Abstract:Two general features of a superconductor, which appear at the critical temperature, are the formation of an energy gap and the expulsion of magnetic flux (the Meissner effect). In underdoped copper oxides, there is strong evidence that an energy gap (the pseudogap 1 ) opens up at a temperature significantly higher than the critical temperature (by 100–220 K). Certain features of the pseudogap suggest that it is closely related to the gap that appears at the critical temperature (for example, the variation of the gap magnitudes around the Fermi surface and their maximum amplitudes are very similar 2 , 3 ). However, the Meissner effect is absent in the pseudogap state. The nature of the pseudogap state, and its relation (if any) to the superconducting state are central issues in understanding copper oxide superconductivity. Recent evidence suggests that, in the underdoped regime, the Meissner state is destroyed above the critical temperature by strong phase fluctuations 1 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 (as opposed to a vanishing of the superfluid density). Here we report evidence for vortices (or vortex-like excitations) in La 2- x Sr x CuO 4 at temperatures significantly above the critical temperature. A thermal gradient is applied to the sample in a magnetic field. Vortices are detected by the large transverse electric field produced as they diffuse down the gradient (the Nernst effect). We find that the Nernst signal is anomalously enhanced at temperatures as high as 150 K.

Abstract:The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR probe, a confirmation that the (nearly) static bimodality of electronic sites in the Cu-O plane - first reported using scanning tunneling microscopy on surfaces - extends throughout the bulk pseudogap state.

Abstract:The low temperature specific heat of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals (0.063⩽x⩽0.238) has been measured. From the field induced quasiparticle density of states, we derived the superconducting gap slope near the nodes. Based on the picture of superconducting gapping on the Fermi arcs and the formalism of Bardeen–Copper–Schrieffer theory, we obtained the doping dependence of the superconducting condensation energy and found that it is close to that determined by calculating directly from the entropy difference between the superconducting state and the normal state. Our analysis suggests that the coherent superconducting state is formed by forming a new gap on the Fermi arcs (or pockets) below Tc.

Abstract:The Peierls instability in the quasi-2-d La2-x(Ba,Sr)xCuO4 is reexamined by taking the weak interlayer coupling into account. A two-step Peierls transition theory is developed, the general misunderstandings on the Peierls instability are therefore clarified, and a number of experimental anomalies observed in La2CuO4 are well explained. By suggesting an additional change of space group symmetries at the lower transition point, the calculated band structures are also intepreted. The possibility of CDW coexistence with the high-Tc superconductivity, the possible evidence for the 3-d superconductivity of the high-Tc materials are discussed with this theory.

Abstract:Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in La_2-xSr_xCuO_4 in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope v_Δ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature T^* or value Δ_p. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from v_Δ is quite close to T^*. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that T_c ≈β v_Δγ_n(0), where γ_n(0) is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proportional to the size of the residual Fermi arc k_arc. These observations mimic the key predictions of the SU(2) slave boson theory based on the general resonating-valence-bond (RVB) picture.

Crossover to the low-T localized state, inferred from tan theta occurs at a temperature To that is comparable to T-charge (inferred from NQR). Abstract:Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in La2-xSrxCuO4 in zero temperature limit, we determined the nodal slope v(Delta) of the quasiparticle gap. It is found that v(Delta) has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature T-* or value Delta(p). Meanwhile the virtual maximum gap at (pi,0) derived from v(Delta) is found to follow the simple relation Delta(q)=0.46k(B)T(*) upon changing the doping concentration. This strongly suggests a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is further found that the superconducting transition temperature is determined by both the residual density of states of the pseudogap phase and the nodal gap slope in the zero temperature limit, namely, T-c approximate to beta v(Delta)gamma(n)(0), where gamma(n)(0) is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proportional to the size of the residual Fermi arc k(arc). This shows that the superconductivity may be formed by forming a new gap on the Fermi arcs near nodes below T-c. These observations mimic the key predictions of the SU(2) slave boson theory based on the general resonating-valence-bond picture.

Abstract:The magneto resistance, Hall effect and Nernst effect of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta,; single crystals were measured for both normal state and mixed state. The superconducting transition temperature (T-e0) and the pseudogap opening temperature (T*) determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity are 86.5 K and 120 K respectively, while the onset temperature (T-O) of vortex-like excitation detected by Nernst effect is about 105 K, which is consistent with the onset temperature of superconducting fluctuation determined from magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurement. This result indicates that both pseudogap opening and superconducting fluctuation exist above T-c, in the slightly overdoped region of electronic phase diagram of cuprates. In contrast to the underdoped case, the narrower temperature range of superconducting fluctuation in the slightly overdoped region could be understood by the Ginzburg-Landau fluctuation theory. Abstract:Through a combination of x-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and heat-capacity measurements, we report the effect of La doping on Sr in the newly discovered SrFBiS${}_{2}$ system. Superconducting transition with critical temperature T${}_{c}$ of 2.8 K, developed from a semiconducting-like normal state, was found in Sr${}_{0.5}$La${}_{0.5}$FBiS${}_{2}$. A strong diamagnetic signal and a clear specific-heat anomaly associated with this transition were observed, confirming bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field ${H}_{c2}(0)$ was estimated to be 1 T by using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Our experiments therefore demonstrate that bulk superconductivity can be achieved by electron doping in the SrFBiS${}_{2}$ system.
Strictly In-Plane Vortex-like Excitations in Pseudogap Region of Underdoped $La_{2-X}sr_xcuo_4$ Single Crystals

Abstract:Nernst effect has been measured for an underdoped and an optimally doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystal with the magnetic field applied along different directions. For both samples, when $H \|$ c, a significant Nernst voltage appears above $T_c$ and keeps measurable up to a high temperature (100 K) as reported by Xu et al.[ Nature 406, 486(2000) ]. However, when $H \|$ a-b plane the Nernst signal drops below the noise level quickly above $T_c$ for the underdoped sample. Moreover, the in-plane Nernst data with field at different angles shows a nice scaling behavior with the c-axis component of the field. All these give strong indication for strictly in-plane vortex-like excitations in pseudo-gap region.

