Abstract:Comparative studies on the four ATiO(3) compounds are carried out to investigate the different ferroelectric behaviors of ATiO(3) on the basis of the experimental and theoretically optimized lattice structures. The stability predicted from the calculated total energies is in agreement with experimental observation. The obtained potential energy surfaces (PESs) show Ti displacements in CaTiO3 and SrTiO3 result in single-well potential whereas in BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 they produce double-well potential. In contrast to alkaline earth metal atoms, the PES of Pb displacement is double well. The calculated PIES supports the experimental conclusion that Ti displaces from [111] in tetragonal structure. In addition, the calculated hopping barriers are in agreement with the prediction of the vibronic theory. Charge distribution and the Ti-O and A-O bonding situation are analyzed on the basis of electronic structure calculations. It is shown that symmetry lowering enhances Ti-O covalent bonding in all the titled compounds and A-O bonds have some degree of covalency, with Pb-O being the strongest. Analyses show that there is a relationship between the charges on A and A-O interactions and the ferroelectric behaviors of the ATiO(3) perovskite compounds.

Abstract:A comparative study on mechanical, thermodynamic, electronic, and optical properties has been performed on various compounds having an ABO 3 , where A = Ba, Ca, Sr and B = Ce, Ti, Zr, perovskite structure using first-principles calculations. These materials' properties have been thoroughly investigated for their ground states under the same computational parameters. The computed lattice parameters in the ground state agreed with other theoretical studies. Elastic moduli, ductility or brittleness, elastic anisotropy, mechanical stability, and stiffness of solid materials are studied. Enthalpy (H), entropy (S), and free energy (F) were reported from the vibrational properties of the materials. The temperature-dependent heat capacity and Debye temperature are investigated. The electronic band structure as a function of energy, of different perovskite structures at the ground state, is also studied. From this study, the ABO 3 perovskite has emerged as the most promising material for applications in optoelectronics, photonics, and mechanical and thermoelectric devices.

Abstract:The electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of ABO3 (A = La,Sr, B = Fe,Co) perovskites are investigated using first-principles calculations. The obtained results indicate that SrCoO3 and SrFeO3 are metals, while LaCoO3 and LaFeO3 are insulators and all of them exhibit strong hybridization of the Fe/Co-3d and O-2p orbitals. By correlating the energy band structures with the peaks of the imaginary part of the dielectric function, we obtained the origin of each electron excitation to provide information about the active bands for the corresponding optical transitions observed in the experiment. Moreover, the Debye temperatures θD obtained from the phonon frequencies are comparable to the available data. Finally, the thermodynamic properties of the Helmholtz free energy F, entropy S, and constant-volume heat capacity Cv are investigated based on the phonon spectra.

Abstract:The alloy strategy through the A- or X-site is a common method for experimental preparation of high-performance and stable lead-based perovskite solar cells. As one of the important candidates for lead-free and stable photovoltaic absorbers, the inorganic antiperovskite family has recently been reported to exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties. However, the current reports on the design of antiperovskite alloys are rare. In this work, we investigated the previously overlooked electronic property (e.g., conduction band convergence), static dielectric constant, and exciton binding energy in inorganic antiperovskite nitrides by first-principles calculations. Then, we revealed a linear relationship between the tolerance factor and various physical quantities. Guided by the established structure-composition-property relationship in six antiperovskite nitrides X3NA (X2+ = Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+; A3- = P3-, As3-, Sb3-, Bi3-), for the first time, we designed a promising antiperovskite alloy Mg3NAs0.5Bi0.5 with a quasi-direct band gap of 1.402 eV. Finally, we made a comprehensive comparison between antiperovskite nitrides and conventional halide perovskites for pointing out the future direction for device applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ CASTEP based on DFT (density functional theory) calculations to investigate various physical properties of BaVO3, SrVO3, CaVO3 and PbVO3. The elastic constants, bulk modulus, Shear modulus, Young's modulus, Pugh's ratio, Poisson's ratio, Vickers hardness, universal anisotropy index and Peierls stress are calculated to rationalize the mechanical behavior of the aforementioned compounds. The study of electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) reveal the strong evidence of metallic behavior for all the perovskites. The analysis of bonding properties exhibits the existence of covalent, ionic and metallic bonds. The optical properties of AVO3 have been carried out and are discussed in this paper as well. The analysis of phonon property implies the dynamical stability of BaVO3 but not for SrVO3, CaVO3 and PbVO3. The values of Debye temperature and minimum thermal conductivity imply that only PbVO3 compound has potential to be used as TBC material.

