Abstract:Potassium Aluminum Fluoride obtained as a byproduct in the aluminum grain refiners and master alloys production may be used as an additive to the aluminum reduction process. The component leads to a considerable reduction in the liquidus temperature, and maintains other important parameters such as electrolyte conductivity and solubility of alumina. Both, laboratory tests and semi industrial trials in a 100A cell have been conducted in order to test the suitability of this new additive to the electrolytic process, with positive results. Potassium Aluminum Fluoride can be also used as a basic component of the low-temperature electrolyte for aluminum electrolysis.
Borated graphite cathodes for low-temperature aluminum electrolysis

Abstract:Electrochemical boriding of the graphite plates in the potassium cryolite based electrolytes was studied. The boriding were carried out in a cell with vertical electrodes. The procedure included 2 stages: 1) electrolysis in the KF–AlF3–KBF4 melt (CR=1.3) at low current density (0.01–0.02 A/cm2), required for the boron reduction, at 700 and 750 °C; 2) electrolysis in the KF–AlF3–Al2O3 melt at higher current density (0.2 A/cm2), required for the aluminum reduction. The optimal conditions of electrodeposition for obtaining the borated wettable cathodes were determined. According to the SEM data, a continuous AlB2 layer with a thickness of 7–10 μm was formed on the graphite surface. The borated graphite was tested as a wetted cathode during the low-temperature aluminum electrolysis. Prolonged electrolysis in a vertical cell with the graphite anode and the borated graphite cathode was carried out in the KF–NaF(10 wt.%)–AlF3–Al2O3 electrolyte (CR=1.5) at 830 °C. After 100 h of electrolysis, the thickness of the AlB2 layer on the graphite surface was 5 μm, while the cathode surface was completely wetted with aluminum. Thus, we demonstrated the feasibility of using the borated graphite cathode as a wettable dripping cathode in the low-temperature aluminum electrolysis in the vertical cell.

Abstract:Solid waste produced in the process of aluminum electrolysis is a substantial secondary source of fluorine, the fluoride electrolyte in aluminum electrolysis carbon slag accounts for about 75%. Regenerative cryolite, extracted from anode carbon residue through flotation or calcination, possesses a significant potential for fluorine recovery. The fluoride in regenerated cryolite is mainly insoluble, making its efficient dissociation crucial for utilizing the solid waste from aluminum electrolysis. This study uses regenerative cryolite and sodium carbonate to examine how roasting temperature, time, and the reagent-to-cryolite ratio (R/C) affect cryolite dissociation. Dissociation efficiency is measured using indices like baking loss, leaching loss, fluoride ion concentration in the leachate, and fluoride ion conversion rate. Optimal dissociation is achieved at 780-820°, 2.0-2.5 hours roasting time, and an R/C ratio of 1.0-1.2. Orthogonal experimental results highlight the predominant influence of R/C, with roasting temperature being the secondary factor and roasting time having the least impact. Notably, at 780°, 2.0 hours, and an R/C ratio of 1.2:1, the fluoride ion conversion rate reaches a peak of 94.23%. This allows for recycling and production of high-value fluoride products, benefiting both the environment and the economy.

Abstract:Cryolite(Na3AlF6)was the indispensable cosolvent of the aluminum industry,and had a broader purpose in other industries.The different cryolite synthetic technologies were introduced briefly and the advantages and disadvantages of the various processes were analyzed.The synthetic process used in the field of bastnaesite rare-earth that associated fluorine-type mineral resources was studied.It provided a green way for RE cleaner production and resource utilization of fluoride.Finally,the results of a preliminary study were presented.
Anti‐Freezing Strategies of Electrolyte and their Application in Electrochemical Energy Devices

Abstract:In this review, we summarized the prominent anti‐freezing strategies for electrolyte and classified them into four types. Typical energy devices employing these strategies are then discussed to show the advanced progress in their respective fields. The remaining challenges and future perspectives of the anti‐freezing electrochemical energy devices have also been provided for their follow‐up development. Wider scenes of human's activities under low temperature demand promising performance of anti‐freezing electrochemical energy devices, and the promotion of performance is mainly limited by electrolyte. However, despite many relevant research works reported, there are still few reviews that systematically and comprehensively summarize these modified approaches and applications. In this focus review, we classify the prominent anti‐freezing strategies as high concentration aqueous electrolyte, organic additives, organic electrolyte and others. Relevant research works have been put to clarify their anti‐freezing mechanisms and exhibit the modification effects. Besides, various energy devices including metal‐air batteries, non‐gas batteries and supercapacitors which employed aforementioned strategies are discussed and their key low‐temperature performance indexes are summarized to exhibit the advanced research progress. Finally, we put forward some remaining challenges of these modification strategies toward practical application and propose prospects on future development of low‐temperature electrochemical energy devices.

