Abstract:Stochastic dynamics studies various stochastic dynamical processes and phenomena in nature,engineering and society using probability and statistics.After the developments in the last century,nonlinear stochastic dynamics has plenty of theories and methods,among which the theory and method of diffusion processes are dominant.The present paper outlines this theory and method,especially the Hamiltonian theoretical framework of nonlinear stochastic dynamics and control proposed and developed by the present author.Finally,the collaboration of researchers in various fields of stochastic dynamics and control is suggested.
Chaos, patterns, coherent structures, and turbulence: Reflections on nonlinear science

Abstract:The paradigms of nonlinear science were succinctly articulated over 25 years ago as deterministic chaos, pattern formation, coherent structures, and adaptation/evolution/learning. For chaos, the main unifying concept was universal routes to chaos in general nonlinear dynamical systems, built upon a framework of bifurcation theory. Pattern formation focused on spatially extended nonlinear systems, taking advantage of symmetry properties to develop highly quantitative amplitude equations of the Ginzburg-Landau type to describe early nonlinear phenomena in the vicinity of critical points. Solitons, mathematically precise localized nonlinear wave states, were generalized to a larger and less precise class of coherent structures such as, for example, concentrated regions of vorticity from laboratory wake flows to the Jovian Great Red Spot. The combination of these three ideas was hoped to provide the tools and concepts for the understanding and characterization of the strongly nonlinear problem of fluid turbulence. Although this early promise has been largely unfulfilled, steady progress has been made using the approaches of nonlinear science. I provide a series of examples of bifurcations and chaos, of one-dimensional and two-dimensional pattern formation, and of turbulence to illustrate both the progress and limitations of the nonlinear science approach. As experimental and computational methods continue to improve, the promise of nonlinear science to elucidate fluid turbulence continues to advance in a steady manner, indicative of the grand challenge nature of strongly nonlinear multi-scale dynamical systems.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:This Focus Issue covers recent developments in the broad areas of nonlinear dynamics, synchronization, and emergent behavior in dynamical networks. It targets current progress on issues such as time series analysis and data-driven modeling from real data such as climate, brain, and social dynamics. Predicting and detecting early warning signals of extreme climate conditions, epileptic seizures, or other catastrophic conditions are the primary tasks from real or experimental data. Exploring machine-based learning from real data for the purpose of modeling and prediction is an emerging area. Application of the evolutionary game theory in biological systems (eco-evolutionary game theory) is a developing direction for future research for the purpose of understanding the interactions between species. Recent progress of research on bifurcations, time series analysis, control, and time-delay systems is also discussed.

Abstract:Few geoscientists would deny that effects are often sensitively dependent on causes, or that their amplification is commonly so strong as to give rise to qualitatively new “emergent” properties, or that geostructures are typically embedded one within another in a hierarchy. Starting in the 1980s, a growing number felt the need to underline the absolute importance of such nonlinearity through workshops and conferences. Building on this, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) organized a nonlinear processes (NP) section in 1990; AGU established a nonlinear geophysics (NG) focus group in 1997; and both unions began collaborating on an academic journal, Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics, in 1994.

Abstract:Modern financial markets encapsulate vast number of interconnected financial entities, instruments, and strategies. Understanding these complex dynamical systems requires multidisciplinary efforts from a wide range of quantitative fields including mathematics, statistics, data mining, and operations research. While conventional financial research focuses mostly on linear models of variables of interest, they cannot copewith real-world financial phenomena. In the past decade, we have seen significant progress in our fundamental understanding of dynamical financial and economic behaviors, both from the microand macroprospectives, using nonlinear systems and methodologies. Powerful techniques borrowed from traditional nonlinear models and new methods invented have been brought to almost every aspect of financial research, including asset pricing, risk management, and financial forecasting. Still, there exist many challenging problems. In spite of the amount of published results recently focused on dynamical financial and economic behaviors, there remain many challenging open questions. The aim of this special issue is to gather recent research efforts on the development and applications of nonlinear techniques to address the critical issues in finance and to see the latest developments. The original papers explored in this special issue include a wide variety of topics such as the following.

