Abstract:While preparing a revision of Parasenecio W.W. Sm. & J. Small (Compositae) from China, we found that “Parasenecio morrisonensis Y.L. Chen” was not a validly published name because it was wrongly regarded as a replacement name (nomen novum), and thus no Latin diagnosis was given and no type was indicated, whereas it was actually the name of a new taxon that had been previously misidentified as Cacalia monantha auct. non (Diels) Hayata (cf Art. 33 Note 2 of the ICBN). Parasenecio morrisonensis is validly published here by giving a Latin diagnosis and designating a holotype.

Abstract:Summary Zingiber (Zingiberaceae: Zingibereae) is an economically important but taxonomically difficult genus, with names frequently misapplied. Here, we thoroughly review all names corresponding to the currently recognised 54 species from China including their synonyms, and clarify the status of their types. Lectotypes are designated for 40 names (including one second‐step), neotypes for 3 names, and epitypes for 3 names. Additional and often uncited isotypes have been discovered for numerous names, and such additional records are here provided. Tupistra bambusifolia var. rubromaculosa, Z. simaoense, Z. confine and Z. larsenii are newly treated as synonyms of Z. atrorubens, Z. densissimum, Z. officinale and Z. recurvatum respectively. A new combination, Z. bambusifolium, is proposed, based on Tupistra bambusifolia. This study will form the nomenclatural basis of an ongoing taxonomic revision of the genus in China, and phylogenetic study of the genus.

Abstract:Styrax zhejiangensis has been treated as a synonym of S. macrocarpus. Examination of herbarium specimens and observation of wild living plants demonstrates that S. zhejiangensis is a distinct species and is clearly distinguishable from S. macrocarpus through its flowering phenology in which leaves and flowers open simultaneously, its smaller corolla lobes and filaments, and its white-stellate-pubescent seeds. On this basis, we reinstate S. zhejiangensis as an accepted species. Photographic images and a distribution map of the two species are provided. A lectotype of S. zhejiangensis is also designated.

Abstract:In this paper, Carex chungii and other five names at species rank, plus one variety and one form, all from of C. sect. Mitratae, were revised. They constitute a group of morphologically very similar taxa, difficult to tell apart. Our study was based on literature survey, fieldwork, herbarium specimens, statistical analysis of morphological characters and SEM observations of achenes and perigynia. Analysis of morphological data of 94 individuals from eleven populations using principal component analysis (PCA) revealed five clusters, which we consequently considered to correspond to five species. The achenes of Carex genkaiensis were strikingly different from all the other species regarding achene apex contracted into a 0.2-0.5 mm long neck-like appendage (vs. into a discoid-annulate style-base), as well as its perigynium indumentum (pubescent vs. sparsely pubescent). Carex anhuiensis, C. xuanchengensis and C. truncatirostris f. erostris are all synonymized to C. truncatirostris. The previously recognized Carex kamagariensis from Japan is synonymized to C. chungii. Carex chungii var. rigida is recognized as specific rank and the new name C. nanpingensis is proposed. Our study is the first effort to address the taxonomy of this complicate group as a whole in its entire range.

Abstract:Persicaria changhuaensis sp. nov., belonging to P. sect. Echinocaulon (Polygonaceae), from Zhejiang, eastern China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to P. senticosa (Meisn.) H. Gross ex Nakai and P. sagittata (L.) H. Gross ex Nakai var. sieboldii (Meisn.) Nakai, but differs from the former in having an ocrea without a reniform‐orbicular wing at apex, pubescent peduncle, triangular bracteoles, white perianth, and stamens exserted from the perianth. Compared to P. sagittata var. sieboldii, it differs in having the leaf blade triangular‐hastate, sparsely retrorsely‐prickled on abaxial veins, sparsely ciliate at the margin, pubescent peduncle, triangular bracteoles, and stamens exserted from the perianth.
Revision of some problematic taxa of Rhododendron sect. Tsutsusi (Ericaceae) from China

Abstract:Morphological variation within and among populations of some closely related taxa of Rhododendron sect. Tsutsusi from China are revised based on literature, specimen examination and field work. Rhododendron chunii, R. guizhongense, R. viscidum, R. subenerve, R. minutiflorum, R. viscigemmatum, and R. polyraphidodeum var. montanum are reduced to synonymys of R. fuchsiifolium. Rhododendron myrsinifolium is recognized as a distinct species, differing from R. fiuchsiifolium in having smaller leaves, branchlets covered with compressed strigose hairs, and a corolla tube without glands on outer surface. The geographic distributions of R. fuchsiifolium and R. myrsinifolium are also provided.