Abstract:The effect of Lifshitz transition on thermodynamics and superconductivity in hole-doped cuprates has been heavily debated but remains an open question. In particular, an observed peak of electronic specific heat is proposed to originate from fluctuations of a putative quantum critical point p* (e.g., the termination of pseudogap at zero temperature), which is close to but distinguishable from the Lifshitz transition in overdoped La-based cuprates where the Fermi surface transforms from hole-like to electron-like. Here we report an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of three-dimensional Fermi surfaces in La 2- x Sr x CuO 4 thin films ( x = 0.06 to 0.35). With accurate k z dispersion quantification, the said Lifshitz transition is determined to happen within a finite range around x = 0.21. Normal state electronic specific heat, calculated from spectroscopy-derived band parameters, reveals a doping-dependent profile with a maximum at x = 0.21 that agrees with previous thermodynamic microcalorimetry measurements. The account of the specific heat maximum by underlying band structures excludes the need for additionally dominant contribution from the quantum fluctuations at p* . A d -wave superconducting gap smoothly across the Lifshitz transition demonstrates the insensitivity of superconductivity to the dramatic density of states enhancement.

Abstract:The low-temperature specific heat (SH) of overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals (0.178 <= x <= 0.290) has been measured. For the superconducting samples (0.178 <= x <= 0.238), the derived gap values (without any adjusting parameters) approach closely onto the theoretical prediction Delta(0)=2.14k(B)T(c) for the weak-coupling d-wave BCS superconductivity. In addition, the residual term gamma(0) of SH at H=0 increases with x dramatically when beyond x similar to 0.22, and finally evolves into the value of a complete normal metallic state at higher doping levels, indicating a growing amount of unpaired electrons. We argue that this large gamma(0) cannot be simply attributed to the pair breaking induced by the impurity scattering, instead the phase separation is possible.
Emergence of superconductivity from the dynamically heterogeneous insulating state in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

Abstract:A central issue for copper oxides is the nature of the insulating ground state at low carrier densities and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity from that state with doping. Even though this superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is a zero-temperature transition, measurements are not usually carried out at low temperatures. Here we use magnetoresistance to probe both the insulating state at very low temperatures and the presence of superconducting fluctuations in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}(LSCO) films, for doping levels that range from the insulator to the superconductor (x=0.03-0.08). We observe that the charge glass behavior, characteristic of the insulating state, is suppressed with doping, but it coexists with superconducting fluctuations that emerge already on the insulating side of the SIT. The unexpected quenching of the superconducting fluctuations by the competing charge order at low temperatures provides a new perspective on the mechanism for the SIT.

Stable Local Structure in LSMCO System and Its Relationship with Pseudogap

Abstract:Pseudogap is a unique property of high-[Formula: see text] superconductors. However, it was also found that there is a similar pseudogap in giant magnetoresistive La–Sr–Mn–O materials, which are not superconductors. In our previous research, we suggested that the origin of the pseudogap is correlated with the stability of [Formula: see text] plane. We call it a steady “fixed triangle” local structure. If our assumption is correct, it will be expected to find a similar stable local structure in the La–Sr–Mn–O system, which is similar to the [Formula: see text] plane in cuprates. We synthesized Co-doped [Formula: see text] (LSMCO) materials and investigated them. Based on the detailed analysis of the crystalline structure, it is found that there indeed exists a stable local triangles in [Formula: see text] plane. Comparing this similarity with the fixed triangles in the cuprate superconductors, it shows that the origin of the pseudogap may possibly be correlated with the stability of the local structure.
Doping dependence of the upper critical field in La2−xSrxCuO4 from specific heat

Abstract:The low-temperature specific heat of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) single crystals in the magnetic field H up to 12T has been examined over a wide range of doping (0.063 <= p <= 0.238). From this we have mapped the upper critical field H-c2 of LSCO across the entire superconducting diagram. It is found that the H-c2 shows a doping dependence similar to that of the critical temperature T-c. We have discussed the implications of the result and proposed that there may be an effective superconducting energy scale responsible for the H-c2 behavior in the underdoped region. Abstract:We present time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of La2-xBaxCuO4 (LBCO) with 0 <= x <= 0.095 and La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high-temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three-dimensional commensurate long-range antiferromagnetic order, for x <= 0.02, to two-dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity for x >= 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low-energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore, we show that the low-temperature, low-energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with nonsuperconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low-energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.

Abstract:Recently, several experiments on La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) challenged the Fermi liquid picture for overdoped cuprates and stimulated intensive debates. In this work, we study the magnetotransport phenomena in such systems based on the Fermi liquid assumption. The Hall coefficient RH and magnetoresistivity ρxx are investigated near the Van Hove singularity (VHS) xVHS≈0.2 across which the Fermi surface topology changes from hole- to electronlike. Abstract:The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally doped ${\text{Bi}}_{2}{\text{Sr}}_{1.6}{\text{La}}_{0.4}{\text{CuO}}_{6}$ superconductor is investigated by superhigh-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard $d$-wave form. Pseudogap opens above ${T}_{c}$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a ``Fermi arc'' formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the ``Fermi arc,'' the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting state, which changes little with temperature and shows no abrupt change across ${T}_{c}$. These observations indicate that the pseudogap and superconducting gap are closely related and favor the picture that the pseudogap is a precursor to the superconducting gap.