Abstract:An empirical method is proposed to judge ordering or disordering in the crystal structure of the (A′A″) (B′B″) O3-type perovskite compound through a simple calculation only using the atomic parameters of the A′ and A″ atom and the ionic parameters of the B′ and B″ cation. The method has been used to judge ordering or disordering in the crystal structure of 56 (A′A″) (B′B″) O3-type perovskite compounds. Most judgements for the ordered or disordered structures of these complex perovskite compounds are in agreement with the experimental results and there are only five exceptional compounds (about 9% of the 56 compounds) to this judgement method. This empirical method will be valid for the various complex perovskite compounds with an ordering or disordering structure.

Abstract:ABO(3) perovskites with small cations at the A site (A = Sc3+, In3+ and Mn2+ and B = Al3+ and transition metals) are reviewed. They extend the corresponding families of perovskites with A(3+) = Y, La-Lu, and Bi and A(2+) = Cd, Ca, Sr and Ba and exhibit the largest structural distortions. As a result of these large distortions, they show, in many cases, distinct structural and magnetic properties. These are manifested in: B-site-ordered monoclinic structures of ScMnO3 and 'InMnO3'; an unusual superstructure of ScRhO3 and InRhO3; antiferromagnetic ground states and multiferroic properties of Sc2NiMnO6 and In2NiMnO6; two magnetic transitions in ScCrO3 and InCrO3 with very close transition temperatures; a Pnma-to-P-1 structural transition and k = (1/2, 0, 1/2) magnetic ordering in ScVO3; and incommensurate magnetic ordering of Mn2+ spins in metallic MnVO3. A large number of simple ScBO3, InBO3 and MnBO3 perovskites has not been synthesized yet, and the number of experimental and theoretical works on each known ScBO3, InBO3 and MnBO3 perovskites counts to only one or two (except for ScAlO3). The synthesis, crystal chemistry and physics of perovskites with small cations at the A site is an emerging field in perovskite science.

Abstract:ABO3 oxides with the perovskite-related structures are attracting significant interest due to their promising physical and chemical properties for many applications requiring tunable chemistry, including fuel cells, catalysis, and electrochemical water splitting. Here we report on the crystal structure of the entire family of perovskite oxides with ABO3 stoichiometry, where A and B are Ba, Sr, Mn, Ce. Given the vast size of this chemically complex material system, exploration for stable perovskite-related structures with respect to its constituent elements and annealing temperature is performed by combinatorial pulsed laser deposition and spatially-resolved characterization of composition and structure. As a result of this high-throughput experimental study, we identify hexagonal perovskite-related polytypic transformation as a function of composition in the Ba1-xSrxMnO3 oxides after annealing at different temperatures. Furthermore, a hexagonal perovskite-related polytype is observed in a narrow composition-temperature range of the BaCexMn1-xO3 oxides. In contrast, a tetragonally-distorted perovskite is observed across a wider range of compositions and annealing temperatures in the Sr1-xCexMnO3 oxides. This structure stability is further enhanced along the BaCexMn1-xO3 - Sr1-xCexMnO3 pseudo-binary tie-line at x=0.25 by increasing Ba-incorporation and annealing temperature. These results indicate that the BaCexMn1-xO3 - Sr1-xCexMnO3 pseudo-binary oxide alloys (solid solutions) with tetragonal perovskite structure and broad composition-temperature range of stability are promising candidates for thermochemical water splitting applications.

Abstract:In this study, ABO3-type (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; B = Ti, Zr) perovskites were prepared by solid-state reaction method and then irradiated by 3 MeV Xe ion. Results show that the samples exhibit significant amorphization and lattice swelling under irradiation. The radiation resistance of ABO3 perovskites is strongly correlated to the structural factors which were proposed to describe the structural stability of perovskites. Specifically, radiation resistance of ABO3 perovskites deteriorates with increasing t and (mu + t)n and decreasing z, where t is Goldschmidt's tolerance factor, mu is the octahedral factor, n is the atomic packing fraction, and z is a new tolerance factor. Furthermore, the decomposition energies of ABO3 perovskites were calculated to confirm the mentioned cor-relation. According to this study, it is suggested that structural factors may provide guidance for predicting the radiation resistance of perovskites and seeking for potential perovskites.

