Abstract:In a semi-discretized Euler-Bernoulli beam equation, the non-nearest neighboring interaction and large span of temporal scales for wave propagations pose challenges to the effectiveness and stability for artificial boundary treatments. With the discrete equation regarded as an atomic lattice with a three-atom potential, two accurate artificial boundary conditions are first derived here. Reflection coefficient and numerical tests illustrate the capability of the proposed methods. In particular, the time history treatment gives an exact boundary condition, yet with sensitivity to numerical implementations. The ALEX (almost EXact) boundary condition is numerically more effective.
The Artificial Boundary Conditions for Numerical Simulations of the Complex Amplitude in A Coupled Bay-River System

Abstract:We consider the numerical approximations of the complex amplitude in a coupled bay-river system in this work. One half-circumference is introduced as the artificial boundary in the open sea, and one segment is introduced as the artificial boundary in the river if the river is semi-infinite. On the artificial boundary a sequence of high-order artificial boundary conditions are proposed. Then the original problem is solved in a finite computational domain, which is equivalent to a variational problem. The numerical approximations for the original problem are obtained by solving the variational problem with the finite element method. The numerical examples show that the artificial boundary conditions given in this work are very effective.

Abstract:This paper presents an exact non-reflecting boundary condition for dealing with transient scalar wave propagation problems in a two-dimensional infinite homogeneous layer. In order to model the complicated geometry and material properties in the near field, two vertical artificial boundaries are considered in the infinite layer so as to truncate the infinite domain into a finite domain. This treatment requires the appropriate boundary conditions, which are often referred to as the artificial boundary conditions, to be applied on the truncated boundaries. Since the infinite extension direction is different for these two truncated vertical boundaries, namely one extends toward x --> infinity and another extends toward x --> -infinity, the non-reflecting boundary condition needs to be derived on these two boundaries. Applying the variable separation method to the wave equation results in a reduction in spatial variables by one. The reduced wave equation, which is a time-dependent partial differential equation with only one spatial variable, can be further changed into a linear first-order ordinary differential equation by using both the operator splitting method and the modal radiation function concept simultaneously. As a result, the non-reflecting artificial boundary condition can be obtained by solving the ordinary differential equation whose stability is ensured. Some numerical examples have demonstrated that the non-reflecting boundary condition is of high accuracy in dealing with scalar wave propagation problems in infinite and semi-infinite media. Abstract:We design a class of matching boundary conditions for atomic simulations of the face-centered-cubic lattice. Such a condition takes the form of a linear constraint for atoms near the boundary. A normal matching boundary condition is obtained by matching the dispersion relation in the long wave limit. A two-angle matching boundary condition is constructed through operator multiplication with the help of apparent wave propagation. The edge atoms and the corner atoms are treated in a consistent manner. Reflection coefficient analysis and wave-packet tests verify the effectiveness of the proposed boundary conditions for general incidence, not limited to long waves. The treatment is local in both space and time, yielding negligible additional numerical cost. Vector wave formulation is also presented, and applied to nanoindentation simulations.

Abstract:The stability and accuracy of local artificial boundary are two important criterions for evaluating its applied value in engineering. In this paper, a stress artificial boundary condition was developed by mixing the planar waves and the scattered waves transmitting into the linear elastic infinite media through artificial boundary. For the proposed boundary condition, the responses of boundary nodes and finite element nodes are calculated by the same integral method, and its stability condition is also the same as the finite element integral method. Numerical examples demonstrate that the accuracy of the proposed boundary is higher than that of existing viscous boundaries, viscous-spring boundaries, the first-order transmitting boundary and the second-order transmitting boundary.

Abstract:The wave radiation effect of infinite fluid medium is an important factor affecting the dynamic response of sea area engineering.Artificial boundary is an effective method to realize the numerical analysis of near-field wave motions in such open systems.In this paper,the dynamic artificial boundaries of open domain fluid medium are deduced based on the theory of fluid wave motions in displacement scheme.The dynamic artificial boundary conditions of wave motions in one-dimensional,two-dimensional and three-dimensional fluid media are formed respectively.As a result,the dynamic artificial boundary of plane wave in one-dimensional fluid medium is classical viscous boundary.On the twodimensional artificial boundary of cylindrical wave and three-dimensional artificial boundary of spherical wave,the nodal stress is proportional to the speed and acceleration of the node.Therefore,the boundary conditions of these two dimensions can be equivalent to the artificial boundaries composed of the damping-mass system.Furthermore,thecorresponding numerical simulation techniques of the fluid medium dynamic artificial boundaries proposed in this paper are discussed,and the realization methods on ANSYS platform are given.Examples of the near-field dynamic response problems show that,for the simulation of the transmission and absorption of the axisymmetric and the non-axisymmetric wave motions.in fluid medium,the calculation accuracies of the dynamic artificial boundaries proposed in this paper are relatively high.The reliability and practicality of those artificial boundaries are verified.The artificial boundaries of fluid medium developed in this paper can be combined with large commercial finite element software,which can provide some insight in the dynamic analysis methods of sea area engineering including sea area terrains and islands.