Abstract:The identities and nomenclature histories of two endemic gingers from China, viz. Alpinia brevis and A. bambusifolia, are reviewed. Alpinia brevis was previously thought to be a widespread species, distributed in Hainan, Guangxi and Yunnan, while A. bambusifolia was known to be endemic to Guangxi. Nevertheless, the results in this study suggest that the collections from Guangxi and Yunnan were misidentified as A. brevis, those of which from Guangxi should belong to A. jianganfeng or Globba aff. racemosa, while those from Yunnan should belong to A. bambusifolia. The treatment that A. nanchuanensis is a synonym of A. bambusifolia is supported by our studies. After this revision, A. brevis is restricted to Hainan, while A. bambusifolia occurs in Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan, China. Lectotype is designated for A. nanchuanensis here.

Abstract:Working within the framework of the Flora of the Pan-Himalayas project, we examined many reports regarding Salix and found that the valid publication date for Salix wangiana is later than that for S. rhododendroides. Consequently, S. wangiana is treated as a synonym of S. rhododendroides instead of the reverse. Salix wangiana var. tibetica is invalid, and therefore the intended combination S. zangica var. tibetica indeed represents a new variety, for which the authorship is “C. Wang & C.F. Fang ex N. Chao”. Furthermore, the names S. rhododendroides and S. zangica var. tibetica are lectotypified.

Abstract:The nomenclatural problems of Salix suchowensis have been addressed by different authors with varying opinions. However, these efforts were flawed by a lack of observation of relevant specimens. Accordingly, we carefully checked relevant publications and specimens both through internet databases and herbarium visits. Here, we thoroughly review the nomenclatural history of Salix suchowensis in light of the new definition of a gathering in the Shenzhen Code. We conclude that this name was validly published in the original publication in 1963. Furthermore, a lectotype is designated for the precise application of the name. We hope this article will offer guidance for interpreting similar cases.
Notes on Carex (cyperaceae) from China (V): New Species, Combination and Subspecies from Zhejiang

Abstract:Recent fieldwork in the Chinese province of Zhejiang revealed new insights into the taxonomy of the genus Carex in this area. Carex honglinii, a new species of Carex sect. Confertiflorae, is described. It differs from C. pseudodispalata in having perigynia broadly obovoid, contracted into a ca. 0.5‒0.7 mm long beak at the apex, and staminate scales acuminate. Carex nemostachys var. subglabra (sect. Confertiflorae) is raised to specific rank and combined as C. subglabra. Eventually, a new subspecies of Carex scopulus (subsp. aristata; sect. Mitratae) is described. This new subspecies differs from the type subspecies in having pistillate scales with a 1‒4 mm long apical scabrous awn, and leaves 1.5‒2.5 wide.

Abstract:Cerastium qingliangfengicum H.W. Zhang & X.F. Jin sp. nova (Caryophyllaceae) is described. The new species was found in moist places in the valleys of Mt. Qingliangfeng in western Zhejiang of China. It is morphologically similar to C. wilsonii, hut differs by having sparsely to densely pubescent stems, leaves densely pubescent on both surfaces, petal lobes obtuse at apex, and capsules more than twice as long as sepals.

Abstract:A reclassification of Cyanidium chilense under the new genus Cavernulicola was recently proposed together with a new family (Cavernulicolaceae) and a new order (Cavernulicolales). Unfortunately, due to an error in the required citation of the basionym, the name "Cavernulicola chilensis" was invalid and cannot be accepted as the generitype of Cavernulicola. This means that Cavernulicola, Cavernulicolaceae, and Cavernulicolales are likewise invalid names under the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN, Shenzhen Code). In this contribution, each of these names is validated.