Abstract:Abstract Starting from a recent classification of the development stages of nonlinear dynamics in mechanics, this review builds on the idea that the level of scientific maturity of the area is now such as to involve a gradual shift of its core interests from the inherent theoretical and practical findings to the application benefits that they can bring to solving dynamic problems in a variety of technological environments. First, an overview of the current state of knowledge and the achievements of the community of relevant scholars in about the last ten years is presented, distinguishing between traditional and emerging themes fully inherent to mechanics, and more hybridized scientific contexts. Then, a “vision” of expected future developments is attempted, by organizing the presentation along some main lines. (i) Identifying modeling, methodological, and computational advancements needed to address challenging, new or updated, research issues, with a view to deepening and further expanding the ranges of theoretical development and practical interest of nonlinear dynamics. (ii) Overviewing directions toward which promoting full exploitation of intrinsic or intentionally added nonlinearities, to the aim of improving and possibly optimizing specific behaviors and general operating conditions of actual systems/structures in a variety of dynamic environments, by also referring to the uncertainty quantification issue. (iii) Pursuing “novel” lines of developments of nonlinear dynamics in a fully hybridized and cross-disciplinary framework, with also possible expectation of new related phenomenologies.

Abstract:Paradigms of nonlinear science may suggest that it is "the study of every single phenomenon" due to its interdisciplinary nature, which is a challenge requiring to be addressed by generating a systematic mathematical framework where the complexity of natural phenomena hints the requirement of identifying their commonalties and classifying their various manifestations in different nonlinear systems. Studying such common properties, concepts or paradigms can enable one to gain insight into nonlinear problems, their essence and consequences in a broad range of disciplines all forthwith. Fractional calculus manifests unforeseeable and hidden variations and enables integration and differentiation, with the solutions to be approximated by numerical methods along with modeling and predicting the dynamics of multiphysics, multiscale and physical systems. Neural Networks, consisting of hidden layers with nonlinear functions, are also considerably employed owing to their versatile and efficient characteristics in classification problems as well as their sophisticated neural network architectures, which make them capable of tackling complicated governing partial differential equation problems. Furthermore, partial differential equations are used to provide comprehensive and accurate models for many scientific phenomena owing to the advancements of data gathering and machine learning techniques which have raised opportunities for data-driven identification of governing equations derived from experimentally observed data. While many problems are solvable, efforts are needed to respond to the remaining open questions in fields ranging from mathematics, physics, biology, epidemiology, chemistry, engineering, social sciences to applied sciences. Our special issue provides a collection of recent research focusing on the advances in theory, methodology and applications of fractals, fractional calculus, fractional differential equations, differential equations, delay differential equations, chaos, bifurcation, stability, sensitivity, machine learning, quantum machine learning, and so forth to expound advanced fractional calculus, differential equations and neural networks with detailed analyses, models, simulations, data-driven approaches and numerical computations.

Abstract:In the recent years, several complex systems have been investigated in nonlinear theory and have had a huge impact on the scientist researches.Due to the complexity of their design, analysis, and control, innovative insights had emerged in this expanding area.The purpose of this special issue is to draw attention of the scientific community to recent advances in nonlinear systems theory and their possible applications.The special issue includes several high-quality papers written by leading and emerging specialists in the field.It proposes an array of novel complex models belonging to the class of chaotic/hyperchaotic systems, fractional-order nonlinear systems, game systems, and smart grid and multiagent systems.Stability analyses and bifurcation investigations are also exposed for several models.Advanced control techniques and novel synchronization approaches are moreover suggested.We can quote, in that sense, applications not only related to the technology such as electronics and circuit design, multimedia, networks, and robotics but also related to biomedical and market domains.

Abstract:The knowledge on properties and dynamics of earthquakes and faults remains highly incomplete despite considerable research spanning over 100 years.The main difficulties stem from the limited resolution of the available observations, strongly nonlinear behavior and other complexities in the governing physics, along with existence of multiscale multi-phase (solid, granular, fluid) crustal heterogeneities.Recent theoretical and technique developments, novel laboratory experiments, dense seismic arrays, and other high quality data sets provide new opportunities for advancing the understanding of earthquakes and fault zones.These and related topics were discussed in a workshop titled ''Frontiers in Studies of Earthquakes and Faults'', conducted during Nov 27-Dec 1, 2017 at the Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.The papers in this topical issue are based on presentations given at the workshop and additional contributions, and they describe the stateof-the-art in several key frontiers.Topics covered in this volume include analysis of earthquake source properties, models of dynamic ruptures and slow slip events, imaging fault zones and the crust, detection of small earthquakes, high-resolution results from laboratory fracturing experiments, quantifying temporal changes of seismic properties, inversions of focal mechanisms to stress and more.