Abstract:The process of electrolytic production of Al–Y and Al–Sc alloys in an electrolyte based on potassium cryolite KF–NaF(10 wt %)–AlF3 with a cryolite ratio (CR) of 1.5, containing Al2O3, Sc2O3, or Y2O3 oxides, in a cell with vertical electrodes has been studied. The Fe–Ni–Cu alloy served as an inert anode. The wetted cathode was a graphite plate coated with the aluminum diboride. The electrolysis was carried out at a cathode current density of 0.2 A/cm2 and a temperature of 830°C. The Al2O3 mass was calculated based on the value of the current efficiency of 60%. The Sc2O3 additive was introduced into the melt in an amount of 1 wt %. The mass of the Y2O3 additive was chosen based on its solubility in the melt under study. For this, the influence of Y2O3 additives on the liquidus temperature of the quasi-binary mixture [KF–NaF(10 wt %)–AlF3 (KO = 1.5)]–Y2O3 was determined and it was found that, in contrast to Sc2O3 additives, which lower the liquidus temperature of the cryolite melt, small additions of Y2O3 lead to its sharp increase. It has been found that the efficiency of the electrolytic reduction of Y2O3 is 10 times higher than that of the aluminothermic reduction. Other things being equal, the efficiency of the electrolytic reduction of Y2O3 is higher than that of Sc2O3. Alloys Al–Y and Al–Sc with a REM content of 0.6 wt % have been obtained. However, the time to reach the maximum recovery of yttrium significantly exceeds the time to recover scandium. Metallographic studies of the obtained alloys indicated the presence of Al3Sc and Al2Y intermetallic compounds. A conclusion is made about the fundamental possibility of low-temperature electrolytic production of Al-REM alloys in cryolite melts based on potassium cryolite in vertical cells with an inert metal anode and a wettable cathode.

Abstract:The presence of alumina agglomerates seriously affects the current efficiency of the aluminum electrolysis process. Clarify the dynamic dissolution process of agglomerates is essential to improve the current efficiency of aluminum electrolysis. A mathematical model is proposed to describe the different phenomena from the formation until complete dissolution of agglomerates. Considering permeation and solidification processes of cryolite, a semi-analytical mathematical model is developed to formulate the formation, melting and dissolution processes of agglomerates, and the time duration for each stage is deduced. Porosity and heat mass transfer of agglomerates are explored based on the packing theory and mechanism of heat mass transfer in wet porous media. Dimensionless approach is applied to investigate the main factors affecting the dissolution stages and porosity of agglomerates. The results show that the superheat has a great influence on the formation and melting stage, the diameter of agglomerates can reach 14.93 mm for 200 particles agglomerated. The density decreases with the increase of agglomerated particle number, which varies in the range of 2.27–2.28 g/cm 3 . The average dissolution rate of agglomerates is about 1.83×10−5−2.95×10−5 kg/s within the range of alumina concentration in this study.

Abstract:Rechargeable alkali metal ion (Li+, Na+, K+) batteries have shown great success in room-temperature energy storage. However, their low-temperature (subzero temperature) applications are still severely restricted, and the poor electrochemical performance of the anode materials at low temperature serves as a critical obstacle. Therefore, it is urgent to obtain a comprehensive understanding towards the key effects of low temperatures on the performance of the anodes and overview the related improving strategies. In this work, the effects that temperature would impose on electrode performance are firstly discussed. Next, the progress in low-temperature anodes of alkali metal ion batteries is reviewed, by the classification of the reaction types of the anode materials, including intercalation-type anodes, conversion-type anodes, alloy anodes and alkali metal anodes, and corresponding strategies to improve the performance of the anodes are summarized as well. At last, some promising research directions in this field are proposed. This work is intended to shed some light on future exploitation of high-performance low-temperature anode materials.
Study on preparation of aluminum fluoride from cryolite

