. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed that the restoration improved the sediment conditions, making it suitable for the growth of submerged macrophytes, and then sped up the restoration and reconstruction of the lake ecosystem. These results have significant implications on the ecological management of shallow lakes.

Abstract:Watershed ecology restoration is the key to solving the ecological and environmental problems of watersheds and achieving sustainable development. As one direction of the frontiers of ecology, landsenses ecology is supported by science and technology and cares for humans. It has a great significance for enhancing the human habitat and achieving sustainable development. Combining landsenses ecology and the technical process of watershed ecology restoration allows the integration of people’s visions into the system of strategies and applied technologies for watershed ecology restoration while ensuring the restoration of the ecological functions of watersheds. It is a complement to the traditional ecosystem restoration model. This study establishes the connection between landsenses ecology and watershed ecology restoration in terms of goals, models and focus of attention. It aims to construct an indicator system of restoration with the application of landsenses ecology, form a complete process of ecological restoration with the integration of landsenses ecology and apply it to the ecological restoration of watershed elements with relatively intensive human activity such as urban green areas, buildings and wetlands (rivers and lakes). Rather than just always emphasizing natural ecology, landsenses ecology treats human beings as part of nature. It tries to establish a more comprehensive, humanized ideal restoration model by taking “human perceptions” into consideration. Through a restoration process based on long-term and continuous coordination, feedback and improvement, it can improve the ecological benefits of the watershed and improve residents’ well-being, so as to ultimately realize the establishment of a “community of life between man and nature”.

Abstract:The recovery of wetland function and biodiversity conservation aroused considerable interest in the past decades. Although many advances have been achieved in revealing disturbing factors on plants diversity, the knowledge of biodiversity manipulation, landscape configuration and ecosystem process in restored wetlands remains incomplete. To address this issue, the landscape of 20 restored wetlands' vegetation was classified into five vegetation formations including: upland plants, wet grassland, emergent plants, floating plants and submerged plants. Meanwhile, the configuration of landscape, plants' function traits and the structure of plants communities of each wetland were analyzed. A total of 142 herbaceous plants were identified from 399 samples of 20 lakeside wetlands. The top five predominant species were Typha orientalis, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Phragmites australis, Echinochloa caudata, and Erigeron canadensis. The highest of diversity index was observed in upland plants with Shannon-Wiener index (H) of 0.92 while higher richness of plants was obtained in wet grassland with species of 88. In dry year, the immigration of upland xerophyte and obligated aquatic species to facultative area increased the biodiversity of the ecotone. Meanwhile, this change may also aggravate the diffusion risk of exotic invasive species Erigeron canadensis . Additionally, the results indicated that number and evenness of landscape outweighed Shannon diversity index (SHDI) of wetlands in shaping the richness and diversity of wetland plants. Whereas, the high value of maximum proportion of landscape (P max ) have reduced the landscape evenness and species richness. A suggested P max of <0.5 was benefit for the stability and biodiversity of restored wetlands.

Through the analysis on the ecological and economic functions of reestablishment of riparian beach land,the experimental results showed that the influence of reestablishment on river flow,soil physical and chemical properties,soil fertility,soil texture and silt ation in different reestablishment measures and the stability of riparian zone is very significant

Abstract:Abstract The eco-coastal restoration has been a hot issue in recent years, however a complete theoretical and methodological system has not been formed yet. Taking the ecological restoration project of Lingni old Seawall in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province as an instance, this paper illustrates the status quo of the project, and elaborates on the three steps of site arrangement, environmental restoration and cultural renewal, which embodies the idea of ecological restoration for this type of coastal space. On this basis, three principles of reality-based, nature-rooted and culture-oriented are put forward. It is hoped that in future related projects and coastal space restoration, the nature will be respected in combination with culture, and municipal infrastructure construction, landscape infrastructure construction and ecological infrastructure construction will be closely coordinated, so as to establish a coastal landscape system with multi-sense ecology in line with the principle of utilizing the sea ecologically.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Facing the need for transdisciplinary research to promote ecological restoration that achieves both social and ecological benefits, research on past restoration efforts that have directly or indirectly contributed to regional or national sustainable development warrants reassessment. Using China as an example, in this review, we address three basic research questions that can be summarized as follows: ecological restoration—of what, for whom and to what purpose? Accordingly, a ‘landscape pattern—ecosystem service—sustainable development’ co-evolutionary framework is proposed here to describe landscape-scale ecological restoration and its impact on landscape patterns and ecological processes, ecosystem services for human well-being, sustainable livelihoods and socioeconomic development. From the strategic pattern of national ecological security to the pattern of major projects to protect and restore major national ecosystems, the spatial pattern of China's ecological restoration is more geographically integrative. From major function-oriented zoning to systematic ecological protection and restoration, and for the purpose of achieving the Beautiful China Initiative, there are three stages of ecosystem services management: classification, synergy and integration, respectively. The difference in geographic processes should be considered in the key requirements of ecological restoration for China's five national strategies for regional sustainable-development strategies. Deepening understanding of the relationship between humans and nature in different geographical contexts is a scientific prerequisite to support policymaking related to ecological restoration. To promote greater harmony between humans and nature, we propose four important research directions: (i) understanding coupling processes among key components, (ii) identifying ecosystem service flows, (iii) evaluating social-ecological benefits and (iv) supporting adaptive management for regional sustainable development.