Abstract:A high-order accurate artificial boundary condition(ABC) for the finite element analysis of near-field wave motion problems is proposed.The out-of-plane wave propagation problem on an unbounded exterior domain is considered.First,an exact dynamic-stiffness ABC that is global in space and time is constructed by solving the initial boundary value problem of a far field using the separation of variables.Second,a temporal localization method that consists of the rational function approximation and the auxiliary variable realization is developed and applied to the dynamic-stiffness ABC,leading to a high-order accurate ABC that is local in time but global in space.Third,the resulting high-order accurate ABC is discretized along the artificial boundary and coupled with the standard lumped-mass finite element equation of a near field.A symmetric second-order system of ordinary differential equations in time is obtained.A new explicit time integration algorithm in structural dynamics is used to solve this system.Finally,numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed ABC is accurate,efficient,stable and easy to implement into the existing finite element codes.

Abstract:Using the operator splitting method, the non-reflecting artificial boundary condition, which has the same form as those originally presented by Hagstrom and Hariharan [Appl. Numer. Math. 27 (1998) 403] as well as Thompson et al. [Comput. Meth. Appl. Mech. Engrg. 191 (2001) 311], is re-derived in this paper to deal with transient scalar wave propagation problems in a two-dimensional homogeneous half space. In particular, the original non-reflecting artificial boundary condition is extended to approximately solve transient scalar wave propagation problems in a two-dimensional layered half space, which has a far field consisting of non-homogeneous materials. The proposed non-reflecting artificial boundary condition can be decomposed into three types of elements: physically meaningful springs and dashpots as well as the generalized energy absorbers, which represent the effects of incident waves at previous time instants on the truncated artificial boundary. Due to the meaningfulness in physics, the proposed non-reflecting artificial boundary is straightforwardly applied to the finite element analysis of wave propagation problems in infinite media. The related numerical results from three application examples have demonstrated the effectiveness, efficiency and usefulness of the proposed non-reflecting artificial boundary in dealing with scalar wave propagation problems in two-dimensional homogeneous and layered half spaces.

Abstract:We consider the numerical solution of the time-fractional diffusion-wave equation on a two-dimensional unbounded spatial domain. Introduce an artificial boundary and find the exact and approximate artificial boundary conditions for the given problem, which lead to a bounded computational domain. Using the exact or approximating boundary conditions on the artificial boundary, the original problem is reduced to an initial–boundary-value problem on the bounded computational domain which is respectively equivalent to or approximates the original problem. A finite difference method is used to solve the reduced problems on the bounded computational domain. The numerical results demonstrate that the method given in this paper is effective and feasible.

Abstract:Based on the work of Zheng on the artificial boundary condition for the Schrödinger equation with sinusoidal potentials at infinity, an analytical impedance expression is presented for general second-order ODE problems with periodic coefficients and its validity is shown to be strongly supported by numerical evidences. This new expression for the kernel of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann mapping of the artificial boundary conditions is then used for computing the bound states of the Schrödinger operator with periodic potentials at infinity. Other potential applications are associated with the exact artificial boundary conditions for some time-dependent problems with periodic structures. As an example, a two-dimensional hyperbolic equation modeling the TM polarization of the electromagnetic field with a periodic dielectric permittivity is considered.