Abstract:Theoretical analysis of nonlinear dynamics and its applications in engineering pioneers the major research issues in nonlinear science. It has significant values in both theory and applications to do innovative research and to reveal the essential features and mechanism of dynamic processes of complex systems utilizing the theory of nonlinear dynamics. The results and achievements in nonlinear dynamics will be widely used in science and engineering. This paper is an attempt to categorize recent research achievements in fundamental theory of nonlinear dynamics and its applications in mechanical systems. In aspect of theoretical research, the major issues concerned are the Chen-Longford method that reveals the important relation between the periodic bifurcation solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems and the structural parameters of the system, universal classification of high co-dimension bifurcations, universal unfolding of high co-dimension unsymmetrical bifurcations, classification of constraint bifurcations, the direct method for calculating the normal form of nonlinear autonomous systems, the complex inner product averaging method for calculating the normal form of nonlinear non-autonomous systems, and the order reduction methods for high dimensional systems. In aspect of applications, the major topics concerned are the instability mechanism, bifurcation solutions, chaotic motions, fault diagnosis and its synthetic control techniques of the nonlinear rotor dynamical systems for large-scale rotating machinery; the stability, Hopf bifurcation, subharmonic bifurcations, co-dimension 2 bifurcation, and chaotic motions of impact-vibrating systems; and the dynamic design strategy and nonlinear vibrations of large-scale resonant screens.

Abstract:In nonlinear optical systems, the optical superposition principle breaks down. The system’s response (including electric polarization, current density, etc) is not proportional to the stimulus it receives. Over the past half century, nonlinear optics has grown from an individual frequency doubling experiment into a broad academic field. The nonlinear optics has not only brought new physics and phenomena, but also has become an enabling technology for numerous areas that are vital to our lives, such as communications, health, advanced manufacturing, et al . This Roadmap surveys some of the recent emerging fields of the nonlinear optics, with a special attention to studies in China. Each section provides an overview of the current and future challenges within a part of the field, highlighting the most exciting opportunities for future research and developments.

Abstract:In this special issue, the first paper by Li 24 gives a tutorial of fractal time series from the point of view of systems of fractional order.The second by Liu 25 provides a review of chaotic time series.The third by Cattani 26 reveals the fractal shapes and the symmetries of DNA from a view of fractal time series.The fourth one by Mattioli et al. 27 studies largeamplitude pulses with the FitzHugh-Nagumo model to exhibit the sensitivity to local jumps and some unexpected inertia of neurons as response to the high-amplitude spike.The fifth paper by Bakhoum and Toma 28 investigates the dynamics of macroscopic and quantum transitions.The paper by Toma 29 presents a method to synthesize pulse series based on nonlinear differential equations.Abuzeid et al. 30 contributes a paper for constructing a continuous hereditary creep model for the thermoviscoelastic contact of a rough punch and a smooth surface of a rigid half-space.The paper by Zhao et al. 31 discusses the detrended fluctuation analysis method to detect the long-range correlation and scaling properties of daily precipitation series of Beijing from 1973 to 2004 before and after adding diverse trends to the original series.

Abstract:The problem of reconstructing nonlinear and complex dynamical systems from measured data or time series is central to many scientific disciplines including physical, biological, computer, and social sciences, as well as engineering and economics. In this paper, we review the recent advances in this forefront and rapidly evolving field, aiming to cover topics such as compressive sensing (a novel optimization paradigm for sparse-signal reconstruction), noised-induced dynamical mapping, perturbations, reverse engineering, synchronization, inner composition alignment, global silencing, Granger Causality and alternative optimization algorithms. Often, these rely on various concepts from statistical and nonlinear physics such as phase transitions, bifurcation, stabilities, and robustness. The methodologies have the potential to significantly improve our ability to understand a variety of complex dynamical systems ranging from gene regulatory systems to social networks towards the ultimate goal of controlling such systems. Despite recent progress, many challenges remain. A purpose of this Review is then to point out the specific difficulties as they arise from different contexts, so as to stimulate further efforts in this interdisciplinary field.

Abstract:Nonlinear dynamics on graphs has rapidly become a topical issue with many physical applications, ranging from nonlinear optics to Bose-Einstein condensation. Whenever in a physical experiment a ramified structure is involved, it can prove useful to approximate such a structure by a metric graph, or network. For the Schroedinger equation it turns out that the sixth power in the nonlinear term of the energy is critical in the sense that below that power the constrained energy is lower bounded irrespectively of the value of the mass (subcritical case). On the other hand, if the nonlinearity power equals six, then the lower boundedness depends on the value of the mass: below a critical mass, the constrained energy is lower bounded, beyond it, it is not. For powers larger than six the constrained energy functional is never lower bounded, so that it is meaningless to speak about ground states (supercritical case). These results are the same as in the case of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the real line. In fact, as regards the existence of ground states, the results for systems on graphs differ, in general, from the ones for systems on the line even in the subcritical case: in the latter case, whenever the constrained energy is lower bounded there always exist ground states (the solitons, whose shape is explicitly known), whereas for graphs the existence of a ground state is not guaranteed. For the critical case, our results show a phenomenology much richer than the analogous on the line.