Abstract:The stream ecology of the East River is investigated by using the benthic macro-invertebrates as indicator.Samples were taken from 12 selected sites with different environmental conditions from upper reaches to lower reaches.It is found that the biodiversity and bio-community index of benthic invertebrates maintain a relatively high level respectively in the upper reaches and middle reaches of the river,but they are reduced to nearly zero in the lower reaches.The analysis on samples obtained from the Zengjiang Bay and Xizhijiang Oxbow Lake indicates that the major ecological stress is loss of habitats due to reclamation and separation of riparian water from the river.The restoration strategies are suggested accordingly.The strategies include: 1.creating multiple habitats with high habitat diversity,such as riparian lakes,wetlands,backwater and sluggish flow zones and reconnect separated lakes with the river;2.adjusting the operation scheme of the upstream reservoir to mitigate the impact induced by instantaneous fluctuation of flow discharge;3.stabilizing river banks,controlling river erosion and protecting the riverside vegetation.

Abstract:Rapid socio-economic development would inevitably result in the damage of the river ecosystem at present and how to restore damaged river ecosystems to health status has become one of the important environmental issues urgent to be solved.Function zoning is the prerequisite for adaptive restoration,which could provide the scientific basis for the ecological restoration goal.In this work,function zoning of river was firstly compared with the main ecological regionalization,for both advantages and shortcomings.Based on the theories of ecological function regionalization,the conception of river restoration and eco-regionalization was discussed and the approach of eco-regionalization was studied theoretically.The Yongding River（Beijing segment） was selected as a study case and ecological function zoning including six river reaches was developed.The regulation index for ecological restoration of each reach was also proposed,which focused on ecological restoration of Yongding river in Beijing.

Abstract:Abstract Background China has made great progress in ecological restoration. However, there have been no analyses on ecological restoration for specific terrestrial ecosystems. This study identified the important knowledge gaps and advances related to terrestrial ecological restoration in China. Results 7973 papers published between 1978 and 2020 were investigated and about 962 articles were used in this analysis after manually screening. Since the first large national ecological restoration project in 1978, the most frequently studied ecosystem has shifted from farmland ecosystems in 1978–2000 to forest ecosystems after 2000. Forests were the most common ecosystem type investigated, while less attention was paid to wetlands and riparian systems. Meanwhile, the most common ecological issue shifted from environmental pollution in 1978–2000 to the declining resource-carrying capacity of ecosystems after 2000. Studies of ecoregions on the Loess Plateau catchment accounted for more than 40% of papers reviewed in this study, with predominant emphasis on soil and water conservation functionality. Besides, revegetation and afforestation characterized most ecological restoration projects in China, but the natural restoration was relatively less adopted. Additionally, the important tool of reference ecosystem was only used in four studies. Conclusions Ecological restoration has made significant progress in China. We investigated how the ecological restoration can be implemented more effectively. More projects should be implemented for restorative work in wetlands and riparian systems in future. The tradeoff between restorative activities, water resources, and carbon sink needs further research efforts. More emphasis on biodiversity conservation is warranted. Newly developed theory (e.g., stepwise ecological restoration) and the recently issued Chinese National Guidelines for Ecological Restoration Projects should be more effectively implemented in future restorative works. This study provides essential information for future restorative work in China. It also provides insights into the development of policy relevant to restoration and adaptive management during the U.N. restoration decade.