The artificial boundary method has reached maturity in recent years. It has been applied to various problems in scientific and engineering computations, and the theoretical issues such as the convergence and error estimates of the artificial boundary method have been solved gradually. Abstract:A method is proposed to obtain the high-performance artificial boundary conditions for solving the time-dependent wave guide problems in an unbounded domain. Using the variable separation method, it is possible to reduce the spatial variables of the wave equation by one. Furthermore, introducing auxiliary functions makes the reduced wave equation a linear first-order ordinary differential system with one control input. Solving the closed-loop control system, a stable and accurate artificial boundary condition is obtained in a rigorous mathematical manner. Numerical examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed artificial boundary conditions for the time-dependent wave guide problems in unbounded domain. Abstract:In this paper, we propose accurate numerical boundary conditions for atomic simulations of twin boundary. The heterogeneity of the lattice structure induces physical reflection across the twin boundary. When numerical boundary and the twin boundary coincide, the goal is to reproduce the correct amount of physical reflection. In particular, we consider waves periodic in the direction parallel to the twin boundary and reduce the problem into a complex-valued chain motion. Using Laplace transform, we design time history kernel (THK) treatment. We further design matching boundary conditions (MBC) by reproducing physical reflection at long wave limit and a specific wave number. Reflection analysis and numerical tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed THK and MBC treatments.

Abstract:An explicit local boundary condition is proposed for finite-domain simulations of the linear Schrodinger equation on an unbounded domain. Based on an exact boundary condition in terms of the Bessel functions, it takes a simple form with 16 neighboring grid points, and it involves no empirical parameter. While the computing load is rather low, the proposed boundary condition is effective in reflection suppression, comparable to the exact convolution treatments. An extension to nonlinear Schrodinger equations is also proposed. Numerical comparisons clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of this ALmost EXact (ALEX) boundary condition for both the linear and the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Abstract:In this paper the numerical simulation of the steady incompressible viscous flow in a no-slip channel is considered. A sequence of approximate nonlocal artificial boundary conditions on a given segment artificial boundary is derived by a system of linearized Navier–Stokes equations and spectral techniques. Then the original problem is reduced to a boundary value problem in a bounded computational domain. The numerical examples show that these artificial boundary conditions are very effective and are also more accurate than Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, which are often used in the engineering literature.

Abstract:This paper presents a time-dependent semi-analytical artificial boundary for numerically simulating elastic wave propagation problems in a two-dimensional homogeneous half space. A polygonal boundary is considered in the half space to truncate the semi-infinite domain, with an appropriate boundary condition imposed. Using the concept of the scaled boundary finite element method, the wave equation of the truncated semi-infinite domain is represented by the partial differential equation of non-constant coefficients. The resulting partial differential equation has only one spatial coordinate variable and time variable. Through introducing a few auxiliary functions at the truncated boundary, the resulting partial differential equations are further transformed into linear time-dependent equations. This allows an artificial boundary to be derived from the time-dependent equations. The proposed artificial boundary is local in time, global at the truncated boundary and semi-analytical in the finite element sense. Compared with the scaled boundary finite element method, the main advantage in using the proposed artificial boundary is that the requirement for solving a matrix form of Lyapunov equation to obtain the unit-impulse response matrix is avoided, so that computer efforts are significantly reduced. The related numerical results from some typical examples have demonstrated that the proposed artificial boundary is of high accuracy in dealing with time-dependent elastic wave propagation in two-dimensional homogeneous semi-infinite domains.

Abstract:To study the numerical solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations on unbounded domains in two or three dimensional cases, we introduce a circular or spherical artificial boundary. Based on the Kirchhoff transformation and the Fourier series expansion, the exact artificial boundary condition and a series of its approximations of the given quasilinear elliptic problem are presented. Then the original problem is equivalently or approximately reduced to a bounded computational domain. The well-posedness of the reduced problems are proved and the convergence results of our numerical solutions on bounded computational domain are given.

Abstract:We consider in this work the numerical approximations of the two-dimensional steady potential flow around a body moving in a liquid of finite constant depth at constant speed and distance below a free surface. Several vertical segments are introduced as the upstream and the downstream artificial boundaries, where a sequence of high-order local artificial boundary conditions are proposed. Then the original problem is solved in a finite computational domain, which is equivalent to a variational problem. The numerical approximations for the original problem are obtained by solving the variational problem with the finite element method. The numerical examples show that the artificial boundary conditions given in this work are very effective.

Abstract:For the Schrödinger–Poisson system, we propose an ALmost EXact (ALEX) boundary condition to treat accurately the numerical boundaries. Being local in both space and time, the ALEX boundary conditions are demonstrated to be effective in suppressing spurious numerical reflections. Together with the Crank–Nicolson scheme, we simulate a resonant tunneling diode. The algorithm produces numerical results in excellent agreement with those in Mennemann et al. [1], yet at a much reduced complexity. Primary peaks in wave function profile appear as a consequence of quantum resonance, and should be considered in selecting the cut-off wave number for numerical simulations.