Abstract:As China's aluminum electrolysis industry expanded its production capacity, it produced a large amount of bath materials– cryolite based molten salt, which is not utilized fast enough and piled up in aluminum factories. It is of great significance to find a proper way to process the accumulated bath materials. Through the method introduced in this paper, aluminum fluoride can be produced from cryolite-based electrolyte and fed back into the aluminum electrolysis cell as a necessary additive. This method includes four steps: Calcination of crystalline aluminum nitrate with cryolite. Cryolite and crystalline aluminum nitrate are mixed and preheated. The main chemical reaction that occurs in this step will produce sodium nitrate (NaNO3), β-aluminum fluoride (β-AlF3), chiolite (Na5Al3F14) and the aluminum hydroxyfluoride hydrate (AHF). After calcination, the products are washed with water to separate soluble NaNO3 from the other products. The insoluble products obtained after washing are calcined with ammonium bifluoride to convert AHF into AlF3. The mixture obtained after preheating is then washed with an aqueous solution of aluminum salt (such as Al(NO3)3) to remove Na5Al3F14. Aluminum fluoride of high purity is obtained in the end. Calcination step is the most important among the four steps. The effects of calcination temperature (85 – 135 ℃) and molar ratio of crystalline aluminum nitrate to cryolite (0.5 – 2) on the conversion rate of cryolite were studied. The experimental results show that the highest conversion rate of cryolite can reach 97.03%. Through SEM, EDS, ICP and other analysis methods, it was found the final products contained more than 98.8 wt% aluminum fluoride and less than 0.4 wt% sodium, and the average particle size of aluminum fluoride is approximately 15 – 20 µm.

Abstract:Abstract Electrolyte design holds the greatest opportunity for the development of batteries that are capable of sub-zero temperature operation. To get the most energy storage out of the battery at low temperatures, improvements in electrolyte chemistry need to be coupled with optimized electrode materials and tailored electrolyte/electrode interphases. Herein, this review critically outlines electrolytes’ limiting factors, including reduced ionic conductivity, large de-solvation energy, sluggish charge transfer, and slow Li-ion transportation across the electrolyte/electrode interphases, which affect the low-temperature performance of Li-metal batteries. Detailed theoretical derivations that explain the explicit influence of temperature on battery performance are presented to deepen understanding. Emerging improvement strategies from the aspects of electrolyte design and electrolyte/electrode interphase engineering are summarized and rigorously compared. Perspectives on future research are proposed to guide the ongoing exploration for better low-temperature Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:Electrolyte called blood of aluminum reduction cell, has great effect on cell performance and technology economic index. In recent years, lithium and potassium in alumina accumulated year by year in electrolyte of electrolysis cell, which directly affected production of aluminum electrolysis industry. Current efficiency is important technology economic index in the process of aluminum electrolysis. When electrolyte containing high concentration of Li and K was used, relationship between current efficiency and operating condition including electrolyte temperature, superheat, cell voltage, molecular ratio, electrolyte composition, thickness of side ledge, aluminum level was systematically studied, which provided theory basis for aluminum electrolysis smelters to obtain good benefit.

Abstract:With the highest energy density ever among all sorts of commercialized rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have stimulated an upsurge utilization in 3C devices, electric vehicles, and stationary energy-storage systems. However, a high performance of commercial LIBs based on ethylene carbonate electrolytes and graphite anodes can only be achieved at above -20 °C, which restricts their applications in harsh environments. Here, a comprehensive research progress and in-depth understanding of the critical factors leading to the poor low-temperature performance of LIBs is provided; the distinctive challenges on the anodes, electrolytes, cathodes, and electrolyte-electrodes interphases are sorted out, with a special focus on Li-ion transport mechanism therein. Finally, promising strategies and solutions for improving low-temperature performance are highlighted to maximize the working-temperature range of the next-generation high-energy Li-ion/metal batteries.