Abstract:Synthesis, crystal chemistry, and physics of perovskites with small cations at the A site are an emerging field in perovskite science. Properties of ABO3 perovskites with small cations at the A site (A = Sc and In; B = transition metals) will be reported. ScBO3 and InBO3 perovskites extend the corresponding families of perovskites with A = Y, La-Lu, and Bi and exhibit larger structural distortions. Abstract:The phonon spectra of calcium, strontium, barium, radium, cadmium, zinc, magnesium, germanium, tin, and lead titanates with the perovskite structure are calculated from first principles within the density functional theory. By analyzing the unstable modes in the phonon spectra, the possible lattice distortions are determined and the energies of the corresponding phases are calculated. From analyzing the phonon spectra, force constants, and eigenvectors of TO phonons, a conclusion is drawn on the origin of the ferroelectricity in considered crystals. It is shown that the main factors determining the possible off-centering of atoms in the A position are the geometric size and electronic configuration of these atoms.

Here, 2H, 6H, and 10H refer to the number of [BaO3] layers contained in the unit cell of the BaCo0.9Ru0.1O3-δ system. Experimentally, 10H-BaCo0.9Ru0.1O3-δ, featuring ten layers of [BaO3], exhibits optimal electrochemical activity among the three oxide catalysts, and in situ Raman results under various bias voltages confirm its ability to maintain a high surface crystal structural stability. Notably, as the number of [BaO3] layers increases, the effective magnetic moments and the valence state of surface Co ions in these three catalysts also increase, with the spin configuration of the surface Co ions being in a high-spin state. More importantly, DFT calculations provide the evolution rules of the p-band center (εp) with the number of [BaO3] layers, predicting the electrochemical performance of the BaCo0.9Ru0.1O3-δ system with different [BaO3] layers. Our experimental results offer a distinctive perspective for the future design, synthesis, and application of hexagonal perovskite oxides in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:ABO3 perovskites are oxide materials that are used for a variety of applications such as solid oxide fuel cells, piezo-, ferro-electricity and water splitting. Due to their remarkable stability with respect to cation substitution, new compounds for such applications potentially await discovery. In this work, we present an exhaustive dataset of formation energies of 5,329 cubic and distorted perovskites that were calculated using first-principles density functional theory. In addition to formation energies, several additional properties such as oxidation states, band gap, oxygen vacancy formation energy, and thermodynamic stability with respect to all phases in the Open Quantum Materials Database are also made publicly available. This large dataset for this ubiquitous crystal structure type contains 395 perovskites that are predicted to be thermodynamically stable, of which many have not yet been experimentally reported, and therefore represent theoretical predictions. The dataset thus opens avenues for future use, including materials discovery in many research-active areas.

Quasi-linear Dependence of Cation Filling on the Photocatalysis of A(x)BO3-based Tunnel Compounds.

Abstract:A series of A(x)BO(3)-based oxides, (A1)(4)(A2)(2)(A3)(4)Nb(10)O(30) (A1 = Sr, Ba; A2 = Na, K; A3 = □) as deficient perovskites, ATiO(3) (A = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) as ideal perovskites are prepared by solid-state reaction method, and investigated as novel tunnel photocatalysts. The efficiency exhibits a high dependence on the cation filling in the respective tunnels of these compounds. Generally, lower cation filling contributes to a higher activity. The cation filling is rationalized by the crystal packing factor (PF), the photocatalytic efficiency decreases quasi-linearly with PF. Moreover, the linear correlation also exists in the literature involving tunnel photocatalysts of Bi(2)RNbO(7) (R = Y, rare earth element), MIn(2)O(4) (M = Ca, Sr, Ba), ATaO(3) (A = Li, Na, K), etc. Such linear correlation of photocatalysis with the crystal structure has not been reported in the literature. The study of structure-modification by controlling cation-filling for improving activity sheds light on the mechanism of photocatalysis and on developing new high-performance photocatalysts.
Investigation of thermal control in phase-changing ABO3 perovskites via first-principles predictions: general mechanism of solar absorptivity

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of solar absorbance during the phase-change process is investigated in ABO3 perovskites based on first-principles predictions. A Gaussian-like relationship between the solar absorbance and band gaps is established, which follows the Shockley-Queisser limiting efficiency. For ABO3 perovskites with bandgaps of Eg > 3.5 eV, a low solar absorbance is obtained, whereas a high solar absorbance is obtained for ABO3 perovskites, with band gaps ranging from 0.25 to 2.2 eV. The relationship between the orbital character of the density of states (DOS) and the absorption spectra reveals that ABO3 perovskites with magnetic (strongly interacting) and distorted crystal structures always exhibit a higher solar absorptivity. In contrast, non-magnetic and cubic ABO3 perovskites always exhibit a lower solar absorptivity. Moreover, the tunable solar absorptivity always undergoes a phase change from cubic to large distorted crystal structures in ABO3 perovskites with strong interactions. These results can be attributed to a rich structural, electronic, and magnetic phase diagram resulting from the strong interplay between the lattice, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom, which induce highly tunable optical characteristics in the phase-change process. The findings presented in this study are critical for the development of ABO3 perovskite-based smart thermal control materials in the spacecraft field.