Abstract:Celtis neglecta Zi L. Chen & X. F. Jin, a new species from Zhejiang, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to Celtis julianae C. K. Schneid. and C. vandervoetiana C. K. Schneid. It differs from Celtis julianae in having young shoots, petioles, and both mid-ribs and lateral veins of the lower leaf surfaces densely whitish pubescent, and fruit pedicels glabrous or sparsely whitish pubescent. It differs from Celtis vandervoetiana in having young shoots and petioles densely whitish pubescent, and being sparsely whitish pubescent on the upper leaf surfaces, and densely whitish pubescent on both mid-ribs and lateral veins of the lower leaf surfaces. Sequences of the plastid intergenic spacer regions atpB-rbcL and trnL-trnF demonstrate that Celtis julianae and C. vandervoetiana are the closest extant relatives of this new species.
Synotis Baoshanensis (asteraceae), a New Species from Yunnan, China

Abstract:Background Synotis (Asteraceae; Senecioneae) is a genus of about 55 species mostly distributed in the Sino-Himalayan region. During a botanical expedition in southwestern China in 2012, we found an unusual population of Synotis in southwestern Yunnan Province. To determine the taxonomic identity of the population, we carried out gross-morphological, floral micromorphological, and cytological observations. Results Our gross-morphological observations have shown that the population is most similar to Synotis auriculata C. Jeffrey & Y. L. Chen in leaf shape and in the number of phyllaries and florets, but readily distinguishable by the glabrous stem and petiole (vs. glandular pubescent), the exauriculate petiole (vs. auriculate), the uppermost leaves obviously smaller than the middle ones (vs. almost equally sized), and the larger ray florets (4–4.5 mm vs. ca. 2.5 mm). The floral micromorphological observations on the population agree with previous reports for other species of Synotis . The chromosomes of the population are counted to be 2 n = 40. Its karyotype is formulated as 2 n = 20m + 14sm + 6st. Conclusions The population was determined to represent a new species, i.e. Synotis baoshanensis M. Tang & Q. E. Yang, which is described herein. The species belongs to Synotis ser. Microglossae .

Abstract:Clematis jinzhaiensis Xue & Wang (1986: 406) was described on the basis of a single collection from Jinzhai of Anhui Province in China. According to the protologue, the type specimen was collected by Z. W. Xue (No. 21) on 20 September 1982, which was deposited at the herbarium of the Institute of Biology (AIB) in Hefei, Anhui. After C. jinzhaiensis was published, however, researchers have failed to access this specimen at AIB. During the taxonomic revision of Clematis Linnaeus (1753: 543) sect. Campanella Tamura (1987: 38), we made it clear that the type was kept and finally lost by the authors (Xie 2005; Fig. 1b), so the type material was never deposited at AIB.

Abstract:Cynanchumthesioides, a species widely distributed in north-eastern Asia, is revised to include two new synonyms: Vincetoxicumsibiricumf.linearifolium, described from Shandong, China in 1877, but long neglected and Cynanchumgobicum, previously believed to be endemic to Mongolia. Typification for C.thesioides and all its synonyms is given, including lectotypification of V.sibiricumvar.australe and V.sibiricumf.linearifolium. An updated description, three figures showing the diverse habitats, habits and variation in morphological characters, and a general distribution map are also provided.

Abstract:In preparing the treatment of the Elaeocarpaceae for the Flora of China, lectotypification is indicated for Elaeocarpus decipiens Hemsley ex Forbes & Hemsley and further nomenclatural change is required regarding a related taxon from Taiwan. The name Elaeocarpus lanyuensis C. E. Chang is invalid because the type was not indicated in the protologue, and the combination E. sylvestris var. lanyuensis (C. E. Chang) C. E. Chang is therefore illegitimate. Elaeocarpus decipiens Hemsley ex Forbes & Hemsley var. changii Y. Tang is published as a new variety, replacing these earlier names.

Abstract:Because they are related to and resembling Sect. Pterococcus and Sect. Calligonum in Junggar Basin sympatric species. There is considerable controversy concerning the attribution about species classification? According to the literature studies and the specimens’ analysis, carry out fieldwork, this paper reviewed the fruit morphology, distribution pattern and the present conditions of different species. The key to sections and species in the genus is achieved. C. cordatum is reported about distribution newly recorded. The distribution maps in Junggar Basin are provided based on GPS of the species. The study provides a valuable method for taxonomy of species of Calligonum L.