Abstract:With the rapid development of electronic devices, energy storage systems with excellent performance are required. To be used in cold climates and high-altitude areas, it is required that the battery should work stably and operate safely even when the temperature drops below freezing point. Sodium-ion batteries arouse great attention, because of their high safety, good capacity in both high and low-temperature environments, along with their abundant sodium resources in the earth's crust. But for practical applications, the kinetics of sodium-ion batteries become slow when working at low temperatures. The performance deteriorates with the temperature decreases. Therefore, researchers have carried out a lot of research to overcome these problems in the low-temperature environment. For example, the energy storage performance of sodium-ion batteries can be improved by optimizing the positive and negative electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Among them, optimizing the electrolyte is critical to improving the energy storage performance of sodium-ion batteries. Because the electrolyte is an important part, which is in contact with each part of the battery as a medium, which is mainly composed of solvents, electrolyte salts, and additives. During the charge/discharge processes of the battery, the electrolyte plays a role to act as an ionic conductor to transfer Na + between the positive and negative electrodes and link then together. Additionally, the electrolyte will also directly participate in the reaction on the electrode surface and form SEI film. Thus, it is one of the most economical and effective means to enhance the low-temperature performance by modifying the electrolyte. This paper, summarizing the reports on the electrolyte of low-temperature sodium-ion batteries at home and abroad, sorting out and analyzing the solid, liquid, and gel electrolytes, clarifies how to making the electrochemical performance of sodium-ion batteries better by optimizing electrolytes.
A Low-Temperature Process for Lithium Extraction from Lithium-Bearing Mineral: Conversion Behavior and Mechanisms

Abstract:Lithium extraction from lithium-bearing clay mineral (LiBC) has received significant attention due to the increasing demand of lithium for the advanced renewable energy industry. However, the low contents of valuable elements and stable physiochemical properties of LiBC result in high energy consumption and low efficiency in extracting lithium from LiBC. This study demonstrates a low-temperature strategy using (NH4)2SO4 as an additive to effectively extract lithium from LiBC. In details, the thermodynamic analysis verifies that Li, Al, and Fe can be converted to sulfates at 250-450 degrees C during thermal treatment, indicating the possibility for extraction of Li under low-temperature conditions. Subsequently, the leaching behavior of lithium under different roasting temperatures and water leaching conditions was investigated. The results show that 83.43 % of Li can be extracted under optimized conditions. The mechanism study was carried out through a number of characterization techniques including 3D microscope, TG-DSC, XRD, FTIR, and SEM. It reveals that formation of liquidus phase of molten salt is the key to achieve low-temperature roasting and transfer and reactions at the interface of molten salt and LiBC can be significantly enhanced that can easily breakdown the interlayer structures. Consequently, it offers distinct advantages, since the roasting temperature can be significantly decreased with minor impurity ions being leached into the solutions. This research therefore provides an efficient and environmentally friendly method for lithium extraction from minerals.
Challenges and strategies of formulating low‐temperature electrolytes in lithium‐ion batteries

Abstract:Low‐temperature electrolytes applied in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are systematically evaluated in this review, with a special focus on electrolyte formulation, electrolyte structure, electrolyte chemistry, interfacial reactions, and electrochemical behaviors. The challenges and advancements for low‐temperature electrolytes are discussed in detail, aiming to expand the application scenarios of LIBs in cold environments. Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have monopolized energy storage markets in modern society. The reliable operation of LIBs at cold condition (<0°C), nevertheless, is inevitably hampered by the sluggish kinetics and parasite reactions, which falls behind the increasing demands for portable electronics and electric vehicles. The electrolyte controls both Li+ transport and interfacial reaction, dictating the low‐temperature performance substantially. Therefore, the rational formulation of electrolytes is significant for realizing superior low‐temperature performance and broadening application niches of LIBs. Herein, we first discuss the kinetic limitations of low‐temperature LIBs, highlighting the importance of electrolyte structure and interfacial chemistry. Then, the advancements for formulating subzero‐temperature electrolyte are summarized with in‐depth discussions about electrolyte formulation, solvation structure, interfacial chemistry, and low‐temperature behaviors. Moreover, some opportunities for lithium metal batteries and the corresponding low‐temperature electrolyte are covered. Finally, the major challenges and future perspectives are outlined for low‐temperature LIBs.