Abstract:Inorganic halide perovskite-based compounds of A 3 BX 3 have been gaining huge attention during the development of high-efficiency solar cells (SC) in recent years. This paper, investigating the physical and chemical properties could unveil its further potential to be used as absorber materials in advanced multijunction photovoltaics. The structural, optical, and electronic characterization of different compositional compounds of A 3 BX 3 (A=Ca/Sr, BP/As, X=I/Br) perovskites are examined thoroughly to be used as absorber in high performance photovoltaics. The DFT study reveals direct bandgaps of 1.93 (2.60) eV, 1.58 (2.14) eV, 1.96 (2.63) eV, 1.58 (2.16) eV, 1.52 (2.30) eV, 1.26 (1.94) eV, 1.53 (2.32) eV, and 1.26 (1.96) eV at Γ for the Ca 3 AsBr 3 , Ca 3 AsI 3 , Ca 3 PBr 3 , Ca 3 PI 3 , Sr 3 AsBr 3 , Sr 3 AsI 3 , Sr 3 PBr 3 , and Sr 3 PI 3 perovskites using PBE (HSE) methods with optical absorption of (2−5)x10 4 (a. u.) in the optical region (< 3.2 eV). Subsequently, the potential of the A 3 BX 3 absorber has been investigated and analyzed at varying layer thickness, defect densities, and doping concentrations with SnS 2 electron transport layer (ETL) layer using FTO/SnS 2 /A 3 BX 3 /Ni heterostructure with current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics and corresponding quantum efficiency (QE) observation. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.52, 20.88, 13.66, 22.47, 20.83, 28.16, 20.77, and 27.32% were achieved in Ca 3 AsBr 3 , Ca 3 AsI 3 , Ca 3 PBr 3 , Ca 3 PI 3 , Sr 3 AsBr 3 , Sr 3 AsI 3 , Sr 3 PBr 3 , and Sr 3 PI 3 absorber-based heterojunction SC. Notably, the highest PV performance revealed a PCE over 28% with a V OC of 0.913 V, J SC of 35.75 mA/cm −3, and FF of 86.26% obtained in the Sr 3 AsI 3 absorber SCs. Thus, these detailed studies on the physical and optoelectronic properties of eight (8) different possible absorber-based configurations including their PV applications unveil the huge potential of A 3 BX 3 (i.e., Sr 3 AsI 3 ) and provide resources for the practical cell development of inorganic perovskites-based high efficiency SC over 28%.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of solar absorbance during the phase-change process is investigated in ABO perovskites based on first-principles predictions. A Gaussian-like relationship between the solar absorbance and band gaps is established, which follows the Shockley-Queisser limiting efficiency. For ABO perovskites with bandgaps of > 3.5 eV, a low solar absorbance is obtained, whereas a high solar absorbance is obtained for ABO perovskites, with band gaps ranging from 0.25 to 2.2 eV. The relationship between the orbital character of the density of states (DOS) and the absorption spectra reveals that ABO perovskites with magnetic (strongly interacting) and distorted crystal structures always exhibit a higher solar absorptivity. In contrast, non-magnetic and cubic ABO perovskites always exhibit a lower solar absorptivity. Moreover, the tunable solar absorptivity always undergoes a phase change from cubic to large distorted crystal structures in ABO perovskites with strong interactions. These results can be attributed to a rich structural, electronic, and magnetic phase diagram resulting from the strong interplay between the lattice, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom, which induce highly tunable optical characteristics in the phase-change process. The findings presented in this study are critical for the development of ABO perovskite-based smart thermal control materials in the spacecraft field.

Abstract:Three new tellurates, namely, K2BaPb0.62Ba0.38Te2O9 (1), Rb2BaPb0.7Ba0.3Te2O9 (2), and Ba2KLiTe2O9 (3), with hexagonal triple-perovskite structures have been designed via a cation substitution strategy. All three centrosymmetric compounds crystallize in the same hexagonal space group P63/mmc. In their structures, the [BTe2O9] (B = Pb/Ba for 1 and 2 and Li for 3) groups construct the final three-dimensional framework using face-sharing [Te2O9] dimmers and vertex-linked [BO6] linkages. Meanwhile, the theoretical calculations demonstrate the numerical differences of their birefringence.