Abstract:Alongside the pursuit of high energy density and long service life, the urgent demand for low-temperature performance remains a long-standing challenge for a wide range of Li-ion battery applications, such as electric vehicles, portable electronics, large-scale grid systems, and special space/seabed/military purposes. Current Li-ion batteries suffer a major loss of capacity and power and fail to operate normally when the temperature decreases to –20 °C. This deterioration is mainly attributed to poor Li-ion transport in a bulk carbonated ester electrolyte and its derived solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this mini-review discussing the limiting factors in the Li-ion diffusion process, we propose three basic requirements when formulating electrolytes for low-temperature Li-ion batteries: low melting point, poor Li+ affinity, and a favorable SEI. Then, we briefly review emerging progress, including liquefied gas electrolytes, weakly solvating electrolytes, and localized high-concentration electrolytes. The proposed novel electrolytes effectively improve the reaction kinetics via accelerating Li-ion diffusion in the bulk electrolyte and interphase. The final part of the paper addresses future challenges and offers perspectives on electrolyte designs for low-temperature Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Chromium oxide is considered as one of the candidate lining materials for low temperature aluminum electrolysis. The chemical properties of chromium oxide in KF-NaF-AlF3 based low temperature electrolyte melt were studied by means of static oxidation tests and electrolysis experiment with vertical inert anodes. The results showed that trivalent chromium oxide (III) could be oxidized to generate different valence states chromates (II, III, IV, VI) in electrolyte melt. Among them, the hexavalent chromates could be volatilized in large amount with electrolyte volatiles. The strength of the oxidizing atmosphere was the key factor affecting the generation of yellow hexavalent chromates which could be significantly reduced by the existence of protective atmosphere and graphite. Under the condition of electrolysis with inert anodes, there was not only the massive formation and volatilization of hexavalent chromates, but also the pseudo volatilization of chromium oxide (III) caused by hot-oxygen.

Abstract:The core of the design of high‐performance low‐temperature electrolytes is to regulate and balance the four fundamental interactions; cationsolvent, anionsolvent, cationanion, and solventsolvent interactions. This review for the first time analyzes the physicochemical properties of low‐temperature electrolytes and summarizes the relevant research progress according to their interactions. The design of low‐temperature electrolytes is a key technology to improve the low‐temperature performance of electrochemical energy storage devices and expand their application fields. However, the current design strategies for low‐temperature electrolytes remain in the optimization of formula, without systematic and in‐depth consideration of the internal relationship between the fundamental interactions and performances of electrolytes at low temperature. Here, starting from the four fundamental interactions among cations, anions, and solvents in the electrolyte, this review for the first time analyzes the temperature‐dependent mechanisms of their interactions and corresponding physicochemical properties of electrolytes from atomic insights. Then, the research progress in low‐temperature electrolytes is summarized according to the relationships of these interactions. Abstract:Electrolyte freezing under low temperatures is a critical challenge for the development of aqueous batteries (ABs). While lowering the freezing point of the electrolyte has caught major research efforts, limited attention has been paid to the structural evolution during the electrolyte freezing process and regulating the frozen electrolyte structure for low temperature ABs. Here, we reveal the formation process of interconnected liquid regions for ion transport in frozen electrolytes with various in situ variable-temperature technologies. More importantly, the low-temperature performance of ABs was significantly improved with the colloidal electrolyte design using graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs), which effectively inhibits the growth of ice crystals and expands the interconnected liquid regions for facial ion transport. This work provides new insights and a promising strategy for the electrolyte design of low-temperature ABs.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries have been indispensable for various portable devices, electric vehicles, and energy storage stations. The operation of rechargeable batteries at low temperatures has been challenging due to increasing electrolyte viscosity and rising electrode resistance, which lead to sluggish ion transfer and large voltage hysteresis. Advanced electrolyte design and feasible electrode engineering to achieve desirable performance at low temperatures are crucial for the practical application of rechargeable batteries. Herein, the failure mechanism of the batteries at low temperature is discussed in detail from atomic perspectives, and deep insights on the solvent-solvent, solvent-ion, and ion-ion interactions in the electrolytes at low temperatures are provided. The evolution of electrode interfaces is discussed in detail. The electrochemical reactions of the electrodes at low temperatures are elucidated, and the approaches to accelerate the internal ion diffusion kinetics of the electrodes are highlighted. This review aims to deepen the understanding of the working mechanism of low-temperature batteries at the atomic scale to shed light on the future development of low-temperature rechargeable batteries.
